Spring is in the air and this brings with it a happy

hopeful feeling. For a lot of us, it is accompa-

nied by an overwhelming urge to clean. Time to

go through the clutter, time to reorganize and

renew.

A systematic approach to the task will make it

easier, less stressful and dare we say it...fun!

Here’s some great tips and a handy checklist to

make this year’s spring cleaning a breeze.

Clean Sweep...

Spring Cleaning 101…

For most of us, cleaning is not something we necessarily enjoy. It’s just something that needs to be done. There is some amount of enjoyment though from the finished product. A sparkling clean and fresh smelling home brings with it a sense of accomplishment as well as a sense of pride.

The thought of Spring Cleaning can be daunting. What you need to start with is a plan. How many days should you devote to it? Which room will you start in? Cleaning can be extremely time consuming so you need to have an organized plan of attack. If you have children, get them involved. Put some music on and let them help. Any extra hands are an advantage and it will teach them that cleaning doesn’t have to be a chore.

Once you start, you’ll find it’s hard to stop. Cleaning out the cupboards gives us the perfect excuse to go through what’s inside and

get rid of the clutter. Time to give away and throw away. If the serving dish you keep to use once a year hasn’t been used in ten, get rid of it. If the clothes in your cupboards or dresser don’t fit, let them go. The ugly vase you keep to please the aunt who gave it to you, it’s time to send it packing.

Cleaning behind and under the furniture gives us a reason to rearrange it. You may be surprised at how just moving things around and changing up the accessories can make you fall in love with your home all over again. Bringing in furniture, pillows and accessories from other rooms can create a fresh new appearance, don’t be afraid to experiment. Move pictures around and rearrange items on the bookshelves, dusting as you go.

Remember to designate an area in your home to store items that you want to get rid of. Keep separate piles for throwing away and giving away. While you’re going through every room, make a list of any repairs that need to be done.

You will need to have all the necessary cleaning

supplies: a bucket, a mop, all purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, rubber gloves, paper towels, a broom, your vacuum, clean soft rags, a good scrub brush, sponges and scouring pads, a toothbrush and a good quality feather duster.

Make sure to wash down all the walls, doors, baseboards and trim. Remove window screens and give all your windows a good wash. Clean the blinds and wash all curtains. This is also a good time to change the light bulbs in your fixtures and to clean the inside of your light covers. Also take the time to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Finally, try not to look at spring cleaning as work.

Think of it as the beginning of the renewal and revitalization of the season. Have fun!



Scrub tub and tub surround

Clean shower doors or wash shower curtain

Scrub grout with toothbrush

Clean toilet, scrub inside the bowl. Clean seat, rim, base, lid and tank

Wash walls, mouldings, cabinet doors, light fixtures and light switches

Clean shelves/cabinets. Discard old, unused and expired items

Soak shower head and drains in a little hot water and TSP

Scrub sink with sponge. Use toothbrush to clean around faucet and sink edges. Buff with a dry cloth

Clean mirrors with glass cleaner

Sweep/vacuum floors then give floors a good cleaning, don’t forget corners and behind the toilet

Wash out garbage can and replace the bag

Wash decorative towels and clean all accessories

Clean soap dishes and toothbrush holders, replace decorative soaps

Wash all bedding

Vacuum mattress, rotate and flip

Dust all surfaces, pictures and accessories

Wash walls, mouldings, doors, light fixtures and light switches

Clean window treatments, wash windows

Clean mirrors with glass cleaner

Store heavy winter clothes, take spring/summer clothes out of storage, label all bins

Sweep or vacuum all floors and under all furniture

Clean microwave. Add a rag to a bowl of water and lemon juice. Boil it in

the microwave for 1-2 minutes to steam off stains. Wipe clean.

Clean stove with oven cleaner, scrub inside and out. Soak element trays

and racks. Replace element liners

Clean the fridge. Discard old or expired foods. Wipe down shelves and

crispers.

Clean out all drawers and cupboards. Discard unused and unwanted

items. Vacuum interiors and wipe with hot soapy water. Use a liner to protect surfaces.

Wash walls, mouldings, cupboard doors, light fixtures and light fixtures

Scrub sink with a scouring pad to remove stains. Use a toothbrush to

clean around faucets and sink edges. Flush drains with boiling water.

Sweep/vacuum floors then scrub floors, clean corners, scrub grout and

reseal as necessary

Dust all surfaces including artwork, electronics and light fixtures

Wash walls, mouldings, doors and light switches

Vacuum furniture, remove cushions from sofas and chairs

Clean window treatments

Remove window screens to clean. Wash windows and trim.

Sweep or vacuum and mop all floors. Steam clean carpets if required

Polish all wood furniture

Clean all glass and mirrors.

Everywhere you look, spring is in the air.

The robins are a boppin’, the geese a flockin’ and the squirrels are frantically running about trying to remember where they buried their nuts. Ah the signs of spring! Now that spring is upon us, it can´t get here fast enough. We all know that the general rule of thumb for the start of the planting season is usually around the middle of May. Although it still seems a far ways away, this is a perfect time to start planning

the look of your garden. Depending on available space and exposure you can either choose to go with all annuals, perennials or a combination of both. Black Forest Garden Centre believes that a good combination is 80% perennials and 20% annuals - the annuals not only allow originality and diversity from year to year, but more importantly maintain your colour scheme during the transition of your perennials (perennials come into bloom at different times throughout the season).

For close to 25 years Black Forest Garden Centre has become the number one stop for unique and original hanging baskets, planters and seasonal urns and a true one-stop garden centre which caters to all of your gardening needs from the sublime (home and garden accents, giftware and accessories) to the practical (soil, seeds, fertilizers and more notably their quality annuals and perennials).

To many a perennial garden may seem a pretty daunting undertaking involving a lot of work and care. Some may even see it as a true labour of love. However, once in place, a well planned perennial garden is really quite rewarding and really does not involve too much labour. As with every garden, it is best to start small - perhaps a small section along the fence line or a smaller corner in either the front or backyard. Once the location has been decided on, start thinking of a colour scheme. Perennials come in a number of different shades and colours - some sun loving, others enjoy the shade and many tolerate both. Strategically placed bulbs can also become an important component in your

perennial garden.

Choose from staples like tulips and narcissus or try something different - allium, daffodils, fritillaries, hyacinth and snowdrops are generally rodent resistant. With a myriad of colours to satisfy everyone’s taste, bulbs can provide dazzling accents from spring until fall.

I would like to dedicate this article to my husband and best

friend, Larry Schoffer, who left us too soon..

Larry loved his garden and I have many happy memories of

the hours spent with him in our backyard. I would like to

take this opportunity to thank everyone for their love and

support during this very difficult time.

A rustic bench. Planters that overflow with the best of summer colour. A flagstone path. A trellis or arbour. These simple additions can turn a previously unused section of your backyard into a special place where you can contemplate life, read a magazine or sip a glass of wine at the end of a busy day. It doesn’t have to be complicated and it doesn’t need to cost a fortune. All it takes is a good plan and a little elbow grease. Find an area in the garden that is quiet and peaceful. Then think about what makes you happy. Is it the smell of fresh herbs or is it the colour of summer blooms? How about the soothing sounds of water? Whatever you choose, make sure to keep it personal. The space is an extension of you and each element should be carefully selected. If you have the room, a pergola covered in vines offers privacy for some quiet alone time or for a romantic dinner for two. Alternatively, a gazebo offers shelter from the weather and can be filled with comfy seating, some ambient lighting and a few of your favourite books. A small flagstone path or patio is an inspired choice. Add a rustic bench and planters in different shapes and sizes. Plant a variety of annuals in your favourite colours. They can be placed in a formal arrangement or scattered randomly throughout the space. Consider an arbour with a built in bench seat. It can become the focal point in a small space. Surround the area with plantings of fragrant perennials or perhaps a butterfly garden. Train some clematis or your favourite flowering vine to grow up and around the arbour. If you are looking to add a water feature, why not use an old half barrel with a antique spigot. Attach it to a small pump and you’ll be surrounded with the sound of a trickling stream. If you prefer, fill up the bucket with water and include floating candles to create a tranquil night time spot. Any theme that you enjoy can easily be used for your inspiration. Create a zen garden with a bamboo bench. Add Asian inspired garden art and build a small sandbox complete with rake. Surround with ornamental grasses for privacy. Design a tropical island getaway with a comfy lounge chair enhanced with a bright chair pad. Add a thatched umbrella and some torches for that Caribbean feel. If you love the look of an English country garden, you can add some wrought iron accent pieces or an old screen door. Or fill an old wooden wheelbarrow or wishing well with cascading blooms. Use your yard to the fullest by sectioning areas of the garden into separate “rooms”. Use your imagination and surround yourself with things that you love. And most importantly, take some time every day to appreciate what you have created. Have a wonderful summer!

We would like say thank you to all of the participants of this year’s Runway to Spring. Thank you to the clothiers, the food and beverage providers and to all the individuals and businesses who

donated their services as well as raffle and auction prizes. To our Easter Seals ambassadors, entertainment providers, master of ceremonies and our volunteers, thank you again. Most importantly,

In the last two years, the Runway to Spring charity fashion event has raised over $25,000 for the Easter Seals “Send a Kid to Camp” program. With your help we have been able to send disabled children from York Region to

Easter Seals speciality camps and give them a summer to remember forever!

In early 2009, realtor Michele Denniston attended a Century 21 convention and was touched by a presentation on the Easter Seals “Send a Kid to Camp” program. So touched in fact, that she decided to create this event to raise money to benefit the program. As a York Region resident, Michele believes in giving back to the community in which she lives and works. She is extremely proud to host the annual event and looks forward to it’s growth and continued success.

A participant in Runway to Spring last year, Injoy Yoga joins the event as co-sponsor for 2011. Mother and daughter team Gayle and Andrea have turned their shared passion for clothes and their love of yoga into one of Aurora’s most successful and respected boutiques. They also have a passion for the community and were thrilled to be part of an event that supports such a worthwhile cause. They are a welcome addition to this year’s event.

GTA REALTORS® Report Monthly Resale Housing Figures

TORONTO, March 16, 2011 -- Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 4,138 sales during the first two weeks of March 2011 – a five per cent decrease compared to the first two weeks of March 2010. The number of new listings also dipped – down by 15 per cent compared to the same period last year. "A positive economic outlook for the Greater Toronto Area, including steady growth in jobs and incomes, has kept households confident in their ability to purchase and pay for a home over the long term," said Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) President Bill Johnston. The average price for transactions during the first 14 days of March was $460,196, representing a 4.6 per cent increase compared to the first two weeks of March 2010. "Market conditions are tighter compared to this time last year, resulting in more competition between buyers and sustained upward pressure on the average selling price. The annual rate of price growth is expected to range between three and five per cent in 2011," said Jason Mercer, TREB's Senior Manager of Market Analysis.

This is a quick and easy bake. The flavors from the sausage give a wonderful flavor to the potatoes during the baking process.

8 Octoberfest sausages (or your favorite sausage) 3 -4 potatoes peeled and cut into wedges 1/2 cup olive oil 1 tsp garlic powder (or 2 fresh chopped garlic cloves) 2 tbsp fresh chopped rosemary Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Mix all ingredients except sausage and potatoes in a bowl and combine. Place sausage and potatoes in large roasting pan in a single layer and pour the marinade over top - mix well to ensure every sausage and potato is coat-ed. Place in centre of oven, and bake uncovered for 45 minutes. Turn sausages and potatoes over and cook another ½ hour or until sausage and potatoes are cooked and cripsy. Serves 6 – 8

This is a very elegant and fragrant dish that is great accompanying any grilled or roasted meat dish.

2 fennel bulbs boiled in salted water until core is fork tender, green tops removed 2 tbsp oil 2 tbsp butter Salt and pepper to taste 1 cup parmesan cheese Parsley sprigs to garnish

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Slice the fennel in ¼” thick slices. Heat the oil and 1 tbsp of the butter in a non stick skillet and brown fennel slices on medium heat until golden brown and caramelized on both sides. Grease a 9” x 12” casserole dish with the remaining butter. Arrange the slices of fennel so they are slightly

overlapping. Top with salt pepper and parmesan cheese and bake uncovered for 30 minutes or until top is sizzling and golden brown. Garnish with Parsley and serve. Serves 6 -8

Every generation has its own version of cooking the same foods in many different delicious ways. I learned most of my recipes from my mom, who learned from her mom. The ingredients were measured in the palm of their hands using words like… ”a pinch of that”….or, my favourite...”you can just tell when it’s enough”. It all goes to show that a recipe is a guideline and not a law. Regardless of what the recipe is on paper, feel free to put our own ideas and create different delicious inspirations!

I like to follow a recipe the first time I prepare it. I decide what I like and what I don’t like and I personal-ize it the second time around. It can either become a spin off of the original or an entirely new recipe to call my own. Don’t be afraid to experiment – let it go and have fun!

This is a savory appetizer that can be baked or served as is. Baking these bundles too long may cause them to become salty. Drizzle a little balsamic reduction on the top just before serving for an extra kick.

10 slices of prosciutto 30 asparagus spears ¼ cup of goats cheese (or to taste) Fresh ground pepper Balsamic reduction (optional)

Steam the asparagus spears until al dente. Lay out the 10 slices of prosciutto and add a small teaspoon of the goat’s cheese in the centre of each piece. Add 3 asparagus spears on top of prosciutto and roll. Place on a baking sheet and top with freshly ground pepper. Bake at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes until

slightly warmed. Be sure not to crisp the prosciutto. Makes 10 rolls.

Oatmeal Cookies Traditional, classic and always a favorite. Enjoy with a big glass of milk!

½ cup butter, softened ½ cup brown sugar ½ cup sugar 1 tsp vanilla 1 egg 1 ½ cup quick-cooking rolled oats 1 cup flour ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional) ¼ teaspoon salt

½ cup chopped walnuts (optional) ½ dark raisins Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease cookie sheets. In a large bowl cream butter with both sugars. Add vanilla and egg blend well. Stir in oats, flour, baking powder, cinnamon and mix well. Stir in nuts and raisins. Drop cookies onto pan and bake for 15-20 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Cool on a cookie rack. Makes 2 dozen cookies.
