• The IK4 Research Alliance is part of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network, and so are its 9 centres.
• This Network is promoted by the Basque Government in order to facilitate access of the industrial sector mainly to R&D&I activities, and increase its competitiveness.
• This is the reason why IK4 centres focus on technology transfer activities.
• This focus obliges us to maintain a close relationship with our industry, so that we can offer the knowledge, capabilities and means they need.

Basque clusters & IK4 Research Alliance
To be able to provide companies with useful technology, we need basic knowledge about their:
1. competitive position
2. capabilities
3. interests & concerns
in order to orientate OUR specialization strategy.

Basque clusters & IK4 Research Alliance
IK4 is associated with 18 clusters in the Basque Country:
ACICAEAutomotive Industry
MLC-ITSMobility & Logistics
ACLIMAEnvironment
AFVFoundry
AFMManufacturing
ALIMENTACIONFood Industry
EIKEN+Digital Content
BASQUE BIOCLUSTERBioscience
ENERGIAEnergy
HABICHospitality, Wood & Design Cluster
Foro Marítimo VascoOffshore Industry
ERAIKUNEConstruction
GAIAICTs

HEGANAerospace
MAFEXRailway Industry
What are we doing to develop our relationship with the clusters
themselves and with the other associated companies ?. Basically:
1. we try to be active members, BUT within the limits that the
clusters establish for a Research Centre (clusters are mostly
associations of companies)
2. we offer our capabilities and knowledge to support
technological initiatives, groups, documents, reflections, etc.
3. we open our facilities to host events, workshops, etc., in
collaboration with or at the request of clusters
4. we seek partnership with clusters, to participate in R&D
projects or in other initiatives that need the point of view of
companies.
Sometimes these collaborations takes place under a contract, but in
most cases the cluster is not charged for this.
Basque clusters & IK4 Research Alliance
Some examples:
1. Participation in the Cluster Strategic Plan Think-Tank
(Energy Cluster, Foundry Industry Cluster)
2. Being a member of the Advisory Board of the Offshore
Industry Cluster
3. Being a member of the Board of Directors of the GAIA,
EIKEN+ or MLC-ITS Clusters
4. Over the last two years IK4 has organised 9 technological
showcases with 6 different clusters
5. Exchanging of information with and visits from overseas
organisations in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, etc.
Basque clusters & IK4 Research Alliance
• Task 1: State-of-the-art in materials and processes for transformation and inspection and measurement.
• Task 2: Identifying the sector’s target components.
• Task 3: Expansion of study to areas of strategic interest.
Strategies designed to improve competitiveness
in the Basque aviation sector
• Task 4: Welding
• Task 5: High added-value materials.
• Task 6: Special removal processes.
• Task 7: Maps of aviation programmes.
• Task 8: Value chain analysis
Example: HEGAN Cluster (Basque aerospace sector)
Example: Basque Offshore Forum Cluster, BEÓG platform
Analysis of existing competences and those to be developed by
the companies associated with the platform
The BEÓG (Basque Wind Energy Offshore Group) is a platform of Basque companiesbelonging to the shipbuilding industry cluster of the Basque Country (Basque OffshoreForum, FMV), set up to drive forward their combined participation in the offshoresector.
IK4 was the R&D advisor in the setting up of the platform. It produced the study of the existing technical competences and those to be developed by the participating companies.

AIMS1. To produce a Map of Products, Processes and Materials of the Automotive Sector in the Basque
Country. 2. To analyse the technological trends and changes in vehicles. 3. To draw a map of the capabilities of R&D Centres and Universities in: the Basque Country, Spain,
France and Germany. 4. To establish the conclusions of the analysis by identifying:
• the sector’s areas of potential. • the deficiencies: spheres of demand where cover is not guaranteed.• and coming up with a Specialisation/Cooperation Plan
