Yet, strangely enough, the phrase “lamb of God” only occurs in one place in the entire Bible, in the first chapter of John’s gospel. When John the Baptist first sees Jesus, he exclaims: “Look, there is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.” (Jn 1:29). He echoes this shortly after (1:36). By contrast the simple title “Lamb” occurs twenty-nine times in the book of Revelation, several of which we hear on the Sundays of Easter. It’s a rich image. It first suggests innocence and vulnerability, as in the text “like a lamb that is led to the slaughterhouse”. But for the author of Revelation this Lamb is the living, glorious, all-powerful Lord of heaven and earth. The Lamb that was slain reigns victorious. This is the paradox of the paschal mystery. The one who was rejected has thrown open the gates of heaven. The one who died in weakness has been raised in power. The one who was pinned to the cross has unlocked the wellspring of mercy. An inexhaustible mystery — no wonder the Church takes fifty days to explore it. On behalf of the priests of the Parish, the Pastoral Council and Finance Committee, thanks are extended to all those who contributed food to last Sunday evening's Parish community barbecue. Members of the Council and Committee were officially commissioned in their roles by Fr Peter during the 5.30pm Mass. The timing of the ceremony was designed to endorse the growth of the Sunday evening Mass over the past year with its emphasis on youth. The community gathering was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants. Enjoy a little Wine & cheese after 6pm Mass this weekend.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER What could be more familiar than the words we recite or sing at the breaking of bread: “Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world …”?

On behalf of the priests of the Parish, the Pastoral Council and Finance Committee,

thanks are extended to all those who contributed food to last Sunday evening's Parish community barbecue. Members of the Council and Committee were officially commissioned in their roles by Fr Peter during the 5.30pm Mass.

The timing of the ceremony was designed to endorse the growth of the Sunday evening

Mass over the past year with its emphasis on youth. The community gathering was thoroughly

enjoyed by all participants.

Enjoy a little Wine & cheese after 6pm Mass this weekend.

Every two years the parish needs to renew its Planned Giving Program. On the weekend of 18-19 May, we will be seeking pledges from all parishioners who already belong to this vital program or who are willing to join. Planned Giving is the main source of income to fund our parish. Commitment forms for 2019-21 will be distributed at all Masses. More information will be provided on the value of the Planned Giving program. In the meantime thanks go to all those who have generously participated in the past.

A READING FROM THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN

Jesus showed himself again to his disciples. It was by the Sea of Tiberias, and it happened like this: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two more of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said, ‘I’m going fishing’ They replied, ‘We’ll come with you.’ They went out and got into the boat but caught nothing that night. It was light by now and there stood Jesus on the shore, though the disciples did not realise that it was Jesus. Jesus called out, ‘Have you caught anything, friends?’ And when they answered, ‘No,’ he said, ‘Throw the net out to starboard and you’ll find something.’ So they dropped the net, and there were so many fish that they could not haul it in. The disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord.’ At these words, ‘It is the Lord,’ Simon Peter, who had practically nothing on, wrapped his cloak round him and jumped into the water. The other disciples came on in the boat, towing the net and the fish; they were only about a hundred yards from land. As soon as they came ashore they saw that there was some bread there, and a charcoal fire with fish cooking on it. Jesus said, ‘Bring some of the fish you have just caught.’ Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore, full of big fish, one hundred and fifty-three of them; and in spite of there being so many the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ None of the disciples was bold enough to ask, ‘who are you?’; they knew quite well it was the Lord. Jesus then stepped forward, took the bread and gave it to them, and the same with the fish. This was third time that Jesus showed himself to the disciples after rising from the dead.
