Your arrival

Your parents will likely book your flight to England for you. In order to organize the airport transfer for you, your parents have to make sure that they inform us about your flight details at least two weeks prior to your arrival. The details we need to know are: the flight number, the arrival time, the airport you are coming from and to and which terminal you are flying into. We need to know this for your return journey too. Please also let us know about any medical conditions you may have.

Important information! While booking the flight, please note that we can only arrange the airport transfer from London Heathrow and London Gatwick! We cannot pick you up at any other airport (e.g. Luton, City or Stansted). Please also note that your arrival and departure in London must be between 9 am and 7 pm. Please also remember that the arrival in Brighton is always on a Sunday and departure on a Friday if you are staying in the residence and Saturday if you are staying in a host family or in our summer College residence! Students for whom we issue visa letters MUST show their letters to the immigration officers when they arrive in the UK!

If you are travelling with your parents, and therefore do not need an airport transfer, please let us know what time you will be at your accommodation. We need to know the approximate time so that we can inform your hosts/group leaders. In case you are under 16 years old and travelling with British Airways make sure that you carry the “Young minors travelling alone” form with you which you find among the other documents sent, it’s MANDATORY.

Unaccompanied minor service

Should your parents have booked the service for unaccompanied minors with the airline, please note that we have to be informed about this at least two weeks prior to your arrival in Brighton! As soon as we have the information we will let you know the name of the person who will meet you at the airport. Your parents will then have to give that name to the airline. Please understand that we are unable to organize this special transfer, should we receive the information later than two weeks prior to your arrival.

Important information! Please note that we only offer unaccompanied minor service if the airline requires it: Surcharge = 110 GBP one way.

Arrival in London – Transfer

After landing in London Heathrow or London Gatwick you will go through customs and take your luggage from the baggage claim. The baggage claim will show your flight number and your destination of origin. As soon as you have found your luggage, please go to the exit which will take you to the arrival hall in which you will meet the driver or your group leader who will take you to your accommodation. They will hold a Sprachcaffe sign which you should look out for. If you cannot see the driver/group leader immediately, please don’t panic! It is very well possible that the driver/group leader might be a few minutes late due to traffic conditions or because he has just picked up another student in a different terminal. If you wait longer than 15 minutes please go directly to our meeting points at London Heathrow airport. For arrivals in Terminal 1 and 3: WHSmith Shop For arrivals in Terminal 2: Arrival hall opposite the exit to international arrivals For arrivals in Terminal 4 and 5: Costa Coffee

Important information! If you have not met the driver after 15 minutes of waiting at the meeting point, please call the following phone number: +447768622309

Once you have met the driver/group leader you may have to wait for other students to arrive. The driver/group leader will tell you how long you will have to wait in this case. The transfer then takes place with a minibus and the driver will take you to our residence in Brighton. If you have booked accommodation in the Residence, please go to Reception to check in. Your group leaders will also welcome you there and they will show you your room. If you have booked accommodation in a host family, your group leaders will organize a taxi for you that will take you to your host family. As it might take some time until the transfer starts to Brighton, it is recommended to bring a snack and some drinks with you in your luggage.

Your Luggage

You should check with your airline how much luggage you are allowed to take. Normally you are allowed to take 20 kg plus one piece of hand luggage. While packing, please remember that you will have to carry your suitcase as well.

Important information! You should always have a luggage label on your suitcase and hand luggage! Money or prepaid credit cards should never be kept in your luggage!

Visa and Entry Conditions

As the United Kingdom is a member of the EU, EU nationals can enter the country with a valid passport or ID card. Non-EU nationals should check visa and entry requirements with the British consulate/embassy.

Accommodation

You will most probably find many differences in the way of living in the UK if you compare it to your home country. Usually the furnishing, the division of buildings and the cleanliness are different than in your home country. The rooms in England are usually smaller so there is generally a bed, a table and a wardrobe in your room. Wifi will be provided in every accommodation option. Homestay In general, the families will introduce you to their habits on the day of your arrival, such as: general rules, the handing over of the key, times for meals etc. You normally share the bathroom with other members of the family and other students. Bed-linen will be provided but you should bring your own towel. Please make sure that you always leave your room and bathroom clean and tidy and that you do not damage the furniture. Please be considerate to the family and avoid unnecessary noise, especially late in the evening and at night. If you are not home for a meal, please let your host family know. In an emergency your parents can of course reach you at your host family, but we ask your parents not to call your host family on a regular basis. Thank you. College (summer only) Varley Campus, our college accommodation, is located on the outskirts of Brighton. You will have your own room with bathroom en-suite. Please make sure that you leave it clean and tidy. Bed-linen and towels are provided and will be changed once per week. But please remember to bring your own beach towels. It takes about 35 minutes by bus to the city center and Brighton Pier and a 5-10 minute walk to Stanmer Park (ask your Teamer if you wish to borrow some sports equipment (football, frisbies, volleyball etc.). Residence West Beach Hotel is a Sprachcaffe-owned hotel right at the seafront of Brighton. You will be accommodated in 3- to 4- bedded rooms and share a bathroom with other students. There is a sink in your room with drinkable water, a microwave and a fridge to store food and cold drinks. Bed-linen and towels are provided and will be changed once per week. Please remember to bring your own beach towels. We also have a free safe in the residence for our students. Please note that between 9pm and 7am the safe is not accessible due to security reasons. Please note that we cannot promise that you will be the only student of your nationality in your accommodation.

Meals

“When in Rome do as the Romans do”… In England the evening meal is the main meal of the day. For breakfast you will normally have cereal, toast, jam, coffee or tea. A small snack, such as a sandwich, some crisps and a soft drink, is commonly eaten at lunch time. It is likely that the eating habits are likely to be very different to those you are used to in your home country. We think everyone should try a traditional roast dinner whilst staying in the UK.

Pocket money

It is difficult to say how much pocket money you should take with you since the amount depends on age and individual habits. The organized leisure programme with excursions, sport or beach party is already included. Our suggestion is about £ 120-150 pocket money per week. It is best to change money locally since the exchange rate is usually better. You can also take prepaid credit cards of course. Please refer to your bank for further information about the prepaid credit cards. We recommend an early application. It is still advisable to take a bit of cash for the first few days (e.g. to phone home). If you are staying with a host family, please remember that you might have to take the bus to school every day. You should calculate this as well when thinking about how much pocket money to take. A bus ride in Brighton costs £2.60. You can also buy a daily pass for £5 or a weekly pass which costs around £20 from the school. Since the bus prices change every year you can also check this link for the current prices: http://www.buses.co.uk/tickets/index.aspx

Please note that for some activities we will use public transport which is not included in the package. Everyone should therefore buy a weekly pass for public transport.

Important information! Our suggestion is to take about £ 120-150 pocket money per week.

We recommend taking a bit more money with you since it is difficult to transfer money from your home country to the destination of your language course.

The school – Sprachcaffe Languages Plus

Please be on time for school every day, you should arrive on schedule at 08:30 a.m. The entry test should be done online prior to arrival. Please do the test carefully, because your language skills will be determined and it is used as a basis to divide all students into learning groups.

Important information! If you have problems or are dissatisfied, please talk to our local team or your group leader immediately. They will support you in every way they can.

The lessons

All teachers have academic qualifications as well as foreign language teaching experience. They are very enthusiastic and are always willing to answer any questions you might have. The lesson plans vary: As well as the indispensable grammar and vocabulary learning we also put emphasis on communicative methods of learning. Role-plays and a lot of active speaking help you to overcome your fear of speaking the new language. The teachers also utilize current affairs topics such as society and culture in the form of newspaper articles, radio broadcasts or TV programmes. Our language courses will only be held in English to maximize your immersion in the language. Please ensure you bring paper and a pen with you to class.

Since the course groups are split according to language levels, participants for both the standard and intensive course can be in one group together. The maximum number of participants in one course is 15. On the recommendation of the teacher a student can be put into a higher or lower level class during the course.

Important information! The timetable might change slightly because of organizational reasons. In summer the lessons may take place in the afternoon.

Unfortunately classes which fall on public holidays cannot be made up. You will find information about the UK’s public holidays in our brochure.

Helpful information

Health care in the UK If you get sick while you are in the UK, your group leaders will take you to a doctor. Health care in the UK is usually free, unless you need to see a dentist or you need to see a doctor due to a pre existing medical condition (e.g. diabetes). If you need to buy medication, please note that this is not free. We highly recommend taking out health and travel insurance and taking some extra money in case you get sick.

Insurance We recommend taking health and travel insurance. If you lose your luggage, if damage occurs or valuable items are missing it is always annoying and a reimbursement without insurance is a time-consuming process. Clothes It is best to take casual clothes with you. We recommend packing a warm pullover, as it can get cold in the evenings – even during the summer. For excursions we recommend a pair of practical shoes. Something a little fancier would also be good for special occasions and for parties. If you would like to do sport, take your sports clothes and shoes as well. Don’t forget to pack your swimming things. Phone The international code for England is 0044, plus the phone number. If you want to call your home country, please check with your parents prior to your departure what your country code is. Money The official currency in the UK is £, Pound Sterling. Your bank can give you the exact exchange rate. It is cheaper to change money in the UK, but we recommend taking a little bit of pocket-money for the first weekend. Safe In the residence there is a safe which students can use to keep their documents/money. Please note that access to the safe is restricted so if you need to take things out of the safe please ask at reception at which times you can do this. For students staying in a host family we highly recommend taking prepaid credit cards or locking money/documents in your suitcase whenever you go out. Electricity 240 volts. You will probably need an adaptor. Time difference In England they are on Greenwich Mean Time GMT. Depending on your home country you might have to change your watch. Documents Better to be safe than sorry! Please make a copy of all your important travel documents. For example: Flight tickets, insurance policy and passport. In case you lose important documents it helps if you have such copies. Please keep the copies separate from the original documents. Public holidays Unfortunately classes that fall on public holidays cannot be made up. You will find information about the UK’s public holidays in our brochure. Climate The climate in the south of England is dominated by the warm Gulf Stream. On the coast, however, there are rain showers quite often, so don’t forget to pack your umbrella or rain jacket. The average temperature is between 0 degrees in winter and 30 degrees in summer.

Brighton

When Brighton became a favorite vacation spot of the Royal Family in the 18th century, much of the English high class society followed. As a result, Brighton immediately became synonymous with glamour and sophistication, and still today, Brighton is regarded as a hip place. To experience it, visit the "Lanes", a collection of narrow alleys now filled with antique shops, restaurants, bistros and pubs. Originally a small fishing village, some parts of Brighton still have the old fashioned feel while also the two universities in town make Brighton a very cosmopolitan and lively city.

The Royal Pavilion: The Royal Pavilion in Brighton has been a vacation resort for three English monarchs. Its interior is inspired by the Oriental style while its exterior architecture reflects Indian style.

Brighton Pier: Brighton Pier was inaugurated on May 20, 1899. Come enjoy the view from the sea and take home the most memorable photos of your stay.

Leisure Programme

Excursions

If you are staying for two weeks, one full day and two half-day excursions are included in the price. If you are staying for three weeks you will be taking part in two full day trips and three half-day trips. The trips may take you to the following places: London Oxford Cambridge Eastbourne Portsmouth Please note that the activities and trips might slightly vary depending on weather conditions and number of students. There are usually also some extra activities offered that you can book for a small fee once you are in Brighton.

Supervision

Our Teamers supervise the leisure programme. Please be aware that Sprachcaffe Languages Plus is only responsible for students while supervised during the leisure programme. We expect you to behave in a respectful way and we are not responsible if you do not respect the rules or act at your own risk. All activities and excursions on the leisure programme are supervised by the Teamers from Monday to Saturday. For residence students Sunday may be a free day, when you don’t have any activities or classes and you will not be supervised. There may also be one evening a week of unsupervised free time. We recommend you stay at the residence or college area during unsupervised times. For host family students you will have one or two host family evenings and Sunday is host family day. This is an opportunity to spend time with your host family or on Sundays we will have some supervised activities in Brighton center. When you are unsupervised, you should still behave according to our rules: responsibly, giving consideration to your personal safety and to the law. We will ask you at least three days before any unsupervised free time for details of your plans during your free time, selected from a range of suggested activities which we will provide you with. The information we need from you is:

- Where you are going and what you are doing - What time you are leaving from and returning to your accommodation - How you are travelling - Who you are going with (you cannot go alone) - A phone number to contact you or a member of your group

We will let you know if there is anything to be aware of with your trip / activity to stay safe. If we consider your suggested plans to be too risky, we will ask you to make other plans or suggest more appropriate activities / locations. We will also randomly check students on these trips/activities to make sure you are doing what you planned. Any students who do not follow their plans will be grounded for all future unsupervised periods and will need to report to the school/residence/college. Optional excursions may also be available, these will be at an additional cost and will be subject to reaching the minimum number of participants required. If you have any questions, speak to a member of Sprachcaffe staff. You must return to your homestay by 10:00pm every night.
