For the fourth year in a row, The Downtown Hays Development Corporation will play host to the Annual Wine & Steins, Saturday, September 14. Participating downtown businesses will provide a sample of select wines and microbrews, as well as hors d’oeuvres for reservation holders to enjoy during the evening. Participants will then stroll to the post-stroll celebration and auction held in the parking lot of the Emprise Bank. The post stroll gathering will feature live music, complimentary beverages, as well as an auction consisting of exclusive dinner packages, artwork, sports packages and much more! Only 200 reservations will be sold and will be accepted at a later date. Proceeds from the event will go towards Downtown Hays Development Corporation operations, aesthetic improvements and long-term projects. Continued growth of our Historic Downtown will be featured during the event.

Operation Renewal is an event in which Chamber Ambassadors visit businesses and

deliver new 2014 membership window decals. This one-on-one opportunity connects the Chamber with its mem-bers, allowing you to share information about your business and ask questions regarding your Chamber membership.

This year, we would like to pose two questions that will help us continue to provide quality service.

1. What do you value most about the Chamber?

2. What additional program or service would your business benefit from?

Our goal is to continue to promote prosperity in the community through business, leadership and growth. Operation Renewal is an important program to help in-crease your knowledge of the Chamber and the Cham-ber’s knowledge about your industry.

At the Chamber, we always look for ways to maintain financial stability so we can offer quality programs to our members at af-fordable costs. (Sounds a little like running a business, doesn’t it?)

We are so excited to partner with Central Holidays, a group tour operator specializing in trav-el through Europe. This partner-ship will allow interested travelers (Chamber members and beyond) to affordably connect with the world.

In turn, the Chamber will receive a referral fee for every traveler, allowing us to take advantage of a unique funding opportunity. Plus, the Hays Area Chamber will serve as the official host and share in the experience with you.

I personally met the general manager last spring and have been exploring the feasibility of such adventures since then.

Developmental Services of North-west Kansas launched a Planned Giving Program and new website, www.dsnwkgiftlegacy.com. The site features up-to-date facts and in-formation on taxes, gifts, wills and finances.

Smoky Hills Public Television added a new element to its annual Valentines & Wines fundraiser. This year, Jimmy Dee and the Fabulous Destinations will cap off the Feb. 15 event with a dance beginning at 8:30 p.m. at Hays American Legion.

Heartland Community Founda-tion, which consists of Rooks, Trego and Ellis counties, announced the Plainville Community Foundation established a $100,000 endowed fund with them The HCF works with individuals, churches, schools, foundations, health organizations, hospitals, the arts and other chari-table groups to help them establish permanently endowed funds.

The Downtown Hays Development Corp. is looking for new members to join the 2014 Blues, BBQ & Bargains committee. This year’s event will be July 18 to 20 and will include every-one’s favorites: Kids-Q barbecuing contest, BBQ Bucks to sample contes-tants’ food, blues bands, downtown sidewalk sales, and plenty of drinks to keep the summer heat at bay. Golden Belt Bank is proud to an-nounce the addition of loan officer Ja-son Ball to their team. Ball graduated from Hays High School and attended

Fort Hays State Univer-sity, where he earned his BBA in accounting and minored in finance. While attending FHSU, he was active in Fel-lowship of Christian Athletes, Tiger Invest-

ments, the Accounting Club, and was a member of the men’s basketball team. He is working on his MBA.

Nick Schwien has been named the new managing editor of The Hays Daily News. Schwien has been with the HDN for 16 years, and most re-cently served as the chief copy editor.

Schwien, a graduate of Fort Hays State University, began as a sports stringer with the HDN while still in col-lege. Following gradu-ation, he was hired as a full-time sports

reporter and later promoted to as-sistant sports editor. In 2004, Schwien received a job as a copy editor and quickly was promoted to chief copy editor. Schwien is an active member at Celebration Community Church, a member of Hays USD 489 facilities needs committee, and a volunteer coach for Hays Recreation Commis-sion. In addition, his free time is spent with his wife, Jessica, and their two children, Brenna and Kale.

North Central Kansas Technical College, with campuses in Beloit and Hays, was recently ranked the No. 7 two-year college in the United States by Create a Career, a leading resource for career information. This was the third national ranking for NCK Tech in 2013 following the No. 6 ranking by the TheBestSchools.org, and the No. 7 ranking by Bankrate.com. NCK Tech’s Kansas Institute of Underground Technology was cited as an example of innovative collabo-ration with the Kansas Department of Commerce and local businesses.

Emprise Bank temporarily closed

Commerce Bank in Hays named Deron O’Connor as market presi-dent. In his new role, O’Connor will

be responsible for the overall adminis-tration of Commerce Bank’s Hays market. O’Connor has 13 years of banking experience at Commerce and leads the commercial

HAYP 60 “Happy Hour”Looking for more opportunities

to network and socialize? Tuesday, Feb. 25, the HAYPs are

rolling out a new program called HAYP 60 at Precision Valley Golf Center from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

This informal event will be held the last Tuesday of every month at a different Chamber venue.
