Upcoming

Events

Welcome to a special newsletter. This newsletter will focus on writing, and will include some of the work students have written over recent

weeks.

Learning to write is an important part of the curriculum, and each class spends a considerable amount of time learning how to write

in different ways and for different purposes, for example, writing an entertaining story, writing a factual report, or writing a persuasive

opinion piece.

Writing remains an important skill. Writing is a way of communicating. By developing effective writing skills, we can communicate

meaningfully in a variety of ways. In fact, in this digital age, writing is becoming even more important, as even more communication

is done by writing, whether it be through social media, email, blogs, or writing and creating engaging content or a website.

Writing is a valuable learning skill. It allows us to collect our thoughts and channel them, to put them together in a cohesive and

organised way. It is also a great creative skill. Through writing we can create stories, imagine possibilities and explore new ideas.

In this newsletter you can read the written work of some of the students from each class. Later in the year, during Term 4, the

school will release a book containing writing work of each student in the school.

I hope you enjoy the read.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten completed their writing unit on information reports this week. The chosen topic is frogs, partially inspired by the real frogs that live

in the Kindergarten room (provided by Mrs Dugan). Students have been learning about the features of information reports and have enjoyed

researching facts about frogs. They particularly liked discovering the existence of the tomato frog! We used these facts to write the class

information report below. This week, students read the information report to our target audience, Mrs Dugan the frog enthusiast! They also drew

a picture of a frog to complete their information report.

Frogs are amphibians. They live on land and water.

Frogs can be different sizes and colours. They can climb, hop and swim. They live in rainforests all over the world. They eat snails,

worms, spiders and insects.

Year One and Two

This term in Writing Year One and Two students have learnt about informative writing, or writing non-fiction. They have learnt how to write information reports, explanations, instructions, biographies, interviews, and this week they even wrote an autobiography. Here is a sample of work the students have done over this term.

An amphibian lays their eggs in water or damp places. Salamanders have tails and if they have bright colours that means they taste

bad. Some frogs are different colours. Some jump high and some jump low.

Written by Charlette

Honey comes from bees. Honeycomb gets made by bees. Bees live in hives. You can eat the honey on toast. Honey is put in jars.

Honey tastes sweet.

Written by Lachlan

A horse eats grass, carrots, apples and hay. A horse has a mane and a tail that is hair. A horse runs fast, and walking is called trotting.

A horse is big and the baby is small. A horse has four legs. Some horses can be white, black or brown.

Sharks are fish. Some sharks are big, some are small. The biggest one is a megaladon. The second biggest is a whale shark. Some

sharks hide deep in oceans. Some people catch sharks to eat them. Sharks are an important part of life in our oceans.

Year Three and Four

This term in 3/4, students have been learning to write stories that use techniques to make their writing more interesting and engaging. This includes creating a ‘sizzling start’, followed by a plot line with a ‘problem’ that needs to be resolved. Arriving at an exciting ending might require some ‘tightening tension’, and we try to ‘ban the boring bits’, while using colourful vocabulary. Below is a sample of some of the stories written in the last fortnight. The topic given was “He/She pushed the button and then everything changed…” Enjoy!

I PUSHED THE BUTTON AND EVERYTHING CHANGED…

The first thing I saw was the museum. Ok, Dorrie and I were walking past the museum and we decided to go in. We saw statues of

dinosaurs and Dorrie and I saw a button on the wall. We got dragged into pushing the button. We pressed the button and everything

changed.

Suddenly Dorrie saw the T-rex move. She was so frightened that she screamed so loudly that everybody was looking at her. But she

recognized it was not people, it was dinosaurs. She ran and ran screaming. She fell over and saw a button. She quickly pressed the

button and it got worse. I realized I had gone back in time. I smelt something I have smelt before. I picked it up and ate it. I Realized

it was poo. I felt like throwing up. “Ah!”

As I screamed there were dinosaurs everywhere. I ran as fast as I could. Then I saw the biggest shadow ever and I saw it was my BFF

Dorrie. She told me the whole story of how she got here. Then I screamed as the dinosaur picked her up and somehow, they were

hugging. Then it let her go gently. Dorrie cried. Then he picked me up. I screamed. Then I was confused because the dinosaur was

being gentle and kind to me too. We played together for a little while.

Then Dorrie and I pressed the button and we went back to the museum like nothing happened.

The End.

The Coloured Button

Hello my name is Bella and my best friend is here with me, Buddy.

Buddy is my dog and we went on an adventure to get some food.

We climbed in the elevator to go down. There was a lot of coloured button on the side of the elevator.

I pushed the red button and everything changed.

Buddy began to talk.

I screamed and was very surprised.

“How can you talk Buddy? This is amazing! I’ve never Knew that you had super powers.”

Buddy said: ‘I didn’t either!’

I said: we are not going to press that red button again.

You are going to talk to me forever! Let’s get some food.

Suddenly the elevator began to shake side to side.

I pressed in a hurry the blue button.

The one side panel opened up and I saw the most amazing thing ever.

Lollies wherever you looked. Just lollies! This is the best food ever.

We’re going to just stay here.

As soon as I got close to the lollies the elevator began to move.

Buddy pressed the green button.

saw the biggest hotdogs in the world.

Food finally food buddy! Buddy said, “what dogs… Hot dogs!”

“Yes Buddy, it is delicious! It is just meat and bread. We need to stay here and eat!

I PUSHED THE BUTTEN AND EVERYTHING CHANGED…

I opened my eyes. I pushed the button on the wall in the vet. Mum was testing a lost dog. I saw a button “I have to press that button”.

Then I saw a dog. I heard someone talk. They said, “hey there.”

“Mum? I’m hot,” I said.

“It’s your fur,” said the dog.

I was confused and surprised. “I don’t have…OK WHAT IS HAPPENING!”

“You’re a dog duh,” said the dog.

“No, I’m human,” I said.

“Well you don’t look like one,” said a cat.

I thought I was dreaming. “Where’s the bathroom?” I said.

“Where ever you want! You’re a dog” said the cat.

They say their names are Max and Midnight. I think they just came up with that.

“How do I change back?” I said.

“Follow me,” said Max.

“Pee on this tree.”

“What!” I yelled.

“It’s the only way,” he said.

“Ok,” I said firmly.

“Done” I said.

“That was embarrassing but people think I’m a dog and its normal for a dog”. “Right?” I said in my head.

“Ok now, bark at a squirrel” said Max.

“ROUGH! ROUGH!” I barked.

“Check” said Max.

“Last thing, eat kibble” said Max.

“Ok” I said. “Yum! Yum! Yum!”

BURB! “Excuse me!”

My cheeks went red. “Yay, I’m human again! Ok how do I destroy that button? Max said a hammer would hit it and I would be a

dog again. I know, I’ll hit it from the top CRASH! I DID IT!”

“Mum are you done?”

“Yes,” she said.

THE END

Written by Kayla

I PUSHED THE BUTTON AND EVERYTHING CHANGED…

Bang, I saw a lot of people crowding me. Someone shoved food into my mouth because I felt all drowsy and weak and then they

gave me this really weird brush like thing that I’ve never seen before and they told me it was a chimney sweep’s brush but they didn’t

tell me how to use it.

Now this is what actually happened. I was at school and I was looking for a calculator and I saw this orange flashing light in the

cupboard. I pushed it and it made a clear door. I walked through it and Bang! That’s all I heard and then I was in 19th century

England. I couldn’t see much because there was a big fireplace in front of me and I walked into it and everything went black.

The next day someone dropped a cold bucket of water on my head. I figured out that I was outside. The sky was pitch black and

there was a lot of smog in the air. I couldn’t smell anything except smoke and it smelt like flowers, animal poo and sewage. I saw a

lot of people crowding me. I asked them what the year was. They said it was 1785 and I told them I was from 2020. They started

chucking rotten food at me because they thought I was crazy so they called the police. They took me to jail and asked me lots of

questions, like how did you get here and I said “a portal”.

“Where are you from? “the police asked.

“Australia” I said.

The police yelled, “what????”

“I mean the Great South Land that Captain Cook discovered a few years ago”.

The police got upset. So, I quickly asked, “May I please go to the toilet?” They let me go.

First, I looked around and I saw the same cupboard as in my classroom. So, after I went to the toilet I sneaked into the cupboard. I

saw the same orange button. I had to fight with myself for about 5 minutes to decide if I should push the button. I found the calculator

I was looking for. So, I grabbed the calculator and then I pushed the orange button. I travelled back to school without the police

noticing me and then my teacher Mrs. Fischer asked me why do I need a calculator. I said that my question on my Maths work says

that I can use a calculator and then she walked away without knowing where I just had been!

The Popular Button

I pushed the button and everything changed…Bang! I saw a lot of people crowding me, someone shoved food into my mouth

because, I felt all weak, and then they gave me this very heavy thing that I’ve never seen before. They told me it was a rocket

launcher but they never told me what to do with it…

I was not sure what the button may have done to me but I felt it made me ‘famous’ or ‘popular’ in other words. I pressed it once

again, everyone looked confused and walked away. I pressed it again and everyone came back except this one girl who went

home and came back with 3 hot, blueberry muffins and gave them to me and looked very happy about it.

I pressed it yet again and everyone walked away so I walked away with the rocket launcher, the muffins and the button. As I was

walking back into my home, I was very confused because it was a red shiny button in my mailbox. I ate a muffin and thought, I could

use it at school! My parents were on a 3-week holiday to France for their 10th anniversary so, they would never know I had a ROCKET

LAUNCHER in their house. I am 16 so I was fine. The girl who gave me the muffins was my neighbour and I could hear her next door

confused on where her muffins were. I went to sleep and before I was asleep, I thought I would call it the ‘Popular Button’ but then I

slept to the next morning.

The next morning, I had a shower, got dressed, ate my breakfast, blow dried my hair, brushed and styled my hair, packed my bag,

put on my shoes and started me 15-minute walk to school and thought, since I had the button everyone would like me because me

and my friend which by the way her name is Vania and she also has glasses and braces. Nobody liked us because of that or wouldn’t

even sit next to us in class, on the bus even at lunch! So, as I arrived at school, I took off my braces and glasses except it was a little

hard to see. I also took my hair and tied my jumper around my waist like the ‘cool kids’. As I walked in everyone looked at me like

they never seen or met me before so once again, I pressed the button…Everyone came running at me except my friend so I thought

it did not work on people that were my friends because like the other kids said, me and her were ‘dorks’ so it would not work on

Vania, my friend.

I was kind of selfish and ditched her, everyone wanted to sit next to me in the classroom and on the bus and they even saved me a

seat at the back which is where the ‘cool kids’ normally sit. My friend looked at me numb but inside she was sad and angry. The next

day, on Thursday was the same but I used the rocket launcher on the oval and everyone thought I was extra cool and I even got

free canteen lunch! Next day on Friday, little did I know that it would not work because on the bottom of the button in small print it

said (WARNING:2 Day Use) Then I arrived at school nobody thought I was cool and nobody sat next to me and I was confused and

I presses it about 10 times and it did not work! Nobody sat next to me at lunch so I stood up and said, “Why? Just Why?”, I screamed

“Why not me?”

I was crying and everyone looked confused. So, the next day on Saturday me and my ex friend were friends again and we went to

the movies and were friends again. As we were in the cinema, I thought, I shouldn’t have token the ‘popular button’ for granted.

When the movie was done, I ordered an uber and went home, I smashed the button with a hammer and I threw it in the red bin.

On Monday, I went to school like normal but nobody was there, so I walked in the classroom and the lights were off and then they

suddenly turned on and everyone screamed, “Surprise!”

It was all a big prank! They set it but with walkie talkies and watched me so when I pressed it everyone would come! I laughed, I was

very happy that my friend did this with me! She explained that everyone wanted to be friends with her for some reason so she set

that up and they are now my friends, I thought it kind of went wrong when I got upset and I really did think she was laughing for some

reason in the movies! And the rocket launcher was fake! I said, “You got me guys, great job!”

Me and all my new friends had an awesome 5 years together and lived happily ever after.

Year Five and Six

This term Year 5/6 have participated in a gold game so that they could experience the highs and lows of life in the 1850’s. They were asked to

write a daily journal entry into their diary books, writing from the perspective of a gold miner living in the goldfields. Students wrote about their

gold finds, being robbed or even being struck down with influenza during an epidemic. When fortune did meet them, they would often be

disappointed at the low gold price being offered by the assayer.

Year 5/6 have also been writing letters to students at a Christian School in Emerald in Far North Queensland. This is an ongoing commitment

and will continue until the end of the year.

Dear Diary,

The police are checking my licence over and over. Some one else got arrested. They also captured a bushranger today and took

another miner away.

It’s nearly 40°C all day, every day.

Sometimes it’s very annoying when I don’t find gold, and someone goes to the same spot, and finds gold, not much, but ist still gold.

I am always in crowds, so if I find gold, everyone will see.

My bed is son uncomfortable. I haven’t slept in days, the man in the tent next to me is always snoring and it is keeping me awake.

Tonight, I had bread, soup and potatoes for dinner. Not the best meal, but I’ve certainly had worse.

I need to save up and get more clothes, my pants have become very loose and my shirt is getting thin.

By for now. I’m off to try and get some sleep.

Dear Diary,

I have 176.10 pounds all together. Today was a normal day for me. Today I had treacle dumplings for breakfast, and sheep stew for

dinner.

Guess what!! My friend found this really big nugget, it’s like the same size as the welcome stranger gold nugget, Guess what else, she

is giving some of it to me. YAY!! I screamed my head off. I also found 3oz of gold today.

The bushranger was let out of jail, I know right, that’s crazy. We might get robbed soon if the bushranger hasn’t learnt his lesson.

Today was a fun but a hard day.

Bye diary!

Dear young Lizzy 21/5/1858

The morning was chilly n’ freezing and while I was out, my tent caught fire because apparently Jimmy’s campfire set fire to my tent but that didn’t matter because when I went to the assay office I assayed 48 oz of gold and got 120 pounds for my gold. I am amazed I have so much money. So much that I had a bid for a butcher shop and bought it for 79 pounds. I hope soon we can strike gold n’ become rich so we can live in that hotel in Bathurst that you’ve been dreaming about.

Sincerely, Cooper

18-October-1854

Dearest Elisabeth,

I trust this letter finds you in good health and that your eldest brother is faring well after his nasty fall off the ladder.

This week has been somewhat troubling. On Monday Johnathan Devarn from the next tent overset our camp on fire whist my husband was out

panning and I was out getting supplies from the general store. We were terribly startled when we got back to the camp…. We saw that our tent

had been burnt to the ground, so we had to get a new one, it is a 7 mile walk to the nearest town and the tent cost 8 pounds.

When we got back we were up for yet another surprise my sisters shop had been looted, Our spoons had been taken and the stew that I had made

earlier had been tipped out and it was all over the red dusty dirt: after such a day all I could do was weep and hope that the next would be

better…. Please pray for us dear Elisabeth

Tuesday, the Government Officials whom check the mining licences came into town, everyone was worried, people fled in every direction, under

tables, to the creek, some even tried to hide under logs. We tried to hide but one of them grabbed Tristan (my Husband) and started yelling at us,

before I could do anything I was bound and they asked to see my license. As you know, dearest Elisabeth, I shan’t lie so my silence spoke for me.

They hogtied Tristan and half beat him to death…. It was a ghastly sight to see it was just so jolly unfair…. And what worse it’s happening

more and more…. Just the other week James Scobie was murdered by them. His poor wife and Kids, it’s such a shame. Tristan and some of his

mates have been talking about rebelling against them, Peter Lalor shall lead them….

Wednesday, everyone was cleaning up and recovering from the raids yesterday .The Eureka Hotel was burnt down today. Some say, James

Scobie’s killer owned it.

I am a kind and considerate person who loves soccer, maths, and chess but dislikes English and long car trips. When I grow up, I want

Chapter 5

The most special memory I have is when my family went to QLD for the first time about 3 years ago. Mum, Dad, my siblings, nan and

myself flew to QLD so my dad Marcus could meet our family that he had never met. I remember been nervous and scared about

getting on to a big plane.

We flew to Gladstone so dad Marcus could meet my aunty, uncle and cousins. On the plane is was amazing seeing all the houses

and towns underneath us they looked so small. The plane was a whole new experience the shaking and the feeling I got when the

plane landed. The pit of my stomach dropped, and my ears blocked it was the weirdest thing I had ever felt.

When we got off the plane and on to the tarmac I was so relieved to be standing on the ground.

Whilst in Gladstone we done a lot of different things. We went to the water park, went shopping, spent time with our family and went

in my Aunty deb’s spa.

My family don’t go on a lot of holidays as we are a big family and dad is the only one who works but the holiday to QLD was the

best.

Believe in yourself!!

Scared of other people’s opinions

There once was girl named Daisy, she had a dream to dance in front of everyone, but she was scared of one thing and that one

thing was that everyone was going to pick on her because she has only one arm. So every day she would wake up and always

would think of it and would always tell her friends all the time about it but her friends would just say, “You should do it if it’s your

dream.” She kept on saying “But I am scared because I don't look like everyone else.” Her friends kept saying, “It doesn't matter what

other people think of you. You are pretty and gorgeous don't worry what other people think.”

Daisy and her friends

The next day she woke up still thinking about it and how much it would mean to her and then she realized that her best friend

Mackenzie was a fairy. She called Mackenzie over and asked her to bring her fairy wand, so she came over and asked, “What do

you need Daisy?’’ Daisy said, “I need you to send me to the dance competitions please.’’ “Fine I will, ok bye” So Daisy went to the

competitions she went brave, happy and excited until she got up on stage and started dancing but there was a group of girls who

were laughing at her so Daisy started crying and ran off the stage. Her friend Mackenzie saw her run off so she went after her and

Daisy said to Mackenzie, “Did you see those girls laugh at me?” Mackenzie didn't know what she was talking about and Daisy said,

“Just send me back home now please.” So, Mackenzie sent her home.

The dance competitions go wrong

The day after the dance competitions went wrong with the girls laughing at her, Daisy woke up and all she was thinking about was

what happened yesterday. So, she decided to go over to her friend Mackenzie’s house where they were having a party. When she

arrived to the party everyone asked how was it and Daisy said, “It was terrible there were these girls who just kept laughing at me so

I ran off the stage and I will never go back again. I just wish I was perfect like other people.” Her friends kept saying, “Remember

what we said to you before and you went? After the party she went home and she was still thinking about it so she thought about it

and said, “Fine I will have another go.”

The day that changed my life

Daisy woke up and said to herself, “Whatever happens it going to be okay.” She got ready and went to her friend Mackenzie’s house

again. So, she when she got there she said to Mackenzie, “Guess what!” Mackenzie said what with a big smile on her face. Daisy

told Mackenzie that she was going to do another dance competition, but she said to Mackenzie, “Can you please use your wand

to give me an arm?” So, her friend Mackenzie said YES and sent Daisy to the dance competition. Daisy walked on that stage and

danced her heart out and then as soon as she finished her dancing, she was standing on the stage just listening to everyone clapping

and shouting her name so she ran off the stage in happy tears and she hugged her friend Mackenzie so hard and said, “Thank you

for bringing me back and giving me an arm for another chance it was so worth it thank you.” But what Daisy did not know is that she

is going to State to dance. When she found out, she started crying and her friend Mackenzie said, “Let's go home and celebrate.”

So, they went home.

Mackenzie goes to State dance

After they went home, they went to celebrate but she really wanted to tell the rest of her friends, so Mackenzie sent a party to her

house and they all went there. So when they all got there Daisy said to them, “I have to tell you something, I went back to the dance

competition but I only went because asked Mackenzie to use her fairy wand to give me an arm but I am now going to State to

dance. They all screamed and said really and that night they just partied.

Two days later

It's been a couple days now but there is only four more days till State and I cannot wait I am so excited to go all my friends are

coming I am so happy that my friend Mackenzie gave me an arm with her fairy wand. Four days later, the day when my dream

came true, we got ready and went even though I still have one half arm it doesn't matter what others think of me anymore me and

my friends went to State.

State dance

I got on the stage even though I was a little nervous I still danced my heart out all I could hear was clapping and my friends say, “Go

Daisy”, so I kept on dancing and dancing and when I finished dancing I ran off the stage and said to myself, “I hope I win but even

if I don’t win I still have other opportunities.”

So Daisy and Mackenzie and there other friends waited backstage for the results of who win come in

The final results

Judges announced, “and the winner is Daisy!” No way! really, I cannot believe I won, my dream has actually come true now

YAYAYAYA! I WON! I WON!

Then all Daisy’s friends came and celebrated on stage.

When the Water Stops Flowing

Dancing on the big stage, the music loud but soft, the lights on me with no crowd, just an empty building that oddly smelt like

lavender.

I felt happy and alive while spinning in the air. Landing on my feet was quite hard, but I got used to it after a while. My silk shoes were

slowly wearing out, but I didn’t mind.

People often asked me why I danced when I could have had a different career and lifestyle. It was simple. I didn’t want a regular

job or life, I wanted to be on the stage, to see the storyline that went with our movements, to be doing and living my childhood

dream. That’s all I wanted.

The music came to a halt and I left the stage. As I was leaving the stage, I grabbed my rough towel and my cold water bottle. As I

took my last step, I fell to the ground with a ‘thud’. I rubbed my now sore leg and remembered what my mum said to me a couple

years back. “Honey, try not to overwork yourself, I know how stuck you get in ballet.” Guess I should start listening to other people’s

advice.

It was starting to get dark outside, so I sat down at the big window and watched the birds flying and people walking down the

pathways. New York’s not as high end as I thought it was, but I love it, nonetheless.

I sighed to myself happily as I remembered those happy memories. I never appreciated those moments, but now that I’m older, I

really value my younger days. Ballet has always been in my life in some way. After I quit dancing a couple years ago, my

granddaughter also started doing ballet. I never imagined that later in life I would be doing anything else; but I always had a love

for writing, so that was the only other thing I wanted to do.

I looked down at my lap and started writing my memories down. The black ink painted the calloused pages, with each stroke I made,

I gently pressed down on the book, filled six pages and then closed it.

I remembered the time in class when my friend Cindy fell and broke her foot. For a little while she could not come in for dance, but

when her foot healed, she always complained about it hurting. Cindy was the teacher’s favourite student in class and in school, she

was really kind but very noisy. Hopefully, she’s doing well now.

When I first started dancing, I could feel the wind in my hair and all eyes on me, it is an indescribable feeling. Our practice room

always smelt of new paint and rusted metal until the girls had their perfume everywhere, then it smelt like rose’s, vanilla and sugar.

Whenever anyone made a mistake in the practice room our teacher would get really upset and start yelling - I guess because she

was passionate and serious about dancing and was upset when we kept messing up. Or maybe she just didn’t like us, who knows,

but dancing was hard sometimes - especially as a child. I do understand though that the chattering in the room was sometimes

unbearable and a lot of the time the girls always argued about who would get to wear what, or who would do the makeup, but we

always made up…

Tears poured down my eyes without me noticing. I quickly wiped them away and ate now cold food the nurses had left for my lunch.

The moral of the story is no matter how hard a dream may be, always go after it, you’ll appreciate it later in life.
