Annual Holiday TraditionsWhitaker Center is a place to explore and discover. Our greatest reward is knowing that we are helping families learn together and the holiday season is a great time to experience the full range of opportunities in art and science at Whitaker Center.

As an annual tradition, Holiday Trains and Trees will fill the Gloria M. Olewine Gallery in Harsco Science Center. The gallery will be transformed into a wonderland filled with extravagantly decorated holiday trees and 3,000 square feet of model railroad displays. The model railroads feature a number of railroads of different sizes, from the miniature HO-gauge trains to G-gauge trains designed for outdoor installation in gardens. While you are visiting, you can also enjoy each of the more than 100 interactive exhibits on all three levels of the science center.

Select Medical Digital Cinema will certainly be part of our holiday celebrations with a series of weekend presentations of classic holiday films. Beginning on November 6, we will present these classic films on our giant four and one-half story screen each weekend through December 13. The film festival will include perennial favorites Polar Express 3D, A Christmas Story and A Christmas Carol 3D. The complete line up and show times are available on our website at whitakercenter.org.

Sunoco Performance Theater will also be filled with holiday themed performances beginning in November, with a production of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas from our resident theater company, Theatre Harrisburg. White Christmas will be performed by gifted residents of the region and presented by a company that has been bringing live performing arts to our community since 1926.

In December, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB) will once again present George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker.™ Only a few companies are granted the rights to perform this classic story choreographed by a legend in the world of ballet and in 1991 CPYB became the only pre-professional company in the country licensed to perform George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker.™

In addition, Whitaker Center will be presenting Holidays with The Manhattan Transfer in Sunoco Performance Theater presented by Capital Blue Cross and showcase sponsored by Sunoco Logistics Partners, L.P. on December 16. Another exciting Whitaker Center Presents at the Forum show will feature an electrifying performance of Wizards of Winter on December 29.

Fill your holidays with arts and science with an inspiring visit to Whitaker Center where you can find something special for all ages.

Holidays with The Manhattan Transfer Presented by

Wednesday, December 16 / Sunoco Performance Theater, 7:30pm

It has been nearly forty years since Tim Hauser, a former Madison Avenue marketing executive, paid his bills by driving a New York City cab. At the same time, he aspired to form a harmony vocal quartet sui generis that could authentically embrace varied musical styles, and still create something wholly unique in the field of American popular song. Soon after, The Manhattan Transfer would become the multi-Grammy winning vocal quartet everyone knows.

An Evening with Todd RundgrenPresented by

Wednesday, December 23 / Sunoco Performance Theater, 7:30pm

A Wizard, A True Star. The title of Todd Rundgren’s 1973 solo album aptly sums up the contributions of this multi-faceted artist to state-of-the-art music. As a songwriter, video pioneer, producer, recording artist, computer software developer, conceptualist, and interactive artist (re-designated TR-i), Rundgren has made a lasting impact on both the form and content of popular music.

Wizards of Winter Presented by

Tuesday, December 29 / The Forum, 8pm

Featuring some of the mid-Atlantic’s finest rock and progressive musicians, The Wizards of Winter reprise a few of the greatest hits of the Trans- Siberian Orchestra’s Christmas and Classical catalog. During 2014 the band released their own album based on original

Christmas material in a similar yet unique style. The Wizards original music comprises the major portion of their live performances as part of their holiday rock opera, “Tales Beneath a Northern Star.”

WOW will bring their musical intensity, stage theatrics and holiday fun to venues across the nation again this year. This 12 member ensemble boasts soaring vocal harmonies, precision string instrumentation, powerful percussion and stunning keyboard work, layered around a rich storyboard that evokes December’s past!

A new era of unprecedented deep space explorationJourney To Space 3D OPENS JANUARY 30, 2016

NASA’s next era will be its greatest yet. That is the clear “roadmap” painted by Journey To Space 3D. The film absolutely annihilates the perception that the space program died with the end of the Space Shuttle Program by showcasing the exciting plans NASA and the space community are working on, and the challenges they must overcome to carry out audacious missions such as landing astronauts on Mars and capturing asteroids.

By using extensive interviews with astronauts Chris Ferguson (Commander of the final shuttle mission) and Serena Aunon (a new astronaut chosen for future flights), as well as a brilliant narration by film and television legend Sir Patrick Stewart, Journey To Space 3D gives a sweeping overview of past space accomplishments, current activities and future plans.

A Tribute to Courage, Competence and Commitment D-Day Normandy 1944 3D

Sponsored by

June 6, 1944: The largest Allied operation of World War II began in Normandy, France. Yet, few know in detail exactly why and how, from the end of 1943 through August 1944, this region became the most important location in the world. Blending multiple cinematographic techniques, including animation, CGI and stunning live-action images in 3D, D-Day Normandy 1944 3D brings this monumental event to the world’s largest

screens for the first time ever. Audiences of all ages, including new generations, will discover from a new perspective how this landing changed the world. Exploring history, military strategy, science, technology and human values, the film will educate and appeal to all. Narrated by Tom Brokaw, D-Day Normandy 1944 3D pays tribute to those who gave their lives for our freedom... A duty of memory, a duty of gratitude.

Fall in Love with the Iconic Gentle GiantsPandas: The Journey Home 3D

The giant panda is one of the rarest species on our planet. Shy, elusive and gentle creatures, they once ranged in great numbers between Beijing and the Himalayas. After centuries of human expansion and destruction of their habitat, the giant pandas are on the brink of extinction, with fewer than 1,600 remaining. Pandas: The Journey Home, a groundbreaking natural-history film, captures for the first time in 3D the highly endangered giant pandas living in Wolong National Nature Reserve in the People’s Republic of China.

Terwilliger and narrated by actor and pilot Harrison Ford, the film features an original score by Academy Award®-winning composer and pilot James Horner (Avatar and Titanic). The film was shot in 95 locations around the globe, from remote places like the South Pole and the Maldives to historically significant sites of ancient civilizations. The narrative weaves together the profound ways that aviation has transformed our lives, connecting countries and cultures while expanding horizons and minds.

Take a Journey WestLewis & Clark: Great Journey West

Following the enormous success of Mysteries Of Egypt, National Geographic now presents Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West. Destination Cinema, Inc. is proud to offer this large-format film depicting one of the most compelling and heroic adventure stories in history. The film chronicles a group of explorers - the Corps of Discovery - led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark into uncharted territory

to find a water passageway to the Pacific Ocean and describe for science the wonders of the West. The expedition encountered and conquered an endless series of physical challenges as they traveled through raging rivers, buffalo-filled prairies, sub-zero temperatures and rugged mountains on their 8,000 mile journey to the Pacific Ocean and back.

Discover the Heart of the WorldJerusalem 3D

Jerusalem takes audiences on an inspiring and eye-opening tour of one of the world’s oldest and most enigmatic cities. Destroyed and rebuilt countless times over 5,000 years, Jerusalem’s enduring appeal remains a mystery. What made it so important to so many different cultures? How did it become the center of the world for three major religions? Why does it still matter to us?

Jerusalem attempts to answer these questions by following three young Jerusalemites and their families – Jewish, Christian and Muslim. Through their eyes, audiences will learn what it means to call Jerusalem home and experience celebrations and events that mark the high points of a year in the life of the city.

Art on the Curved Wall GalleryY Art High School Student ExhibitionNow through October 30

Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is celebrating the next generation of artists by holding our second annual Youth Juried Art Show, Y Art. This is a unique opportunity

for high school artists to have their work evaluated by a jury of art professionals and possibly displayed in a prominent art gallery in Harrisburg. The selected works are on display in Whitaker Center’s Curved Wall Gallery through Friday, October 30.

As We See OurselvesNovember 6 through January 8, 2016

“AS WE SEE OURSELVES” is an exhibition of portraits of artists, by artists. Many of the portraits are oil on canvas, panel or organic material such as wood, while others are mixed-media. Doing a self-portrait is an exercise in courage for an artist, in that he or she is creating an image of inner being for the entire world to view. This eclectic collection of portraits is a vibrant look into an artist’s soul.

Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is pleased to announce the new Universal Media Oasis located in the Select Medical Digital Cinema lobby. The Universal Media Oasis is in recognition of a leadership gift from Universal Media for our Digital Cinema Projector Campaign. Their contribution helped Whitaker Center join the digital revolution that has been transforming movie theaters over the past five years.

“The Whitaker Center partnership reinforces the sustained commitment Universal Media has made to the community for over thirty years. It is with pride and humility that we strengthen our legacy in combination with Whitaker Center for years to come,” said Anne Carnathan COO for Universal Media.

The new Select Medical Digital Cinema provides the premier movie going experience in Central Pennsylvania and supports Whitaker Center’s reputation for quality, generates important revenue and adds value to the visitor experience.

Whitaker Center Unveils Public SculptureWhitaker Center for Science and the Arts continues to celebrate our 15 Year Anniversary with a gift of public art to the community. Since 1999, Whitaker Center has been a cultural hub for Harrisburg and a catalyst for downtown development and investment. In celebration of Whitaker Center’s commitment to investing in the downtown community, Drs. Michael and Madlyn Hanes have donated the funds to purchase the sculpture “Wherever You Go, There You Are” by artist Kevin Caron for Whitaker Center and the community. The sculpture was unveiled on July 30th and is located on Market Street right in front of Whitaker Center.

As President and CEO of Whitaker Center, Dr. Hanes is proud to be contributing to a vibrant, cutting-edge downtown community and encourages other individuals and businesses to do the same.

Advancing Performing Arts ChallengeAdvancing Performing Arts Challenge (APAC) is one of Whitaker Center’s educational endowments. We continue to see a decrease in funds for arts education in our schools limiting students’ experiences and emotional and intellectual stimulation. For our children, access to the arts is an integral part of a well-rounded education. Whitaker Center, along with our three Resident Companies, has the opportunity to make performances such as classical ballet, theater and chamber music available to all citizens of Central Pennsylvania, especially our children. The performing arts endowment will be used to support arts education programming including residencies, master classes and workshops.

Through the wonderful generosity of the Lois Lehrman Grass Foundation, Whitaker Center has been challenged to match, dollar for dollar, the donor’s gift of $1 million. This unique opportunity to raise a $2 million special endowment will ensure the continued success and sustainability of Whitaker Center’s performing arts programs.

Our goal is to make the performing arts and culture available to all of the citizens of Central Pennsylvania, especially our children.
