Celebrating and Continuing Our Mission In September, Whitaker Center will reach another milestone. We will celebrate the 14th anniversary of our grand opening, which took place on on September 9, 1999!
Since 1999, Whitaker Center has been driven by its mission to serve as the center for scientific, artistic, cultural and educational activities to enhance the region’s quality of life and economic vitality.
To that end, we have welcomed over 4 million visitors, including 1.7 million children and adults, who have been immersed by beauty and amazement of films in Select Medical IMAX® Theater.
Harsco Science Center has introduced 1.3 million community members, including 480,000 children in school groups, to the wonders of science. In the last year alone, approximately 1,250 teachers and other youth group leaders have decided to bring their students to Whitaker Center to interact with our Science Center’s innovative hands-on exhibits.
In the performing arts, one million patrons have experienced a diverse array of live talent in our world-class performance space, Sunoco Performance Theater.
Countless numbers of visitors stroll through the Center’s public spaces on a daily basis to explore visual art exhibitions through Art on the Curved Wall. Whitaker Center has hosted more than 80 art exhibitions, and the number of artists who have displayed their work at Whitaker Center now reaches into the hundreds.
There is no doubt that Whitaker Center has served proudly as the center for scientific, artistic, cultural and educational activities in the region. The Center’s contribution to economic vitality is estimated to be more than $280 million. Our success with enhancing the quality of life in the region is conveyed best through the smiles and laughter of thousands of children and adults. They have not only been amazed by live performances in Sunoco Theater, but have also become engaged by the creative exhibits in Harsco Science Center.
We look forward with anticipation to the 15th year of service to the community. We invite you to become an important part of the continuing success story by participating in the wide array of events, activities and exhibitions at Whitaker Center.

Hot Tuna Electric
Friday, July 26 | Sunoco Performance Theater, 8pm
Rock and Roll Hall alumnus, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady have been performing together for the past 50 years. After creating the soundtrack of the ‘60s and originating from The Triumphs and Jefferson Airplane, the duo formed the iconic blues-roots band Hot Tuna.
Since their inception, the group has created more than two dozen releases in all, not counting solo efforts, side projects and collaborations with other bands. Rolling Stone has named Jorma one of the top guitarists of all-time, while Jack is considered one of today’s most innovative electric bass players, having performed with Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead.
For the last few years, the duo has been joined in most of their performances by the mandolin virtuoso Barry Mitterhoff; a veteran of bluegrass, Celtic, folk, and rock-influenced bands. The newest member of Hot Tuna is the brilliant and young drummer Skoota Warner, who joined Hot Tuna in 2009. Through two decades of acoustic and electric concerts, the band released As Steady As She Goes (2011), their first studio album in 20 years.

Serbian blues guitar sensation Ana Popović has been playing the guitar since the age of 15. Her band Hush released their debut album, Hometown in 1998. She quickly became a fixture on the Dutch blues scene and soon ventured into neighboring Germany.
In 1999, Popović formed the Ana Popović Band in Amsterdam. The following year she appeared alongside Taj Mahal, Buddy Miles,
among others on the Jimi Hendrix tribute album, Blue Haze: Songs of Jimi Hendrix. In 2001, she released her solo debut, Hush! Her follow-up album Comfort to the Soul featured a fusion of blues, rock, soul and jazz. In 2005, Popović released the live album and DVD Ana!; recorded during a performance in Amsterdam.
In 2007 Popović released Still Making History through the American record label Eclecto Groove Records. Both Still Making History and Unconditional (2011) earned a No. 1 spot on the U.S. Billboard Blues Chart. Popović’s ninth full-length album, Can You Stand the Heat, is her latest release.

Farm to Talbot’s Table: Sam Talbot of Bravo’s Top Chef Presented by Capital BlueCross & PinnacleHealth System

Known as a semi-finalist and “Fan Favorite” on season two of Bravo’s acclaimed series, Top Chef, Sam Tabolt is also an author, television personality, and host of AOL’s GMC Trade Secrets online show. As the former founding Executive Chef of the Surf Lodge in Montauk, NY and Imperial No. Nine in the Mondrian Soho Hotel in New York City, Talbot’s inventive dishes have garnered praise from The New York Times, New York Magazine, the Daily News, the New York Post, and Forbes Magazine, among others.
Diagnosed at age 12 with Type 1 diabetes, Talbot now works closely with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, who have partnered with him on his diabetes awareness foundation, The Sweet Life Kitchen. Unique even among celebrity chefs – Talbot brings his deep
love of nature, keen sense of taste, creative mind, and the intrinsic understanding of the relationship between food and health – into his kitchen. Heartfelt, entertaining, and backed by real-life experience and solid medical expertise, Talbot’s The Sweet Life: Diabetes without Boundaries, gives readers hope, inspiration, and the proof they need to realize that life with diabetes isn’t about diabetes: It’s about living.
Arturo Sandoval

Since he began studying classical trumpet at the age 12, Sandoval has become a world-renowned performer. A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, and has been seen by millions at the Academy® Awards performing with Celine Dion, at the Grammy® Awards with Justin Timberlake, and in his own right, as a leader. Sandoval has also performed at the Billboard Awards with Alicia Keys.
In addition to his multiple Grammy® Awards, he has also received six Billboard Awards and an Emmy® Award for his composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, For Love or Country, starring Andy Garcia. His two latest Grammy® Award-winning albums, Dear Diz (Every Day I think of You) and Tango Como Yo Te Siento, are now available worldwide. Soon to be released, is a new book chronicling his relationship with Dizzy Gillespie entitled, The Man Who Saved Me.

Gary St. Hilaire Honored as Father of the Year
Since 1999, The American Diabetes Association has partnered with the National Father’s Day Council to recognize numerous men from across the nation for the outstanding strength, commitment and love they exhibit as fathers. These men have not only attained success in their chosen field or endeavor, but have carved out time to teach and mature their children, while becoming good citizens and proud members of the community.
Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts congratulates Gary St. Hilaire on being an American Diabetes Association Father of the Year Honoree for 2013. Whitaker Center is fortunate to have Mr. St. Hilaire’s leadership as Chair of the Board of Directors.

Each year, aspiring local scientists, mathematicians and engineers of grades seven through 12, exhibit their projects in one of 15 categories at Whitaker Center. After a two day competition, a junior high student is chosen as Junior Grand Champion and senior high students are chosen as Senior Grand Champions, to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
At the 2013 ISEF in Phoenix, AZ, two local seniors made Capital Science and Engineering Fair history, earning Grand Champion Award titles. Palmyra Area High School senior Hannah Wastyk was named one of two first place finishers in the Cellular and Molecular Biology category. She was also one of two students to win the Dudley Herschbach Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar (SIYSS) trip to Stockholm, Sweden.
Susquenita High School senior Brad Sloop was named one of two students to earn First Place Awards in the Energy and Transportation category. He also was one of only 37 students worldwide, who earned First Place in his category.
Congratulations to Hannah and Brad for their outstanding hard work, dedication and accomplishments!

Journey back in time, millions of years ago, and experience stomping, roaring, robotic dinosaurs in the summer limited engagement exhibition, Dino Adventure. Located inside Gloria M. Olewine Gallery of Harsco Science Center, guests will tremble at a growling T-Rex, witness a Corythosaurus mother tend her brood, and discover a nestful of eggs ready to hatch.
Dino Adventure features interactive, life-sized dinosaur robots that roar, feed, fight, and care for their young. “People of all ages are fascinated by dinosaurs,” said Steve Bishop, Vice President of Science and IMAX® Programs. “This interactive exhibit and IMAX film bring these amazing creatures to life and let us explore their world like never before.”
Dino Adventure showcases popular and favorite dinosaurs among children (and adults!), including the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, the web-winged Pteranodon, and two marine reptiles: Mosasaurus and a long-necked Elasmosaurus. Dino Adventure also includes four highly interactive Be the Dinosaur simulator pods, where guests become an actual living, breathing dino within a virtual Cretaceous ecosystem. Younger guests will enjoy uncovering dinosaur bones at the Dino Dig exhibit area. Dino Adventure is included in regular Science Center admission.

From the exotic, trackless expanses and sand dunes of Mongolia’s Gobi Desert to the dramatic sandstone buttes of New Mexico, the film follows American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) paleontologists as they explore some of the greatest dinosaur finds in history. Through the magic of scientifically accurate computer-generated animation, these newly discovered creatures, and some familiar favorites, will come alive…in a big way! Hundreds of Butterflies. Thousands of Smiles. Hershey Gardens’ Butterfly House – Now Open
Flutter by Hershey Gardens’ Butterfly House this summer! You’ll be welcomed by 350 butterflies representing 25 varieties. Now in its 16th season, the outdoor house features nectar plants for food, as well as host plants for egg-laying and caterpillar-feeding. Discover the entire lifecycle of the butterfly, including the popular chrysalis box, which holds more than 100 emerging butterflies.
This summer brings a newcomer to the Butterfly House: the Red-spotted Purple butterfly. “We’ve had it a few times in the past and everyone loves it,” said John Fortino, Butterfly House coordinator. “It has a wing span of three to four inches and resembles a miniature swallowtail, but without the tail.” The upper side of the wing is black with blue spots in the margins, and red spots in the forewing and hindwing. It also has a few white spots near the top of the forewing.
“It winters over as a caterpillar,” said Fortino. “They wrap themselves in a leaf called a ‘hibernaculum’ for the winter, emerge in the spring as a caterpillar, and then go through the stages to become a butterfly.”
The Red-spotted Purple can be seen throughout most of the eastern U.S. and into Canada. “It typically lives in open woodlands and along forest edges,” said Fortino.
The Butterfly House will also be showing off a new chrysalis box and a newly expanded pond with an enhanced water feature. The Butterfly House is open daily from 9am to 5pm, now through September 15 and is included with general Gardens admission. On April 26th, the Emeritus Directors of Whitaker Center honored Miles Gibbons, Jr. with a dinner on the stage of Sunoco Performance Theater. Miles Gibbons has played a crucial role in the formation of Whitaker Center as the administrator of The Whitaker Foundation and the Helen F. Whitaker Fund. Mr. Gibbons also worked with Uncas A. Whitaker at AMP, and later was Mr. Whitaker’s personal attorney. The Emeritus Directors felt it appropriate to honor Mr. Gibbons with a dinner and an award presentation to thank him for his many years of service and dedication to the mission of Whitaker Center. It was an evening of both celebration of the past 14 years and expectation of the years to come.

AMP Grand Lobby was overflowing with the Wines of Chile and a lavish spread of hors d’oeuvres. Guests then made their way into Sunoco Performance Theater to enjoy the doo-wop sounds of Jimmy Beaumont & the Skyliners, The Marcels, and Pure Gold. The musicians had the audience practically dancing in the aisles by the end of the evening! After the concert, the three musical groups joined guests for a Dessert “Meet and Greet” in AMP Grand Lobby. It was a very good evening of good wine, good food, and good music!

■���Whitaker Center presented live performances by Irish Rovers, George Winston, Cowboy Junkies, Garrison Keillor, Jason Bishop, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, BoDeans, and many other renowned performers.
■���The Volunteer and Intern Program received 12 new volunteers and 7 new interns during fiscal year 2012. Nearly 140 volunteers and interns contributed more than 9,000 hours of time as ushers, Information Desk aids, administrative support, Science Center helpers, and more.
■���Très Bonne Année celebrated its 12th anniversary this past October. Guests enjoyed three evenings of wine-themed events with Wines of Chile, raising money in support of Whitaker Center.
■���Select Medical IMAX® Theater presented IMAX films such as Tornado Alley 3D and Adrenaline Rush: The Science of Risk, and Hollywood IMAX films, Happy Feet Two and The Dark Knight Rises.
■���Guests to Harsco Science Center had the opportunity to explore Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion, a limited engagement exhibition sponsored by both M&T Bank and Country Meadows, from May 26 through September 29, 2012.
■���Corporate gifts to Whitaker Center’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit program totaled $274,805.
■���Whitaker Center held a successful staff and volunteer campaign, Unite for Uncas, raising $9,610 to purchase energy-efficient LED lighting for the lower level galleries in Harsco Science Center.
■���In February 2012, the Backstage Studio exhibit opened in Harsco Science Center. The exhibition was funded by The Alexander Grass Foundation.
■���Project staff promoted Expedition Chesapeake at state science teacher conferences in MD, NY, PA, VA and WV, and enlisted an additional 350 teachers for review and testing of the project’s educational materials.

IMAX® movies and live theater performances will be held on Mondays as scheduled. Tickets for Monday IMAX movies may be purchased at the Concession counter, inside the IMAX lobby. The Box Office opens one hour prior to live theater performances.
