Soaked grounds followed by freezing temperatures delayed the construction process further, but with the assistance of Better Electric, Sterling Redi Mix, Industrial Welding, and a few SHS football players it was completed this past spring. They would also like to thank the following sponsors, in joining with them, for their generous contributions to the Sterling High School Video Scoreboard & supporting student athletes! Sports By Ken McDowell Sports Editor FLEMING Coach Derek Herbert describes the 2014 volleyball season “Promising” for the Fleming Lady Wildcats. That may be an understatement after the Lady Wildcats captured their fourth Class 1A state volleyball title last November by defeating their Logan County rivals, the Caliche Lady Buffaloes, in 4 games in the title match. Fleming graduated only one senior from last year, and returns five starters from that state championship squad. Fleming boasts eight seniors this year, including Megan Chintala, Rachel Frantz, Timmi Keisel, Deb Kurtzer, Sabrina Lousberg, Elayna Muller, Emily Muller and Saige Herbert. “We have been very fortune and we had a great summer,” Coach Herbert said. “We have all of our starters back except for one, so it’s very promising. “Everyone is improved and we have some young kids who have stepped up so we’re pretty excited going into the season.” Juniors for the Lady Wildcats are Justice Bretz, Emily Lovell, Shelbe Schure and Jessica Stone. Sophomores are Shaylee Johnson, Lauryn Muller, Kalyn Serrato, Jessica Sigmon and Jessica Williams. Freshmen include Hannah Blom, Bailey Chintala, Morgan Cockroft, Alli Keisel, Tori Smay and Lauren Whittington. Last year Fleming posted a 27-3 mark after appearing in a state championship match for the seventh time in the last eight years. Leading the way are three players who received All-State honors last year, including Timmi Keisel, a middle hitter and Class 1A Player of the Year, Megan Chintala, the libero and Frantz as the setter. Kurtzer was Second Team All-State as an outside hitter and Elayna Muller returns as a defensive specialist. Bretz started on the right side, and has recovered from a shoulder injury. Saige Herbert sat out the entire season last year with an injury, and will give the Lady Wildcats even more firepower at the net this season. During the summer, Saige Herbert, Johnson, Serrato, Bailey Chintala and Alli Keisel rotated into the varsity lineup, according to the Fleming coach. “We also have some other seniors who can make some noise,” he added. The Lady Wildcats are also defending North Central Conference champs and have owned that league for nearly a decade. Chasing the Lady Wildcats this year in the conference are Peetz, Weldon Valley, Prairie, Briggsdale and Pawnee. “Weldon Valley is great this year,” Coach Herbert said. “They had a lot of sophomores last year and finished third in our district, so they will be really tough. The rest of the other teams have a lot of talent. “The North Central Conference and our district are really tough. This year Heritage Christian drops into our district from Class 2A and they will bring a unique challenge. So everyday will be a real battle for us in the conference, district and state.” Fleming has been able to enjoy success over the last decade due to outstanding athletes, parents and a deep junior high program, according to Coach Herbert. “We do really have good coaches who coach the young kids,” he pointed out. “Lisa Chintala does a good job coaching our young kids Senior this year hoping to lead Fleming to another state title are (front row left to right) Saige Herbert, Rachel Frantz, Deb Kurtzer, Timmi Keisel and (back row left to right) Megan Chintala, Emily Muller, Elayna Muller and Sabrina Lousberg. (SPS Photo By Ken McDowell.) Fleming returns solid nucleus from state championship squad and Christy Stumpf has coached our junior high girls for years. “They have done a tremendous job and our junior high teams have won the league six or seven out of the last nine years. When the girls get into high school we are not teaching them from the beginning. They are very skilled and they know how to compete and win, so that makes a big difference.” Though the expectations are always high each and every year for the Lady Wildcats, Coach Herbert likes to keep those goals and expectations in simple terms. “Our girls have perfect attitudes in practice and they always focus on getting better,” Coach Herbert observed. “We set up short term goals on what we want to do every day and if we take care of those first the long term goals will take care of themselves. “If we are fortunate enough to make it to state, and if we don’t win it, then we have still had a great year. I like our team a lot and I like how we have handled our success. The only thing we can control is on a day-to-day basis what we do in the gym and hopefully the rest will take care of itself.”
