Softball: The Lady Tiger softball team, coached by Bob Knudson, will hold its first practice at 4 p.m. on Aug. 12 at Mason Field at Pioneer Park. Sterling will open the season Sat., Aug. 17 at home against Scottsbluff, Neb., in a double- header, with the first game starting at 11 a.m. The Lady Tigers are in Class 3A and members of the Patriot League with Brush, Eaton, Fort Lupton, Lyons, Platte Valley, Strasburg and Valley. Boys Soccer: Ben Hackbarth will begin his second year as head coach of the Sterling Tiger soccer team as the squad will report to its first practice Aug. 12 from 7-8 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. at the SHS Soccer Fields. The Tigers will open the 2013 season Fri., Aug. 30 at Roosevelt. The first home match for Sterling is Tues., Sept. 10 against Liberty Common. Sterling is in Class 3A and a member of Region 4 with Valley, Community Christian, Frontier Academy, Estes Park, Fort Lupton and Eagle Ridge Academy. Cross-Country: The SHS girls and boys cross-country teams will have their first workout Aug. 12 at 9 a.m. at Tiger Alley. Cheryl Rael once again coaches the Sterling squads. Sterling will open the 2013 season Fri., Sept. 6 in the Horizon Invitational Meet. The Sterling Invitational Meet is slated for Tues., Sept. 17 at Pioneer Park. Sterling is in Class 3A and will compete in the Patriot League. Sterling will host the Patriot League Meet Sat., Oct. 5 at Pioneer Park. Caliche High School Football: Led by Coach Paul Zink, the Buffaloes will hold their first practice at 7 p.m. on Aug. 12. The first game for Caliche will be Sat., Sept. 7 at La Veta at 1 p.m. The Buffs are once again members of the Plains Conference in eight-man football. Teams in the league with Caliche are Akron, Merino, Sedgwick County, Haxtun and Dayspring Christian. Volleyball: Last year the Lady Buffs advanced to the Class 1A state championship match before falling to Weldon Valley. Coach Jeanett Lambrecht’s squad will hold its first practice on Aug. 12 at 7 a.m. The first match for Caliche will will ironically be Sat., Aug. 31 at home against Weldon Valley in a re-match of last year’s state volleyball contest. The Lady Buffs will compete in the Class 1A Lower Platte League against this year with Akron, Haxtun, Holyoke, Merino, Sedgwick County, Wiggins, Wray and Yuma. NOTE: Though basketball season is still a few months away, Caliche Athletic Director Jenny Smock announced that Derek Weingardt will be the new boys basketball coach, replacing Randy Kirkwood who resigned last spring. Weingardt is a 2009 graduate of Caliche High School where he helped guide the Buffs to the first of four straight Class 1A state titles in 2009. Weingardt was also a member of the 2008 state runner-up team and the 2007 state third place squad. Kirkwood took over as head coach of the Buffs in 2005-06, the same year Weingardt was a freshman. He guided the Buffs to four state titles in 2009, 2012, 2011 and 2012. “We are excited to that Derek is going to be the new coach,” Smock said. “Randy is a tough act to follow but I feel that Derek will do a great job. “He played his high school career for Randy so he knows the style of basketball that has made Caliche successful. He will have high expectations and will carry on the winning tradition. The kids in the program respect him and Derek has always showed great leadership on and off the court.” Merino High School Football: The Rams will open their 2013 football season Sat., Aug. 30 in Fairplay against Sargent at 3 p.m. The first home game for Coach Marlan Tramp’s Rams will be Fri., Sept. 6 against Simla in a non- league contest. The first practice for the Rams will be at 7 a.m. Aug. 12. Merino is in the Plains Conference with Akron, Caliche, Dayspring Christian, Haxtun and Sedgwick County. Volleyball: Former Lady Rams volleyball star Christin (Piel) Suter is the new volleyball coach at Merino, replacing Erin Schmidt who resigned last year. The first meet for Merino is Thurs., Aug. 29 in Colorado Springs. The Merino teams will also run in the Sterling Invitational Meet Tues., Sept. 17 at Pioneer Park. Merino competes in the Lower Platte League with Akron, Haxtun, Holyoke, Caliche, Sedgwick County, Wiggins, Wray and Yuma. Fleming High School Football: The Wildcats of Fleming are coming off back-to- back six-man state titles and have won 24 straight games. Coach John King’s defending state champs will practice at 7 a.m. on Aug. 12. The first will be Sat., Aug. 30 at home against Liberty/Stratton at 7 p.m. Fleming is also the defending champion of the North Central Conference, which includes Briggsdale, North Park, Pawnee, Peetz, Prairie and Weldon Valley.
