The McDonnell Douglas/Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft that was developed for the United States Air Force (USAF) from the 1980s to the early 1990s by McDonnell Douglas.

The C-17 commonly performs tactical and strategic airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo throughout the world; additional roles include medical evacuation and airdrop duties.

In February 2009, the United Arab Emirates Air Force agreed to purchase four C-17s.[158] In January 2010, a contract was signed for six C-17s.[159] In May 2011, the first C-17 was handed over and the last of the six was received in June 2012

Kuwait requested the purchase of one C-17 in September 2010 and a second in April 2013 through the U.S.’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program.[162] The nation ordered two C-17s; the first was delivered on 13 February 2014

Bahrain lost a statesmanTDT | Manama

Bahraini lawmakers yes-terday paid tribute to His Royal Highness Prince

Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa hailing him as a statesman with a clear and integrated political and social vision.

“Bahrain has lost a statesman with a clear and integrated po-litical and social vision,” parlia-mentarians said in a statement on the passing away of HRH Prince Khalifa.

The statement hailed HRH Prince Khalifa as a person “in-variably keen on regular com-munication and open contact with citizens.”

Parliamentarians said the achievements and legacy of Prince Khalifa would always be recalled with pride in Bahrain’s history.

“He was a father to all Bah-rainis, always asking about their families and conditions. He was also keen on meeting members of parliament and discussing them local matters and ways to enhance their role within the community,” Representative Ali Al Zayed said.

“He possessed a clear and integrated political and social vision that helped him with developing Bahrain under the leadership of HM King Hamad

bin Isa Al Khalifa, in health, eco-nomic, education, banking and other areas.”

Abdullah Al Thawadi said that Bahrain lost “a humanitarian

and leadership figure who de-voted himself to serving Bahrain for decades.”

“With him, Bahrain witnessed n u m e ro u s d eve l o p m e n t a l

achievements, and he consid-ered Bahrainis as the true assets and wealth of the country,” he said.

“HRH Prince Khalifa was keen

to serve humanity locally and globally, and he always directed ministers and officials to adopt an open-door policy with citi-zens, to look at the needs, to visit

their villages and cities, and to listen to them attentively.”

Ibrahim Al Nafie said that the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa is painful news for Bah-rainis and people of the Arabian Gulf and the world.

“His Royal Highness was keen for Bahrain to be in the top ranks of civilized countries, and this is what happened by the grace of God and HRH’s determination,” he said.

US military flew HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa to Mayo clinic in USTDT | agencies

HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa was flown into America for

hospital care by the US military two months ago, acknowledged the US State Department yes-terday.

In a report carried by the Stars and Stripes, the state Depart-ment said the care offered to Prince Khalifa came just after the military flew Kuwait’s late ruling emir to the same Mayo Clinic hospital in Minnesota.

The article said this under-lines the importance US has for the island Kingdom.

Both countries host major US military bases in the region and are considered major non-NATO allies, granting them military and economic privileges with America.

According to stripes, On Sept. 18, a US Air Force C-17 Globe-master III “flying hospital” took off from Germany and landed in Rochester, Minnesota, the home of the flagship campus of the Mayo Clinic. It was followed to Rochester by a Boeing 767 owned by Bahrain’s royal family.

The report, however, says the Mayo Clinic at the time and since has declined to comment on the care it provided to Prince Khalifa, who died Wednesday at age 84.

The Air Force uses such C-17s for medical evacuations, triag-ing critically wounded soldiers while rapidly flying them onto major bases. The aircraft include onboard oxygen and the same

lifesaving equipment found in hospital emergency rooms. The flights often include critical care air transport teams comprised of a specialised doctor, a nurse and a respiratory therapist.

The State Department ac-knowledged the C-17 flight car-ried Prince Khalifa in a state-ment Friday to The Associated Press, stripes report said.

“In September, the United States provided medical trans-portation assistance to Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Sal-man Al Khalifa, a US friend and ally,” it said.

Secretary of State Mike Pom-peo earlier offered condolences

to Bahrain over Prince Khalifa’s death.

“As the prime minister of Bahrain since its independence, Prince Khalifa was a statesman of the highest order and will always be known as a close friend and partner of the United States,” Pompeo said.

A Bahrain royal family Boe-ing 747 brought Prince Khalifa’s body home from Minnesota on Thursday.

Internet is not Wild West: EU warns Google• Google internal document outlined a 60-day strategy to counter the European Union’s push for the new rules

• Pichai apologised for the way the document came out

Reuters | Brussels

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has apologised to Europe’s industry chief

Thierry Breton over a leaked in-ternal document proposing ways to counter the EU’s tough new rules for technology companies.

Pichai and Breton exchanged views in a video-conference call late on Thursday, the third this year, according to a statement from the European Commission.

“The Internet cannot remain a

‘Wild West’: we need clear and transparent rules, a predicta-ble environment and balanced rights and obligations,” Breton told Pichai.

The call came after a Google internal document outlined a 60-day strategy to counter the European Union’s push for the new rules by getting US allies to push back against Breton.

The call was initiated by Google before the document was leaked.

Breton brought up the leaked document and showed it to Pichai during the call and said that there was no need to use old century tactics and to play one unit at the Commission against another, a person familiar with the call said.

Pichai apologised for the way the document came out, a pa-per which he had not seen nor signed off, saying that he would engage directly with Breton if he sees language and policy that specifically targets Google, an-other person familiar with the call said.

Google said the two had a frank but open conversation.

“Our online tools have been a lifeline to many people and businesses through lockdown, and Google is committed to con-tinuing to innovate and build services that can contribute to Europe’s economic recovery post-COVID,” spokesman Al Ver-ney said in a statement.

The incident underlines the intense lobbying by tech com-panies against the proposed EU rules, which could impede their businesses and force changes in how they operate.

Breton will announce new draft rules known as the Digi-tal Services Act and the Digital

Markets Act together with Euro-pean Competition Commission-er Margrethe Vestager on Dec. 2.

The rules will set out a list of do’s and don’ts for gatekeepers

- online companies with market power - forcing them to share data with rivals and regulators and not to promote their servic-es and products unfairly.

“The Internet cannot remain a ‘Wild West’: we need clear and transparent rules, a predicta-ble environment and balanced rights and obligations,” Breton told Pichai.

“Everything that is allowed offline should be authorised on-line; and everything that is for-bidden offline should be banned online,” he said.

Breton told Pichai that he would increase the EU’s pow-er to curb unfair behaviour by gatekeeping platforms, so that the Internet doesn’t just bene-fit a handful of companies but also Europe’s small- and medi-um-sized enterprises and en-trepreneurs.

“Europe’s position is clear: everyone is welcome on our con-tinent – as long as they respect our rules,” he told Pichai.

Gold steady as rising virus cases offset vaccine optimismReuters

Gold held steady in a nar-row range yesterday, with

optimism over a COVID-19 vaccine countered by market concerns about its rollout as global infections continue to mount.

Spot gold were little changed at $1,877.30 per ounce by 1132 GMT but was down 3.7 per cent for the week, heading for its worst weekly loss since Sep-tember after the initial vaccine euphoria dented safe-haven in-vestor demand.

US gold futures were up 0.2pc at $1,877.60.

“Gold has rebounded because

the pandemic and the COVID-19 numbers globally are still ris-ing. The market optimism to-wards the vaccine and risk-on sentiment has faded,” said Bank of China International analyst Xiao Fu.

“There’s only going to be a limited number of vaccines pro-duced in the next three months, even in 2021, but there could be other companies coming up with vaccines as well. There could be other factors like mutation of the virus, the need to develop a new vaccine.”

Gold slumped 4.6pc on Mon-day, its biggest daily fall since Aug. 11, after drugmaker Pfiz-

er and BioNTech SE said their COVID-19 vaccine was more than 90pc effective based on initial trial results.

US Federal Reserve chair-man Jay Powell and ECB Pres-

ident Christine Lagarde said the economy was still in for a tough time even if development of a potential vaccine was rea-son for some optimism further ahead.

European officials warned against COVID-19 complacency and said that measures to con-trol a surge in infections must continue.

The dollar index held steady but was on track for a 0.7pc weekly gain. [USD/]

“Difficult issues remain”: UK, EU will resume trade talks• The EU has urged Britain to compromise, saying its geographic proximity to the bloc means it cannot be handed a deal similar to those Brussels

Reuters | London

Britain and the European Union will resume trade talks in Brussels yester-

day after so far failing to close gaps between their positions on two of the thorniest issues that have long dogged the ne-gotiations: competition rules and fishing.

With just seven weeks before a status quo transition period ends and Britain completes its Brexit journey out of bloc, both sides have stepped up negotia-tions on a deal that would pro-tect nearly a trillion dollars of trade from possible disruption.

But after missing a mid-No-vember deadline, British offi-cials say there has been little movement on stubborn dif-ferences over fair competition rules and fisheries, with Lon-don repeatedly pushing for a

deal that would respect the country’s sovereignty.

The EU has urged Britain to compromise, saying its geo-graphic proximity to the bloc means it cannot be handed a deal similar to those Brussels have agreed with countries such as Canada. So far, despite describing some progress, nei-ther side has moved far enough to allow for any breakthrough.

“The talks are continuing in London today, there will be a pause over the weekend and then we are expecting the talks to resume in Brussels on Mon-day,” a spokesman for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told reporters on Friday.

While many deadlines have been missed in the

years of Brexit talks since Britain voted to leave in 2016, some businesses are getting increasingly

twitchy over whether the government is prepared for January without, or

even with, a deal.

Asia-Pacific closes in on world’s biggest trade dealReuters

Fifteen Asia-Pacific econ-omies are set to conclude

talks tomorrow and sign what could become the world’s largest free trade agreement, covering nearly a third of the global population and about 30 per cent of its global gross domestic product.

The Regional Comprehen-sive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which could be ap-proved at the end of a four-day ASEAN summit in Hanoi, will progressively lower tariffs and aims to counter protectionism, boost investment and allow freer movement of goods with-in the region.

A US-China trade war and US President Donald Trump’s

“America First” retreat from predecessor Barack Obama’s “pivot” towards Asia has giv-en impetus to complete RCEP, which is widely seen as Bei-jing’s chance to set the region-al trade agenda in Washing-ton’s absence.

The US election win by Democrat Joe Biden, howev-er, could challenge that, with the former vice president sig-nalling a return to stronger US multilateralism.

WHAT IS RCEP ALL ABOUT?

RCEP includes China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and the 10 members of the Association of South

East Asian Nations (ASEAN) - Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Cambo-dia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

India was involved in earlier discussions but opted out last year.

One of the deal’s biggest draws is that its members already have various bilateral or multilateral agreements in place, so RCEP builds on those foundations.

It will allow for one set of rules of origin to qualify for tariffs reduction with other RCEP members. A common set of regu-lations mean less procedures and easier movement of goods.

Trump forbids investments in cos linked to Chinese military• The order could impact some of China’s biggest companies

• The move is designed to deter US investment firms

• Starting Jan. 11, the order will prohibit purchases by US investors of the securities of those companies

• Biden is indicated to continue a tough approach to Beijing

Reuters | Washington

The Trump administration yesterday unveiled an ex-ecutive order prohibit-

ing US investments in Chinese companies that Washington says are owned or controlled by the Chinese military, ramping up pressure on Beijing after the US election.

The order could impact some of China’s biggest companies, including China Telecom Corp Ltd, China Mobile Ltd and sur-veillance equipment maker Hik-vision.

The move is designed to deter US investment firms, pension funds and others from buying shares of 31 Chinese companies that were designated by the De-

fence Department as backed by the Chinese military earlier this year.

Starting Jan. 11, the order will prohibit purchases by US inves-tors of the securities of those companies. Transactions made to divest ownership in the com-panies will be permitted until Nov. 11, 2021.

“China is increasingly ex-ploiting United States capital

to resource and to enable the development and modernisation of its military, intelligence, and other security apparatuses,” said the order released by the White House.

The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immedi-ately respond to a request for comment.

In a stock exchange filing, China Telecom said it estimat-

ed the executive order might impact the price of its shares, which closed down 7.8 per cent in Hong Kong on Friday, and American depository shares, adding that it would “closely monitor” developments.

Another telecom operator, China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd, said companies affected by the order would include its parent, China United Network Commu-

nications Group Co Ltd.China Unicom also said in its

filing, it expected an impact on its shares, which fell 6.7 per cent on Friday, and American de-pository shares, adding it was “considering appropriate steps to protect its and its investors’ lawful rights”.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro estimated that at least half a trillion dollars in market capitalisation was rep-resented by the Chinese compa-nies and their subsidiaries.

“This is a sweeping order designed to choke off Ameri-can capital to China’s milita-risation,” he told reporters on a call.

The move is the first major policy initiative by President Donald Trump since losing the Nov. 3 election to Democratic rival Joe Biden and indicates that he is seeking to take advan-tage of the waning months of his administration to crack down on China, even as he has appeared laser-focused on challenging the election result.

Thursday’s action is likely to further weigh on already fraught ties between the world’s top two economies, which are at logger-heads over China’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and its move to impose security leg-islation on Hong Kong.

Biden has not laid out a de-tailed China strategy but all the indications are that he will continue a tough approach to Beijing, with whom Trump has become increasingly con-frontational in his last year in office.

Oil falls on coronavirus surge but on track for weekly gainReuters | London

Oil prices fell yesterday, pres-sured by fears about a slow

recovery in the global econ-omy and fuel demand due to rising coronavirus infections, but hopes for a vaccine kept the market on track for a second straight weekly gain.

Brent crude LCOc1 was down 71 cents, or 1.63 per cent, at $42.82 a barrel as of 1343 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures CLc1 fell

84 cents, or 2.07pc, to $40.28 a barrel.

For the week, both were head-ed for a surge of about 9pc.

US government data also add-ed pressure, as crude inventories rose by 4.3 million barrels last week, compared with an expect-ed fall of 913,000 barrels.

“In essence, some of the feel-good factor from the Pfizer vaccine has worn off and dis-appointing EIA figures have cre-ated a bit of a downward cor-rection,” Harry Tchilinguirian,

head of commodity research at BNP Paribas, said.

“However, OPEC+ is prepared to tweak its production and we’re still waiting for the trial results of other vaccines that may be easier to distribute since they won’t need such cold stor-age.”

New coronavirus infections in the United States and else-where are at record levels and tightening restrictions to con-tain the spread have dampened the prospect of a near-term end

to the global health crisis.Hopes were high that a reso-

lution to the pandemic is on the horizon - stoking this week’s jump in WTI and Brent con-tracts - after data showed an experimental COVID-19 vaccine being developed by Pfizer Inc and Germany’s BioNTech was 90pc effective.

The International Energy Agency (IEA), however, said on Thursday that global oil demand is unlikely to get a significant boost from any roll-out of COV-ID-19 vaccines until well into 2021.

Smartphone shipments in China plunge 27pc in OctoberReuters | Shanghai

Smartphone shipments in China plunged 27 per

cent in October compared with the same month last year, government data re-leased on Friday showed.

The numbers suggest that handset demand is weak despite China’s recovery from the novel coronavirus and that Apple Inc and its local rivals, such as Hua-wei Technologies Co Ltd, will compete in a shrinking market.

Phone makers shipped 25 million handsets in October compared with 34.6 million a year earlier, according to the China Academy of In-formation and Communica-tions Technology (CAICT), a state-backed think-tank.

That follows an annual 36% decline in September, to 22 million compared with 34.7 million in September 2019.

Data from third-party re-search firms revealed that Apple and Huawei both saw shipments decline year-on-year in Q3 2020.

Both companies released new flagship handsets in October.

Fauci not advising Biden, sees no reason to quit Trump nowReuters | Washington

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease ex-

pert, said he has had no con-tact with President-elect Joe Biden’s coronavirus transition team and sees no reason to quit to join that effort when there is so much to do now to fight the surging pandemic.

“I stay in my lane. I’m not a politician. I do public health things,” he said in an interview ahead of next week’s Reuters Total Health conference.

Since January, Fauci has served on President Donald Trump’s White House Coro-navirus Task Force, a position that has frequently put him at odds with the president, who has sought to down-play the pandemic and fo-cused instead on opening the economy.

“There’s absolutely no reason and no sense at all for me to stop doing something in the middle of a pandemic that is playing a major role in helping us get out of the pandemic,” Fauci said.

His advice for the presi-dent-elect, he said, is “exactly the same” as what he is recom-mending now - social distanc-ing, avoiding crowds, wearing masks, washing hands. “Public health principles don’t change from one month to another or from one administration to an-other.”

Fauci has served six admin-istrations and came to prom-inence fighting the AIDS epi-demic in the 1980s under Pres-ident Ronald Reagan.

Figures as of closing

News in brief u Indian and Pakistani forces waged their biggest artillery battle in several

months leaving more than 10 dead and dozens wounded either side, officials said. At least five separate clashes -- involving shelling and gunfire -- were reported along the 740-kilometre (460-mile) ceasefire line that has separated the nuclear-armed rivals for the past seven decades, officials from the two sides said. Hundreds of villagers were moved away from

the so-called Line of Control (LoC) in Indian-controlled territory, while Pakistani officials said dozens of homes were set ablaze by Indian shelling on their side

u At least seven people died in North Carolina as flash floods swept through parts of the state, authorities said, adding at least two people were missing. In the state’s Alexander County emergency responders found three bodies and evacuated more than 30 people from a campground, emergency services said.

u Aung San Suu Kyi’s ruling party secured an absolute

majority in Myanmar’s election, official results showed yesterday, in a poll disputed by the military-aligned opposition and criticised by rights groups. Her National League for Democracy (NLD) had already declared a landslide victory based on its own tallies, prompting street celebrations by supporters..

u A consortium of Chinese companies signed a contract with the government of Brazil’s Bahia state to build a 12-kilometer (7.5-mile) bridge across the entrance of the bay opposite the city of Salvador. The bridge to the island of Itaparica, slated to be the longest over water in Latin America, will take five years to build and cost 6.7 billion reais ($1.2 billion), Bahia officials said.

u Peruvians protesting the abrupt ouster of president Martin Vizcarra

clashed on the streets of Lima night with riot police, who fired tear gas to disperse the crowds. The clashes, and other more peaceful protests in the capital and other cities, are piling pressure on a fragmented Congress and the new government of Manuel Merino.

White House planning for second Trump term despite defeat: officialAFP | Washington

The White House is plan-ning for President Donald

Trump to serve a second term despite his reelection loss, a top official said yesterday.

“We are moving forward here at the White House under the assumption that there will be a second Trump term,” the out-

going president’s trade advisor Peter Navarro said on Fox Busi-ness Network.

Trump has yet to concede nearly a week after US media announced that his Democratic challenger Joe Biden had de-feated him in the November 3 presidential election.

The president has made few public appearances since then

and launched legal challenges in several states, alleging election fraud, but without providing any proof.

“What we seek here is verifi-able ballots, certifiable ballots and an investigation into what are growing numbers of alle-gations of fraud under signed affidavits by witnesses,” Navarro said.

Philippines typhoon death toll rises as clean up beginsPhilippines hunts for missing after its deadliest typhoon this year

• Police say 42 people have been confirmed dead with dozens still missing after Vamco triggered floods and landslides

Reuters | Manila

Philippine police and sol-diers joined a search yes-terday for missing people

after Typhoon Vamco killed at least 42 people, as residents returned to devastated homes following the worst flooding in years in Manila and nearby provinces.

Vamco, the 21st and most deadly cyclone to hit the coun-try this year, tore through the main island of Luzon late on Wednesday and early Thursday, just as the country was reeling from Goni, the world’s strongest typhoon of 2020, which killed 25 people and flattened thou-sands of homes.

Tens of thousands of homes were engulfed by the floods and as the water receded in areas such as Marikina, a suburb east

of Manila, homes covered in de-bris and caked in mud emerged.

“All the houses here were submerged in mud and in wa-ter,” said,” Mike Rusio, 51, told Reuters as he scooped buckets full of mud from his two-storey home.

Heavy equipment was also be-ing brought in to clear furniture, trash and cars blocking roads.

Data published by the police showed that 42 people had died, 43 were injured and 20 were still missing.

Successive typhoons - eight in the past two months - add to

the challenges on a government battling community coronavi-rus infections and an economic recession.

Among the casualties, five died and six more people were missing in a landslide in Banaue town. Three people died when a warehouse collapsed in Cavite province.

A landslide near a gold mine killed 10 people in Nueva Viz-caya province north of Manila, police chief Ranser Evasco told DZBB radio. In Cagayan prov-ince, four died in a landslide and two drowned, said Governor

Manuel Mamba.The disaster agency said

nearly 75,000 people were still packed into evacuation centres, some without proper separa-tion between families and many evacuees not wearing masks.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque said makeshift shelters increased the risk of COVID-19 transmission, alongside lepto-spirosis and diarrhoea.

The Philippines has the sec-ond-highest number of COV-ID-19 infections and casualties in Southeast Asia behind In-donesia.

After Vamco, up to three more typhoons are expected to lash the Philippines before the end of December, the state weather forecaster warned.

China finds coronavirus on packaging of Brazilian beefReuters | Beijing

The Chinese city of Wuhan said yesterday

it had detected the novel coronavirus on the packag-ing of a batch of Brazilian beef, as it ramped up testing of frozen foods this week as part of a nationwide cam-paign.

The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission said in a statement on its website it had found three positive samples on the outer pack-aging of frozen, boneless beef from Brazil.

The beef had entered the country at Qingdao port on Aug. 7 and it reached Wu-han on Aug. 17, where it remained in a cold storage facility until recently.

The novel coronavirus first emerged in the central Chinese city late last year, at a market, and has gone on to spread around the world.

More than 100 staff at the Wuhan facility had under-gone tests, it said, and 200 environmental samples had been taken.

Refugee exodus to Sudan swells as war crimes feared in Ethiopia’s TigrayReuters | Addis Ababa

The United Nations voiced concern yes-

terday that the conflict be-tween Ethiopian govern-ment forces and insurgent northern leaders could spi-ral out of control and said war crimes may already have been committed.

On the Sudanese bor-der, refugees who had fled the combat zone in Tigray region told of buildings wrecked by government air raids, shootings in the street and killings by machete.

The 10-day-old war has already killed hundreds, pushed thousands of civil-ians into Sudan, and raised fears it may draw in Eritrea or pressure Ethiopia’s com-mitment to an African force opposing al Qaeda-linked militants in Somalia.

It may also blemish the reputation of Prime Minis-ter Abiy Ahmed, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for a 2018 peace pact with Eritrea and had won plaudits for open-ing Ethiopia’s economy and easing a repressive political system.

Spanish mountaineer, 81, trains for Himalayas in tribute to victims of COVID-19Reuters | Madrid

At 81 years old Spanish mountaineer Carlos Soria

is training to tackle one of the world’s highest peaks, a chal-lenge he will dedicate to el-derly victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“To all those who have disap-peared because of this terrible pandemic, this terrible crisis, I want as an elderly person to dedicate it to them,” Soria said outside his home in the Sierra Guadarrama mountains, north of Madrid.

Travel restrictions permit-ting, Soria hopes to go to Ne-pal in the spring to take on the 8,167-metre Dhaulagiri climb.

After conquering 12 of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks, Soria wants to complete the list with Dhaulagiri and Ti-bet’s Shishapangma to be-come the oldest climber to summit the planet’s 14 highest peaks.

He had aimed to do so earli-er this year, but the pandemic thrust much of the world into lockdown and put his plans on ice.

Undeterred, he made the most of being stuck at home by sleeping in a hypobaric chamber that replicates the at-

mospheric conditions of life at 5,000 metres above sea level.

Soria keeps his skills sharp by running miles through the steep foothills and using ice axes to

scale a rudimentary climbing wall in his conservatory.

“With all this mess going on in the world, being locked up here wasn’t the worst thing that could happen,” Soria said dur-ing a break from training.

“I’m a veteran climber, a very veteran climber,” he laughs, re-calling some of the trips that have taken him to remote rang-es on all continents.

“Now I’m a bit older I think it’s a beautiful idea to show peo-ple of a certain age that they shouldn’t abandon things just because of their age.”

Italy’s PM reassures kids that Santa won’t be locked downAFP | Milan

Father Christmas wears a mask and can travel the

world thanks to a special per-mit, Italy’s prime minister said to ease children’s fears that Santa may also be under lock-down this year.

“Father Christmas assured me that he already has an in-ternational travel certificate: he can travel everywhere and distribute gifts to all the world’s children,” Giuseppe Conte wrote on Facebook.

He was responding to a des-perate letter by five-year-old Tommaso who had pleaded with him not to confine “Bab-bo Natale,” as Santa is known in Italy.

“He confirmed to me that he

always uses a mask and main-tains a correct distance to pro-tect himself and everyone he meets,” Conte said.

He then suggested to the boy that he put a bottle of hand sanitising gel under the tree, along with warm milk and bis-cuits.

“I’m letting you know that it won’t be necessary to tell Fa-ther Christmas that you were good in your letter, because I already told him,” the Italian PM continued.

“I also found out that you wanted to ask Father Christ-mas to chase away the coro-navirus. Don’t forget to ask for another present,” he con-cluded.

US election officials say ‘no evidence’ of compromised votesPresident Donald Trump and his Republican party allege that voting fraud and lost ballots led to his loss to Joe Biden in last week’s election

• Biden wins Arizona, cementing US election lead

Reuters | Washington

There is no evidence of compromised ballots or corrupt voting systems

in the US election, officials said, as a top Democrat accused Re-publicans who refuse to accept President-elect Joe Biden’s win of “poisoning” democracy.

Their messages came hours after President Donald Trump once again cried foul, retweet-ing a baseless claim that an election equipment maker “de-leted” 2.7 million votes for him nationwide.

Biden, who leads by more than five million in the popular vote, cemented his victory late Thursday by winning Arizona, US networks said, flipping the state Democratic for the first time since 1996.

Arizona gives Biden a 290-217 lead over Trump in the Electoral College, with 270 needed to win the White House.

With most Republican law-makers having yet to acknowl-edge Biden’s win, Senate Mi-nority Leader Chuck Schumer, the chamber’s top Democrat, accused them of “denying reali-ty” and “auditioning for profiles in cowardice.”

“Instead of working to pull the country back together so that we can fight our common enemy Covid-19, Republicans

in Congress are spreading con-spiracy theories, denying reality and poisoning the well of our democracy,” he said.

Senior US federal and state election officials meanwhile in a statement rejected Trump’s claims of fraud, saying that “the November 3rd election was the most secure in American his-tory.”

The statement was issued by the Election Infrastructure Gov-ernment Coordinating Coun-cil, a public-private umbrella group under the primary federal election security body, the Cy-bersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

“There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised,” they said.

“While we know there are many unfounded claims and opportunities for misinforma-tion about the process of our

elections, we can assure you we have the utmost confidence in the security and integrity of our elections, and you should too,” the statement said.

It was signed by the heads of the National Association of State Election Directors and the National Association of Sec-retaries of State -- the officials who manage elections at the state level -- and by the chair-man of the US Election Assis-tance Commission.

‘Absurd circus’ The statement came just

hours after Trump’s retweet, which in addition to claiming 2.7 million “deleted” votes also said hundreds of thousand had been switched from him to Bid-en in Pennsylvania and other states.

It was the latest in a series of bogus assertions Trump and Republicans have put forth in order to reject Biden’s victory.

Republican lawmakers such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have stood firm with Trump by supporting his refusal to concede and back-ing his legal challenges.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi weighed in Thurs-day to demand Republicans stop what she called an “absurd cir-cus” and turn to combatting the pandemic.

“Now that the people have expressed their views, Joe Bid-en has won (and) Kamala Har-ris will be the first woman vice president of the United States,” Pelosi said.

Political experts believe Re-publicans may be invoking such a strategy as a way to rile up Trump’s base before two US Senate runoff elections in Georgia that will determine which party controls the chamber.

Twitter says flagged 300,000 ‘misleading’ election tweets

AFP | Washington

Twitter labelled 300,000 tweets related to the US

presidential election as “po-tentially misleading” in the two weeks surrounding the vote, making up 0.2 percent of election-related posts, the company said.

The social network said the labels were issued between October 27 and November 11, one week before and after the US presidential election on No-vember 3 -- which Democrat Joe Biden won over incumbent Donald Trump.

Of the 300,000 flagged tweets, 456 were covered over by a warning message and had engagement features limited --

users could not like, retweet or reply to the posts, said Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s head of legal, policy and trust and safety, in a blog post.

She estimated that 74 per-cent of people who saw the problematic tweets did so after they had been labeled as mis-leading or flagged with a warn-ing message, and sharing of the posts, as a result, declined by about 29 percent.

During the election period, Twitter posted messages on American users’ pages which were seen 389 million times that “reminded people that election results were likely to be delayed, and that voting by mail is safe and legitimate,” Gadde added.

Obama likens India opposition figure to inept studentAFP | Washington

Former US president Barack Obama in his memoir has

likened Indian opposition fig-ure Rahul Gandhi to a hapless student, in biting commen-tary on the dynastic scion who twice led his party to crushing defeats.

In the book, “Promised Land,” which comes out Tuesday, Obama writes that Gandhi has “a nervous, un-formed quality about him, as

if he were a student who’d done the coursework and was eager to impress the teacher but deep down lacked either the aptitude or the passion to master the subject,” according to a review in The New York Times.

Gandhi led the Indian Na-tional Congress party in 2014 and 2019 general elections, which both resulted in deci-sive victories by Prime Minis-ter Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.

Billie Eilish debuts new single ‘Therefore I Am’ and music video

Fox | Los Angeles

Billie Eilish is back with a new single.

The 18-year-old singer released “Therefore I Am” on Thursday, along with an accom-panying video.

The nearly-five-minute vid-eo begins with Eilish walking through an empty mall before she turns around to face the camera just in time to start sing-ing.

“I’m not your friend or an-ything / Damn, you think that you’re the man / I think, there-fore, I am,” she sings in the cho-

rus. “I’m not your friend or an-ything / Damn, you think that you’re the man / I think, there-fore, I am.”

Eilish continues to run and dance through the mall as she sings and snags a soft pretzel, a doughnut, a drink, a bag of chips and more from empty shops and restaurants.

“Hey!” yells a voice in the dis-tance. “Get out of here!”

The star responds by simply bolting out of the mall with her snacks.

In typical Eilish fashion, the star dons baggy and mismatched clothes for the video, as well as

her green hair and long finger-nails.

The song is somewhat of a departure from her more tradi-tional alternative sounds, lean-ing toward the pop and even hip-hop genres.

Eilish has released two other songs this year: Bond theme “No Time to Die” in Feb. and the single “my future” in late July.

“The video is just the way that the song feels to me — care-less and not really trying,” Billie told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, per People magazine. “The vid-

eo, we, number one, shot on an iPhone, which we didn’t even mean to do.”

‘Friends’ reunion rescheduled for March 2021 Fox | Los Angeles

Matthew Perry has “Friends” fans very excited.

The actor, 51, announced Thursday on Twitter that the highly-anticipated “Friends” re-union special will be debuting in March 2021 on HBO Max.

Castmates Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt LeB-lanc, Courteney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow have yet to comment on the news.

“Friends reunion being re-scheduled for the beginning of March. Looks like we have a busy year coming up. And that’s the way I like it!” he wrote.

Fox News can confirm that a “Friends” taping is being target-ed for the first part of 2021.

In August, the reunion was pushed back because of the

coronavirus pandemic after it was originally supposed to be taped in April and air in May.

Marta Kauffman, the show’s co-creator, previously told En-tertainment Tonight that she wanted to wait to tape the spe-cial because she wanted a live audience to be able to attend.

“We all want it to happen. We just have to wait until it is safe. This is a show that is not scripted, but this is the way the show works -- we are going to need a live audience. Even if we socially distance that live audience, it really is a huge part of what ‘Friends’ is... We can-not do it without them,” she said in August. “Everyone is all in and we are just waiting for that time when it feels connected to bring in a live

audience.”Cast of ‘Friends’ pose during an event

Jada Pinkett Smith: I never worry about being likedBang Showbiz | Los Angeles

Jada Pinkett Smith doesn’t “worry about being liked”.

The 49-year-old actress has insisted she doesn’t care what people think of her, and doesn’t work hard to be “liked” by oth-ers because she thinks it makes her less “authentic” to herself.

She said: “I never worry about being liked because it’s a trick bag. That is the space of manip-

ulation. If you need somebody to like you it’ll be too difficult for someone to act from an au-thentic place.”

And whilst she isn’t too both-ered about how others perceive her, she does do her best to make sure she likes herself.

She added during a preview clip for yesterday’s episode of ‘Red Table Talk’: “But here’s the deal, most people have a diffi-cult time liking themselves. It’s

almost like begging someone to see your true image through a cracked lens. It’s not going to happen.”

The ‘Girls Trip’ star is used to people forming opinions about her thanks to her life in the pub-lic eye, and recently revealed she was “shamed” for allowing her daughter Willow to shave her head. Jada has been sent hateful messages online at sev-eral points in her motherhood

journey, including when Wil-low Smith, now 19, shaved her hair following the release of her hugely successful single, ‘Whip My Hair’, when she was just 10 years old.

Talking to Willow, she said: “I have had my fair share of mom shaming. With Willow, I think the first time I got hardcore criticism, when you first cut your hair, there was a firestorm.”

Kate Mara says filming ‘Fantastic Four’ was a ‘horrible experience’Fox | Los Angeles

Kate Mara is looking back on the filming of “Fan-

2015 flick was rumoured to be plagued by feuds among director Josh Trank, pro-ducers and the film’s stars. Among those headlining the

movie was Mara, 37, who played Sue Storm, a hero with the ability to turn invisible.

Her experience on set was less-than-favour-able, as she recounted in a recent interview with the Television

Academy.“I had a horrible experi-

Verstappen on top in slippery Turkish practice

Reuters | Istanbul

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was fastest in both prac-

tice sessions on Friday as For-mula One returned to Turkey for the first time in nine years.

The times at the Istanbul Park circuit were largely meaningless, however, with the Dutch youngster compar-ing the slippery combination of cold temperatures and fresh asphalt to driving on ice.

Verstappen produced a best lap of one minute 35.077 sec-onds in the morning, more than 10 seconds slower than Sebastian Vettel’s 2011 pole po-sition time for the same team, before lowering it to 1:28.330 in the afternoon.

Thai team mate Alexander Albon, whose future at the team remains uncertain, was second in the opening ses-sion but Ferrari’s Charles Le-clerc was best of the rest after lunch.

Dominant Mercedes moved back up the timesheets, with Valtteri Bottas third fastest by the end of the day and team mate Lewis Hamilton, poised for a seventh championship on Sunday, fourth.

Hamilton, who leads sole title rival Bottas by 85 points with four races to go, was 0.85 seconds off Verstappen’s pace.

They had been ninth and 15th respectively in a first ses-sion of slides and spins on hard tyres, with a number of lap times deleted as drivers ex-ceeded the track limits.

Vettel, the last winner in Turkey and now in his final few races for Ferrari before joining Aston Martin (Racing Point) next season, was fifth and eighth in the two sessions.

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz stopped by the side of the track in the first session af-ter earlier suffering an elec-trical problem, but was 14th in the second. His team mate Lando Norris, celebrating his 21st birthday, was seventh and 10th.

Williams driver George Rus-sell was set to receive a grid penalty for exceeding the al-lowed number of engine parts for the season.

The first session was red flagged within minutes of the start after Leclerc slid into a bollard marking the pit lane entry.

Track workers were earlier seen chasing a stray dog that was reported to have been caught before any cars ven-tured out onto the track.

The race weekend is being held behind closed doors as a result of the COVID-19 pan-demic.

Down to the wire: five WEC titles to be decided todayWorld Endurance Championship’s five title races heads in to final round of the season

• Toyota Gazoo Racing crews are out to fight it out face to face for the FIA World Endurance LMP Drivers’ Championship

TDT | Manama

Three of the World En-durance Championship’s (WEC) eight 2019/2020

season titles have already been decided.

Toyota Gazoo Racing have clinched the FIA World En-durance LMP1 Championship, United Autosports won the FIA Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Teams, and Aston Martin have claimed the GT Manufacturers FIA World Endurance Cham-pionship.

Five other WEC crowns are still up for grabs. Here are how their title races have shaped up heading into today’s final round of the season.

FIA World Endurance LMP Drivers’ Championship

The two Toyota Gazoo Rac-ing crews of Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Kazuki Nakajima (TS050 Hybrid #8), and teammates Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose María Lopez (TS050 #7) are to fight it out face to face today for the FIA World Endurance LMP Drivers’ Championship.

Second in the classification since Fuji last year, victory at Le Mans allowed the Buemi-Hart-ley-Nakajima trio regain the lead by a slim seven points ahead of Conway-Kobayashi-Lopez.

Once again, cruelly denied the win at the 24-hour marathon, the #7 crew will be keen to end on a high a season which has already seen them climb to the top of the podium three times at Silverstone, in Bahrain last year and at Spa- Francorchamps.

Both line-ups have excellent sources of motivation in this race for the title: for the #7 crew, it will be a first world title in endurance racing. At the wheel of the #8, Buemi and Hartley could become the first triple FIA WEC World Champions, as Buemi won the title in 2014 and 2018-2019 with Toyota, while Hartley won in 2015 and 2017

with Porsche. As for Nakajima, he would

consolidate his unique place in Japan’s motorsport history after becoming his country’s first driver to win an FIA World Championship last year.

FIA Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Drivers

United Autosports has al-ready won the FIA Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Teams follow-ing an impressive streak of four consecutive victories. Their drivers Filipe Albuquerque and Phil Hanson—along with Paul di Resta, who missed one round putting him out of the title fight--have all but clinched the Driv-ers’ crown, and only extreme misfortune would remove this from their grasp, with Anto-nio Felix Da Costa and Rober-to Gonzalez trailing behind by nearly 50 points for JOTA.

GT FIA World Endurance Drivers’ Championship

A triangular battle looms be-tween the Aston Martin Van-tage AMRs of Marco Sorensen and Nicki Thiim and Alex Lynn and Maxime Martin, and the AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE EVO of James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi.

They are separated in that order by only 15 points in the general classification of the FIA World Championship for GT

Drivers. The two Aston Mar-tin Racing crews will, however, have to avoid the slightest racing incident or mechanical prob-lem to prevent the Ferrari duo, who won the title in 2017, from claiming a second title.

Calado and Guidi are 26 points behind Thiim and So-rensen. Victory in an 8-hour WEC race nets 38 points plus an additional point for pole po-sition.

FIA Endurance Trophy for GTE Am Teams, FIA Endurance Trophy for GTE Am Drivers

This past WEC season, the quantity has competed with quality in the Le Mans Grand Touring Endurance Amateur

(LMGTE Am) class, with the largest grid in the history of this category. There is no doubt that in Bahrain the spectacle will be there once again, both in the fight for race victory and the FIA World Endurance Cham-pionship Trophies for Drivers and Teams.

Of the 10 entered, no fewer than eight competitors will be aiming for the top 3 places in the final LMGTE Am classification.

Victorious (in class) at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and leader of the provisional general classi-fication, TF Sport and their As-ton Martin Vantage AMR could end with an FIA WEC title after their methodical and victorious climb of the endurance racing pyramid.

Charlie Eastwood and Jonny Adam have formed a successful, tight-knit unit with Salih Yoluc. They will have to overcome the Ferrari of AF Corse, just eight points behind, in the hands of 2016 title winners, Emmanuel Collard and Francois Perrodo, together with Dane Nicklas Nielsen.

The fight for third place in the standings will pit together no fewer than five cars and four teams. With just 28.5 points sep-arating them, Dempsey-Proton Racing, Aston Martin Racing, the two Porsches from Team Project 1 and Gulf Racing have much to fight for.

Delayed contract talks with Hamilton is ‘what we agreed’: WolffAFP | Istanbul

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff on Friday rejected sug-

gestions that delaying contract talks with Lewis Hamilton to the end of the season would leave the driver and the team without any room for manoeu-vre.

Speaking at the Turkish Grand Prix, where Hamilton is seeking to seal a record-equalling sev-enth drivers’ world champion-ship, the Austrian also heaped praise on the Briton’s ambition and commitment.

“This is what we agreed,” said Wolff. “I think it was important to make sure that we have both

titles secured and then have a more relaxed approach to the discussion about the future.”

Hamilton had hinted after winning the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix earlier this month that he was considering retire-

ment, but on Thursday appeared to be more positive, suggesting he would stay with Mercedes next season.

Wolff said that the short pe-

riod of time was not a problem and stressed he did not “feel cornered”.

“No,” he responded. “Not at all cornered – there is a good dependence on each other. We would like him in the car and I think he wants to drive the Mercedes because it is compet-itive so, of course, there is a good balance.”

Wolff ’s contract also expires this year and he admitted that all team principals have “a cer-tain shelf-life” in the job.

“It is not sustainable to do a few hundred races and be the best you that started on the jour-ney,” he said.

Saudi Arabia keen on hosting women racers along with F1 GPReuters | London

Saudi Arabia would welcome hosting the women-on-

ly W Series as a support race for the country’s first Formula One grand prix next year, the head of the Saudi Arabian Mo-tor Federation (SAMF) said on Friday.

W Series announced on Thursday a deal for it to sup-port Formula One at eight, as yet undecided, rounds on the 23-race 2021 F1 calendar.

Formula Two, the feeder se-ries one rung below Formula One, has races scheduled al-ready for the Saudi Arabian GP weekend in Jeddah on Nov 26-28.

“Hopefully we will be one of the lucky countries to host them,” Prince Khalid Bin Sultan Al Faisal, president of the SAMF, told reporters in a video brief-ing when asked about W Series.

“We would like to inspire our locals and bring them these types of events. We would like to see more women racing in Saudi Arabia.

“Sport is for all and we are really pushing women in mot-orsport in Saudi Arabia and we are really taking it seriously... so hopefully we can get an agree-ment and host it with Formula

Two.”Saudi Arabia’s first female

racer Reema al Juffali, who comes from Jeddah, has been competing in the British For-mula Four championship.

W Series founder and chief executive Catherine Bond Muir said the 2021 season might not stretch as far as the November street race in Jeddah.

“I have no objection about going to Saudi Arabia, provided we can establish a meaningful relationship,” she told reporters separately. “And I think that would take some time to put together.”

Toyota seal front rowConway-Kobayashi-Lopez clinch pole in #7 TS050 Hybrid for 8 Hours of Bahrain at BIC, narrowly ahead of teammates Buemi-

• Pole-sitters Conway-Kobayashi-Lopez earned a point in qualifying, narrowing the gap to points leaders Buemi-Nakajima-Hartley in the title fight for the FIA World Endurance LMP Drivers’ Championship

TDT | Manama

Toyota Gazoo Racing sealed the front row last night for today’s FIA WEC

8 Hours of Bahrain at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

The trio of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez landed their #7 TS050 Hybrid in pole for the final round of the 2019/2020 FIA World Endurance Champi-onship (WEC).

The result put them in prime position to secure the highly coveted drivers’ title for the sea-son, but their closest challengers and Toyota teammates Sebas-tien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Brendon Hartley in the #8 TS050 Hybrid will be right be-side them at the 2pm race start.

The #7 crew registered a two-lap average of one minute 40.747 seconds in qualifying, held long after sunset under the bright floodlights of BIC. They were 0.751secs quicker than the #8

trio.Conway-Kobayashi-Lopez

earned a point for taking pole, reducing the deficit in the stand-ings to six behind Buemi-Naka-jima-Hartley.

“I am pleased with pole po-sition and another point,” said Conway. “It went well in qualify-ing and my lap was clean. I didn’t want to make any mistakes, that was the priority, so I am happy to be in the best possible starting position going into turn one.

“It is nice to have pole com-fortably. That’s one part of the weekend out of the way and now we focus on the most important day.”

Nakajima commented: “Qual-

ifying was not really important for us here so we completely focused on the race. In general, it has been quite a challenging weekend for us, as we have a lot of tyre degradation on the long runs. We do not feel super com-fortable and we have no more time on the track to try anything new before the race, so we have to look into the data and try to maximise the performance of the car for the race.”

Earlier in the day yesterday, both Toyota cars were also atop the timesheet following the two practice sessions.

In the second practice of the weekend, the #7 had a best lap of 1:42.857, while in practice

three, the #8 crew set the pace at 1:43.557.

Class leadersMeanwhile, amongst the LMP2

runners, United Autosports con-tinued their superb run of form with their fourth pole in class for the season. Paul Di Resta and Phil Hanson took to the wheel of the #22 Oreca 07 Gibson to set an average time of 1:47.440. Jackie Chan DC Racing will start today’s race second out of the six LMP2 crews competing in Sakh-ir, while third will be the #36 Signatech Alpine Alf of French duo Thomas Laurent and Pierre Ragues.

In the LMGTE Pro class, As-ton Martin Racing’s GT World Championship points-leading pair of Nicki Thiim and Marco Sorensen claimed their second pole of the season with a com-bined average time of 1:56.521

in their #95 Vantage AMR. Just 0.068s behind was the #92 Por-sche GT Team’s duo of Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen in their Porsche 911 RSR-19, while making it three different manu-facturers in the category’s lead-ing positions were the #51 AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE EVO of James Calado and Daniel Serra.

In the LMGTE Am category, Aston Martin Racing completed a qualifying double with the #98

Vantage AMR of Paul Dalla Lana and Ross Gunn combining to set a best time of 1:58.356. Second in class were another Aston Martin in TF Sport’s Jonny Adam and Salih Yoluc, while third were the #62 Red River Sport Ferrari 488 GTE EVO of Kei Cozzolino and Bonamy Grimes.
