Strong in its starting lineup minus an unproven goalkeeper, Bearden looks touse high-powered scoring potential plus proven talent in the midfield and on

defense to cover up a few concerns. Two seasons removed from its back-to-back Class AAA state champi-

onships (2006, 2007), the Lady SoccerDawgs perhaps are hungrierthan ever to win three crowns in five years.

Scoring power should be a BHS strength. Senior SamanthaTurner is the centerpiece of Bearden's offense as a three-time All-state forward.

Christian Academy of Knoxville Girls Soccer is begin-ning to make up ground on their male CAK counter-parts in terms of piling up Class A/AA state titles.

The Lady Warriors finished off an unbeaten 2009 sea-son, 24-0-1, with its third state crown in four seasons.

Plenty of weapons return in 2010 looking for statecrown No. 4 — though a key injury looms large.

A championship mindset also returns. “One of our strengths, I have a group of players who

last year, they were never beaten,” said Ried Estus, who despite losing three All-state honorees to gradua-tion returns seven starters, including two All-state.“They don't know what it's like to lose,” Estus said.“We have a group of players who are expecting to win astate championship. You've got something specialwith thatmindset.”

“We havethe talentpool to make a run at it.”

However, “We have to get a lot better to have thatopportunity,” Estus added. “One, you have to be verygood. Two, you have to be very lucky in that you haveto be healthy at the right time.

“And three, you have to be playing well at theright time, you want to be peaking at the righttime.”

Returning goalkeeper Sally Jernigan, a sen-ior, “Had an accident and did significant dam-age to a bicep muscle; we don't know whenshe'll be back from that,” Estus said.

“We don't know if or when.” Looking to fill the goalkeeping void are

freshman Alexis Viox and junior CatherineBowen, the latter “a basketball player who is

Though returning several key starters from its2009 team, Hardin Valley Academy Girls Soccerteam will field only one senior starter this season.

Two Lady Hawks will lead HVA's highflying efforts. Junior standout Allie Kington, a team captain,

returns at center-midfield. “Her speed is danger-ous,” Hardin Valley head coach Mike McLean said.“She's just overall a total player. She's good at get-ting into the attack from the midfield. She's beingrecruited by some Big East, SEC and ACC schools.”

McLean labels senior four-year returning starterGretchen Johnson — including her freshman year atKarns — “a solid defender. Very, very smart, veryvocal.”

Johnson, also a captain, and Kington “are two thebetter players with experience,” McLean said. “Wedo have some other pretty good players.”

Nine returning starters and “good chemistry” hasWebb School Girls Soccer upbeat for 2010.

Head coach Jennifer Longnecker said her LadySpartans “don't have that superstar diva,” but do have“a lot of talent, and it's spread out.”

“And they all get along, they all like each other,”Longnecker added.

The goal in 2010, Longnecker said, is to reach theTSSAA Division II-A state tournament after falling insubstate action last year.

Looking for a team catalyst, Longnecker points tosophomore goalkeeper Liz Newsom.

“She's a leader, she's vocal, she's an excellent goal-keeper,” the coach said. “The girls all like her, allrespect her.”

Junior Anna Davis and sophomore Emily Edkin lookto provide scoring punch as starting forwards.

While Mark Leader pointed out his Knoxville Catholic Girls Soccer team hasits “entire team back” from 2009, the head coach's focus was not only on fivekey returnees but six special freshmen.

As a result, “Fortunately this year, what's in our favor is we have a verystrong bench, which is the first time I've ever had that,” said coach Leader, who led his 2008 KCHS boys to the Class A/AA state title.

Senior midfielder Brittney Gibson, junior forward Reece McKenzie and soph-omore midfielder Kathryn Culhane “are a step above everybody else,” Leadersaid of the trio. “They're fast.”

Senior Brianne Zimmerman returns as goalkeeper. “She played some last year, she plays as a club goalkeeper, so she should be

pretty solid,” Leader said. “Last year, in the big games they seemed to put herin the goal.”

Turner is joined by senior CarolineGianeselli, a two-time All-Region forward, with junior Kristi Granger adding stillmore experience and talent.

“That's going to be our strength thisyear, no doubt,” Bearden head coach EricTurner said. “With Caroline, Sam andKristi returning, they've all had varsityexperience. ... I think we're going to beable to score.”

Adding depth are sophomore GabrielleGianeselli “and possibly Cassidy Smith, depending on how she develops,” coachTurner said. “Gabrielle played varsity lastyear.”

Junior RebeccaStover, two-timeAll-Region mid-

fielder, returns on the outside. “She's a bigtrack star,” the coach said of Stover's athlet-ic talent as one of the area's top middle dis-tance runners in track.

Still more experience is provided by junioroutside midfielder Olivia Gianeselli, havingstarted since her freshman season.

Plugging up center-midfield is seniorAllison Daniels.

“We like our midfield,” said coach Turner, though pointing out junior midfield starterJessica Logan is out for 2010 with a tornACL. “That kinda leaves us a little thin inthe middle of the field.”

One other midfield spot is up for grabs. Three-time All-Region outside defender

Kimble Glover, a senior, joins returning sen-ior starter Meagan Yoakley, who moves fromoutside to inside defender this season.

The other outside defender spot was upfor grabs at press deadline, with juniors AnaAponte and Monica Kubick in the mix.

Coach Turner said his defense “will be awork-in-progress; I know it'll do well once weget into the season. But we're going to havea learning curve.”

Bearden is breaking in a new goalkeep-er, sophomore Katie Emig “with no var-

sity experience,” the coach said.“We'll just see how she does onceshe gets in the big games.

“It's going to come down towhether Katie can adapt andbecome a big-time player,” headded. “That's what we're looking

for.”Overall, “Our starting lineup I'm

happy with, I think we're going to befine,” coach Turner said. But the coach added that depth is a

huge concern, given “we lost a bunch ofgreat players last year right down the mid-

dle of the field. ... Our biggest concern is all of our subsdon't really have varsity experience.” Other LadySoccerDawgs looking to contribute are Ellen Dickinson,Courtney Norman, Joanna Logan, Annika Goff, Tru Powell,Kelly Riemer, Kayleigh Olson, Nikki Kur, Mackenzie Wall,Rebecca Buchanan, Rachel Crowley, Paige Mayfield,Mallory Denning, Andi Kur, Brooke Williams, KatieGriffith, Brooke Richardson, Kendall Norwood and KatieCottrell.

“I told the team [recently], ‘We hope forthe best with our goalkeeper, and plan forthe worst,’” he added. “Can I get the fresh-men ready quick enough, or the basketballplayer ready quick enough to play at thislevel?” Estus called returning All-state junior forward Kiah Allen“outstanding; she's a finisher, sticks the ball in the backof the net.”

Anchoring the defenseis Laura Foster, earning

All-state honors last season as a fresh-man.

“We may have to move her forward, she's so talented, so fast,” Estus said.“She's capable of scoring goals.

“And we could do that because we alsohave two other returning [defensive]starters,” the coach added about juniortwo-year starters Tessa Piety at stopperand Hayla Stone at sweeper. “They'reexceptional players.”

Joining Allen at forward is seniorKaycee Campbell, unless she starts in the
