Sports Day

On a bright and sunny Friday morning, I was on my way to Woodlands Stadium

with my friends for sports day. I was looking through the window at the breath-taking

view of the bright blue sky with chunks of white beautiful mongolia clouds drifting across

it as I tried to keep calm.

We arrived at the stadium shortly and groups of students were walking into the

stadium. Some reported to the running track for the march-past while the rest went to

the spectator stand. After the march past, the principal gave a short speech and

declared the games open.

The individual races were the first to start. The air gun sounded and the athletes

raced off at the speed of light as the spectators cheered loudly to support their

classmates that were participating in the races. Many other races were held like the 4 x

80m relay race and 6 x 80m relay race.

Finally, it was time for my race event. “The students participating in the 8 x 50m

relay race, please report to the running track now,” Mr Lee announced. My classmates

and I jogged to the track for our event. “Boom! Boom! Boom!” My heart was pounding

hard as I was anxious that I would drag the team down because I was a slow runner.

When athletes were in their ready position at the starting line, Mr Lim shouted,

“On your mark…Get set…Go!” “HONK!” The air horn sounded. My first team member

shot off the starting at the speed of light and passed the baton. I focused and ran off as

fast as my legs could carry me towards my next team member. “Yes!” I thought as I

managed to pass the baton successfully.

Soon after, the prize presentation ceremony started and they called out, “Pupils

from 4 Responsibility that participated in the 8 x 50m boys’ relay race, please come to

the podium area.” When we reached there, all eyes were fixed on the glittering medals

placed on the prize table. The principal presented the medals to us and we wore them

proudly. “Click! Click!” The photographer took photos of us wearing our medals and

standing on the podium.

I enjoyed sports day and I am looking forward to participating in it again next

year.

A Traffic Accident

It was a beautiful breezy day, so I decided to take a stroll along the pavement at

a junction just right outside my house.

I was strolling slowly, enjoying the breeze and the refreshing air. All of a sudden,

I heard a loud sound. ”S-C-R-E-E-C-H” Followed by a loud “B-A-M!” I immediately

turned around and was shocked at what I saw!

Two cars had collided together, I immediately went up to find out what had

happened. It turned out that a taxi was about to turn when a car driver that was

speeding recklessly hit onto the back of the taxi. The car driver tried to screech to a halt

but it was too late. A male teenage boy in the taxi was injured during the collision. The

onlookers immediately called an ambulance.

In a blink of an eye, the ambulance arrived and the paramedics immediately

rushed down with their equipment and a stretcher. The paramedics treated the victim

and lifted him onto the stretcher and left for the hospital.

Not long after the ambulance left, the police also arrived and apprehended the

reckless driver, while another police officer took down statements from the eye

witnesses.

Within days, the man was charged in court and was fined $2500 for reckless

driving causing injury. The judge also suspended his licence for eight months. As for the

victim, he sustained minor injuries and was discharged after receiving treatment.

Justice will always prevail, I hope this kind of horrific accident will never happen

again.

THE ACCIDENT

The harrowing sight had filled everyone’s heart with sickening horror. The cars’

engines were billowing thick smoke and their parts, doors, windows and tires were all

around them. The reckless driver sustained minor injuries while the other was bleeding

and unconscious.

Hello! I am a little Primary 4 boy. My name is Ben. As usual, I was walking home

from school and whistling a cheerful tune. After walking a short distance, I noticed that a

crowd had formed at a junction. I wondered what was happening so I went up to the crowd

and inched through it all the way to the front. I gasped. The sight was horrendous! I asked

a passer-by what had happened. He told me a careless driver had sped recklessly by and

the light suddenly turned red. The careless driver could not stop in time and rammed into

the car in front of him. The car was knocked into the air and landed a few metres away.

The reckless driver was stunned.

Just then, I glanced at the unconscious man and noticed that it was my neighbour,

Mr Tan! He had told me that he had taken half a day off. I could not think any more

because the wailing siren of the police and the ambulance could be heard in the distance.

Soon, the ambulance arrived at the scene along with the police. The paramedics jumped

out of the ambulance and lifted the reckless driver onto a stretcher and carried him into

the ambulance. It was harder to rescue Mr Tan though. The car was on its side and Mr

Tan was sitting inside. But after a while, Mr Tan was also put on a stretcher and whisked

to the nearest hospital for immediate treatment. I felt sorry for poor Mr Tan and promised

myself I would visit him every week.

On my first day of visit, Mr Tan was conscious and was eating his lunch. I told him

that it was a great pity for him to be involved in a traffic accident. He told me that his leg

was broken and he would be hospitalised for 3 months. I told him I would come for weekly

visits and he was happy to hear that. I wished him a speedy recovery. He also told me

that the reckless driver was feeling guilty for his actions.

Safety always comes first. I resolved to be a careful driver when I grow up.

Sports Day Last Friday was sports day, the day I was looking forward to the most this year . I

was really excited to race and try to win my first medal. When I reached my school, I talked to my best friend Spencer about how excited I was and wished my classmates and team members good luck. When we arrived at the stadium, we jumped out of the bus excitedly. We lined up in two straight rows and walked towards the stadium. We sat ddown at the spectator stand and watched the first race event. The athletes went to the tracks and got into their ready positions. A teacher sounded the airhorn "BANG!!!" And the athletes dashed as fast as their legs could carry them towards the finish line. Sounds of encouragements were heard all over the stadium. Some children used their class cheer to cheer their team mates. The whole stadium was going wild as I cheered and shouted at the top of my lungs. After the race ended, my classmate won a 1st runner up position and received a s shiny glittering silver medal. Four events later, it was my relay race event. I walked to the tracks nervously and my palms were sweating. When I reached the track, I got ready and focused my eyes onto the finish line. Once I heard the airhorn,I ran as fast as my legs could carry me and sprinted towards my next team mate. Despite trying our best, we lost. Spencer felt sad so I went to cheer him up by giving him a pat on his back and telling him that he had done well. We watched the prize giving ceremony and everybody was happy and had smiles on their faces. I felt abit jealous but I will try harder next year. After that, we went back to school. Even though I had lost, I will treasure every single sports day and it's not about winning, it's about sportsmanship. Cheng Hong Jun (4)

Helping A Neighbour

It had been a memorable day. It felt great to have helped somebody in need. I

always believed that a simple act of kindness goes a long way.

One early morning, I was bored at home so I went to the supermarket to buy

some breakfast to eat. When I walked out of the lift, I heard a loud clang. I turned

around and I saw groceries all over the floor. I also saw Mr Lim, my elderly neighbour

looking frustrated by all the groceries that had dropped onto the floor.

Without hesitation, I went forward to lend a helping hand. “Let me help you pick

up these groceries. I have a spare bag that I can lend you, ”I said to Mr Lim .A big smile

appeared on Mr Lim’s face, he nodded and said “Thank you , you are an angel!” I

quickly picked up all the groceries on the floor. Once I was done, I was curious so I

asked, “Mr Lim, why do you buy so many things?” He said that there was a discount at

the supermarket and he had brought more groceries to stock up. The bag was as heavy

as lead and had finally torn. After I lent him my recycle bag, I continued my way to the

supermarket.

Later that evening, while I was enjoying myself watching television and being a

couch potato. There was a loud knocking on the door. As quick as lightning, my mother

went to open the door .It was Mr Lim, he spoke to my mother about what had happened

this afternoon and she praised and hugged me. He returned me the recycle bag and

also gave me an ice – cream. I was as happy as a clam because ice –cream is my

favorite snack. I was very proud of myself because I had done a good deed to help

someone.

An Encounter With A Snatch Thief

It was a sunny day, Gary was watching the news broadcast on television. Just then,

he heard the main headline news “A snatch thief was caught last night in Sembawang “.

Gary became interested. He also saw the picture and saw himself in it! He looked up and

recalled what happened a few days ago…

It was a hot morning, Gary has been saving a huge sum of money since Chinese

New Year ended. He finally had enough money to buy a video game “Super Mario

Odyssey “. He counted them carefully and kept it in his wallet safely. While walking, Gary

was engrossed in thinking about it.

Suddenly, he felt his wallet getting tugged from his back pocket. Gary looked

behind him and saw a man with his wallet running away from him! “THIEF, THIEF!” He

exclaimed. Many people witnessed the crime and also heard him shouting but they

ignored him. As quick as he could, he whipped out his phone, took a picture of the thief

and called the police quickly.

It appeared in the newspaper that the snatch thief was caught. Gary heaved a sigh

of relief and hoped that he will receive back the money that was stolen.

Crime does not pay. He felt as light as air as the thief was brought to justice. Who

knew what could have happened? Gary vowed to keep his wallet in his black bag properly

since that day.

Helping A Neighbour It had been an unforgettable day. It felt great to have helped someone in need. I have always thought that a simple act of kindness goes a long way. Last Monday evening, I was on my way to the supermarket to buy a packet of flour as my mother was baking a cake. As I came out of the lift below my block, I saw an elderly man struggling to carry two heavily laden grocery bags. “Clang! Clang!” Suddenly, one of the plastic bags containing his groceries tore and all the groceries scattered onto the floor. The uncle’s face was as black as coal. Without hesitation, I sprang into action to lend a helping hand. “Uncle let me help you to pick up all your groceries. I have a spare recycle bag. You can use it.” I said to him. “Thank you, you are my angel.” he said to me. I felt as happy as a clam. Then, I tried my best to gather all the things as quickly as I could. There were many cans of pet food so I asked the elderly uncle why did he buy so many cans. He explained that there was a promotion at the supermarket and therefore he had bought many cans of pet food to stock up. After we had gathered all the pet food into the recycle bag, the uncle thanked me gratefully for lending a hand. Then, he headed home and I continued to make my way to the supermarket. In the evening, while I was doing my homework, there was a loud knock on my door. To my surprise, it was the uncle whom I had helped earlier. He returned me my recycle bag and gave me some sweets to eat. I thanked him and was as happy as a lark as I have a sweet tooth! Even without a reward, I would have been happy to have helped somebody in need.

Helping A Neighbour

It had been a wonderful day. It felt great to have helped somebody. I have always

believed that a simple act of kindness goes a long way.

Earlier this morning, I was heading to a nearby field to play soccer when I heard a

loud sound which reverberated through the void deck. “CLANG!” Instantly, I turned around

and saw cans rolling all over the floor. I saw a hand reaching out for the cans behind a

pillar. I crept closer to it. Upon further investigation, I realised that is my elderly neighbour

living on the same floor as me who had dropped the cans. He was having difficulty picking

up the cans as he could not squat down easily.

Without much hesitation, I rushed over to render my help. I picked up the cans as

quickly as I could. After collecting all the cans, I offered to carry them to his house. The

cans were as heavy as lead! When I reached his house, I placed the cans on his kitchen

table. As I was about to walk out of his house, my elderly neighbour asked me politely to

wait for him in the living room for a short while.

Suddenly, I remembered that I had to meet my friends at the nearby field to play a

game of soccer. I looked at my watch and realised it was the end of the game and I was

supposed to start to make my way home by now. Even though I had missed the game, I

did not feel too upset as there will always be more opportunities to play with my friends in

future.

A few minutes later, my elderly neighbour came out of his kitchen and gave me a

tub of milo ice cream to express his gratitude. I thanked him profusely. Even without a

reward, I would have been as happy as a dog with two tails to have helped somebody in

need.

It was a Friday morning and the sun was shining brightly. The march pass would be starting soon. My heart was thumping rapidly as I was nervous about my Sports Day running event for the ahead. But I believe I was mostly ready for the events.

I was sitting down cheering for my friends when an announcement boomed over the speakers, “Pupils in the 6x50 metre relay, please report to the teacher now.” My friends and I went down to the starting are and reported to the teacher in-charge. I was very nervous and excited at the same time as I was the last runner and the whole class was counting on me to win the race. BANG! The starter gun sounded. The athletes were sprinting down the tracks. Spectators were cheering wildly. Once Tom passed me the baton, I took off as fast as my legs could carry me and bolted through the finish line. “YES!” “We won!” I was as happy as a lark as I punched the air in delight. The feeling of happiness bubbled inside me. I went back to the spectators stand feeling triumphant. After the 6x50 metre relay race, the individual races started, I was cheering happily for my friends as they sprinted down the tracks. Click! Click! Click! The photographer took a picture of the winners with a smile plastered across their face as they stood on the podium. During the prize-giving ceremony, everyone was looking eagerly at the scoreboard to see if their class had won the level champion. Unfortunately, we did not win. However, we were all happy and proud of ourselves.

It was a wonderful day that day and I enjoyed myself very much. I was proud of myself as I had won a medal. To me, Sports Day is not all about winning, it is also about displaying sportsmanship.

SPORTS DAY

When I woke up in the morning, I saw the shiny medal that I had won in this

year's sports day...

It was sports day, the most exciting day in the school calendar that I had been

waiting for a long time. We gathered in school and then took the school bus to

Woodlands Stadium. In the bus, my classmates were chatting excitedly to each other

about the big trophies and shiny medals that we could win. When we reached the

Woodlands Stadium, we quickly alighted from the bus and entered the stadium where

we were led to our seats by Mr lee.

After a while, the march pass started followed by the principal's speech then she

declared the sports day open. The first events were the relay races by the primary five

students. Next it was the individual races for the primary four level. I cheered wildly for

my classmates when they were racing. Soon it was my turn for my relay race I went to

the track and got ready.

''Bang '' I heard the gunshot and sprinted as fast as I could. I reached out my

hand when I was near to my next team mate and passed the baton to him. "Yesss!" We

shouted as our team had come in as the first runner up.

After sometime, it was time for the prize presentation. We proudly wore our

medals and smiled at school photographer who was taking picture of us. After the prize

presentation, we took a bus back to school and went home. I really enjoyed sports day

and looking to participate again next year.

Snatch Theft

“Ah! I almost forgot about the newspaper!” I said as I went to the doorstep to

collect it. One of the headline news caught my attention: “Snatch Thief caught at

Sembawang Drive”. A shudder ran down my spine as I thought about the harrowing

event that had happened yesterday afternoon...

I had just withdrawn a large sum of money from the bank that I had saved for two

months. “Two hundred and fifty-three dollars, enough to buy a whole box of LOL dolls,” I

thought gleefully. I looked left and right and kept the money in my wallet carefully.

As I was walking on a pedestrian path to a shopping mall, I felt a sudden tug on

my sling bag. I felt my bag being ripped away from me! I was startled and looked up

immediately to see a young man sprinting away...he was getting away with all my

money in it! “THIEFFFF!” I yelled as loudly as I could, gesturing wildly and pointing to

the culprit running away as fast as his legs could carry him.

Two men immediately gave chase. Luckily, they managed to catch up with the thief

and shove him onto the ground. By the time I caught up, they had already pinned the

thief down. “Ouch!” the thief groaned in pain. I fished out my phone and called “999”.

Within minutes, the police car arrived and two policemen approached us.

By then, a crowd had formed and were pointing disapprovingly at the snatch thief

and talking about his heinous act to steal in broad daylight. The policemen thanked the

two men for chasing the thief. They then escorted the thief into the police car. I thanked

the two brave men profusely for their help.

Crime never pays. I am happy that the thief has been brought to justice. I am also

relieved to get my money back. In future, I swear to be extra careful and hold on to my

bag properly when I have any valuables or cash with me.

Not Following Instructions

As I flipped through the pages of my diary, I felt a chill go down my spine as I recalled the awful scolding…

About a year ago, I went to a workshop at the Sembawang Community Centre to learn how to bake cookies. Once I reached the Sembawang Community Centre, I went to room 152,I chose a seat in the first row and settled down. Soon, the teacher entered and we greeted, “Good morning Mdm Ang”. She then gestured us to sit down and started to go through the safety rules for the baking lesson. She droned on and on for about fifteen minutes. “So long…” I mumbled to myself. Not long after, we started baking the Christmas cookies. “TINGGG!” My cookies were done. I was excited and missed the teacher’s instructions to use the oven gloves when removing the baking tray. Instead, I had used my bare hands to grab the hot metal tray. OUCH!!! The teacher telephoned my mother who quickly brought me to the clinic to get treatment. My mother also reprimanded me for not following instructions.

Once bitten, twice shy. After this incident, I always follow instructions. Kayli-Jane Goh Wen Xuan (12)

“Ring…” My alarm clock rang. It was sports day! I took a quick bath and rushed to the

living room. I gobbled down my breakfast and dashed to school.

The assembly had started. I reached the school just in time. After the assembly, we

proceeded to the waiting area for our bus. After ten minutes, the bus arrived. I was sleepy

so I took a short nap on the bus.

After a while, we reached Woodlands Stadium. “Event one participants, please

proceed to the tracks in five minutes.” That was my event. I quickly rushed to the tracks.

Mr Lee was pointing the air gun in the air. My heart was thumping rapidly as I realised

that my competitors were faster than me as we had competed in a friendly race before.

“On your marks…” I got ready in my lane. “Get set, GOOO!”I ran as fast as my legs

could carry me to the finish line. AS I neared the finish line, one of my competitors

accidentally brushed against me. The impact caused me to slow down a little. I came in

fourth in the end. I went back to my seat, afraid that my friends will scold me for losing.

But surprisingly they did not, instead they gave me pats on the back to encourage me.

That made me feel much better.

For the next one and a half hour, I watched my friends compete in their events. Some

of them won medals. After the sports day, we went back to school, feeling elated. We

can’t wait for the next sports day.

Sports Day

Last Monday, I woke up feeling tired. Sports Day! How could I forget. I jumped out of bed, pull on my clothes, brushed my teeth and went downstairs for breakfast. I looked out of the window and saw the sun shining brightly. It was the perfect weather for sports day. After breakfast, I took the school bus to school feeling excited. From there we continued our journey to Woodlands Stadium.

Soon we reached the stadium, Mr Lee, our teacher brought us to our seats at the spectator stand. They were many events, the march past, relay races and individual races. I was taking part in the 100 metre individual race as I was one of the faster runners in our class.

Soon, the march past was over, it was time for the first event to start, the 50 metre sprint. My classmate taking part in the event went over to the starting line and got ready. “Beep!” The air horn sounded, signaling the start of the race. All the runners dashed off. We cheered wildly for our classmate. Yes! He won! I was going to congratulate him when an announcement boomed over the speaker “May the participants for the 100 metre sprint report to the starting line.”

I jogged over to the starting line. “Good luck!” My friends called after me. “Beep!” I dashed off and was in the lead. However, another runner caught up and was running the same pace as me. Approaching the finishing line, I used my last burst of energy and sped past the finishing line. A loud cheer erupted from the spectator stand. I had won! I walked back to my seat. My friends gave me pats on the back and congratulated me. My friends’ races were soon over. The first team came in second but the second team dropped the baton and lost their chance to win. Overall, we still had the highest score for Primary four.

I was on cloud nine. I bounced up and down in my seat waiting impatiently for the prize giving ceremony to start.

“May the winners for the races report to the teacher-in-charge beside the podium.” We rushed towards the podium, waiting as the teacher arranged all the winners. My friends and I stepped up the podium to receive our medals for the individual and relay races.

Cameras clicked and flashed as the school photographer took pictures for us. Finally, it was time to receive our class trophy. Our class representative went up onto the podium and raised the trophy high. I stood there thinking about how lucky I am to receive a medal!

After all the excitement, it was time to go back to school. We boarded the bus and began our journey back. I was tired but at the same time thrilled. I learnt many things from this event, but most importantly I learnt about sportsmanship. Sports Day is surely one of the mast exciting event on the school calendar.

HELPING A NEIGHBOUR

I felt both proud and happy after helping someone in need. Let me tell you what

happened yesterday…

I was on my way to Pasta Mania to order some food when I saw my elderly

neighbour, Mr Tan carrying to big bags of items. “Hi Mr Tan, do you want me to help you

carry your bags of things?” I asked Mr Tan. “No, it’s okay, I don’t wish to trouble you,” he

said with a smile. Suddenly, I heard a loud sound coming from Mr Tan’s direction.

We were shocked for a split second. Mr Tan’s plastic bag had torn and all his

groceries had spilled onto the ground! I immediately ran forward to render my help. I gave

Mr Tan an extra plastic bag that I had with me to put the items that he had dropped inside.

As I was picking the items he had dropped. I was curious because there were many cans

of jelly and lollipops. Mr Tan told me that he was going to celebrate his five-year-old

grandson’s birthday party in the evening. Mr Tan was very grateful to me for helping him

and thanked me profusely. I walked to Pasta Mania with a spring in my steps, feeling glad

that I had helped somebody.

Later in the evening, when I was enjoying myself watching television and being a

couch potato, the door bell rang. My mother stopped cooking and hurried to open the

door. To her surprise, it was Mr Tan. “Your son Jerry was very kind this morning. He lent

me this bag to put the things that I dropped in it,” Mr Tan said. “Oh, really? At home Jerry

only helps out once in a blue moon!” my mother said as she giggled. Upon hearing that,

Mr Tan also started laughing. “Hey, I almost forgot this,” Mr Tan said while holding up a

big piece of cake and a chocolate biscuit.” Give this to Jerry,” he whispered. “Thanks!”

Mother exclaimed and immediately brought it to me. Mother said goodbye and closed the

door.

I felt as happy as a dog with two tails. I felt really happy to have helped someone

Every time, I go to shoe shops with my mother, I thought of what happened on that day…

It was a scorching hot day at Woodlands stadium, but everyone was in high spirits. I was

getting ready to run the 6x50m relay race. “BANG!” the gunshot sounded. I watched as the

athletes ran as fast as their legs could carry them towards the finishing line. “6x50m relay race

A few minutes later, we were led to the tracks to get ready for our race. I felt a little anxious,

but when I saw the medals displayed, I was motivated and knew I could do it. “BANG!” the

gunshots sounded. I was running as fast as I could hoping not to lose to the other classes. While

I was running, I accidentally tripped and fell on the floor. But I was not ok, the sole of my shoe

came off and I had no choice but to take them off. “OWWWWWWW HOT!’’ I exclaimed. As I felt

a burning sensation on my bare feet as I ran. The track was so hot that it made me run even faster

than before.

All the other athlete’s jaws dropped as they saw me ran pass them. They were all shocked

to see me run ahead of them. But I had no time to lose, I had to WIN!

Suddenly, Leroy caught up with me as if he was Flash. I was shocked. So I channeled all

my energy and charged toward the finishing line and…… I WON!

After all the races were completed, the winners were asked to step forward. The table was

filled with glittering shiny trophies. Being a winner felt so good. I punched my hand into the air in

delight .I said to Leroy “better luck next time, try to beat me if you can”. Leroy said “oh I will, I’ll

see you next year”. The VIP gave out the medals .The winners wore their medals which glinted

in the sun. All the spectators were cheering loudly.

When I boarded the bus to go back to my school, my feet still felt hot. Suddenly a

realization hit me and I shouted in the bus “I FORGOT TO BRING MY SHOES HOME”.

“Go! Go! Go! “The pupils cheered, that was the most memorable day in my life. It all started

on a blistering hot day at Woodlands Stadium.

It was the school sports day, competitors were all getting ready. The rest of the pupils

were at the spectators stand cheering with their banners and pom–poms. I was participating in

the 6 x 50 m relay race. I was feeling nervous but when I saw the shiny medals and trophies

displayed at the prize-giving table, I was motivated to win the race.

“Competitors who are participating in the 6x50m baton passing race, please report to the

field now!” After the announcement, my classmates and I ran to the gathering ground. The teacher

led us to the field and we got ourselves into positions to start the race. Before the race started, I

did some stretching to warm up my body.

“Bang!” sounded the gun, everybody started running as fast as they could. Just as I was

running, I heard someone shouting my name, which was weird. So, when I turned back, I saw my

friend, Lucas waving the baton with an angry look on his face. At that moment, I was horrified that

I had forgotten to collect the baton from him. I quickly ran back and took the baton from him and

ran as fast as I could, as if a tiger was chasing after me. Even though I managed to catch up with

the other groups, but because of my “blunder”, we only managed to win third place.

All my teammates were very sad but they did not blame me. Instead they gave me a hug

and said “Even though we are not the first, we still won the third prize. “ I went up with my friends

onto the podium to collect our bronze medals and trophies. The other class walked past us trying

to show off their gold medals. But I was not embarrassed, I told them “Just wait till next year! I’ll

win it all back! “There were also some classmates from the school photography club who took

photographs of us. We made funny faces happily and smiled at the camera.

When I was taking the bus home, I thought of all the all the funny scenes that happened

today. The blunder I did was the talking point of the whole class. The fun we had together with

my schoolmates and we also took wefies together. What a tiring but fun sports day it was!

Helping A Neighbour

Being a couch potato and scooping mint flavoured ice-cream into my mouth every few seconds feels great after a long day. My mother only allowed me to eat some ice-cream after dinner because I had done a good deed. I have always believed that a simple act of kindness goes a long way…

It was a hot and humid Saturday afternoon. The clouds sailed across the clear blue sky. I was going to the supermarket to buy some cleaning items for my mother as we were doing spring cleaning. Chinese New Year was around the corner and Mother wants the house sparkling clean. I felt as light as air as I skipped joyfully out of the lift when I saw a familiar face. It was my elderly neighbor, Mr. Lee. He was struggling to carry plastic bags that looked as heavy as lead. I wanted to lend a hand but before I could do so, there was a loud clang. One of the plastic bags containing groceries had torn. Cans rolled onto the pavement and made a big mess. A group of teenagers were passing by, looking amused at what they saw.

At the drop of a hat, I sprang into action to render my help. “Uncle, let me help you

pick up the cans. I have a spare recycle bag in my pocket. You can use it as it will not tear so easily.” “Thank you, young child, you are an angel,” Mr. Lee replied.

I bent down and gathered all the cans as speedily as I could. I placed them in my

recycle bag and handed it over to Mr. Lee. He thanked me profusely and assured me that he could manage. He bidded me farewell and headed back to his apartment. I thought of how worried Mother will be if I were to return home late, so I hurried to the supermarket to get the cleaning items.

Later that evening, I was enjoying my favorite show on the television. I was

laughing away when the doorbell rang. It was my neighbor, Mr. Lee. He had come to return my recycle bag and to give me a tub of mint flavoured ice-cream. Mint happens to be my favorite flavour! He related to my mother that I had done a good deed. Mother grinned from ear to ear when she heard about how I had helped Mr. Lee. I thanked Mr. Lee for the ice-cream. We said our goodbyes and Mr. Lee headed home.

My mother decided to let me eat some of the ice-cream after dinner. I was as happy

as a dog with two tails when she gave me a gigantic bowl of ice-cream. Even without a reward, I would have been happy to have helped someone in need.

Last Thursday, after I woke up I checked my calendar. It was sports day! I quickly

got ready for school. After I reached my school, I saw that all my friends were as excited

as me for sports day. My form teacher Mdm Chua, brought us to the bus. I sat down

with my best friend. We were talking about how long it took to train for this day.

When we reached Woodlands Stadium, Mdm Chua brought us to our seats. We sat

and waited for a while. Soon, the march past started. We saw some of our friends doing

the march past. The athletes took an oath and then then the principal gave a short

speech and declared the games open.

I could not wait for my race to start. Soon, the individual races started, followed by

the relay races. I cheered for my friends, some had done well and won medals. They

were happy and proud of themselves. I really wanted to win a medal. Then, it was going

to be my relay race. I was nervous as I was the first runner. We all went to our positions.

The horn sounded and I ran as fast as my legs could carry me.

I passed the baton to my friend smoothly and he dashed to the next teammate.

Our team tried our best but we lost! I was very sad, but at least my friends and I enjoyed

the teamwork. Our other classmates cheered for me at the race. I was glad that my

friends were there for me. I cheered for my friends for the rest of the sports day. At least

I had fun with my friends.

It was the prize presentation, I clapped for my friends on the podium receiving their

medals. The photographer took a photo of the winners. Suddenly, an announcement

was made that my class had won the cheering contest. I was proud my class had won a

trophy! I was in disbelief. We held onto the trophy proudly for the photo taking.

My classmates and I went onto the bus to go back to school. We were very happy

that we had won a trophy. Mdm Chua brought us to the classroom. We placed the

trophy onto a shelf. Each time I walk into the classroom, I will remember sports day!

We arrived earlier than the rest of the class because we were involved in the

The first race was the individual 100m race. My friend from my class, Rueben,

went the starting line. ’’Bang!!!!!!!!’’The air horn sounded. The athletes took off. It was a

close shave! We almost won!

“Competitors for race 3, please report to Mr. Yadi now’’ the announcement

boomed over the speakers. I and my teammates were taking part in the 8 x50m relay

race. We hurried to the starting line to get ready. Butterflies were fluttering in my

stomach. My best friend assured me that I would do well. As I was the last runner, I was

quite nervous. I waited for the baton. My classmate passed it to me smoothly and I took

off as my legs could carry me. We had won the race!!!!! My teammates were giving us

pats on our backs. We all were as happy as a lark.

Then we went back to the spectators stand. My teacher handed out refreshments

to us, soy bean and bread.

I watched the athletes compete the races, most of the pupils were cheering on

top of their lungs but some were playing.

Next was the prize ceremony. My teammates and I were waiting exciting for it.

We saw glittering trophies laid out neatly on the prize table. When it was our turn, we

Not Following Instructions

Every time Terry sees the scars on his arm, he remembered the most painful

moment of his life. . .

Terry, Lucy and Mary has signed up for baking lessons at the community centre.

Their instructor, Mr John was going to teach them how to bake cookies. When their

instructor was giving out the instructions, Terry was thinking about how the end product

would taste like. Unknown to him, he had missed out on the safety instructions to use

mittens. . .

Terry, Lucy and Mary formed a group and started baking the cookies. “I will be in

charge of mixing the ingredients together!” exclaimed Lucy. “I want to measure out the

ingredients needed!” Mary rushed to the fridge and took out the ingredients needed to

make cookies. “I’ll keep track of the time needed to bake the cookies and be the

timekeeper.” Terry said.

After mixing all the ingredients, Lucy placed the dough onto a tray and slid it into

the oven.

“One hundred degrees!” Terry adjusted the oven temperature to the right

temperature. Twenty minutes later, DING! The cookies were ready! Impatiently, Terry

opened the oven door and grabbed the baking tray with his bare hands. “OWWWW!” He

shouted at the top of his lungs and cried out in pain. Mr John ran as fast as his legs could

carry him towards Terry. Mr John chided Terry for not following instructions to use the

oven mittens.

Terry’s parents were informed of the incident and they quickly sent him to the clinic.

The doctor treated his wounds carefully. Luckily, the burns injury was not too serious.

Once bitten, twice shy. From that day onwards, Terry tried his best to listen carefully

to the instructions given out by other people.

In the morning, I had gone to the bank to withdraw some money. I had wanted to

All of a sudden, I felt someone pulling my bag. I turned my head and realized a

“THIEF!”I pointed at the thief running away as fast as his legs could carry him.

Some men helped to chase the thief and I immediately fished out my phone to

call the police. Thankfully, one of the men managed to catch the thief onto the ground.

The thief was groaning in pain.

Every time I see the scars on my arms and legs, I recall what had happened a few

months back. I have a video in my head that keeps replaying over and over again each

time I think about the horrific accident.

I was driving on Redhill street as I was going to work. The street was rammed with

cars as people were going to work as well. Abruptly, my handphone started ringing “Ring!

Ring! Ring!” My best friend was dialling me! I wondered why she was calling me. I

answered the call as I was stopped at the traffic light,“Hey, do you want to meet up for

lunch?”She asked. The traffic light turned green, so I drove ahead. I then replied,“Sure!

Whe-”

“SCREECH!!!” I screeched to a halt! I was so engaged talking to my best friend that I

did not notice that another car was in front of me! My car’s front glass was shattered. I

was bleeding profusely as the tiny pieces of shattered glass cut into my skin. The driver

in the other car’s head was bleeding as well, and he was unconscious. I was stuck in the

driver’s seat as I could not move. I felt guilty of being preoccupied and I regretted picking

up the call while driving.

A few minutes has passed, and many passers-by have stopped and started

surrounding us. A woman shouted in shock: “SOMEONE CALL THE AMBULANCE!”

Another passer-by urgently dialled the ambulance.

Soon, the crowd had decreased and the ambulance arrived, so did the police! The

paramedics took two stretchers and hurried out of the ambulance. They put me and the

other driver onto the stretchers and lifted us onto the back of the ambulance. The police

closed the area that the accident occurred at.“ZOOM!” They rushed us to the nearest

hospital as fast as they could. We were attended to immediately in the emergency.

Thankfully, I only had minor injuries. So the doctors prescribed me some painkillers

and a few days of rest in the hospital as the nurses had to keep an eye on my injuries.

Once bitten, twice shy. I was ashamed of hurting a stranger in the worst way possible.

I have learnt my lesson to NEVER talk on the phone while driving on a street from then

As I read the headline news about a traffic accident near Sun Plaza, I recalled

It was a hot and humid day, I was walking to Sun Plaza to meet my best friend,

CRASH! Oh no! He had crashed into a taxi. The passenger inside the taxi flew

Both Mr Tan, the taxi driver and the passenger were bleeding profusely.

I was shocked! I quickly took out my phone and pressed the numbers “999”.

“This is the police how may I help you?” “Help! There is a car accident near Sun Plaza!’”

I cried. ‘’Don’t worry we will be there shortly,” a policeman said. Soon the siren of the

ambulance and the police car could be heard.

The paramedics carried Mr Tan, the taxi driver and the passenger onto the

recorded it into the notebook.

I went to see Mr Tan at the hospital. Mr Tan felt guilty and promised not to be a

happened...

"Ring ring! Ring ring!" Tom's alarm clock rang. "Just five more minutes would not hurt." He thought as he turned off his alarm clock. Thirty minutes later, he woke up. He looked at his alarm clock and was shocked to see that it was seven o' clock! He was going to be late for work! Tom quickly got ready and hopped into his car. He turned on the engine and sped to his workplace. He skipped some red lights. He was sure his boss would give him a dressing down. As he turned his car, a silver car came out of nowhere and it was in the way of Tom! Tom tried to brake his car but... BANG! The two cars crashed into each other. Both drivers were bleeding profusely. Some passers-by stopped to look at the car's crashed metal parts while another passer-by called the ambulance and the police. Both Tom and the silver car's driver groaned in pain and wished that this pain would stop.

"EEE ORR! EEE ORR!" The wail of the siren could be heard from afar. The ambulance and police had arrived and the paramedics rushed out with two stretchers. They put both of them onto the stretchers and rushed them to nearest hospital-KK Hospital. The police investigated the case. When they reached KK Hospital, they were rushed to the Emergency Room and given immediate treatment. At last, the doctors were successful in treating both Tom and the silver car's driver. They had their cars fixed up too, but Tom was feeling guilty about what he had done.

to wake up when his alarm clock rang and drove carefully to work. It was a painful and

Everybody clapped for the injured teacher and hoped that she would be alright. Finally, the principle was going to announce the winners for the events! My hopes were high. " And in first place... FOUR RESPECT!" Some students got out of their seats and jumped up and down, hugged each other and even ran around. I felt gloomy at first but after a-while, I got over my disappointment. The winners stood at the podium and people were taking pictures. The winners were grinning from ear to ear. Not following instructions

Everytime when I see the scar on my hand I recalled what happened when I was

in Cebu. This was what happened two months ago…

“Finally! The June holiday are here!’’ I exclaimed it was my first baking lesson at

Cebu Mall. “Good Morning our instructor,” Mrs Lee said to us.

Not long later, we prepared our ingredients and Mrs Lee started the

demonstration. After the demonstration, Mrs lee told us the safety rules, especially

regarding the hot ovens. Soon, the baking lesson started, I quickly mixed the

ingredients together and put the icing into the mixture we only have 2 hours left so I put

the mixture into the oven and put it to 300 degree celsius.

2 hours later, after we had baked our cake, the teacher reminded us to use the

mittens to get the cake out but I was nonchalant. I was too excited when my cake was

done baking. I quickly took the cake out of the oven with my bare hands. Ouch! The

heat of the metal tray had burnt my hand. When the teacher heard my cries, she rushed

over and said, “Why you did not use the mittens. I told everyone to put on the mittens

but why you did not follow instructions.” Then she took out the first –aid kit and she

bandage up my hands and she called my parents. When my parents head about it, they

immediately rushed over to take me to the clinic. They were worried about me but the

doctor assured that I’ll be fine 2 months later. I felt really guilty for not following

instructions.

Once bitten, twice shy. I had learnt to follow instructions carefully and not to be

nonchalant in future. I vow that I will not commit the same mistake again!

An Encounter With A Snatch Thief I beamed with pride as I walked onto the stage to collect my certificate. The policemen praised me for helping someone. This was what happened last week. It was a scorching hot afternoon. I was walking back home from school. My schoolbag weighed a tonne. Sweat trickled down my face. Suddenly, a masked man dashed past me. I ignored him. Out of the blue, a loud scream pierced through the air. "Thief!" someone shouted. I looked up to see the masked man running away from a woman with a hand bag. The woman was pointing to the masked man and shouted,"THIEF!" I threw down my bag and immediately ran as fast as my legs could carry me but I was much slower compared to the thief. I was about to give up when I remembered what my teacher taught me: perseverance. Suddenly, I felt a surge of energy. I ran faster and the thief was shocked by my sudden acceleration in speed. In a flash, I caught up with him. A young man decked out in his Armani suit walked past me and helped me pin down the thief. He put up a fierce struggle but it was in vain. Without a moment to waste, I whipped out my phone to call the police. Within five minutes, the wail of police siren could be heard. Two police officers approached us. One officer handcuffed the thief and the other officer took down eye-witness account from me and the woman. After that, the policemen returned the handbag to the woman and took the police station for further questioning. The next day, I was given a certificate for helping someone. The woman also came to my school and thanked me profusely for my help. Crime never pays, it will only get you a criminal record. I was glad that the snatch thief had been brought to justice. I was also glad that the woman got her handbag back. In future, I will be extra careful and hold on to my bag properly to avoid being a victim of crime. Wang Xinchen (37)

Sports Day

“Yay! Finally, we are here! I shouted as my class and I arrived at the woodlands

stadium. I was so excited, I hoped I can win a medal this sports day. WOW! The

stadium was HUGE! Soon there was a march past, the principal gave her opening

speech, and the games began!

“Event one, individual race, runners for this event please proceed to the tracks!

The announcer boomed over the speakers. The athletes hurried to the track, and soon

the race began. While waiting for my turn, I watched avidly as they ran. The P6 athletes

ran so fast! I wish I could be like them. Mast of the spectators were cheering and

supporting for their class, but some of them were playing and fooling around.

After about an hour later, it was my event. My event was a relay race. There were

eight runners in each team and each team member had to run fifty meters with a baton.

I was so excited that I could feel my heart in my throat. “Runners for event twenty,

please report to the track.” The announcer said out loud with his microphone. Me,

Reuben, Spencer, Hong Jun, Peter an others walked to the track to get ready for the

race.

“Ready, set, BEEP!” The teacher shouted as he shot his air gun. All of the runners

dashed as fast as they could. When it was Reuben’s turn, we were taking lead! But

when it was Peter’s turn, we were in the fourth place! I was so nervous, I started to have

cold sweat. When it was my turn, I dashed with all my might. I knew my stamina was

weak, but somehow, we ended up in the second place ! I was so happy, all my

classmates cheered for me.

Soon, it was the prize-giving ceremony. My team had won the first runner-up and

we stepped on to the podium with a big ‘2’ below it. The principal handed us our silver

medals and the school photographer took a picture. For that moment, I felt so proud, I

was on cloud 9! On the bus, I thought, “one extra medal to my collection!”

who are standing at the podium. My cousin returned to his seat and I congratulated him,

“Well done my cousin!” My cousin asked, “Have you ever won a medal before?” His

question prompted me to recall everything that happened last week during sports day…

When I reached my school, my principal spoke to us, “All right, today is sports day

and I hope you will enjoy the competition. We will board the bus class by class starting

from the primary 4 first.”

After I boarded the bus, I started to chit chat with my friends. When we reach the

stadium, all the classmates from my class were very excited and nervous. After we were

seated, an announcement boomed over the speakers, “All the participants participating

in the 5x100m relay race please come down to the tracks and get ready.”

My friend, Alicia, was a participant in the relay race. Before Alicia went down, I

gave her a pat on her back and encourage her, “You can do it!” After she heard this, she

looked more confident. Once Alicia was at the track, I heard Mr Yaidi shouted, “On your

mark get set go!” and the air horn sounded loudly.

All the athletes dashed off as fast as their legs could carry them. When they

reached to the finishing line, I looked at the scoreboard. I felt so proud! Alicia had won!

All my classmates cheered wildly.

Next, it was my turn to run the individual race. I felt excited and nervous. Once the

air horn sounded, all of us ran as fast as jaguars. When I finished the race, I checked the

scoreboard and I felt proud of myself for getting second place.

After that, it was the prize giving ceremony. The camera went Click! Click! Flash!

I was on cloud nine. I punched the air in delight.

Recalling everything that had happen, I send to my cousin,” Yes, I had won the

second prize medal.” It was a memorable day that I will not forget for a long time.
