PE and Sport Premium Action Plan 2016-17

Academic Year: 2016-17 Total Funding Allocation: £8,600 Anticipated spend: £8600

Indicator 1: Engagement and healthy active lifestylesHealthy behaviour in childhood and the teenage years set patterns for later life and, if acquired early can have a dramatic impact on well-being. Nearly a quarter of all reception-aged children and one third of year 6 pupils are overweight or obese and it has been documented that inactivity causes nine per cent of premature mortality.Identify the children who are least active or who are at risk of obesity and design targeted physical activity interventions specifically for them. The focus needs to be on enjoyment, so engage these pupils by offering a breadth of appealing activities that include plenty of exercise and promote wider health and well-being messages in a young people-centered environment.

To engage all pupils in regular physical activity

Continue to use Future Games planning to plan an active, robust PE curriculum.Continue to employ a Sports Coach from Future Games to support and encourage the delivery of a robust curriculum and to deliver a wide range of additional curricular opportunities.

Future Games (£4290 Sept – July)

There is planned PE provision which includes progression, differentiation and assessment. This is used across the school and has provided the school with a full scheme of work for PE. We have used our coach from Future Games to support this development, to support our teachers and to help develop their skills and to support us with assessment. Our coach from Future Games has also enabled us to develop the amount and quality of extra curricular clubs and activities this year. This has also enabled more children, from across the school to be involved in extra curricular physical activities. This is particularly evident at lunchtime, where children are invited to ‘come along’ without the need to sign up and commit. This has had a positive effect and a large majority

Continue with this planning and planned provision into next year. Continue to use Future Games coach to deliver additional extra curricular opportunities. Continue to encourage and provide extra curricular opportunities, particularly at lunchtime where we can develop the physical activity of a large number of children.

of children each week take up this offer. To engage pupils to choose activities at playtimes

Develop the role of the Young Leader in our school – these young people will lead and engage younger children in our school community to participate in different physical activities at Lunchtime. Create a timetable of activities and young leaders to cover each lunchtime.

The use of Young Leaders at Lunchtime has enabled greater diversity in the amount of activities we can offer at lunchtimes and this has had a positive effect on behaviour and the enjoyment of the children during their lunch break.

Young Leaders are now fully integrated into the ethos of the school. New training opportunities to be taken up next year to ensure that this continues.

To engage more vulnerable pupils to engage in active lifestyles

Participation in Change 4 Life programme each half term. Children will be discussed at staff meetings to choose who to invite. Look at children’s abilities and assessment from PE lessons, lack of participation in other clubs and overall level of activity.

Leighton/ Linslade School Sports Partnership (LLSSP) (£3750)

Change for Life has had another successful year, supporting vulnerable children. PE assessments were used to support the development of basic skills and we also identified children who had not attended other physical activities out of school. Three clubs ran throughout the year and different children were chosen each time.

Change for Life now fully integrated into the school. Vulnerable children have now had opportunities to complete physical activities. Continue with the Change for Life format to continue to ensure vulnerable children participate in physical activity.

Indicator 2: The whole school profile of PEPhysical education is education through physical activity: its goal is the development of the individual as a whole, not just their physical development or their proficiency in specific sports.Through physical education in Lower school we aim to provide young people with access to physical activity for life as well as build the foundation for future participation and performance in sport.

The School Games Kite Mark is a nationally awarded mark for schools. It is designed to provide an award that demonstrates their level of engagement in the School Games Programme and school sport in general. The criteria will help the schools assess across Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

To raise the profile of PE across the school

Train Yr 4 Young Leaders. Use Young Leaders to develop Lunchtime physical activity.

From LLSSP Young Leaders have promoted and provided activities for younger children to participate in at Lunchtimes. Lunchtime staff have reported that lunchtimes are happier and there are more children participating in structured physical activity.

This is now fully integrated in Lunchtimes. Training next year for new cohort of year 4s.

Train 4 Bronze Level Ambassadors Bronze ambassadors have taken the lead across the school to promote physical activity and have continued to monitor and manage our young leaders. The Bronze ambassadors were also instrumental in supporting the PE subject lead to create a Sports Council in the school, whose aim is to raise the profile of PE further.

Continue this next year, to ensure new cohort of children continue the idea of sports leadership.Sports Council to continue into new school year – build on achievements already.

Maintain Gold Level award Support from LLCSSP and engagement with programmes offered has supported our application and ensured that we achieved the Gold Award again.

Continue to maintain this partnership to support Gold level Schools Games award.

Indicator 3: The Quality of teaching Physical Education and sport

The PE curriculum is diverse, providing pupils with the confidence to build on existing skills as well as to try new activities. Staff need to be confident and competent to deliver high quality lessons, recognizing the range of abilities and ways in which pupils learn.

LLSSP to deliver dance support to Year 1 and Year 3 teachers.

From Future Games

From LLSSP

Expertise and guidance in lessons has supported Teacher’s confidence and skills. This support has also provided ability for the teachers to observe and monitor children’s physical development.

These teachers’ skills will have developed. They will also have a topic related dance plan to use in future years.

Skills have now been uplevelled and teachers have a greater understanding and skill base for future years. Future Games coach to continue to support development of PE teaching and assessment.

Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of PE subject Coordinator

Coordinator to engage in CPD and annual conference

£150 Coordinator is up to date with subject and confident to lead PE across the school. Ideas from CPD and conference have been shared and implemented across the school.

Skills passed onto other members of staff and ideas introduced into the school. Continue next year.

Indicator 4: The provision of sports and activities offered to all pupils

A high quality PE programme will develop physical literacy and allow children to learn about themselves, the importance of a healthy lifestyle, self-expression and concepts such as fair play and respect. PE also contributes to the development of a range of important cognitive skills such as

decision making and analysis, and social skills such as teamwork, communication and leadership.

A good competitive school sport programme includes regular club participation opportunities where children can learn more about specific sports, receive age-appropriate coaching and practice their skills (after School Club) before attending competitions.

Broader experience of a range of activities

Annual Overview plans created last year will be used to provide a broad and wide range of sports and activities.Extra curricular plans are created at the beginning of the year, a broad range of activities for each Key Stage will be timetabled.

A range of PE activities and sports are offered over a 2 year cycle as part of the planning for PE.

There is a wider range of extra curricular activities, for a wider number of children.

These two areas are now embedded and will continue to support development next year.

Education Dance Group to provide inspirational dance lesson to each year group in June

£559 (from additional school funds)

Staff and pupils were inspired. Use of these ideas next year when planning dance activities.

Future Games Coach and School Staff provide sports enrichment clubs

From Future Games

There is an increased number and variety of enrichment clubs on offer to all pupils – including 2 lunchtime clubs and 2 after school clubs per week. The range has included Future Sports, Football, Tag Rugby, Tri Golf, Athletics, Hockey, Cricket, Rounders, Gymnastics, Dance.

Range of clubs to continue to grow in number and variety next year due to this good work.

Indicator 5: Competitive school sportsAll children enjoy being appropriately challenged and at a young age most are keen to explore what they are capable of. Competitive school sport for lower school children should be categorised on a focus by achieving one’s ‘personal best’ rather than being ‘the best’.

Engage lower children in personal challenges, allow them to practice and test their skills and personal competence, and small-sided games to encourage teamwork and a sense of how to play and succeed.
