Program OverviewAdmission Procedures And related Requirements

This program is designed to provide students with an introductory understanding of sport management and the various components that make up the sport industry. Course content mainly focuses on the applied aspects of sport management, and students will also become knowledgeable in current literature, both applied and research based.

The ability to take electives allows students to tailor their program towards their interests, such as business, recreation, or another discipline.

Degree RequirementsSport Management courses cover a range of approved content areas and focus on combining theoretical understanding with practical applications for various aspects of managing the sport industry. The core requirements consist of ten classes (30 credit hours).

Elective requirements give students the opportunity to focus on a particular area of the sport industry that interests them. There are courses specific to collegiate athletics, courses that focus on the broader industry and socio-cultural courses focusing on current issues in the industry as a whole. For the undergraduate Sport Management program, students must complete 15 credit hours of departmental electives, and 15 credit hours of electives that may come from courses outside the department.

Each student has the opportunity to complete a culminating practical experience allowing them to apply what they’ve learned in the real world. Experiences include part-time and full-time, volunteer and paid, and may occur almost anywhere. Practicum settings have included collegiate athletic departments , intramural departments, professional sport teams, professional sport leagues, private and public sector organizations, entrepreneurial endeavors and many more.

While the practicum is not required to graduate, it is encouraged so students can have real-world experience to add to their resumes and vitas. The practicum and volunteer experiences also give students the opportunity to network with sport industry professionals.

Career Opportunities The Bachelor of Science program in Sport Management provides students with the academic foundation necessary to pursue a graduate degree in sport management or to pursue an entry-level position in the sport industry. The program curriculum is continuously refined to meet industry standards promoted by the Council on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA).

The Sport Management undergraduate degree program is a Limited Access program. The department reviews applications submitted by March 1 for admission to the Fall term. Students are not admitted for the Spring or Summer terms. Students transferring to FSU from another institution must first submit an application for admission to the university and meet the minimum requirements mentioned below. A separate departmental application must be submitted to 1002 Tully Gym prior to the March 1 deadline. Department applications may be found on our website at www.coe.fsu.edu/sm .

Requirements for admission:

Note: Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Applicants must also provide transcripts with current GPA and a copy of their current class enrollment (transcripts pertaining to coursework completed at outside institutions must be official transcripts).

1. A minimum of 9 semester hours of pre-requisite coursework using the following course prefixes must be completed prior to formal admission: FIN, MAR, GEB, MAN, BUL, CGS, STA, ACG, REE, HFT, RMI, ECO, SDS, COM

2. Meet the general criteria for transfer into an FSU degree-granting program,

3. Complete Liberal Studies requirements or an A.A. degree with a grade of C- or higher in each freshman English and each basic mathematics course

4. Achieve a minimum overall 2.75 GPA (all attempted college work).
