Our History
The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC) is located in the rapidly growing sea change community of Hervey Bay and has become well known as a community meeting place. The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre was founded in 1989 as a community based initiative to provide help, friendship and support to the most disenfranchised people in the community. The emphasis of all of our activities is on people and the relief of issues and concerns that impede them from living a successful and happy life. HBNC develop and deliver programs and services in response to community need. Presently, the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre manages over 20 funded programs with over 75 staff and 360 volunteers that encompass aspects of aged and disability, family, child and youth services, multicultural and diversity and legal and professional service. The HBNC also self-funds a number of community programs including the Reconnect Youth Centre.
Mission Statement The Mission of the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre Inc. is to build a strong, cohesive and healthy community by developing and providing programs, activities and services that respond to the needs of the most disadvantaged and isolated people in the community.
About the Tour de Bay Charity Bike Ride The Rotary Club of Hervey Bay Sunrise and the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre invite the community to join the
‘Tour de Bay’ Charity Bike Ride to be held Sunday the 22 of September 2019. We are asking participants to raise more than a sweat, and join us in raising money in support of the Reconnect Youth Centre. Everyone is invited to put on their shoes or hop on their bike for a fun filled morning for the whole family. The route has been designed to cater to all levels of fitness:
The 5km Walk, Run, and Scoot to the Beach House and back to the Community Centre.
The 10 km Amazing Ride is an easy flat route for beginners, younger folk
and families
The 25 km Scenic Cycle will bring you past many of Hervey Bay’s beautiful sights
The 50 km Bruiser is a more challenging loop for the more experienced cyclists taking in some of Hervey Bay’s high country.
The 100km Centurion is only for the more experienced rider. A band of volunteers will support the cyclists’ efforts by providing water and healthy snacks at intervals along the route. The ride will finish at the Hervey Bay Community Centre where a community breakfast will be in full swing, ready to welcome our intrepid riders!

Why are we holding the Tour de Bay
Charity Bike Ride? The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre are seeking community support to raise funds for the Reconnect Youth Centre and Youth Mentoring Program. The Reconnect Youth Centre is located at 80 Main Street and houses the Reconnect youth homelessness program, Youth Empowerment Program and the Youth Mentoring program. The Reconnect Youth Centre focuses on reconnecting young people to the community through training and employment pathways as well as life skills and mentoring programs.
The centre has been open for two years and is now home to Impact Community Service – Employment First Aid
program and Integrated Family and Youth Services. The Youth Centre has also moved in The Fraser Coast Beacon
and Wolfpack Printing and Design to start a new social enterprise for a Community Magazine to create
employment and skills development for our young people as the Fraser Coast has one of the highest youth
unemployment rates in Queensland.
Last year, the Reconnect youth workers supported over 60 homeless youth and over 30 of these young people
became involved in resilience and life skills programs designed to prevent homelessness through family
reconciliation where possible.
The Youth Mentoring program is school-based which supports young people 7-17 years of age who are
experiencing difficulties at school and home and are at risk of disengaging with the education system. The Youth
Mentors are volunteers who assist young people to fully participate in the community in positive, constructive and
respectful ways by providing youth with support and guidance, through planned relationships through positive role
modeling. The Youth Mentors support young people by being a confidential person who can listen to issues and
concerns, help with self-development activities that build self-confidence and self-esteem and support the young
person to recognise their strengths and talents. The program has 39 Youth Mentors that deliver emotional support
in nine Fraser Coast schools and have successful outcomes with the youth including:
• less impulsive and reactive- taking time to think & reflect
• calmer
• happier
• increased self-confidence & esteem
• improved attendance
• improved social interactions
• increased work completion
• more focused
• more engaged at school
• increased class participation
overall improved behaviours
The Tour de Bay raises over $30,000 per year to support these vital programs that are self-funded by the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre and we hope to continue to support the young people of the Fraser Coast.
