Ageing Globally – Ageing Locally 2
nd- 3
rd November 2011
Croke Park Conference Centre, Dublin, Ireland
Planning for all our futures Pension reform, later retirement, longer but often unhealthier lives, changing family structures, new models of welfare
and care: across the world today, governments, businesses and civic society are searching for policies and answers in
these areas to get to grips with one of the most profound social transformations in history – population ageing.
A major international conference, "Ageing Globally – Ageing Locally", taking place on the 2nd & 3rd November 2011,
hosted by the Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland (CARDI) will address key issues arising from this
global phenomenon.
By 2050, the world’s population of over 60 years old is forecast to reach 2 billion. This shift will deeply impact on the
personal, social and economic spheres of every society in the 21st Century. How successfully this transition is managed
around the world will shape everyone’s experience of ageing in our increasingly interconnected world.
Each country must find its own answer to challenges brought by ageing populations. However, we can learn from each
other and this conference will focus on exchanging ideas, successful strategies and practices.
Featuring a host of international experts as well as leading researchers and professionals from the ageing sector in the
island of Ireland, this event will explore a number of issues including how different countries address challenges and
opportunities of population ageing, why global ageing matters to us all, and how policy makers, business and service
providers can best plan for changing demographics.
Who should attend this conference?
This event will promote the value and role of ageing-related research specifically for policy and practice. It has been
designed to appeal to a range of stakeholders, including policy makers, health, housing and social services providers,
industry, voluntary and community organisations, researchers with an interest in ageing, carers and older people.

CARDI is a not for profit organisation developed by leaders from the ageing field across Ireland (North and
South) including age focused researchers, academics, statutory, voluntary and community sector
representatives with support from The Atlantic Philanthropies. It is overseen by a Steering Group and hosted
by the Institute of Public Health in Ireland.
Mission
To advocate for and advance the ageing research agenda by identifying, coordinating, stimulating, and
communicating strategic research on ageing and older people as a means to improve the lives of older people
in Ireland (North and South) especially those who are disadvantaged.
Purpose
CARDI has been established to provide a mechanism for greater collaboration among age researchers, for
wider dissemination of ageing research information and to advance a research agenda relevant to the needs of
older people in Ireland (North and South). Operating at a strategic level and in an advisory capacity, CARDI will
focus on promoting research cooperation across sectors and disciplines and will concentrate on influencing the
strategic direction of research into older people and ageing in Ireland. It has been strategically positioned
around the following four areas:
• Identifying and establishing ageing research priorities relevant to policy and practice in Ireland (North and
South);
• Promoting greater collaboration and cooperation on ageing research in order to build an ageing research
community in Ireland (North and South);
• Stimulating research in priority areas that can inform policy and practice relating to ageing and older
people in Ireland (North and South);
• Communicating strategic research issues on ageing to raise the profile of ageing research in Ireland (North
and South) and its role in informing policy and practice.
This work has been made possible through funding by Atlantic Philanthropies, augmented by grants from the
Department of Health and Children in Dublin and the Research and Development Office for Health and Social
Care, Northern Ireland and hosting by the Institute of Public Health in Ireland. Please see www.cardi.ie.
