Dear Student,

Welcome to the Law Fair 2018! This fair is run by the Careers Service (in partnership with the School of Law), and this booklet gives you an introduction to the organisations that are attending the fair to meet you today.

The fair is a perfect opportunity for you to meet with prospective employers, ask questions to find out more about the companies and their opportunities, and to hone your networking skills. Employers appreciate receiving applications that demonstrate a good understanding of their business and your motivation to work there, so the information you gather today can help you to create really strong, tailored applications. You will also benefit from understanding more about the culture of the organisations here today and whether they seem like a good fit with your career aspirations.

This fair is just one of many employer events organised by the Careers Service throughout the academic year. Keep an eye out for other opportunities to meet with potential employers throughout the year by logging on to the MyCareer portal, which you can access through our website at www.tcd.ie/careers.

Finally, remember we are here to help with career decision making, job applications and interviews throughout the year. Simply go to our website to access lots of advice, or log on to MyCareer via our website to book a one-to-one appointment with the Careers Consultant for your School.

Company Name:

Cúirt Bhreithiúnais an Aontais Eorpaigh - Ard-Stiúrthóireacht an Ilteangachais Court of Justice of the European Union, Directorate-General for Multilingualism

Summary of Business:

The Court, which has its seat in Luxembourg, is the judicial authority of the European Union and, in cooperation with the courts and tribunals of the Member States, it ensures the uniform application and interpretation of EU law. As each Member State has its own language and specific legal system, the Court of Justice of the European Union is a multilingual institution with a legal translation service and an interpretation service.

Graduate & Internship Opportunities

The Court is seeking to recruit Dlítheangeolaithe le Gaeilge (Irish language lawyer-linguists), English language lawyer-linguists and English language Interpreters.

EU lawyer-linguists ensure that all EU legal texts have the same meaning in every European language. They are lawyers with outstanding linguistic abilities, who are experienced in drafting, checking and revising legal texts. Lawyer-linguists must be able to discern precisely what EU legal texts intend to convey, and faithfully reflect that intention in their own language.

An interpreter works in real time making communication possible between the speaker and the person hearing the oral submissions, faithfully conveying a message expressed orally in a language other than that of the speaker.

Every year, the Court offers a number of paid traineeships of a duration of five months. Traineeships are undertaken in different services throughout the Court including at the Directorate-General for Multilingualism.

Job opportunities in other Services of the Court (e.g, as Referendaires or as Legal administrators in a registry or in the fields of library services, research and documentation) are listed on the Court's website.

Method of Application:

The vast majority of staff in the Court's services are recruited from the reserve lists of open competitions organised by the European Personnel Selection Office (EPSO).

Temporary staff are also recruited by the Court. These posts are listed on the Court's website, applicants can apply for these positions through the website.

Closing Date for Applications:

No closing date has been set for the lawyer-linguist roles. There are two traineeship periods: from 1 March to 31 July (applications to be made between 1 July and 15 September of each year) and from 1 October to 28 February (applications to be made between 1 February and 15 April of each year).

Target Groups (JS, SS, PG):

We would like to talk to law students from every level. Many lawyer-linguists working at the Court have undergraduate degrees in different disciplines as well as the required legal qualification. Applicants for the lawyer-linguist positions must satisfy the following minimum requirements: Have successfully completed a suitable course in law (i.e. hold a degree in law or its equivalent awarded in the United Kingdom or Ireland) or have qualified as a barrister, advocate or solicitor in the United Kingdom or Ireland. Have a perfect command of English or Irish. Have a thorough knowledge of French. Have a satisfactory knowledge of a third official language of the European Union. Have an interest in legal translation. Knowledge of other official languages of the European Union and relevant professional experience would be an advantage.
