NWORLD BOOK DAY – A READING REVOLUTION:

THANK YOU for your ongoing support of this vital industry-wide campaign – it couldn’t happen without you.

• World Book Day is a registered charity, and an extraordinary collaboration between publishers and booksellers.

• Please share this pack with your team(s) so that they are aware of the vital role they play as key stakeholders in this enormous celebration of books and reading for pleasure, which makes a huge impact by getting books into the hands of children and young people who may not already have them.

• Our mission as a charity is to offer every child and young person the opportunity to read and love books and encourage them to discover the power of reading for pleasure, by providing them with the opportunityto have a book of their own.

• World Book Day is the biggest celebration of books, reading, authors and illustrators of its kind, for children and young people of all ages – from toddler to teen – in the UK and Ireland.

• We are sponsored by National Book Tokens and funded by publishers and booksellers.

• During World Book Day month (27 February – 29 March), children and young people are encouraged to visit their local bookshop, where they can exchange their £1 (€1.50) token for a free book from a range of fifteen bespoke books, or they can use it to get £1 off a book costing £2.99 (€3.99) or more.

• To find out more about the work we do, visit worldbookday.com/about.

• In 2020 World Book Day will ask everyone to SHARE A MILLION STORIES to encourage parents and children to develop new reading behaviours and share

WORLD BOOK DAY’S IMPACT AND SHARING STORIES: DID YOU KNOW? • Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future

success – more than their family circumstances, more than their parents’ educational background or their income. T H E O R G A N I S AT I O N FO R E C O N O M I C C O -O P E R AT I O N & D E V E L O P M E N T

• For 1 in 4 children in the UK, the book they choose with their £1 World Book Day token is the first book they will ever own (and this rises to 1 in 3 amongst children receiving free school meals). N AT I O N A L L I T E R A C Y T R U S T A N N U A L L I T E R A C Y S U R V E Y, 2016

• Reading for pleasure is in decline: only 29% of 0-13s read for pleasure daily (down from 30% in 2017). C H I L D R E N ’ S R E A D I N G FO R P L E A S U R E : T R E N D S A N D C H A L L E N G E S , E G M O N T, 2019

• The number of parents sharing stories with their children is also in steep decline: only 56% of 3-4-year-olds are read to daily or nearly every day (69% in 2013).

• Fewer than 19% of 8-10-year-olds are read to daily or nearly every day (down from 25%). U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E C H I L D R E N ’ S B O O K C O N S U M E R , N I E L S E N , 2018

BOOKING AN AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR EVENT If you are still looking for an author or illustrator for a school/bookshop event you can:

• Contact the PR department of children’s publishers

• Contact Authors Aloud authorsalouduk.co.uk. If you recommend Authors Aloud to schools, ask them to say that the recommendation came from you.

Authors and illustrators get very booked up throughout World Book Day month so you can, of course, encourage schools to book author/illustrator events at other times throughout the year, as any time is a good time for children and young people to experience these inspiring visits!

SHARE A STORY: HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED AND CELEBRATE WORLD BOOK DAY IN YOUR BOOKSHOP

We’d love you to get involved and help us to celebrate the bookiest day of the year. The key theme for World Book Day 2020 is SHARE A STORY, to encourage as many adults and children as possible to share stories for at least 10 minutes every day.

BEFORE WORLD BOOK DAY• Create a World Book Day window display around your favourite

stories to share or using Rob Biddulph’s brilliant bookmark artwork available at worldbookday.com

• Organise a teacher’s evening with local schools, to discuss what you can do throughout the month to celebrate World Book Day.

• Invite teachers to bring their classes in to your shop to redeem their book tokens, and start taking bookings.

• Organise World Book Day Share a Story sessions.

• Browse the World Book Day website for a huge range of resources, ideas and inspiration for your Share a Story events worldbookday.com

• Share a Million Stories – this year, we’re mobilising everyone to SHARE A MILLION STORIES THROUGHOUT WORLD BOOK DAY MONTH, to encourage parents and children to develop new reading behaviours. Register to log your shop’s story shares worldbookday.com/share-a-million-stories, set a target for your shop and story shares and create your own Share-o-meter to display prominently instore.

DURING WORLD BOOK DAY MONTH (27 February – 29 March)• Make sure all staff have read this pack and understand what World Book Day is

and how it works.

• Create a ‘great books for sharing’ display featuring your staff’s recommendations of their favourite books to share.

• Organise Share a Story storytimes every weekend and/or encourage staff to read to children when they come into the shop – and make sure they count towards your Share a Million Stories total. SH

POST WORLD BOOK DAY• Share your success! Collate the number of tokens you have redeemed and share on

social media.

• Share your feedback with World Book Day, to be fed into the evaluation and future planning for the campaign – positive comments, quotes, facts and figures, the impact it had on you/your shop, etc. This can be sent to [email protected]

• If you have leftover World Book Day books, you could: • create an ‘In case you missed it’ display.• donate them to local schools, education centres, prisons, food banks, detention

centres, etc.• use them for goodie bags or as extra treats.• add them to your selection so that everyone who visits your shop can afford

a book.• keep them to broaden your range next year.

It’s important to share stories because you make connections with other people. Reading is an infectious joy.’ Cressida Cowell, Waterstones Children’s Laureate

• Keep your Share a Million Stories totaliser up-to-date and adding your shares to your profile. Add to it every time a parent or bookseller shares a story in the shop.

• Use your newsletter to parents and schools to: • share positive data about why World Book Day and Share a Story matter

– see p. 2 & 3.• share your programme of events.• remind them to redeem their book tokens and check out the resources at

worldbookday.com.• encourage them to register for Share a Million Stories.

• Get involved on social media: • share photos, story-sharing, windows, displays, your share-o-meter, author visits,

etc. Whatever book-themed content you’re sharing, don’t forget to use @WorldBookDayUK and tag us too – see details on p. 8.

• SHOW AND SHARE From 27 February, create a list or photo of your favourite 5 stories to share to put out on social media, and tag a school, bookshop, library or individual and ask them to do the same. Let’s get those reading recommendations going!

• Keep any tokens that you redeem, so you can feed back your numbers to the Booksellers Association, to be added to the national total of redemptions – this is a key impact statistic for the success of World Book Day.

There’s always a special buzz around our shops on World Book Day, with crocodiles of Key Stage 1 children filing into the kids’ sections, many of them stepping into a bookshop for the first time. “ “ “World Book Day is a wonderful celebration of current authors and illustrators that engages children, parents, teachers and schools in a month-long spring-time party. Anyone can participate if they have access to the printed word. So many children who have never owned a book before can choose from a delicious range of talent. This is an amazing charity that transforms lives.

Through offering free storytelling sessions for local schools, all the children knew where to bring their £1 book tokens last year, which led to us having a second Christmas in March! World Book Day benefits children, authors, illustrators, booksellers – it is an amazing initiative.
