Welcome

Proceeds of Lavender sales will benefit Make a Wish, so come buy some lavender that will make

your old car actually smell great. Tour route and times to be announced later. Thanks in advance

to the folks of Long Dog Lavender Farm.

Wanted: Librarian The club has acquired a large number of tech manuals, how-to books, and

books that explain which Lucas parts might fit what. The books are currently in Dave's storage unit

and are being rough sorted by make. We will need help to catalog what we've got and determine a

sign-out or means to make these available as they move to a permanent home. Also if anyone has

some small bookcases or shelving sets that would help as well. Dave says he can give you four or

five boxes at a time if you want to sort and label.

Valley Car Club Counsel: There is a valley wide organization of car clubs that meets first Tues-

day of the month at Fuddruckers. Anyone got time to go? You'll learn about every car show, event,

and all sorts of other car related stuff going on in the neighborhood.

British Car Week: May 25-31, Go out and drive your Little British Car or maybe wax it up, fill up

the oil again and run it around the block. How about a big turn out for Wednesday nite drive?

Looks like a busy summer. Safe driving to you all!

Here at the IBCC we are getting a rush of letters regarding Summer Tour 2013 so we decided to print the letters and our

responses.

To the editor: I just decided I will come to Summer Tour 2013. Can I still register and get a hotel room? Rod N.

Yes, Rod, you can still register for this year’s summer tour. Please see the registration form at the IBCC website

and in this newsletter. As for a hotel room, there probably are a few rooms left at the Best Western Sunridge Inn (1-800-

223-2368) or the Always Welcome Inn (541-523-3431). The hotel advised us that check-in is at 3 PM, however,

many rooms will be ready as early as noon, and we can secure your luggage if you wish to drop your gear and

see what Baker City has to offer!

To the editor: Will I have time to visit any of the clubs and brewpubs in Baker City? Terry T.

Terry, there is “free time” on Friday afternoon and all day Sunday. The Summer Tour registration desk at the Best

Western will open at 2 PM. In that packet will be information on things to see and do in Baker City. For example, there is

a walking tour of downtown Baker City that will take you right by the local brewpub. In addition, the Oregon Trail Interpre-

tive Center and Baker Heritage Museum are good places to visit (if you plan to visit the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center,

please allow 2 hours in your schedule). One cautionary note…the Baker City police have a well earned reputation for pull-

ing over drivers traveling from downtown to the I-84 hotels such as the Best Western. The IBCC editorial staff recom-

mends that you let Charlie do the late night driving.

To the editor: What is all this talk about a train trip? Nancy O.

Nancy, as part of your Summer Tour registration payment, there is a 1-½ hour round trip train ride on the Sump-

ter Valley Railroad. Beginning at 8 AM Saturday morning, groups of cars will be released from the hotel to travel to McEw-

en, about 23 miles away, our departure point for the railroad trip. The train, powered by a steam locomotive, leaves at 10

AM sharp for the 45-minute trip to Sumpter. We get our lunches at the Sumpter Depot and then have 1-¼ hours to ex-

plore town. The train leaves Sumpter at noon for the 45-minute return trip to McEwen. There are depot personnel at

McEwen to watch over our cars while we are gone.

To the editor: I have heard that we will not have a car show at this year’s Summer Tour. Is that true? Paul M.

Paul, it is true that on Saturday, there will not be a parked car show as we had the last two years in McCall. This

year, we are having a “traveling car show”. After the train ride, we will be driving a 110-mile loop ride over Dooley Moun-

tain. You will be able to spend a fun afternoon with other British car owners and see some of the most beautiful scenery

in eastern Oregon while experiencing the very curvy Dooley Mountain Road. As for a car show, we are working with the

Best Western to save a portion of their space for a British car parking area. On Friday afternoon and evening, there will be

time to mix and mingle and take a good look at this year’s group of cars.

Not having as much time as I should have taken to double check the tightness on every bolt, clamp, and fastener – I Shook

Out the Cobwebs Saturday morning in my endeavor to reach Glenn’s Ferry at about the same time as the Club.

The ‘backseat’ of the Midget had been inhabited by my daughter’s cat and only recently vacated -- Hailey and family had

lived with us for 6 months while getting their house set-up, and their animals remained at the farm while they got their yard

set. With no further competition from the cat, I pushed the Midget out into the driveway and gave it a good washing and

vacuuming. Then, expecting all to be good, I tried to start the car and the first spider dropped to the ground: the battery

was dead – like it real dead. Unbeknownst to me, my grandsons had been playing in the car (without permission) and had

turned the ignition switch to “on.”

Trip to buy a new battery….

To the editor: All the car drives, train rides and sightseeing is OK, but I like to party! When do we get to party during

Summer Tour? Charlie W.

Well, Charlie, there are several social events at this year’s Summer Tour. First, on Friday starting at 5:30 PM at

the Best Western, we have the opening reception. This year, Summer Tour is having a gathering in the Blue Mountain

Room at the Best Western Sunridge Inn. People are asked to bring their favorite beverage. Light munchies will be provid-

ed so this is one time to party time. Dinner Friday night is open so you may want to try one of Baker City’s restaurants.

On Saturday evening, there will be the Summer Tour 2013 banquet. The reception starts at 5:30 with a no-host bar and

dinner is at 6:30. Did you sign up for the Mexican or Barbeque dinner? After dinner, we have our awards and recogni-

tion ceremonies. Charlie, one word of caution from the IBCC editorial staff…even if Terry T. tells you it is OK to drive him

home, please call a taxi.

Gas up in Bliss and all seems well. Since I had checked oil at home, I did not check under the hood (a mistake I will no long-

er make). About 8 miles later and the downhill slide of Pioneer Road into King Hill, a BIG Spider falls out of a cobweb I had

not seen and a loose oil line clamp on the oil return line heats up, expands and allows oil to leak and leak profusely. Fortu-

nately, I got the engine shut down.

I call back to the farm, Barry sets out to pull me if necessary. With my handy dandy Craftsman tool set, I find the problem,

reposition the oil line, then reset and tighten the heck out of the clamp. I have enough oil in the boot (this was a ‘shake out

the cobweb’ run – got to be prepared) and after topping up oil and cleaning up the majority of surface oil, the car starts. Oil

pressure good, no leaking, all is apparently good. But I’m headed home -- not toward Glenn’s Ferry.

I meet Barry just outside of Hagerman and he follows me back to the farm. Barry notes there is no smoke, no dripping oil, no

blue smoke and the car sounds good.

Engine damage? I don’t know – the car started first try this morning; oil pressure is good, no additional leaks. It appears I

dodged a bullet and my little car is OK. Now I need to clean up the rest of the oil.

Thanks for setting up the drive and luncheon even though I couldn’t attend. I hope all other attendees were able to make

the drive without incident. For me and the ’65, the drive lived up to its name.

Thanks again, Don Campbell ’65 MG Midget
