CRAIG’S CORNER....Hi! I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself.

I am taking on a new role in the school this year, as the Christian Pastoral Support Worker (CPSW), a position formerly known as a school chaplain.

I am here to be a support for the students, working alongside those who need extra support and helping to develop social skills and wellbeing of students.

In the first few weeks I am primarily visiting classes and meeting with students to build relationships.

Shortly I will be running some lunchtime activities and going into classes to help with the schools wellbeing programme.

A bit about me: I am a long-distance runner and will be running my first marathon later this year. I lived in Africa for 4½ years, in South Sudan. I worked there as a volunteer for a mission organisation teaching and doing logistics in a remote community. As well as working as a CPSW I am studying ministry and would like to go in to teaching in the future.

I look forward to working with all the students and school community throughout this year.

Regards,

CRAIG KNOWLESCPSW

We are approaching mid term and the business of the term is well under way.

School Events: A successful Splash Day for the Middle School has supported students new to the school to feel more comfortable & build relationships with staff and peers.

Our R to 6 students have benefitted from “Brainstorm” performers who reinforced the appropriate ways students should engage with each other ....with respect and no put downs.

Governing Council: A successful AGM convened on the 12th February. The 2013 Governing Council is as follows:C h a i r p e r s o n : S a ra h Ca l d we l l Deputy Chair & Minute Secretary: Tania HucksteppT r e a s u r e r : B r y n j a S v e n n a S e c r e t a r y : P a u l i n e D a l e Community Rep: Alex Coates Members: Medina Baluch, Selia Mrkic, Kathryn Wall, Angela Osborne.

Our parent involvement via our Governing Council and our Parents & Friends group puts our school in a good position to support initiatives to support student success. The Community Centre provides the infrastructure (physical & intellectual) for this to occur.

Year 12: Students should have begun work in earnest. Already the senior school team are meeting to discuss individual progress. Letters will be sent home if attendance and work commitment is inadequate.

Meeting deadlines and using staff support at school is critical for student success. The work load is greater than Year 11 and more complex. Students need to work steadily and smartly. Please phone the senior school team if you have concerns about your Yr 12 student.

Staffing: Secondary sport is being managed by Justine Higginson in 2013. Students have the opportunity to participate in a range of sporting activities.

The Wakakirri team lead by Kim Atkinson and Carlee Decelis have begun preparations with primary school students for the 2013 performance.

Students are fortunate to have a range of activities in which they can be involved.

School Update: Our enrolment is strong across the school. We have 1,200 students R to 12 with 400 students in R to 6. We also accommodate 130 Flexible Learning Options (FLO) who do most of their learning off site. Our community is strong and the partnerships we have with our families is critical if we want our students to be successful.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any concerns.

Sincerely,

DI GARWOODPRINCIPAL

NUNGA NEWS

MOBILE PHONES AND ELECTRONIC

EQUIPMENT AT RISKParents and Caregivers are reminded that phones and electronic equipment belonging to students that is brought to school is entirely at the student’s own risk. Families are reminded that phones, MP3 players, I Pods, I Pads etc MUST be turned off during lesson times. Students in breach of the mobile phone policy will have phones confiscated and returned to them at the end of the day in the front office

If a student needs to be contacted, please ring school on 8182 7222 and we will relay the message with haste if required.

Phones can be turned on again during recess and lunch break.

CHANGES TO STUDENT PERSONAL DETAILS

It case of important issues at school or serious sickness or injury to a child it is vital that we have up to date phone numbers and details of emergency contacts.

Too often we are faced with the dilemma of out of date phone numbers and contact details.

It is important that any changes to medical or family conditions be notified immediately.

Verification forms have been sent home, please sign and return to the school as soon as possible.

For any changes that occur during the year, forms are available at the front office to change these details with us.

NEW ABORIGINAL WELLBEING WORKER

We welcome Kylie Molinas, who works at Watto Purrunna Aboriginal Health Service. Kylie will be with Margy in the Wellbeing Hub to provide information about services available in the community and to provide support in accessing these services.

Along with Margy, Kylie works with students in relation to a range of different health and wellbeing issues and will be available on a drop-in basis as well as for appointments.

POWER CUP!

We have 10 students from years 10 & 11 undertaking the South Austral ian Aboriginal Spor ts Academy (SAASTA) Program also known as the Power Cup, on Thursdays at Roma Mitchell School.

This program is supported by key partners including the SAASTA, Port Adelaide Football Club, Santos and the Government of South Australia.

The work from these organisations is vital to the success of the Abor iginal Power Cup. The program enables students to achieve success in the SACE, access further employment and training oppor tunit ies and improve valuable life skills.

Our ACEO Steven Newchurch, will support the students to help them achieve success on this program.

Congratulations to all the students involved, keep up the hard work .

In 2011 Emily went to the Tri State competition and won the Junior Girls State Title in the 10m air pistol and came second in the 25m sports pistol.

In 2012 Emily went to the Tri state competition again in Adelaide, then the State titles in Maitland where Emily won two silver medals, only beaten by the Olympic r e p r e s e n t a t i v e H a y l e y Chapman.

Next for Emily is the National Competition in Perth in March in which Emily is the only Junior from South Australia who has been selected to go.
