KarmaThe Holy Scripture Bhagavad-Gita is one of the most important Hindu scriptures. It is revered as a sacred scripture of Hinduism, and considered as one of the most important philosophical classics of the world. The Bhagavad-Gita comprises 700 verses, and is a part of the Mahabharata. The teacher of the Bhagavad-Gita is Lord Krishna, Who is revered by Hindus as a manifestation of the Lord Himself, and is referred to within as Bhagavan—the Divine One. The content of the Gita is the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna taking place on the battlefield before the start of the Kurukshetra war. Responding to Arjuna’s confusion and moral dilemma, Krishna explains to Arjuna his duties as a warrior and prince and elaborates on different Yogic and Vedantic philosophies, with examples and analogies. The Holy Scripture contains 18 chapters and these chapters are divided into Yogas. Among these yogas, Karma Yoga is essentially Acting, or doing one’s duties in life as per his/her dharma, or duty, without concern of results - a sort of constant sacrifice of action to the Supreme. It is action done without thought of gain. In a more modern interpretation, it can be viewed as duty bound deeds done without letting the nature of the result affecting one’s actions. This wonderful magazine Karma is brought to the readers without expecting anything. As Lord Krishna answers Arjuna and clarifies ll the doubts, Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar answers to the Devotees and clarifies all the doubts of the devotees. The term “love” has lot of usages. The love between the deity and devotee, the love between an unknown male

and female, the love between the husband and wife, the love between parents and the children, the love between brothers and sisters and many more like these. Among all these, the love between an unknown male and female is considered as the most important in the regular life of an individual. This is called as “love affairs”. Some succeed in the love affairs and some are not. Some individual will not even have the guts to express the love to the counter part. Some will have the capacity to express the love affairs through an artistic and poetical way, but their situations and surroundings will not allow them to express the love even through the simple words. What are the reasons for all these problems?

The Atharva Veda tells in a simple word about the root cause of the problems in a single word. That is “Planets”. The planetary positions in an individual’s horoscope make an individual as a celebrity or pauper. The various houses and the strength of the planets in the horoscope/ Vedic astrology chart/ Janma Kundali of an individual are the main factors for making an individual to succeed in all walks of his/her life. According to Atharva Veda, the ascendant is for the characteristics of an individual. The second is for money, education and family life. The third is meant for the help. The fourth is meant for mother, brother and sister relationships, The fifthe is for kids. The sixth is for loans, debts and surgeries. The seventh is meant for the love affairs and spouse. The eighth is meant for the longevity of life. The ninth is meant for the father and parentaral assets. The tenth is meant for job, business, profession and career. The eleventh is meant for the profit and the twelfth is meant for all developments, downfalls and enjoyments of human life. To decide the success of the love affairs, the planetary positions and the second, seventh and twelfth houses are to be analyzed as per the specifications and techniques of Atharva Veda. The calculations mentioned in the Atharva Veda are the toughest while comparing to any other astrology calculating methods. Normally a house is viewed only in a few angles in the other procedures of astrology. But according to Atharva Veda each house is to be viewed in twelve different angles. As the horoscope consists of twelve houses, the entire horoscope is to be viewed for 144 angles.

Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar is the only living Siddhar and Atharva Vedic Swamiji in the entire western countries. He scrutinizes the horoscope as per the specifications of Atharva Veda and gets the exact strength and power of the planets. Then he suggests the rituals of Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devathas according to the need of the individual. The Atharva Veda Yaksha/ Yakshini devathas give the most

wonderful spiritual solutions and salvations of the problems.

The planet Venus is meant for the love affairs of an individual. The houses Rishabam (Taurus) and Thulam (Libra) are his own houses. He gets an exalted position in Meenam (Pisces) and he gets debilitated position in Kanya(Virgo). If the planet Venus is in any of his own houses

or in an exalted position, it is sure that the particular individual will

get a grand success in the love affairs and will have the spouse as per the expectations. That particular

person will lead a happy life as the most ancient couple Rathi and Manmatha. But even if the Venus is in his own house or in an exalted position but viewed by the malefic planets like Saturn and Raaghu, that concerned individual will not be able to find the proper love partner. If the planet Venus is viewed by the malefic planets like Kethu and Mercury, the individual will be a person attracted to the same sex. If the Venus is in a debilitated position, it is sure that the particular person will not have a peaceful family life and will never get success in the love affairs. These are all only hints or notes. It will vary according to the positions of the other planets also. To have a clear cut idea about the love affairs of an individual, it is the best thing to have a consultation from Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar.

The Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devatha mantras are considered as the most secret and sacred of all the mantras. These mantras are to be chanted only after getting the proper initiation from a Swamiji. By performing the rituals in a proper Atharva Vedic way to the proper Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devathas the problems are solved spiritually and the concerned individual will have a trouble free and smooth life. The human body is the combination of the five basic elements. These elements are earth, water, fire, sky and wind. As the super human power controls the entire universe, the mind controls the entire human body. The planets control the human body and the planets are controlled by the Yaksha/Yakshini devathas. These yaksha/yakshini devathas are controlled by the super human power, Almighty the God. The misplacement of the planets makes the human body weak or strong. If the body is weak, there are many physical remedies to strengthen the weaker body as stronger. Those physical remedies are to be carried out along with the spiritual remedies. They both join together and make the human body as stronger and fit one.

The condition of the human mind differs from the condition of the human body. There is an ancient saying as “The mind in its own place can make a hell of heaven or heaven of hell”. The Atharva Veda says as “Mana eva manushyaanaam kaaranam bandha mokshayoho”. The meaning of this verse is “the human mind is the only reason for the developments or for the deteriation of a human being”. The controlling of the mind is not easily achievable, but it is very easy by continuous practice. Only if the planetary positions in a human’s horoscope are good, then only the mind will be very clear. Only if the planetary positions of an individual’s horoscope are good, that individual can control the mind very easily. If not that particular individual will not be able to control the mind and due to that his entire life style will be out of control. What is the remedy for this?

According to the Hindu philosophies, there are four Vedas namely, Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda. Among these four Vedas, the Atharva Veda is the only Veda that deals with the application part of the God or Almighty’s super human power. All the other Vedas consist of Sutras (formulas or methods) but the Atharva Veda has only Thantras. The Sanskrit word Thantra means, the ways and means of coming out of the problems, using the spiritual guidelines and applications. Even though there a lot of Atharva Vedic Thantras, two Thantras play a vital role in solving the problems faced by a human being in a spiritual way. They are Rudra Yamala Thantra, also known as Shiv Rudra Thantra and the second one is Vishnu Darmottara Thantra also known as Vishnu Maalya Thantra. The diagnostic technique of the problems is Atharva Vedic Astrology. In these days, even in India, there are only a few persons practicing the Atharva Vedic Astrology. That too in the entire Western Countries, there is only one person practicing the Atharva Vedic astrology. That only person is Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar. He has mastered the art of Atharva Vedic astrology and does a lot of good turns for the development of the entire human race.

The ascendant, 5th and 9th houses of an individual’s horoscope play a vital role in deciding the mental strength of an individual. The planetary positions of the horoscope is to be analyzed as per the Atharva Vedic techniques. If the owner of the ascendant is weak and the owner of the fifth house is debilitated, it is sure that the particular individual will be in the position of being admitted to a mental asylum. If the same debilitated planet is focused or gets the vision of the planet Jupiter, that person will have a weak mind but will be able to control the mind. If the planet Jupiter himself is very weak, it is definite that the particular individual will not control the wavering mind. By that wavering mind that particular individual will do many illegal things and that particular individual will be punished by the law and enforcement authorities. If the owner of the eighth house is in a weaker position or debilitated but the owner of the ascendant is strong, that person will try to commit suicide but will be saved from death. If the ninth house owner is in an exalted position and the owner of the ascendant is also in an exalted position, it is sure that the particular individual will have a good command and control over the mind. The weak mind in the children will lead them for drug or alcohol addiction and their entire life will be ruined. The weak mind in the females will lead them to lead an immoral life. The weak mind of a male will make him as a criminal.

How to solve these problems? If the problem creating factors are visible to the naked eyes, we can easily resolve the problems physically. If the problem creating factors are invisible to the naked eyes, only the spiritual powers can help to solve the problems. How to identify those spiritual powers? First the horoscope is to be scrutinized by Swamiji Sri. Selvam Siddhar as per the specifications of Atharva Veda. Then the root cause of the problem will be found and the particular Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devathas are to be worshipped through the rituals for the period mentioned by Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar. Here another question arises? What is the different between a Pooja, prayer and rituals? The pooja is the most important part of a human’s life. It is the regular thanks giving for the Almighty God. The prayers are the humble most requests to the God. In these two methods, no spiritual healing or salvation of the problems are involved. But in the rituals only the spiritual healing and spiritual salvation of the problems are involves. So, by performing the rituals to the particular Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devathas, one can have the best spiritual salvations of the problems. Litigation Problems and spiritual salvations for the problems.

Litigation is one of the toughest words in the legal dictionary. The blessing of the Almighty is needed along with the power of arguments and the knowledge of law. There are many attorneys in this universe. But only a few are very famous. As such there are many human beings in this universe. But only a few of them get into the litigation troubles. What are the reasons for all these things? Even if we think very deeply, we cannot find the proper answers for these questions. However the Atharva Veda has foreseen all these things thousands of years back and has found the answers for these questions. The answer is planets.

What is the connection of planets to the normal walk of human life? The actions of the entire human race are controlled by the planets. The ascendant decides the capacity and character of the human being and the second place decides the power of speech. If the ascendant is occupied by the fearsome planets like Sun and Mars, the concerned individual will have the best leadership qualities and a great litigation attorney. Where as if the ascendant is occupied by the malefic planets like Saturn and Raaghu, definitely the concerned person will get into lot of litigation troubles. If the second house is occupied by the same malefic planets Saturn and Raaghu, the concerned individual will get into unwanted oral clashes. If the second house is occupied by the divine planet Jupiter we can easily say that the concerned individual will be an intellectual giant. There are a lot of other factors to decide the individual characteristics of an individual. How to ascertain the characters and qualities of an individual and how to find that the person will get into legal litigation problems? The only spiritual way is to scrutinize the horoscope in the specified ways of Atharva Veda. Atharva Veda is the only Veda that gives spiritual salvations for all kinds of problems. Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar zzis the only living Siddhar and the only Swamiji practicing the Atharva Vedic astrology in the entire western countries. He has got the fullest blessings of Lord Shiva, Vana Durga and Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devathas. He prepares and scrutinizes the

individual’s horoscope as per the techniques of Atharva Veda and gets the wonderful spiritual solutions and salvations of all kinds of the problems faced by an individual.

Before going deep into the spiritual salvation of the litigation problems, let us see what the meaning of litigation is. A lawsuit is a civil action brought before a court of law in which a plaintiff, a party who claims to have received damages from a defendant’s actions, seeks a legal or equitable remedy. The defendant is required to respond to the plaintiff’s complaint. If the plaintiff is successful, judgment will be given in the plaintiff’s favor, and a range of court orders may be issued to enforce a right, award damages, or impose an injunction to prevent an act or compel an act. A declaratory judgment may be issued to prevent future legal disputes. A lawsuit may involve dispute resolution of private law issues between individuals, business entities or non-profit organizations. A lawsuit may also enable the government to be treated as if it were a private party in a civil case, as plaintiff or defendant regarding an injury, or may provide the government with a civil cause of action to enforce certain laws. The conduct of a lawsuit is called litigation.

Someone will never enter the doorsteps of the court house for their entire life time. Someone will spend unnecessarily for the legal expenses. Somebody will be in the court house either as a defendant or plaintiff throughout their entire life time. What is the reason for all these happenings? According to Atharva Veda the planets are the only reason for all these kind of problems. The misplacement of the planets make one to suffer a lot with these kind of legal problems. That too the combination of the planets Sun and Saturn, Sun and Raaghu, Moon and Raaghu and Moon and Kethu make one to suffer much due to the litigations. The special Atharva Vedic Thantric Rituals to the Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devathas will get the wonderful spiritual salvations for the litigation problems faced by a common and normal individual. Before starting the ritual, the mantras are to be initiated by Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar and the rituals are to be performed with the utmost dedication and devotion to the Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devathas. The individuals can take part in the rituals either in person or through the telephone. By performing the rituals as prescribed, one can have the best spiritual salvations for the litigation problems faced by an individual. In the city of Benaras, religious capital of India, a painting competition was announced to be conducted for the boys and girls of age group 8 to 12 years. The competitors will be given three hours to expose their skills and the winner will be awarded with cash prize of One Thousand Rupees. The subject for the painting was to be announced at the hour of competition. This was advertised in all newspapers. This news reached a huge number of people in and around Benaras. This holy city rests on the bank of River “Ganges”. The long waited day brought several hundreds of painters together and they were provided with all necessary things such as paints, color, canvas and brushes. The title was announced just before the commencement of the competition, as “A woman fruit seller with basket of fruits and a stick”.

All the participants were busily running their imagination; the bell rang to start the competition. The boys and girls were busy sketching the drawings. It was an interesting hour of eagerness. The time was passing little by little. The artists were showing their talent. The painting took place. The first one was primer quoting on canvas. Then applying the reality started. The wet paint had got dry. All these matters were going on in order. The final touches for the true resemblance were done with all their skills. After the allotted time of three hours was over, the final bell rang. Seven judges had the collective responsibility to select and finalize the prize winner. The stages of comparisons, rejections and selections were with full swing. The participants were anxiously awaiting the results by gathering outside the main hall. Judges inspected each and finally selected two of the paintings. With both paintings on par with each other it was becoming tough for the judges to decide on a final winner. Since the two paintings look equally the best, One of the judges suggested to see the paintings in the open air instead of seeing the paintings under a roof, they should be tested outside the hall. Under open sunlight, the paintings

were brought outside in an open yard. As time was passing, a small bird happened to fly over. The bird flew closer to both of the two paintings. The fruits on one of the paintings looked so real, that the bird started biting the painting and made a hole on the fruit portion.

The Judges watched everything attentively and brought the paintings back to the auditorium. They collectively decided that the painting with the bird’s biting was the best painting of all. All competitors were welcomed back to the auditorium. The judges had announced their boy who painted the picture was called to the platform and the award of one thousand rupees was handed over to him.

Now, a boy of age eleven came to the stage and objected the decision of the seven judges and pleaded to give him a chance to submit his opinions. One of the judges asked him “Who are you to object our decision?” The boy told the furious judges in a polite manner “Sir, I am the person who submitted the other picture which you have rejected from awarding the prize”. Judge laughed and told “You saw how the bird mistook the fruits on the other painting as real fruits and tried to pierce it”. “Yes my learned judges, thank you for your explanation on the real fruit which means the mark was given to the reality”.

“Of course in the same sense only, we granted the prize to other boy”, commented the judges. “Sorry to interfere sir, but could you please repeat the title you have allotted for this competition?” the 11-year old boy asked. “A woman fruit seller with basket of fruits and a stick”, one of the judges instantly replied. “This title mainly has three objects - the woman, fruits in a basket, and a stick”, confirmed the boy.

Saying “yes, yes”, the judge appreciated the boy for his good understanding. As the boy continued,”the title has three important objects, each carrying equal weight. While, I aimed to score well in

all three objects, your learned teams of scholars have granted prize depending entirely on one subject, the fruit! What about the woman and the stick?”

This claim of the boy shocked all of them including the audience who were hearing this argument. Contrary to the sequence, one of the seven judges commented “a sensible argument to be considered. What more do you want to tell, my dear boy?” “Sir I am confident and sure my painting is closer to the reality” continued the boy, “in my painting the woman with a stick appeared so real that the bird realized, it would get a beating with the stick if it came closer.” The arguing judge claimed to prove the boy’s sense of reality.

The boy screened the portion of the woman and the stick on the painting with a white cloth, and kept the painting at the same place when it was tested. After about 15 minutes, some birds flew over the area. Seeing the painting, they flew near the painting and started piercing the fruits. While it looked strange and miraculous, the boy’s confidence in his art and proper concentration was praised by all the judges. While, the prize money has since been spent, the fame is still secured by this boy. The boy is none other than Ravi Varma – the great artist of India. His paintings in were exhibited in all dominated palaces and kingdoms of India during the British rule in India. The people called this artist, Raja Ravi Varma. He was a king by himself in the dominion of paintings.

An Important incident from

the life of a great Artist of India.

Lord Mahavishnu

According to the ancient Hindu scriptures this entire universe is controlled by three major Gods and they are called as “Holy Trinity”. They are Lord Brahma, Lord Mahavishnu and Lord Shiva. Lord Brahma is the first member of the Hindu Trinity. He takes care of the production of the living beings of the entire universe. Lord Mahavishnu is the second member of the Hindu Trinity. He takes care of the protection of the entire living beings of this entire universe. Lord Shiva is the third member of the Hindu Trinity and he takes care of the destruction for new construction. In this issue we will see a little bit about Lord Mahavishnu.

He is said to be the Preserver/Sustainer of life, especially because of His association with the principles of order, righteousness, and dharma (truth/nobility).Whenever these principles are threatened, and religion is endangered on the earth, He comes out of His transcendence to assume an earthly form, and incarnates on the earth to restore the principles, and save His devotees. He takes on an earthly form and becomes incarnated. He is also known as Hari, the remover of sorrow, and Narayanan. He is described having a dark color representing the passive and formless ether, a great quality for a pervading God.

There are a total of ten incarnations (avatars) of Lord Mahavishnu. These include a fish (Matsya), tortoise (Kurma), boar (Varaha), man-lion (Narasimha), dwarf (Vaman), Parasuram, Rama (of Ramayana), Krishna, Buddha and Kalki. Among all these avatar Kalki is yet to come. Normally Lord Mahavishnu is seen with four hands.

The top right hand holds a discus (chakra) which is a reminder of the wheel of time, and to lead a good life. This chakra is called as “Sudarshan”. The top left hand holds the conch shell (sankha) indicating spread of the divine sound “Om”. This conch is called as Panchajanyam”. The second right hand holds a lotus (Padma) which is an example of glorious existence and the second left hand holds a mace (gadha) indicating the power and punishing capacity of the Lord if discipline is broken. This Gadha is called as “Kowmodhaki”.

Out of his navel blossoms a lotus which holds Brahma, the God of Creation whose responsibilities Vishnu has assumed. His vehicle is Garuda, the swift flying bird, which can spread the Vedic knowledge with great courage. He is often depicted reclining on a coiled and many headed cobra (sheshnag) which rests on the cosmic waters. This represents the sleeping Universe. Lord Vishnu’s consort is Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth.

Lord Vishnu’s most celebrated incarnations are Rama and Krishna. That is why, in India, Rama and Krishna are the most worshipped entities, people are not worshipping multiple Gods, but different forms and expansions of the same God. The simple mantra to get his blessings is “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”. Any thing in the world is possible by worshipping Lord Mahavishnu, who sustains the life in world. Enchanting this mantra saves a devotee from many troubles. It bestows the devotee with prosperity, peace, wealth etc. The below mentioned sloka is one of the best mantras to get the auspicious blessings of Lord Mahavishnu. This sloka reveals the 16 different names of Vishnu that one must chant when doing different activities in one’s life.

Atharva Vedic Vastu for our Bedrooms: Here I have explained the Vastu Guidelines for Master Bedroom, Children’s Bedroom and Guest Bedroom. Since Vastu is a science, there is logic and reasoning behind every guideline. As an Atharva Vedic scholar and Swamiji, I have attempted to explain these guidelines rationally and scientifically, so that you can decide what you want to follow and what you don’t.

WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES REGARDING POSITION OF BEDROOMS?

• The main bedrooms should be in the South: The Scientific Reason - The North is meant for the Living room and entertaining guests. Hence a private space like a Bedroom should be located far from the front and ideally, that is the South.

• Avoid bedrooms in the North-East: The Scientific Reason- All the corners other than the North-East, are reserved for different rooms like Bedrooms, Bathrooms, Living room and Kitchen. Hence the only corner left, which is away from the noisy areas like the Kitchen and back, and is engulfed with morning sunlight, is the North-East which is ideally suited and hence reserved for a meditation room or Puja room.

• Avoid bedrooms in the middle of the house: The Scientific Reason – It is obvious that a room in the centre of the house will be used for movement and accessing all the other rooms, and hence a Bedroom that requires privacy and quiet, cannot be placed here.

• Avoid bedrooms above the Car porch/Garage : The Scientific Reason - The fumes from the kitchen and the car exhaust that rise up, can be a nuisance and not good for the health of the inmates of the Bedroom.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL LOCATION OF A MASTER BEDROOM ACCORDING TO VASTU?• The Mater bedroom should be in the South-West: If there is more than one floor, the Master Bedroom should be on the upper floor, in the South-West corner. This room should never be used

as a bedroom for young children, as they will try to dominate. The Scientific Reason- In ancient times, the main wealth of the inmates was agricultural produce and this was stored in granaries behind

the house. The ideal location for these granaries was the South-West corner, because the South-West heat and the hot S-W summer wind kept the produce dry and free from moisture. Hence the Master Bedroom was preferred in the South-West, closer to the granaries to guard them from thieves. So also, this was not preferred for a Children’s Bedroom.

• Avoid the Master bedroom in the South-East: The Scientific Reason - In the olden days, when the cooking was done on open ovens, and the combustible building materials were prone to catch fire due to the hot S-W summer wind, the kitchen was not allowed in the South-West corner and the North-East corners. Hence, the South-East corner or North-West corner were reserved for the Kitchen.

WHAT IS THE BEST POSITION OF A GUEST BEDROOM IN VASTU?• The Guest Bedroom should be in the North-West: This corner represents Vayu or movement which implies that Guests who sleep in this bedroom will not stay for long and get going on their way. The Scientific Reason- A Bedroom in the North side is preferable for guests as it is closer to the living room and the front of the house. At the same time, it is away from the back of the house and the family members have their privacy. The northern Bedrooms also have the advantage of getting constant light from the North.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL LOCATION OF A CHILDREN’S BEDROOM ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA?• The children’s bedroom should be in the East or West side: The Scientific Reason - The West bedroom has the advantage of being bright and well lit in the evenings due to the West sunrays. Hence it is a good location for the Children’s Bedroom because they use it a lot in the evening for their studies after school and play. The East bedrooms have the advantage of being well lit in the mornings.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL SHAPE FOR A BEDROOM?• The bedroom should be square or rectangle in shape: The Scientific Reason- The rectangle or square shape is

the best shape for placing rectangular cots and other furniture, without wasting any space.

WHAT IS THE BEST DIRECTION FOR SLEEPING IN A BEDROOM, ACCORDING TO VASTU SHASTRA?• Avoid sleeping with head in the North: In fact only a dead body is kept with the head in the North and the feet pointing towards the South. The Scientific Reason- The blood in the body contains

iron, making the body magnetic with the positive polarity in the head. Hence the head represents the North pole while the feet are the South pole of the body. When you sleep with your head to the North, these two positive polarities

repel each other, disrupting the flow of blood and affecting your sleep and health. Hence one should never sleep with the head in the North.

• However, Vastu allows sleeping with the head in the other three directions. The effects of sleeping with the head in different directions is described below:

• Head in the East: East is the direction of knowledge and enlightenment. Sleeping with the head in the East increases knowledge and increases a liking for spiritualism. For this reason, children should always sleep with their head in the east.

• Head in the West: Sleeping with one’s head in the West is good for people who do not permanently reside in the house, like guests and married daughters, in their parents’ house.

• Head in the South: South is the best direction for sleeping. Sleeping with one’s head in the South brings happiness and sound sleep.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL POSITION OF A BED ACCORDING TO VASTU?

• Avoid sleeping near sharp corners of columns etc: They should be camouflaged with plants or rounded off. The Scientific Reason - The sharp corners can cause damage to the furniture if accidentally

pushed against them. Also they can hurt you when you move around.

• Avoid sleeping under beams or slanted ceilings: The remedy is to create a false ceiling. The Scientific Reason – A beam or slanting roof above the bed, can psychologically feel like a weight on you, as you lie down looking up at the ceiling.

• Keep the beds 2″ away from the walls: The Scientific Reason – To allow for the free flow of air all around and under the bed, thus creating good ventilation.

• Avoid the bed directly opposite the door: But the bed should be placed in a position where the occupants can see anyone coming into the rooms. The scientific reason - A bed is normally about 5.7 or 6 feet in length and if placed bang opposite the door, can psychologically appear to be an obstacle as you enter the room.

WHAT ARE THE VASTU GUIDELINES FOR THE DOOR AND WINDOWS IN A BEDROOM?

• The door to the Bedroom should open 90 degrees: A door that cannot open fully will limit the flow of opportunities. The Scientific Reason - Whenever you enter any room, it is important that the door opens wide as otherwise it can be a struggle to get into the room especially if you have a child or something in your hands.

• The door should be in the East, West or North: Avoid fixing doors in the South-West of a bedroom. The Scientific Reason – The South-West corner of the bedroom is reserved for the safe and wardrobes. Hence it is better to keep the door away from this corner.

• The larger windows should be in the East or North: And smaller windows in the West is ideal. The Scientific Reason - The constant light from the North and the morning light from the East are very essential to brighten and aerate the bedroom. Smaller windows to the West will allow for cross-ventilation.

WHAT ARE THE VASTU PRINCIPLES FOR ARRANGEMENT OF FURNITURE IN THE BEDROOM?• The safe should be in the South-West, opening towards North: The Scientific Reason – The heavy stuff is preferred in the South or West sides to serve as a buffer to the hot evening sunlight. Since the constant light is from the North, you can see clearly into the Safe if it opens towards the North.

• Keep some open space in the North-East: The Scientific Reason - The Constant and beneficial sunlight from the East and North should engulf the whole room and not get blocked by heavy furniture.

• Keep things that make you happy in front of the Bedroom door: The Scientific Reason - Upon entering, your bedroom, the first thing yo u see should be something that gives you the feeling of peace and serenity such as a photograph, a favorite quote or even flowers that enhance these positive feelings. Keep objects that remind you of unfinished tasks out of the room, or at least out of sight as the bedroom should be a place where you can totally relax. It is obvious that things that make you happy will give a positive feeling.

• Beds should not be shaky: The mattress should provide good support to the body while resting. The Scientific Reason – The essential function of the bed is to provide a surface which is neither too hard nor too soft for the back. A shaky bed will creak and disturb others when people turn on the bed.

• The dressing table should be in the East or North: The Scientific Reason - The constant light from the North or East will light up your face when sitting in front of the mirror, thus allowing you to dress up well.

• Study table should face East, North or North-East: The Scientific Reason- The constant light from the North and the morning sunlight from the East will make reading easy, without much straining.

• Avoid Television in the bedroom: If a TV is kept, it should never be directly in front of the bed as it works as a mirror and generates negative energy. It can be kept to the right or left of the bed at an angle for comfortable viewing from bed. The Scientific Reasoning- A T.V. does not encourage intimacy. In fact it only encourages people to become couch potatoes. Also, the waves from the T.V are not good for your health and so keeping the T.V far away is always preferable.

• Computers should be kept in the South-East: The Scientific Reason - The South-East is considered the Aagneya (Fire)

corner. The ‘Vastu Pundits’ consider electrical appliances as the equivalent of fire and happily encourage you to keep all electric gadgets in the S-E of every room.

• Wardrobes should be in the North-West or South-West: The Scientific Reason - They serve as buffers to the hot evening sunlight coming in from the West.

• Attached bathroom should be in the East or South-East : The Scientific Reason - Normally the bathroom is used for bath and other activities, early in the morning, and so will be wet after use. If it is placed in the East side, the morning sunlight will dry up the area and the UV rays will kill all the germs.

• Avoid mirror directly opposite the bed: The Scientific Reason - When you wake up in the morning, all untidy and disheveled, it may be a shock when you see yourself in the mirror as you sit up in the bed!

• Avoid religious idols: The Scientific Reason - Many people may feel uncomfortable to lie around with their feet pointing towards the religious idols, as they believe it is disrespectful to god.

• Avoid Clutter: It represents stagnation. The Scientific R eason - When you see clutter you feel helpless about it, and it just keeps accumulating and becomes an irritant in your mind. Removing clutter in your bedroom will help you feel more efficient and function optimally. To tackle clutter, first take on small projects to help you avoid the feelings of being overwhelmed by the task at hand.

• Avoid storing things under the bed: The Reason- The space under the bed gets very dusty and cannot be cleaned often. Hence it is meaningless to store anything there.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL COLOUR FOR BEDROOM WALLS, ACCORDING TO VASTU?

• Colour of the bedroom walls: should be light pink, gray, blue, chocolate, dark green etc and not bright colurs. The Scientific Reason - Bright colours and bold patterns advance and make the space look smaller; while pale colours recede and reflect light and make the space look bigger. Contrasting colours and textures in a room break it up into several different areas and make it appear smaller

There are many games played in India. Most of those games are from the country sides of India. Even though these games are from the country sides, their entire motto is to develop the team spirit and unity. In this issue we will see about an ancient game played in India. It is widely known as “Kho-Kho. Kho-Kho ranks as one of the most popular traditional sports in India. The origin of Kho-Kho is difficult to trace, but many historians believe, that it is a modified form of ‘Run Chase’, which in its simplest form involves chasing and touching a person. With its origins in Maharashtra, Kho-Kho in ancient times, was played on ‘raths’ or chariots, and was known as Rathera.

Like all Indian games, it is simple, inexpensive and enjoyable. It does, however, demand physical fitness, strength, speed and stamina, and a certain amount of ability. Dodging, feinting and bursts of controlled speed make this game quite thrilling. To catch by pursuit - to chase, rather than just run - is the capstone of Kho-Kho. The game develops qualities such as obedience, discipline, sportsmanship, and loyalty between team members.

The rules of the game were framed in the beginning of the 20th century. During the late 1950s, the first national Kho-Kho championship was organized in Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh). The Government has initiated the following awards for the game: Arjuna Award, Eklavya Award for men, Rani Laxmi Bai award for women, Veer Abhimanyu award for boys under 18, and Janaki award for girls under 16.

How the game is playedEach team consists of twelve players, but only nine players

take the field for a contest. A match consists of two innings. An innings consists of chasing and running turns of 7 minutes each. Eight members of the chasing team sit in their eight squares on the central lane, alternately facing the opposite direction, while the ninth member is an active chaser, and stands at either of the posts, ready to begin the pursuit. Members of the chasing team have to put their opponent out, touching them with their palms, but without committing a foul. All the action in Kho-Kho is provided by the defenders, who try to play out the 7 minutes time, and the chasers who try to dismiss them. A defender can be dismissed in three ways: 1) if he is touched by an active chaser with his palm without committing a foul, 2) if he goes out of the limits on his own, 3) if he enters the limit late.

Defenders enter the limit, in batches of three. After the third and last defender of batch is out, the next batch must enter the limits, before a ‘kho’ is given by the successful active chaser. Defenders have full freedom of movement on both sides of the central lane, but the active chaser cannot change the direction to which he is committed. He cannot cross the central lane. An active chaser can change position with a seated chaser, by touching him from behind by palm, and uttering the word ‘kho’ loudly, and simultaneously, chase or attack is build up through a series of ‘khos’ as the chase continues with a relay of chasers. At the end of the innings there is an interval of 5 minutes and an interval of 2 minutes, in between the turns. Each side alternates between chasing and defense.

Kho-Kho can be played by men, women, and children of all ages. The game requires a very small piece of evenly surfaced ground, rectangular in shape, and 27m by 15m. The only equipment required is the two poles. The game lasts no more than 37 minutes. It is one of the most interesting games played in India. In the next issue we will meet with some other different games.

Simple Question and Answer Series by Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar The ONLY living Atharva Vedic Swamiji in USA

• Who is God?God is the manifest and unmanifest universe. We are each made in the likeness of God.

• Can you prove that God exist? One cannot perceive God unless they exist. Since God is the manifest and unmanifest universe, then He exists in the form of air, water, earth, fire, space and all the 108 elements that make up the universe.

• Why are there so many Gods in Hinduism? There is only one God or Universal Consciousness. It does not matter what name He is given. In Hinduism, the physical forces in the universe are each represented as an aspect of God. E.g: Vishnu = Space, Laxmi = Light, Vayu = Air, Pritivi = Earth, Agni = Fire, Ganga = Water.

• What is Mantra?Mantra is sound that causes vibrations in our outer and inner being. The vibrations of the mantra first pretrate the physical body, then permeates the astral body which has its center in the throat area. Then it permeates the causal body, which has its center in the heart area and finally the supra-causal body which exist in the form of pure light and has its center in the area of the navel.

•Why should I perform Pooja?Pooja is performed to create a change in one’s life.

•Is it easier to follow the path of goodness through Lord Shiva? The path of goodness always becomes easier with practice. The path of God will yield rich rewards that are long lasting. It involves no injury, harm or death to any animal or any other

being. Therefore only good karma is built up when God is worshipped. Also God wants people to prosper and to be happy because in that way the universe becomes a better and better place. But people must first make the effort. They must find the knowledge and then they must practice the knowledge in the correct way. Thereafter they will be conferred with all the blessings from the Supreme Being.

• Does the Hindu scriptures not speak about Sacrifices? The term `sacrifice’ as used in the Hindu scriptures means `yajna’- offering oblations and singing the praise of the Hindu Deity. There are circumstances when an old horse or oxen would be killed by a sage (holy person) in order to prove to his disciples that a particular mantra works. The soul of the animal so sacrificed is granted a higher form of birth by the power of the mantras uttered by the holy man.

• Do the Hindu Scriptures permit the eating of meat?YES.However the Hindu scriptures promote healthy vegetarian food. God created the universe as a wholesome natural ecological system that should remain free from the interference of humans. Killing of an animal causes its life to come to an end before the time that was established by Nature. Therefore the killer creates negative karma for himself and later that debt will have to be repaid.

•Why must we perform japa for 108 repetitions? There are 108 natural elements that make up the universe. Certain mantras require specific numbers of repetitions in order for them to work. When a holy person gives you a mantra, he must also tell you how many repetitions should be performed and what time of day the mantras should be recited.

•What is your opinion of the Caste System? I think that the Caste System was misunderstood, misinterpreted and misrepresented to the world. The RigVeda verse (10 : 90 : 12) state that from the mouth of the Supreme Being (Purusa), the Brahmin was created, from his arms, the Ksatriya caste, from his thighs came the Vaisya and from his feet came the Sudra. The `Brahmin by Birth’ supporters often explain that the Hindu scriptural texts are allegorical in nature. But when faced with a verse that will be disadvantageous to their position of status and privilege, they are quick to apply the literal meaning.

•What is your opinion of Caste System in terms of the Bhagavad Gita?In verse (4 : 13) in the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krisna states that the fourfold caste was created by Him by the different distribution of Guna and Karma. The three Gunas are modes ranging from the darkness of ignorance, passion for sensual satisfaction and finally the mode of goodness. Karma means our actions. Therefore if our action is in the mode of goodness, we are qualified to be in the Brahmin caste. By the same token, even if we are born from a Brahmin lineage and our actions are in the mode of ignorance and darkness, then we fall into the Sudra caste.

•How can I uplift myself from the bondage of Karma? We create our own karma by our every action. If we start now, in this minute, we can begin to change our karma. The Bhagavad Gita Verse (6 : 5) states that a man can raise himself or debase himself of his own volition. He is his own friend or he is his own enemy. Man has the ability to make free choice and exercise his own Free Will. He can choose the path of truth and goodness or the path that leads away from truth and goodness.

•How can a person live truthfully in a corrupt society? One must choose to set himself apart or to run with the flock. To anyone who is knowledgeable, confident and steady of mind, this is not a difficult choice to make.

•How can I be expected to live a life of purity when I live in a society that craves, meat, alcohol and sex?Purity is in the heart. Hinduism does not hold a fundamentalist view on the quality of life that one lives. Hinduism in itself is a way of life. If someone travels the land of India from Mount Kailash in the North to the Bay of Bengal in the South, he will see the practice of Hinduism in thousands of different ways. The outward practice comes from the inner mind. When one lives a life with Balance, inclusion and connection, he can achieve a state of purity even in a society such as the one you describe. Balance means to develop the physical body, the intellectual mind and the spiritual wholesomeness in concert with each other. Inclusion means to accept all peoples irrespective of their differences or their beliefs. Connection means that one must always stay `plugged-in’ to family and community.

•Why do Hindus worship a Monkey God?The proper name for the God you refer to is Hanuman Devta. He is the incarnation of Lord Shiva who returned to earth in this form to help Lord Rama (incarnation of Vishnu) to conquer the demon King Ravana and restore peace to the earth. Hanuman Devta is the embodiment of strength, courage, truth, and devotion among other qualities. What does one’s outward look matter when they are filled with all these divine qualities?

•Do evil spirits exist?Yes. There is abundant evidence about haunted buildings in every corner of the Globe.

•Can individuals become possessed by evil spirits?Yes. In the Holy Bible (Luke 8 : 2) , it is stated that Mary Magdalene was possessed by seven evil spirits. In Acts 19:16 it is stated that a man who was possessed by an evil spirit attacked a group of people. Volumes of evidence exist of people becoming possessed by spirits in burial grounds, at cremation sites or during the activities at the Kala Bhairava Pooja.

•How do evil spirits come about? There are many different types of spirits. The most common type is called BHUTA. This is the spirit of a person who recently died. Because most people are quite attached to material things in life, at the time of death, they think of the things that they have to leave behind and because of their attachment, they become doomed to exist in limbo. They are dis-embodied but

still exist in this same material plane that humans inhabit. Most times they remain invisible, but often times they can be seen and heard by people. They are miserable beings and are extremely jealous. When they see others enjoying the material things that they had to leave behind, the spirits can become very angry and bring harm to the family.

•Why do some families suffer more severely from the attack by spirits?A spirit may inhabit a particular location simply because it had spent most of its human life in that location. It may neither help nor hurt the people living there. However, in other situations, because of jealousy, greed, or hatred someone with the proper knowledge may deliberately place an evil spirit on the person, in the home or on the property of the people that they wish to harm. In such a case, the spirit has a specific purpose and that purpose is to cause grief to the family. Now you may ask that how is this possible? You must remember that Science has proven that matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. When we speak of spirits, we are speaking of the energy that was contained in the human body while it was in its living state now existing on its own as a dis-embodied spirit because the physical body no longer exist. Thus the harm that a physical person can bring to you in their living state is not very different from the harm that their spirit-energy can bring to you in their evil spirit state.

•How can you tell whether a growing child is being influenced by an evil spirit? It is often difficult to distinguish between the influence of an evil spirit and learned behavior in a person. A child may be born with good karmic influences but because of the environment, in which he grows up, he adopts very negative behavior patterns. However, the influence of a spirit in a child’s life becomes very noticeable when a child who has all material comforts, have parents who love him and who has numerous opportunities in life seems to be bent on destroying his own future. He becomes disobedient, refuses to attend school, gets in repeated troubles with the law, shuns his parents, relatives and only chooses those friends who follow a renegade lifestyle. Svoboda (1986) states that a spirit is of the same form as the mind, so it can enter your brain and do plenty of damage: create temptations, pervert your intellect, and so on.

• Can evil spirits be removed from a person or from a home?Yes. Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar understands paranormal activities and the world of spirits. He has perfected the cures for the removal of many different types of evil spirits from the body as well from the home environment. But an evil spirit will always fight to stay on and therefore the person who comes to be healed by Swami-Ji must understand that they must fight to help themselves heal. And the ability to put up a good fight to ward off the evil must come from knowledge.. Spiritual salvation through the Atharva Veda for

the marriage related problems.

The first and preliminary step in the development of the human race is marriage. Atharva Veda explains the term “marriage” as “the fundamental base of the worldly evolution”. Before marriage the human is individual. He/she is dependant. After the marriage, the individual is either dependant or independent. But the individuals become inter dependant. The inter dependence normally brings a great understanding between the two individuals, called as couple. In the life of some couple the understanding will be very less.

The problems in the marriage are divided into two major parts. One is pre marriage problems and the other is post marriage problems. The pre marriage problems are, unable to get a suitable bride or groom, un necessary delay in getting married. The post marriage problems are unnecessary raptures between the couple, lack of understanding, unable to have the sex in the proper way, unnecessary wastage of money, unexpected medical expenses of the wife or husband and many more like this. The Yaksha/Yakshini devathas of Atharva Veda play the most important role in solving the problems. Before starting the chanting of mantras, the horoscope must be analyzed by Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar as per the norms of Atharva Veda. Then the root cause of the problem will be detected by Swamiji Sri Siddhar and the proper Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini Devatha is to be found. The mantras should be chanted only as per the instruction given by the Swamiji. Even the pundits are not allowed to chant the mantras without the instruction from Swamiji. Chanting the mantras without the instruction of Swamiji is as dangerous as taking the powerful medicines without the prescription of a qualified medical practitioner. The medical practitioner only knows the health condition of the patient. He will adjust the dosage of the medicine according to the health condition of the patient. Like that Swamiji Siddhar only knows the condition of the planets and the problems. He will suggest the rituals. The rituals are entirely different from the regular prayers that are conducted at the homes and temples. In prayers only the general welfare is taken care and in the rituals the general welfare is secondary and the problem salvation is primary. In regular prayers the problem salvation never takes place.

For solving the pre marriage problems the rituals of Yakshini devathas are to be conducted as per the instruction of Swamiji. The first is Swayamvara Mohini. This Yakshini makes the mind of the devotee very strong on their counter part. She makes the devotee very happy and blesses her devotee with the wonderful counterpart. There are a lot of practical examples for the power of this Yakshini devatha. Her shape itself is very wonderful. She is a female deity. Atharva Veda explains her shape and color as follows. As the Sanskrit verse is very tough to understand the translation and the meaning of the verse is given here. “The Swayamvara Mohini is the Yakshini devatha. She is in the shape of a young woman of twenty years old. She is seated in a lotus flower. She wears white silk cloths. She is playing music with the musical instrument called veena. The name of that veena is vallaki. She enjoys music well. She brings the soul and mind of the devotee’s counterpart to the devotee. She likes sweets and

white flowers”. Sweets and white flowers take the major part in the rituals of this devatha.

The next Yakshini devatha is Jaganmohini. She can make an unmake. She easily gets satisfied with the rituals and this wonderful angel blesses her devotees with a long lasting married life. She is also a female deity of twenty years old. She is in standing pose. She also loves sweets much. But she likes the fragrance of red flowers. Among all the sweets, she likes cooked sweet rice. The sweetener used to sweeten the rice should be sugar candy. The sweet rice should be garnished with cashews, dry grapes (raisins), almonds, and dates. The sweet rice and red fragrant flowers play the most vital role in the rituals. She makes the life of her devotee as the most fragrant and the sweetest one.

The post marriage problems are solved by various Yaksha/Yakshini devathas. The major problem in the post marriage life is financial problems. The second, tenth and the eleventh houses of the horoscopes of the couple are to be analyzed as per the Atharva Veda. The first Yaksha devatha to solve the financial problems is Yaksharaja Kubera devatha. He solves the financial problems along with the Yakshini devatha called as Kamaladharini. They both join together and solve the financial problems of the devotees. The graha paripalana mahashanthi is also to be performed. The graham paripalana maha shanthi is entirely different from the navagraha Pooja performed by the regular priests. The problems will be solved spiritually by the blessings of the aforesaid Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devathas. The rituals or the chanting of the mantras are to be started only after getting the proper initiation from Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar is a must. OM SRI AUROBINDO AND MOTHER ON OCCULTISM

The special gift of a particular church line, or discipline, lays in a specific direction. Yet, it may cultivate not so much the higher lines of spiritual realization. In Christianity, side by side with the major saints, there was usually a group, or a line of praticants, that followed the occult, while outwardly observing the official creed. It is curious to note that often where the original text of the Bible speaks of “gods,” in the plural, referring to the deities, or occult powers, the official version translates it as “God,” to give the necessary theatric (“God is alive!”) value and atmosphere. But, if Occultism is to be feared because of its wrong uses and potential dangers, Spirituality too, should then be placed on the same footing. All good things in the world have their deformation and danger, but that is no reason why one should avoid them altogether. What is required is the correct attitude, discrimination, training, and discipline. Viewed in its true light, occultism is dynamic spirituality. In other words, it seeks to express and execute (bring down to the material world) the powers and principles of Spirit through the agency of the subtle forces of the mental and the physical.

Occultism is naturally separate from the transcendent spirit of God in Heaven, but it is an indispensable and undividable instrument for those who endeavor to manifest the Divine in a concrete form. Perhaps everyone practices occultism, whether in a small prayer or through taping into a power as big as the universe. However, only a few can do Vision Therapy. To some it is harmless; yet to many, it is dangerous (because of the lack of concentration).

Science is a vast system. In the physical sciences, the secret lies in Mother Nature. In occult science, one should know the mind’s powers and life’s powers. In physical science the same element can be in either gas, liquid, or solid form. Spirit

as the sterilization of knowledge depends on true formulas, not on false formulas. Convention, with compulsion is ignorant. Even Astrology, Astronomy, and Geometry are enumerations of science. If one is omni-potently effective he can understand the totality of science. The movements of cosmic forces are intuitive. We are all batteries carriying suggestions for the cosmic force. The incomparable cosmic science always has inter-connection with the Cosmic, or Mother Nature’s force. The explored knowledge of today depends until it is survived; after that, its slogans are invalid. In the olden days before the radio the saints did the job of the radio as an ordinary thing. It is merely a question of words. The medical sciences of today had its start many, many years back with the saints. The only difference was is the process of touch and in the choosing of the proper herbs. As long as one knows how to build one’s character, the truth that was there in the former times are still to be found today. There are not two things to discover, but only one thing. The mind, knowledge and wisdom; one goes quickly, another goes slowly, but the goal or the target of the seeker is the same.

Science goes along with religion. We need only labor and perseverance. How hard they worked in olden days! It is indeed very respectable. They were always awake. Their appetite was for knowledge; and they stayed free from worldly concerns. The external form and the visible form are the result of the inner-state of spiritual realization. For example: live, and living, and life. The people without wisdom go hither and thither. What goes on in the marriage hall? Not knowing what is their purpose; one is serving, while another one is eating.

The essential difference is: if one thinks everything is blue and dark and bad in the world, the world of occultism overtakes him. Help each other. Do good for others, as well as for one’s own self. Have humanitarian thoughts, not that of crazy dream world results and worldly pleasures. This is essential. They need not be abandoned; it just should not be given your first priority. Pray for everyone and for yourself. You will live according to your thoughts.

OLD IS GOLD About 164 years ago “Edgar Allen” was famous in writing and commanding the “English Language” and was well known to the world. The present generation should know about his works with enthusiasm. We are going to witness one of his famous writings “Cask of Amontillado”.

The thousand injuries of fortunate I had borne as the best as I could, but when we ventured upon insult I vowed revenge. You, who so well know the nature of my soul will not suppose, how ever, that gave utterance to a threat. At a length I would be avenged this was a point definitely settled – but the very definitivness with which was resolved precluded the idea of risk. I must not only punish but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong. It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued, as was my wont, to smile is his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation. He had a weak point – this Fortunato – although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared he prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine. Few Italians have the true virtuoso spirit. For the most part their enthusiasm is adopted to suit the time and opportunity, to practice imposture upon the British and Austrian millionaires. In painting and gemmary, Fortunato, like his countrymens, was a Quack, but in the matter of old wines he was sincere. In this respect I did not differ from him materially. I was skillful in the Italian vintages myself and bought largely whenever I could.

I was about dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season, that I encountered my friend. He accosted me with excessive warmth, for he had been drinking much. The man wore motley. He had on a tight fitting parti – striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap

and bells. I was so pleased to see him that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand. I said to him “My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to day. But I have received a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, and I have my doubts”. “How?” said he. “Amontillado, A pipe? Impossible! And in the middle of the carnival! I have my doubts”, I replied and I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you in the matter. You were not to be found, and I was fearful of losing bargain”.

“Amontillado!” “I have my doubts” “Amontillado” “And I must satisfy them” “Amontillado” “As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchresi. If any one has a critical turn it is he. He will tell me”.

“Luchresi cannot tell Amontillado from sherry”. And yet some fools will have it that his taste is a match for your own. “Come let us go”. “Whither”? “To your vaults” “My friend, no I will not impose upon your good nature. I perceive you have an engagement. Luchersi”. “I have no engagement; come”.“My friend, no it is not the engagement but the severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted. The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre”. “Let us go nevertheless. The cold is merely noting. Amontillado! You have been imposed upon. And as for Luchersi, he cannot distinguish sherry from Amontillado”. Thus speaking Fortuna, possessed Himself of my arm and putting on a mask of black silk and drawing a roquelaire closely about my person, I suffered him to hurry me to my palazzo. There were no attendants at home: they had absconded to make merry in honour of the time. I had told them that should not return until the morning, and had given them explicit orders not to stir from the house. These orders were sufficient, I well knew, to insure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned. I took from their sconces two flambeaux, and giving one to Fortunato, bowed him through several suites of rooms to the archway that led into the vaults. I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him, to

be cautious as he followed. We came at length to the foot of the descent and stood together upon the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresors.

The gait of my friend was unsteady and the bells upon his cap jingled as he strode. “The pipe” he said. “It is farther on”, I said but observe the white web – work which gleams from these cavern walls. “He turned towards me, and looked into my eyes with two filmy orbs that distilled the rheum of intoxication. “Nitre?” he asked, at length. “Nitre” I replied “how long have you had that cough?”

“Ugh! Ugh, Ugh! Ugh! My poor friend found it impossible to reply for many minutes. “It is nothing” he said at last. “Come” I said with decision, “We will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, and admired, beloved. You are happy, as once I was. You are a man to be missed. For me it is no matter. We will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible. Besides, there is Luchersi”. “Enough” he said. “The cough’s a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough”. “True- true” I replied, “and indeed I had no intention of alarming you unnecessarily – but you should use all proper caution”. A draught of this Medoc will defend us from the damps. Here I knocked off the neck of a bottle which I drew from a long row of its fellows that lay upon the mould. “Drink” I said, presenting him the wine. He raised it to his lips with a leer. He paused and nodded to me familiarly, while his bells jingled “I drink” he said, “to the buried that repose around us”, “and I to your long life”. He again took my arm and we proceeded. “These vaults” he said “are extensive”. “The montresors” I replied, “Were a great and numerous family”. “I forget your arms”, “a huge human foot d’or, in a field assure; the foot cruches a serpent rampant whose fangs are imbedded in a heel”.

“And the motto”? “Nemo me impure lacessit”. “Good”, he said. The wine sparkled in his eyes and the bells jingled. My own fancy grew warm with the Medoc. We had passed through long walls of piled skeletons, with casks

and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recesses of the catacombs. I paused again, and this time I made bold to seize Kortunato by an arm above the elbow. The “nitre” I said “see it increases. It hangs like Mors upon the Vaults. We are below the river’s bed. The drops of moist trickle among the bones. Come, we will go back before it is too late. Your cough”, “It is nothing” he said. “Letus go on but first, another draught of the Medoc”. I broke and reached him a flagon of De Grave. He emptied it at a breath. His eyes flashed with a fierce light.

He laughed and threw the bottle upwards with a gesticulation I did not understand. I looked at him in surprise. He repeated the movement a grotesque one. “You do not comprehend he asked”. Then you are not of the brotherhood “How” “you are not of the masons” “yes, yes” I said “yes… yes “you?” impossible! A mason? I replied “A sign” He said “a sign” it is this I answered, producing from beneath the folds of my roQuelaire a trowel. “you jest” he exclaimed, recoiling a few paces “But let us Proceed to the Amontillado “Be it so” I said replacing the tool beneath the cloak and again offering him my arm. He leaned upon it heavily. We continued our route in search of the Amontillado. We passed through a range of low arches, descended, passed on, and dencending again, arrived at a deep crypt in which the foulness of the air caused our flambeaux rather than to glow than flame.

At the most remote end of the crypt there appeared another less spacious. Its walls had been lined with human remains, piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris. Three sides of this interior crypt were still ornamated in this manner. From the fourth side the bones had been thrown down and lay promiscuously upon the earth. Forming at one point a mound of some size. Within the wall thus exposed by the displacing of the bones, we perceived a still interior crypt or recess, in depth about four feet, in width three, in height six or seven It seemed to have been constructed for no especial use within itself, but formed merely the interval between two of the colossal supports of the roof of the catacombs, and was backed by one of their circumscribing walls of solid granite It was in vain that Fortunato, up lifting his dull torch, endeavored to pry into the depth of the recess. It is termination the feeble light did not enable us to see. “Proceed” I said, “here in is the Amontillado. As for Luchersi”. “He is an ignoramus” interrupted my friend, as he stepped unsteadily forward, while I fallowed immediately at his heels. In an instant he had reached the extremity of the niche, and finding his progress arrested by the rock, stood stupidly bewildered A moment more and I had fettered him to the granite. In its surface were two iron staples, distant from each other about two feet, horizontally. From one of these depended a short chain, from the other a padlock Throwing the links about his waist, it was but the work of a few seconds to secure it. He was too much astounded to resist. Withdrawing the key I stepped back from the recess, “pass your hand” I said, “over the wall, you can not help feeling the nitre”. Indeed it is very damp and once more let me implore you to return No? Then I must positively leave you. But I must first render you all the little attentions in my power”. “The Amontillado”, ejaculated my friend not yet recovered from

his astonishment. “True” I replied. Amontillado, as I said these words I busied my self among the pile of bones of which I have spoken before. Throwing them aside, I soon uncovered a quantity of building stone and mortar. With these materials and with the aid of my trowel, I began vigorously to wall up the entrance of the niche. I had scarcely laid the first tier of the masonry when I discovered that the intoxication of Fortunato had in a great measure worn off. The earliest indication I had of this was a low moaning cry from the depth of the recess it was not the cry of a drunken man. There was then a long and obstinate silence. I laid the second tier, the third, the fourth, and then I heard the furious vibrations of the chain.

The noise lasted for several minutes, during which, that I might hearken to it with the more ratisfaction, I ceased my labours and sat down upon the bones. When at lest the clanking subsided, I resumed the trowel, and finished without interruption the fifth, the sixth, and the seventh tier. The wall was now nearly upon a level with my breast. I again paused, and holding the flambeaux over the mason- work, threw a few feeble rays upon the figure within. A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of the chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back. For a brief moment I hesitated, I trembled unsheathing my rapier, I began to grope with it about the recess; but the thought of an instant reassured me. I placed my hand upon the solid fabric of the catacombr, and felt satisfied. I reapproached the wall; I replied to the yells of him who clamoured.

I re-echoed, I aided and surpassed them in volume and in streangth. I did this, and the clamourer grew still. It was now midnight, and my task was drawing to a close. I had completed the eighth, the ninth and the tenth tier. I had finished a portion of the last and the eleventh; there remained but a single store to be fitted and plastered in. I struggled with its weight; I placed it partially in its destined position. But now there came from out the niche a low laugh that erected the hairs upon my head. It was succeeded by a sad voice, which I had difficulty in recognizing as that of the noble Fortunato. The voice said “Ha- ha-ha-he-he-he”- a very good joke, indeed an excellent jest. We will have many a rich laugh about it at the palazzo- he-he-he over our wine he-he-he. The Amontillado “I said” yes Amontillado but it is not getting late? Will not they be awaiting us at the palazzo the Lady Fortunato and the rest? “Let us be gone”. “Yes”, I said “let us be gone” “For the love of God, montresor”. “Yes”, I said “for the love of God”. But to these words, I hearkened in vain for a reply. I grew impatient and I called aloud “Fortunatto”.

No answer. I called again, “Fortunatto”. No answer and still I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within. There came forth in return only a jingling of the bells. My heart grew sick and it was the dampness of the catacombs that made it so. I hastened to make an end of my labour. I forced the last stone into its position. I plastered it up. Against the new masonary, I re- ereated the old rampart of bones. For the half of a century no mortal has disturbed him. In peace requiescat!.

STRESS

Every era in history had been characterized by some debilitating disease in the advanced cultures for instance there were the plagues of the middle ages, and the ravages of polio and pneumonia in the early 1900s for the most part these diseases were eliminated when the environmental condition were improved or when the germs or viruses were destroyed through drugs.

In modern society we too have a characteristic diseases but one that is normally considered to be not so easy to eliminate. It underlies such diverse condition as psychometric diseases, heart disease and chemical dependency, and it is a major contributor to disturbance in once emotional, social and family life. It inhibits creativity and personal effectiveness, and it is present in the sense of general dissatisfaction that is so obvious in our day to day lives. The name of this condition is stress, and it has been called by researchers at Cornell university medical college, the most debilitating medical and social problem in the world today.

It is hard to imagine how a single cause can contribute to such a variety of disorders until one realizes that it is a very fabric of our lives that is involved. Stress is uniquely different from what we normally think as a disease. It has no biological structure such as germs or virus, nor does it lurk in dark sewers or contaminated water. Rather it is the result of how our mind and body function and interact. It is the consequence of how we regulate, or to put it more appropriately, how we do not regulate the mental and physical functioning of our being. In a few short words stress is the result of the way we have consciously or unconsciously chosen to live. It is the disease created by the abuse we give our mind and body and it leads to an incredible variety of symptoms. They may be as innocuous as a temper tantrum or as a destructive as a heart attack. Stress may show itself in alcoholism or in depression. It leads to sleeplessness and to the common cold. Its symptoms are many, while it is cause often goes unrecognized and untreated.

Solution to stressWe do a variety of things to cope with this problem, much of which, however, is only palliative. For instance, medical treatment is focused upon the symptoms but does little for the

underlying condition of cause. On our own we smoke, drink, take pain killer, and sleeping tablets, have massages, watch TV, and go on vacations. The frequency and variety of its symptoms are on the increase. One of the reasons for this is that stress is not a ‘thing’ such as a germ or virus or bad water. It cannot be put on a slide, nor under a microscope, or bottled, or separated into categories nor can it be counted. Our past success in controlling disease to some extant has been because we could do these things, and this success has blinded us to the real nature of the problem of stress.

Stress in itself is always harmfull. No one has ever benefited from stress. Scientific researches, however though sophisticated, is aimed only at the physical level, while

stress is a condition of the mind and reflects its symptoms in the body. Thus, seeking solutions from the medical end psychological profession can be confusing, for expert in these fields often do not agree with one another.

Science can not explain why we have emotions at all how do we became angry, how we do feel sorrow, why do we like something and not other things, why are we suffering, how to get rid of miseries? While are Vedic literatures analyses rigorously and give confidant answers to all the above question, Science blinks like a small hopeless child , It is possible to achieve optimal balanced and thus stress free living by the method of Atharav Vedic Thantra Meditation invented by Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar.

Than having to go to a doctor or the drug or drink. Its focus is the entire person, body, mind and soul, and this is exactly what is needed to deal with psychosomatic disease .Interestingly enough, this modern approach has its roots in Yoga science, One of the ancient discipline known to man as the Vedas tells us” Since it is the self by which we suffer, so it is the self by which we will find relief.

Knowledge of the SelfThe Vedas state that consciousness is a symptom of the soul .In its pure condition, the soul exists in the spiritual world, but when its fall down into contract with matter, the living being is covered by and illusion called false egoism .False ego which means to misidentify once to the body, be wilders the consciousness when we look at our hand or leg we say “This is my hand or This is my leg”. The conscious self, the I is therefore the owner and observer of the body. Intellectually, this fact is easily understandable, and by the spiritual realization that results from meditation or Chanting this truth can be directly and continuously experienced.

When the living being identifies with the material body and losses awareness of his real, spiritual self, he inevitably fears death, old age, and disease. He fears loss of beauty intelligence, and strength and experiences countless other anxieties and false emotions relating to the temporary body. But by meditation even in the early stages we realize over self to be pure and changeless sprit souls, completely distinct from the material body. Because the Meditation is completely pure spiritual sound vibration, it has the power to restore our Consciousness to its original, uncontaminated condition. At this point we sees to be controlled by jealousy, by go try pride, and envy and hatred as Lord Krishna tells us in the Bhagvad Gita, The soul is “Unborn, eternal, ever existing ,undying and primeval”. As our false bodily identification dissolves and we perceive are true transcendental existence, we automatically transcend all the fears and anxieties of material existence.

Bring Real HappinessEveryone is thirsting for true and lasting happiness .but because material pleasure is limited and temporary it is compared to a tiny drop of moisture in the desert .It gives us no permanent relief because material sensation and relationships lack the potency to satisfy the spiritual desire of the soul. But the meditation provides complete satisfaction because it places us in direct contact with god and his spiritual pleasure potency. God is full of all bliss, and when we enter his association, we can also experience the same Thantra happiness.

ConclusionA news brief in the vegetarian times reported the researchers at Harvard medical school conducted experiments on chanting and have found the repeating phrases or words can be valuable technique in helping to reduce stress. The test was conducted in two groups. One the doing meditation and the other not doing meditation group. According to the researcher the meditation group shoed a significantly higher elevation of measurable chemical in the blood that normally occurs during relaxation than did the non meditation group. Meditation produces the relaxation response. We are glad to see that the leaders of the academic world are discovering some of the benefits of meditation, But It is also very important to know the best way of doing meditation through Swamiji Call Sri Selvam Siddhar to get the guidance about the secrets of Atharav Veda Thantra Meditation to make your body, soul in a happy level always.Contact Swamiji call USA Toll free@ 1-888-808-1418 / 1-888-808-1428 e- mail: [email protected]

Different Schools of yoga classified asanas in different types. One method of classification is on the starting position of the asanas. This is the major type of classification. The asanas are classified into four types.1. Standing, 2.Sitting, 3. Prone and 4. Supine. Some schools of yoga classified on the basis of the movements of final pose of the asanas. Thus the asanas are classified into three types. 1. Meditation Asanas 2.Relaxation Asanas and 3. Cultural Asanas.

Meditation Asanas: These asanas are aimed to prepare the practitioner to sit for extended periods of time without moving the body and without discomfort. When the body is steady and still in the sitting position for a long period, then only the meditation is experienced. Deep meditation requires the spinal column to be straight and very few asanas can satisfy this condition. In higher stages of meditation, the practitioner loses control over the muscles of the body. Initially, people find it difficult to sit in one asana for a long period. However, through the regular practice, the legs and hips will become flexible enough to comfortably maintain a steady posture. Some of the meditation asanas are Sukhasana, Ardha

Padmasana, Padmasana and Siddhasana.

Relaxation asanas: These asanas are meant for the relaxation of the body and mind. The asanas in this type appear very easy at first, yet to do them properly is quite difficult, because the tension in all the muscles of the body must be consciously released to get complete relaxation. The important asanas for relaxation are Savasana and Makrasana.

Cultural asanas: These asanas are meant for culturing the body and mind. Cultural postures are mainly aimed to physical culture and thereby maintain the health of the body. Most of the asanas come under the category of the cultural postures. The organs of human body are made up of tissues. Thus the health of the body depends on the health of the tissues. The circulatory system can be kept in efficient condition through cultural postures, which ensure constant supply of proper nourishment and of the internal secretions of the endocrine Glands, elements necessary for nourishment of tissues. Thyroid, pituitary and the pineal glands are best taken care of by Sirasasana and Sarvangasana. The smooth functioning of the digestive system requires the gentle and automatic massage of the digestive organs. Cultural postures like Bhujangasana, Salabhasana and Ardha Matsyendrasana are excellent in keeping the abdominal organs in good

health and effective removal of waste products. Inverted asanas like Sirasasana and Sarvangasana, by sending a richer blood supply to the brain, ensure its health and also the health of the cranial nerves serving the different organs of senses. Yogic postures are excellent spinal exercise. These postures preserve the health of the nerves.

On the basis of final position and movements, cultural asanas can be further classified as

1. Backward bending Asanas, 2. Forward bending Asanas, 3. Spinal twisting Asanas, 4. Inverted Asanas and 5. Balancing Asanas.

On a physical level, the backward bending asanas stretch the abdominal muscles, tone and strengthen the muscles controlling the spine, helping prevent slipped disc and other back conditions. The spinal nerves, which emerge from between the adjoining vertebrae, are also toned. This has beneficial repercussions throughout the body since these nerves give energy to all the other nerves, organs and muscles in the body. Forward bending asanas loosen up the back, maintain good health and increase vitality. During a forward bending asana, each of the vertebras is separated, the nerves are

stimulated, blood circulation around the spine is increased and the spinal cord is being nourished. This group of asanas are very important for making the back muscles supple and strong, compressing and massaging the abdominal organs, including the liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines and stretching the leg muscles and tendons.

Most of the spinal twist asanas enhance the pranic flow in the samana region, around the naval. This also nourishes the organs such as the pancreas, kidneys, stomach, small intestines, liver and gall bladder, relieves associated disorders and rejuvenates the tissues generally. Inverted asanas reverse the action of gravity on the body, instead of everything being pulled towards the feet, the orientation shifts towards the head. Generally these practices improve health, reduce anxiety and stress, and increase self confidence. They also increase mental power, concentration and the capacity to sustain large workloads without strain. Inverted asanas encourage a rich supply of blood to flow to the brain, nourishing the neurons and flushing out toxins. Blood and lymph, accumulated in the lower limbs and abdomen, are drained back to the heart then circulated to the lungs, purified and recirculated to all parts of body. This process nourishes the cells of the whole human organisms. The enriched blood flow allows the pituitary gland to operate more efficiently turning the entire endocrine system. This has a positive effect on the metabolic processes and even on ways of thinking.

People suffering from high blood pressure and worse back conditions, especially slipped disc should not practice these asanas. Those with illnesses that make the blood impure should not perform inverted asanas until the blood is purified. Those who are uncertain about their blood should seek the advice of a yoga teacher or a doctor. Women should not practice inverted postures during pregnancy or menstruation.

Balancing asanas develop the cerebellum, the brain centre that controls the body in the work

of motion. These asanas induce physical balance, stilling unconscious movement. As the moving body attains balance it becomes increasingly free to rely on other forces, such as gravity, to support and propel it. This group of practice develops a balanced mind and is especially noted for balancing the nervous system and removes stress and anxiety.

Pranayama is the yogic technique to bring the breathing in regularity, rhythmic and balanced. Lot of techniques are involved in pranayama. The word pranayama is comprised of two roots: prana plus ayama. Prana means ‘vital energy’ or ‘life force’. It is the force, which exists in all things, whether animate or inanimate. Although closely related to the air we breathe, it is subtler than air or oxygen. Therefore, pranayama should not be considered as mere breathing exercise aimed at introducing oxygen into the lungs. Pranayama utilizes breathing to influence the flow of prana in the nadis or energy channels of the pranamaya kosha or the body of energy. The word Ayama is defined as ‘extension’ or ‘expansion’. Thus, the word pranayama means ‘extension or expansion of the dimension of prana’. The techniques of pranayama provide the method whereby the life force can be activated and regulated in order to go beyond one’s normal boundaries or limitations and attain a higher state of vibratory energy. Pranayama practices establish a healthy body by removing blockages in the pranamaya kosha, enabling an absorption of prana. The spiritual seeker however, requires

tranquility of mind as an essential prelude to spiritual practice. To this end, many pranayama techniques utilize- Kumbaka, breath retention, to establish control over the flow of prana, calming the mind and controlling the thought process.

There are different types of pranayama such as Sensitizing pranyama, Tranquilizing pranayama, Vitalizing prnayama and balancing pranayama etc. Pranayama done with the awareness of lungs or any other parts of the body are sensitive pranayama. The practice brings more sensitiveness to that part. Mudra pranayamas are example for this. Here the practitioner uses various mudras like Chinmudra, Chinmaya mudra, Brahma mudra etc. To get more awareness and thereby channelize the energy properly. The practice of Ujjayi and Brahmari pranayama awakens awareness in the

inner psychic. The sound vibrations in the brahmari produce a soothing effect in the mind and nervous system. Sheetali and Sheetkari pranayama are unique because, rather than breathing through the nose, inhalation takes place through the mouth, where the cooling effect occurs. These types of practices tranquilize the pranamaya kosha. Nadi sudhdhi pranayama is a singularly important pranayama for bringing the balance. By the practices of this pranayama, the pranic channels are purified and enhance the proper flow of pranic energy throughout the body. Alternating the inhalation and exhalation, between the left and right nostrils, nadi sudhdhi pranayama is to be practiced. Thus by influencing the Ida and Pingala nadis, the constrolling oscillation of the body/mind network and to bring balance and harmony throughout the system. Nadi sudhdhi pranayama is truly a balancing pranayama because it corrects the imbalance both in mental and physical body and restores the equilibrium.

Mudra means gesture or attitude. Mudras can be described as psychic, emotional, devotional and aesthetic gestures. Yogis have experienced mudras as the attitudes of energy flow, intended to link individual pranic force with univiersal or cosmic force, mudra is also defined as ‘seal’, ‘short-cut’, or ‘circuit by – pass’. Mudras are a combination of subtle physical movements, which alter mood, attitude and perception, which deepen awareness and concentration. A mudra may involve the whole in a combination of asana, pranayama and bandha or it may be a simple hand position. Mudras are introduced after some proficiency has been attained in asana, pranayama and bandha, and gross blockages have been removed. Mudras are higher practices which lead to awakening of the pranas, charkas kundalini and which can bestow major siddhis, psychic powers to the advanced practitioner.

There are four bandhaas: Jaladhara Bandha, Moola Bandha, Uddiyana Bandha and Maha Bandha. Maha Bandha is a combination of the first three bandhas. These three bandhas directly

act on the three grandhis or psychic knots. Moola bandha is associated with brahma grandhi, uddiyana bandha with Vishnu grandhi and jaladhara bandha with rudra grandhi. The grandhis prevent the free flow of prana along sushmna nadi and thus impede the awakening of the charkas and the rising of kundalini.

Kriyas are the Yogic techniques to cleanse the internal organs. According to Hatha yoga pratipika of Atharva Veda, there are six cleansing techniques called shat kriyas. They are Kapalabathi, Trataka, Neti, Dhouti, Nauli and Basthi. Yogic kriyas remove the waste materials of our internal organs which are not expelled normally. Therefore, the aims of Hatha Yoga and of the Shat kriyas are to cleanse the internal organs and thereby create harmony between the major pranic flows, Ida and Pingala, and attaining physical and mental purification and balance.

ConclusionIt is, therefore, important to introduce yoga to children at the very young age in order to make them a better citizen and thereby create a better world. The need of the hour is to inculcate a disciplined way of life at the beginning of their life and there is no better way than introducing the yoga for the children at the school level, which will guide them to lead a healthy, peaceful and blissful life.

Yogic exercise includes wide range of practices. These practices provide the practioner good health and vigor. To cope with the modern social problems, stress and tensions, the practice of yoga is highly essential. For most of the people, yoga is a means of maintaining health and well-being in the increasing stressful society. If one practices all the techniques mentioned above, he or she can achieve good health and well being. Yoga practices have succeeded as an alternative form of therapy in diseases such as asthma, diabetes, blood pressure, digestive disorders and other ailments of chronic nature. Thus the practice of yoga helps the individual to lead a happy and healthy life. Salutation to the great saint His Holiness Pathanjali.

By the greates divine blessings of the Almighty and Swamiji I had gift of discussing about the Spirituality

of Veda, Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and many spiritual leaders. In this issue also they have blessed me with a gift of discussing spirituality. In this issue I try to give my ideas on Spirituality and religion.

Religion is a path to God. Spirituality is also a path to God. However they have differences in approach. According to the Vedas, the essence of religion is “Fear God and obey God”.The quintessence of spirituality is “Love God, humanity and become another God.” There are many steps in practicing spirituality. The steps are as follows.

Past vs. Present: Religion tends to take great inspiration from the past. It reveres the ancient religious texts, as the way to achieve salvation. Spirituality is not so concerned with the past. Spirituality believes in the eternal now. To attain liberation and to be a good human being we need to live in the present. It is not the past or the future that gives us liberation. We achieve peace of mind only when we concentrate on doing the right things here and now.

Fear vs. Love: Quite often religion takes the approach of fearing God. Religion is a reminder to do the right things. So nobody will suffer in the future. The spiritual approach to God is through the path of love. Spirituality teaches us not to fear God, but approach him through the path of love.

Where is God? Often religion talks of God as being high in the heavens. At times God can seem far from the reach of aspiring humanity. Spirituality shows us that God is omniscient and omnipresent and can be felt as a living presence in our own heart. Furthermore not only is God reachable but we can attain the inner realization of God.

Universality: Many followers of religion feel that only their path can lead to salvation. They have tremendous faith in their own religion, but at the same time they feel other religions are wrong and cannot lead a seeker to God. Spirituality feels that all religions are valid. Spirituality knows there are many paths to the same goal. Spirituality embraces all the world religions, but at the same time, is not constrained by any religious forms.

Outer worship vs. Inner Worship: Religion places great

emphasis on outer forms and outer rituals. These are helpful for giving a sense of formality to the worship of God. But spirituality is not concerned with outer rituals. Spirituality says that what is important is a seeker’s inner attitude. Through practicing spirituality, we can develop an inner shrine in our own heart. The great sage Thirumoolar has dealt a lot in these subjects. There are many evidences and examples for the inner worship. The very practical example is a great saint named Poosalar Nayanar from the southern part of India.

Religion and spirituality have their differences but at the same time they can embrace each other. Through following their religion great saints have attained the fruits and realizations of a mystical approach to God. This includes Christian mystics, Muslim mystics and Sufi Saints. In fact each religion has produced spiritual seekers of the highest order.

Outer peace is a mutual compromise. Two individuals or two nations find no better way to bring about some harmony; therefore, they resort to compromise. There is no inner satisfaction here, but just because the two individuals or two nations have to stay together on earth, they feel that there is no other way if they have to live on earth, then they have to resort to compromise. But inner joy, inner satisfaction, inner peace remain a far cry. Inner peace is mutual sacrifice. This sacrifice is founded upon conscious awareness of one’s reality. In this sacrifice, the one finds fulfillment in the many and the many find fulfillment in the one. On the strength of

Spirituality.

Karma 35

their inner oneness, two individuals on the outer plane make a sacrifice. But when they dive deep within, they feel that there is no such thing as sacrifice. It is the supreme necessity in both of them to please, satisfy and fulfill each other. The Upanishads have dealt a lot in this subject. Outer joy is nothing more than pleasure, pleasure-life. This pleasure-life is followed by depression and frustration-life; and what looms large in depression and frustration will lead to destruction.

Inner joy is spontaneous satisfaction. This satisfaction we discover in the heart of universal oneness. In order to have inner joy we have to give up the desire-life and enter into the domain of aspiration-life. Only in aspiration-life can we discover the heart of universal oneness. For this inner joy I wish to tell a small example. We meet many poor people in our routine life. Normally we give some money to them and we leave. But if on any day, if we offer him some food and the poor gets satisfied, we can feel a greatness, well and happiness in the mind. None of us will worry about the expenses. This is called as inner joy.

Outer faith is nothing more than a rope of sand; it crumbles in the twinkling of an eye. With outer faith we cannot sing the everlasting song of the Absolute Supreme. Only in everlasting things can the Absolute Supreme sing His transcendental, universal Song.

Inner faith is our divine conviction. Inner faith makes us realize that we are of God, that we have a Source and our Source is God. Inner faith also makes us realize that we are in God and we are for God. When we discover that we are of God and we feel that our life has meaning. Our life has made a promise to God, and our human life, both individual and collective, must fulfill that promise. What is that promise? That promise is to manifest spirituality in this earth and make each and every human being as a Godly human being. We are in God. What does this mean? It means that we have accepted God’s cosmic Leela, His divine Game. We want to participate in His cosmic Game. God the eternal Player invites us and inspires us to participate in His cosmic Game and we want to play in the Game. While playing the game we will enjoy peace, bliss and satisfaction in boundless measure.

We are for God. What does this mean? It means that we have become supremely chosen instruments of God and He is manifesting Himself in an unprecedented manner in and through us. He is manifesting His Divinity, His Eternity, His Infinity and His Reality in and through us on earth.

Each human has three natures: the animal, the human and the divine. The animal in us is nothing short of immediate destruction. The human in us is give and take, or possess and be possessed. The divine in us is self-giving, and self-giving eventually is transformed into God-becoming. The divine

in us grows glows and flows. When it grows, it grows into the transcendental consciousness, the transcendental height. When it glows, it covers the length and breadth of the world and finds its existence in the entire universe. When it flows, it flows in Eternity. At that time, Eternity and the divine Love flow together. How we can make the divine glow? Only by practicing the spiritual life one can make the divine glow. There are many things as the base of the spiritual living. They are Transformation, Service and Love.

Transformation: What is transformation? Transformation is the unlearning of the things that ignorance has taught us. This ignorance had a favorite student. That student is the physical mind, not the higher mind or the illumined mind. The gross

Page 38: Spiritual Karma Magazine 49. Published by Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar-Dr Commander Selvam-Shiva Vishnu Temple

Karma 36

physical mind has taught us quite a few things which we now want to unlearn. The sooner we can unlearn the teachings of ignorance, the sooner our transformation, the transformation of our entire being, will take place.

Service: Whom do we serve? We do not serve the human in others or the human in ourselves. We serve the divine in others, the Supreme in others. And the Supreme in others is the same Supreme who abides in us. When we serve the Supreme in others consciously, soulfully, devotedly and unconditionally, we feel a kind of expansion. In this expansion we feel that we are no longer just for ourselves, but for all. United we are singing, playing and dancing in God’s Garden.

The human in us does not use the term ‘service’; it immediately uses the term ‘help.’ But when the human in us thinks that it is offering help, the divine in us knows that this is a mistake. The divine in us serves the Supreme, the Absolute Supreme. The Absolute Supreme does not need help.; He has and He is everything. He is Infinity, He is Eternity, He is Immortality. But when we serve Him, our humility grows, our spontaneous divinity grows. We feel that we are tiny drops in the ocean, insignificant, infinitesimal drops. But when the drops enter into the ocean, when even the tiniest possible drops lose their personality and individuality, they become the infinite ocean itself. So it is through our service, devoted service that we consciously grow into the Vast, into Infinity’s Light and Delight.

Love: Why do we love? We love because of our Source, who created us, has taught us one supremely significant thing: love.

This is what He has taught the soul in us, and the soul in us tries to bring this teaching always to the fore. The Supreme is the only teacher and He teaches only one subject, and that subject is love. He has infinite Love and He is infinite Love. Just because He is all Love, eternal Love, He is our dearest, He is our sweetest, He is our All. And because we want to love Him for the sake of love alone, without asking Him for any recompense, He feels that we are His chosen instruments.

Love is the greatest power, the most powerful power in us. But it is divine love that is most powerful, not human love. When a seeker enters into the spiritual life, he feels within and without a flood of love. And when he feels this love, he consciously tries to dedicate himself to the Source. He sees and feels that he is becoming consciously and constantly the perfect embodiment of God the eternal Truth, and God the eternal Light.

Each individual seeker is God’s conscious representative on earth. A seeker is he who knows that ignorance-life is not the answer. Aspiration-life, which is the life of love divine-love of God, love of truth, love of light- can be the only answer. A seeker may not be consciously aware that he is infinitely higher than those who are un aspiring. Even if he is aware of what he is and who he is, he may not fully manifest what he has and what he is within. For the manifestation of his inner divinity, he has to aspire, constantly aspire, and become the ceaseless, ever-mounting flame. Right now the flame is within him, but there shall come a time when he shall grow into the flame itself. Once the seeker becomes the burning, glowing and illumining flame, the Absolute Supreme manifests Himself in and through this ever-mounting flame. In this ever-mounting flame the seeker discovers not only his self-transcendence but also God’s Self-transcendence. He and his eternal Beloved together are transcending, constantly transcending the height of Eternity’s experience and Eternity’s realization.

By practicing the spiritual life one can lead a comfortable living. As Swamiji Sri. Selvam used to say “You live according to your thoughts”. If the thoughts are high one can lead the highest style of comfortable living. If the thoughts are not spiritual and if the thoughts are negative, it is definite that the life will be the most down trodden one. To avoid the down trodden life and to get a comfortable living one should practice spirituality in the life. I thank the Almighty and Swamiji for blessing me with a chance to discuss Spirituality. I pray the Almighty to make us meet in the next issue also.

Wholesome food, causes growth of healthy body while unwholesome food causes diseases”.

Ayurveda states that food and drink, that appeal to the eye, taste and feel and are taken according to regimen, are the sustainers of life. They are the fuel to the “Jadaragni” (digestive fire) that burns within the body. If food and drink are ill chosen, ill prepared or ill served, the consequences will be harmful. Note that Ayurveda lays emphasis on not only selection and cooking of the food but also on how it is served. Food should be chosen to suit the individual constitution. The taste of the food also has to be considuced. Its ‘guna’ that is, whether food is heavy or light, hot or cold, oily or dry liquid or solid. The seasons of the year must also be considered in choosing proper diet. A broad classification of foods is necessary for designing diet. According to Charaka Samhita, foods are grouped as follows.1. Sukadhanya (grains with husk)2. Samidhanaya (pulses)3. Mamsa (meats)4. Saka (vegetables)5. Phala (fruits)6. Harita (greens)7. Madya (alcoholic drinks)8. Jala (water)9. Gorasa (milk and milk products)10. Iksu (sugarcane products) Further to this classification, charaka samhita describes the qualities, effects on the body and dosha of these 10 types of food.

Food for Tri – doshas1. Vata dosha:- Foods that aggravate ‘vata’ are apples melons, Potatos, Tomato, egg plant, Icecream, Beef, Peas and green salad. Hence these foods must not be taken in excess. Foods that benefits vata prakriti are coconuts, brown rice, red cabage, bananas, grapes, cherries and oranges

2. Pitta dosha:- Spicy foods, peanut, butter, papaya tomotos and Garlic are to be avoided or taken less. Foods that benefit pitta dosha are mangoes, oranges, peas, plums and Green salad.

3. Kapha dosha:- Dairy products, dates, bananas, melon, coconut, pineapples, increase kapha. Beneficial foods are, dry fruits, pomegranates, Basmathi rice, chicken etc.

Seasonal Selections In summer, pitta is in dominance. Avoid pungent, hot, spicy foods. Autumn is the season of vata, hence avoid dry fruits, high protein foods etc. Winter, of course is

the period of kapha. One should avoid cold substances like Icecream, cold drinks, curd and cheese.

Incompatible foodsThe following foods should not be taken together – Milk and Fish, milk and Meat, Yoghurt and beef, Milk and sour fruits. These combinations, if taken, cause production of toxins.

How to eat properly ? Eat only when you feel hungry. The food ingested earlier, should be allowed to be digested fully. Similary, do not drink (water) when you are not thirsty.

When you feel hungry, do not assuage it by drinking water. If you drink at this time, the liquid will dissolve the digestive enzymes and Agni will be reduced. Similarly when you are thirsty, do not eat. Quench your thirst first. Eat your food in a congenial atmosphere with out distractions and disturbances.

Each mouth ful should be chewed at least 30 times. This helps the digestive juices of the mouth to do their work and in addition, it gives time for the stomach to prepare it self to receive food. One third of you stomach should be filled with food, one third with water and one third with air.

Do not over eat. When you over eat, the stomach distends itself. It expands like a balloon and if overeating is regularly done, the stomach will demand additional food. Overeating also results in the production of toxins in the digestive tract.

Do not drink water immediately after food. If you suffer from constipation, or indigestion drinking warm – water before during the meals may help. Warm water activates Agni

How to fast properly? Before you undertake a fast, consult your physicianA person with vata constitution should not observe fast for more than 3 days. Same rule applies to pitta dominant persons. But persons with kapha constitution can go on fast longer because it benefits them. If a juice fast is undertaken, it is important to remember that grape juice is good for the vata constitution, pomegranate juice for the pitta constitution, and apple juice for the Kapha constitution. Each day of the fast, drink about one and one-half quarts of the juice diluted with water. During fasting, the digestive fire becomes rekindled and, since there is no food to digest, agni slowly burns away the balance of food if any. When one is observing a fast, physical strength and stamina should be watched. If it becomes noticeably less, the fast should be discontinued. For the normal healthy individual a warm water fast (one to two quarts perday) is advisable at least one day a week. This practices allows the digestives system to rest

Tips given by Acharya charakaCereals are ideal for use when an year old.Pulses are ideal for use when a year old. The old is rough, the new is heavy. When dehusked and fried, pulses are digested readily.

Meat of animals which died naturally, killed by poisons or by snakes, tigers etc. should be discarded; as also that of too fat, too old, too young and emaciated. Meat soup is a useful tonic for those with phthisis, emaciation and other serious ailments.

Vegetables contaminated by insects, damaged by wind or sun, old and unseasonal, uncooked in fat and not cleansed should be discarded.

Old rotten and unripe fruits, those damaged by insects, animals, snow and sun, or grown in unnatural places and wrong seasons are unfit to eat.

Individual properties are superseded by the steps in cooking and processing.

Other Ayurvedic suggestionsThe main meal should be lunch or as an early dinner. The quantity of food ingested should be no more than two cups together.

The other two meals should be small.Fruits should be taken alone, about one hour before or after meal, because fruits tend to ferment in the digestive tract.

Fruits should not be eaten with milk or other dairy products, because the acidity of the fruit in the stomach curdles the milk in the stomach.

The final and best suggestion is – consult on Ayurvedic doctor to determine your constitution (Vata, pitta or kapha) and let him devise your diet.

helps the digestive juices of the mouth to do their work and in addition, it gives time

One third of your stomach should be filled with food, one thrid with water and one thrid with air.

Do not overeat. When you over eat, the stomach distends itself. It expands like a balloon and if overeating is regularly done, the stomach will demand additional food. Overeating also results in the production of toxins in the digestive tract.

1. Who is a Guru/ Swamiji?Who ever teaches Brahma Gyan (Knowledge to reach God - The Supreme power) is a Guru/ Swamiji or Spiritual Master. A Spiritual Guru is the external manifestation of God. He is the personification of Vedas. He is empowered by the Lord

to deliver the conditional Souls. Sometimes the Lord Himself becomes the Spiritual Master like Sri.Dhakshinamoorthy, who taught every thing in silence to his disciples Sanaka, Sananta, Sanathana and Sanathkumara or like Sri.Krishna, who showed Arjuna his original form.

2. Are Guru/ Swamiji and Parmatma one?Guru/ Swamiji is the form of Parmatma.

3. Do you talk with God? How can we know? Those who have attained such a state can know. Just as I have not learnt English and so cannot understand if someone speaks in English. Similarly those who know the language of God can only understand.

4. What should be relationship between a true Guru and disciple? That cannot be explained through language. It can be only expressed though feelings of heart.

5. Swamiji, Total Person like Krishna failed to satisfy his dear most friend and devotee Arjuna through his words which runs through 18 chapters of Geeta. Ultimately Krishna succeeds in dispelling Arjuna’s doubts only by unfolding himself, exposing his universal form. Then why don’t you show us your original form? You are all my ‘Virat Swaroop’. I am there in all of you and all of you are in me. You have only to trust. The moment you develop firm faith, you will see me everywhere.

6. Dear Mahatma, Lord Krishna says in Gita - “Everyone has to hear the fruits of his Karmas.” Can Guru save his disciple from punishment of his irreligious acts? One cannot escape from Karma-Phal. Karma or Destiny can not be changed. That is a universal law. Nature never changes its rules. But a Brahma Gyani, Brahma Nista Guru can help his devotee, if his faith and devotion on to Guru is unshakeable. Suppose a person has to fall from the 7th floor of a building due to his previous Karmas. No one can save him from falling, because this is his Karma’s matured fruit. But a Mahatma, a Satguru can help the person, making him fall on some truck full of Dunlop or cart carrying cotton. The person is to fall this is his Karma’s punishment. But he will be saved from hurt or injury by any means. This is Guru’s help.

7. Dear Holiness Sri Selvam Siddhar, what is difference between Atma and Parmatma?Atma and Parmatma are one and the same. The whole modern civilization is operating on the misunderstanding that body is the self, but this is the mentality of animals as they are not having

Buddhi for self-realization.

8. Swamiji, by surrendering to Guru, what does one get? By taking the shelter of a bonafied Spiritual Master and obeying his instructions with firm faith and devotion, one gets knowledge, detachment and ultimate Liberation (Moksha).

9. Satguruji, Our Vedanta declares, “Destiny is irrevocable and unavoidable.” Then why one should unnecessarily bother and labor hard?It is indeed true that one would get only what is destined for him. However it behaves one to make a clear and proper distinction, between where it is appropriate to be resigned to one’s fate and where it is appropriate to exert personal effort. Securing a job is a matter of destiny, but having secured one, to sustain it with sincerity is a matter of personal efforts. To acquire or come into wealth is dictated by destiny, but how to use that wealth for a good purpose is a matter of personal choice and efforts. Whatever one is given by destiny, what one gets is his destiny; But how one uses it is his freedom of choice and efforts. This is called as Purushartha or New Karmas.

10. Swamiji, is it true that Heaven and Hell are only on this Earth?Heaven and Hell on this earth are only samples. As per our Holy Scriptures, there are eighteen varieties of Heavens and Hells. Among them one type of

each is here on this earth. They are like samples. When a trader, like a cloth merchant, comes to you to fetch order, he only brings his samples to show you. Again a grain merchant will only show samples of grains. He does not carry his godown with him. Likewise nature has created only one sample of Heaven and Hell here on earth.

11. Priya Swamiji, how one can live without sufferings?By simply observing without reacting. By simply examining any phenomenon objectively with equanimity, with a balanced mind. Like during meditation one feels pain in knee. Now, if he can learn just to observe the physical pain, if one can examine the sensation of pain objectively like a doctor examining someone else’s pain. Then one can see that pain itself is changing. It does not remain forever, it comes and goes, every moment it changes, but you-the observer-remain the same, unchangeable. If one understands this by personal experience, one can find that pain can no longer overwhelm and control him. Perhaps it goes away, perhaps not; but it does not matter. One cannot suffer from pain any more, because now he observes it with detachment.

12. How do I figure out what is my life’s purpose?Look into your life and find your aim in life. Do not make a choice on the basis of your current emotion, but on the sum total

of the inclinations in your life. Arrive at a conclusion. Try to project yourself to the end of your life and in the last minute of your life, what would you like to feel about yourself? Aim all your choice and actions on that basis. If after you’ve made a thorough search you have not found the answer and feel the need for spiritual guidance, then find a guide and ask.

13. Why am I so indecisive? Why do I not have will power? When one is indecisive or when one lacks will power, one has an emotional need which is not yet fulfilled. Examine that and discover the need which is not fulfilled and one will stop being indecisive.

14. How do I reconcile spiritual life and family/worldly life? I want to spend my time meditating and giving service. However, there are family and work demands. How do I create a balance?Love and service begin at home. If you have not learned to serve the people in your immediate circle unselfishly, any service given outside that circle also will be polluted by the elements of ego. There is no sadhana greater than that of a householder. The art of life consists of resilience, which one has to learn to practice in family life. The family becomes your crucible and your touchstone. I always test people’s spiritual progress by observing the state of their relationships. If their relationships have become sweeter, more unselfish, resilient, less demanding, then I conclude that one is making progress in meditation. Otherwise there is something missing both in meditation and in service.

Then there is another dimension. Common people use only a fraction of the surface of their minds for all their activities, which is like the waves in the shallows at the beach. At greater depths, the mediator discovers layers of the mind ocean which are ever in silence. One who has learned the art of karma yoga, the practice of yoga while performing actions, remains in touch with the silent depths while still acting in the world. But this is an art that can only be learned by close association with an advanced teacher/Guru whose formula for life is: Eat only while you are fasting, speak only when are in silence, act only while you are still.

15. Swamiji, How does one balance common sense and faith when making a decision? In other words, when should common sense prevail and when should faith prevail?Look within. When there is no doubt in your mind, common sense and faith has merged into one. Analyze your doubts. Or as Lord Rama said, “Doubt your doubts” and you may arrive at faith. Actually there is no definite answer to this question. One should learn to listen to one’s inner self but first learn to distinguish between inner self and psychological conditioning. This distinction is most important. Unfortunately, almost all students I have met call their psychological conditioning as their inner self. That is not the path from conditioning to the unconditioned self. Have faith only in the unconditioned self.

16. Pranams Swamiji. It is stated that we have two alive matters in our body, soul & God. So our energy, movement etc. in the body are due to power of God or independent power of soul? If it is power/energy of soul then what is the effect of God residing in our body? First, God resides in our body. His nature being omnipresent. Second, if God will not reside in body then neither soul nor body will function. so, the main source to make not only human body but entire universe to function is the almighty God, but, no doubt that, all souls living in human body are free to do good or bad deeds at their own.

17. Dear Siddhar Ji, daily I look at the maximum actor, actress. Will this spoil my spiritual development?Yes, in most of the fields actor and actresses are there and that is why, spiritual field has not been left untouched . Secondly, all living beings are acting in the universal theatre on the platform of earth and the greatest producer and director i.e. Almighty God witnesses everybody and onwards good and bad results of the acting in shape of happiness and sorrows respectively. So, every actor/actress must be cautious of refraining from doing sins, knowing that Almighty God witnesses all deeds and gives us punishment.

18. Revered Swamiji, Bless me and my

family and help us to do the right things needed by God.My blessings to you, dear Kid. I, first of all, appreciate your pious desire, I heartily bless you and your family for long, happy life and get success at each and every step of life while doing pious deeds.

19.I am not well. I am unmarried and want to keep a fast for Lord Shiva on special days. Should I keep the fast or not?I would advice you not to keep fast. You must always take care of your health. In Vedas it is said as “Sareeram Aadhyam kalu dharma saadhanam”(the physical body is the base for doing or adopting the proper dharma in the proper way).

20. Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar Ji ,I need a powerful prayer or mantra or sloka or any chant to get success in my love with friend and to make my present love life to turn as a successful love marriage life.

First of all, I would like to advise you that the sign of best lover is that he would never touch the opposite sex before marriage, if you also maintain your purity and then you marry with your lover then sure your married life would be happy. I bless you, for the same.

21. Pranam, Swamiji. Kindly request you to guide us for the below mentioned subjects. (1) We sometimes read/hear that very young child chants Sanskrit slokas or verses/sastras etc. by heart. It is said that due to previous births’ knowledge that child remembers those. Whether it is possible? Since it is explained by you only yogi who has realized God can know his previous births.

(2) It is stated that our present life is prarabadh based on past life’s deeds and we should discharge our duties as stated in Vedas which will destroy our sanchit karmas. So Swamiji, whether our life or age is fixed from our birth? If it was fixed on birth or before, then whether by discharging moral duties as per Vedas (listening Vedas from learned Acharya, doing Gayatri havan daily both times, doing ashtang yoga etc.) the age of our present life gets increased and better? Or whether after such deeds also our present life is fixed and result of such deed will be

given in next life only?

(3) As stated Raja Dashrath had 3 wives and from each of them he had sons. Swamiji, whether this is correct? Whether Vedas allow this, since king Dashrath was also a yogi and scholar of Vedas. We request to please clear this doubt. Pranam. My blessings to you………., (1). No, It is not possible for a child to talk or recite Sanskrit slokas without learning the same from a learned Acharya of Vedas in present life. First of all general public does not know about the Vedas and therefore public is not able to decide whether the child is reciting Veda mantras or any other Sanskrit slokas. Secondly, if Veda mantras due to the pious result of the deeds of the previous life are chanted by an ordinary boy or girl who has not learnt Vedas from present alive learned Acharya of Vedas then, the boy/girl etc., will also experience the divine pleasure of realizing God and in the said condition/situation, the boy or girl will never chant the Veda mantras publicly. They will enjoy within themselves only.

(2). Yes, it is true that our present life has to face the result of past lives’ deeds-good or bad in the shape of pleasure and sorrows respectively. Now, you see there are three types of karmas. In present life, we are also free to do kriyamann karmas either good or bad. So, human-life is especially meant for worshipping the God as per Vedic philosophy. To know and do pious deeds only by which the effect of bad deeds as well as sorrows is wiped away and a person gets long and happy life. Yes, if a devotee follows the eternal Vedic philosophy which emanates direct from God at the beginning of the earth then by listening Vedas from learned Acharya, doing Havan/Yagna both times, daily, name jaap of God, hard practice of Ashtang Yoga philosophy which also emanates from Vedas, while discharging all his mortal duties towards family, society, nation etc., then automatically his life will become happy and long.

(3). King Dashrath was a learned scholar of Vedas, his spiritual master Maharishi Vasishta, who was a philosopher and great scholur of Vedas and Yoga Philosophy

lived along with King Dashrath, so there was no doubt that three marriages of King Dashrath were performed in consultation with Guru Vasishta. So, being Rajarishi, King Dashrath could marry.

22. What should I do to earn money? First of all we should know that the lord of universe is Almighty God. He is the only empowered to give us assets etc. Therefore, we must first worship Him daily according to Vedas and after seeking His blessings, a person should do hard-working with full concentration. God sure will fulfill the desire.

23. Priya Guruji, what is the meaning of the word Pitarji. Can I have a detailed information on it?Pitar means who nurses us. So our parents, grandparent and even the forefathers who have gone to heavenly abode are called pitar, is the word used as a mark of respect. Another meaning of pitar is learned Acharya of Vedas who gives us spiritual knowledge.

24. I have tried hard to join Army but I have not succeeded. I want to earn money. I am pursuing MBA . So, guide me what is better for me to earn money. To listen the voice of heart which says go and join army at any cost or listen to mind which always follow the path of money. If you are desirous of service then go to army. If you are desirous of earning money, then MBA study will be more beneficial for you.

25. Pranam Swamiji. My question is what should I take after science or commerce? What will I become in life.

My blessings to you. The study is based on the interest of a student, so take that subject which is of your interest. Otherwise, you may do higher studies and can either be a lecturer or a professor or a certified public accountant.

26. I read the Mahabharata several years ago. It gave me an indication that Karna ( The first son of Kunti) was non-vegetarian. Is this true?Karnna and other five Pandavas, their parents and forefathers etc., were all vegetarian, because they followed the eternal path of Vedas where there is

no scope of taking non-vegetarian and addiction etc.

27. Namaste from all us, Guruji Maharaj, of us. Guruji, The body of a normal human is cremated once the soul leaves the body, but in some literatures it is said that the body of yogi is to be buried. Why so? Please explain Guruji.

My blessings to you all, my kids. Infact, the body of yogi should also be burnt. Yajur Veda mantra 40-15 of the fifth Kanda clearly states to burn all the human-bodies.

28. We would like to come for the Yagna to be held on the occasion of new year. We need your aagya in this regard so that we can book the tickets at the earliest. With infinite pranams at your lotus feet. My blessings to you all, my kids. Yes, my son, you may come to attend Athrava Soolini Maha Yagna on new year day.

29. Respected Swamiji, Namasthe. Thank you for answering my previous two questions submitted to you. I read your questions & answers section regularly. I have three questions today.

1) According to Jyothish shastra, Sun, Moon, Raaghu, Kethu are treated as planets. But in Science Sun is light & energy provider for Planets. Moon is a satellite of earth. Raaghu / Kethu are not in Science. Should we believe jyotish sastra or science? Will Raaghu / Kethu affect our life?

2) I was told that Sani dasa runs for 19 years in a person’s life time. The person will have most difficult times during that period and Shani dev would ruin the life of the person during that period. It is true?

3) Planet Saturn and Mars are far away from Earth and they don’t have power as per scientific research. But in Vedic astrology Saturn (Sani) and Mars (Kuja/Mangal) are harmful to human beings. What is your opinion on it? Please reply.

Thanking you. My blessings to you. You are most welcome. The following are the answers for your questions.

(i) Yes, in science also there are nine planets in solar system including Raaghu and Kethu but their names are being recited in English. God has created the universe and every matter has been made for the benefit of human-beings. Naturally, all the planets are of use for all living beings. There is not even the most minute matter of the universe which is useless. So, we must believe in science which also emanates from Vedas. Raaghu and Kethu being non-alive cannot give bad effect on our lives but a person’s deeds (good or bad) affect his life accordingly.

(ii) No, it does not seem to be true that Sani Dev runs for 19 years in a person’s life creating difficulties in his life and ruining it. You know, like earth, all planets are non-alive and can never be harmful for living beings on their own.

(iii) I‘ve told you that every planet has been created by God for the benefit of human-beings. However, Sun gives us life and energy because without sun-rays crops can’t grow/ripen. On the other hand, several people die due to sunstroke. Reason behind that God tells all human-beings to perform Yajna/hawan daily to get timely rains. Sama Veda states that pious smoke of hawan reaches the outer layers of atmosphere up till Sun and then the sun-rays prove beneficial to everyone and do not cause any harm.

Nowadays, the problem is that people do not listen to Vedas and do not get to know about the real worship and the eternal path of the Vedas like Yajna / havan, nama jaap of God etc., which gives innumerable benefits to the living

# 1.Will my God give the things I need?During a Satsang somebody asked Swamiji Selvam Siddhar following question”. We say God is fair, but we see good people are suffering and bad happy in their lives, why is that?”

Here is the answer Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar: For each person, when they are born, this comes back to the destiny part, there is karma / destiny. Somebody who does bad, and is thinking that this is the reality, do you think that he will have

God? Hm? It will be more difficult for this person to go away from all his things and realize God. Whereas good people who are always suffering, always focus on God and say, “Oh God, please make my suffering go away.” They always pray to the Divine to help them. Do you know Krishna? He was alive about 5000 years ago. The same like christions have Jesus, the Hindus have him. He had an Aunt, called Ghandari, and there was a big war where all the sons of his aunt were killed. When Krishna came to his auntie and said, “What do you want?“. Do you know what she answered? “My Lord, give me many problems, so that I can always remember you.” So, when people have everything and are always happy, they forget about God. But when problems arise again in the life, they run again to seek the Divine help. As you said, God is fair. He always gives.

#2 To meet the God?Once there was a boy who went to see God and on the way he met a great Sadhu standing on one leg with the hands up. So when he went to meet God, the Sadhu said to him “As you are going to meet God, I have one question: Ask God when will I attain liberation?” So the boy met God and asked all the questions. On the way back he met the Sadhu, who asked “So…have you met God?” He said “Yes, I met him.” And he said “What did God say?” The boy answered “well, the Sadhu still has some karmic things to do. He still has to take birth three times before attaining me.” Well, that moment he was very enraged and said “All my tapasya, all my sadhana that I have been doing and still I have to take birth three times!” But the boy was very calm and joyful. So the Sadhu said “Oh, I am sure that you are at your last time here.” The boy said “Oh, my dear Sadhuji, it’s not like that. Do you see this tamarind tree?” [ A leaf of the tamarind tree is very, very smalll, so there are billions of it] “I have to take as much births and then only I will attain Him.” Then the Sadhu looked at him. “ Are you stupid? Why are you so happy?” Then he said, “Well, it doesn’t matter. I know that at the end I will attain Him.” At that moment he heard a Divine voice saying, “Throughout all these tapasya the Sadhu had been doing, all the lives of this boy with the pure heart are erased and he attains ‘mukthi’ in this life.”

This shows that it’s not about how much one has done, but how one is doing it. Love has to be there. If you do things out of love, the Divine will come to you in a run . You just need to do one step. This one step is to do it with love. Then He/she will do everything. She will do everything. But as long as there is not this one step from your side, it will be difficult.

The Divine Mother will help you to become like that, so that this one step can be done with a pure heart. Jagadamba Mata ki- Jai!

# 3. Service with Devotion:Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar once told us an interesting story from the life of Sri Ramakrishna, which shows us how important it is to perform seva (selfless service) and to help others: Once there was a doctor. Of course he took his job very serious and he was very satisfied. Whenever people came to him to get healed, he was very happy about it. But his happiness had only short duration. He was always wondering “Why I am happy, but yet it lasts very short.” We all know about this happiness. So he went to Ramakrishna. He was a Saint in India, who lived during last century. He said “Ramakrishnaji, tell me how you are happy? I feel this happiness, but it’s very short.” Ramakrishna said to him: “Sri Swami Vishwananda once told us the famous parable about the five blind men and the elephant:”

Once there were five blind men. All of them were blind and would sit under a tree. All day long they would talk, talk and talk. So one day, as it was very hot, a huge elephant came and stood under the tree . Although they were blind they could hear. So they heard that somebody had come. Then all five got up and started walking around. They could feel that there is something in front of them. The first one said: “What is this!? This is a huge wall made of mud. But I don’t understand how this wall has moved here?” The second one was holding the tusk. Feeling it, he said: “Oh, these are two speers made of ivory!” The third one was holding the tail and said: “No, no, no- you are wrong. This is a rope, a big huge rope!” fine. The fourth one was holding the trunk of the elephant and he said: “No, no, no- this is nothing of what you have said. This is a snake hanging from the tree!” and the fifth one said: “No, you are all wrong! This is the trunk of a tree!”

So, there was a big discussion among all. Everyone was fighting with each other and was proclaiming: “I am right, I am right, I am right!” At that moment a small boy was passing. Looking at them and seeing how they were fighting, he said: “Oh, you five blind men, what are you quarrelling for? Why are you hanging on this elephant like that!?” When they heard: ‘an elephant’, they all got shocked, thinking ‘An elephant!?’ After some time, when the boy went, the first one said: “We are not just blind, I think we are also stupid!” The second one said: “No, no, no. I was a bit confused when I said and what I said!” and the third one said: “I thought it was something like that, but I didn’t say it!” . Then the fourth one said: “Well, we were just talking loudly whatever was passing through our mind!” Finally the fifth one said: “You know, I feel so foolish! We could have just asked someone and would have been much faster!”

The same thing with the humon being also: humanity is blind to God-realization. Only someone who has realized

the Divine can really guide you! Only someone who knows the path can really lead you. Otherwise you will be like these blind men- you will be touching everything, left and right. It will not lead you anywhere. So just surrender!y dear doctor, I know that you help people and you feel this love, but one thing: Your love is based on how much you get as payment.” So go and help people. It’s not that you should not take money- take, but once a week give free consultation. You will see that this love inside of you will grow more and more.” And of course He practiced it. After a few months he came back to Sri Ramakrishna and fell down at the feet of Sri. Ramakrishna. He said “My Lord, I have done what you have told me and I’m the happiest person. Now I don’t even do only one time a week selfless service, but I do it two or three times a week.”

# 4. Thoughts- Negative and Positive? You know one thing: on the spiritual path the utmost thing that we have to do is the control of one’s mind. We say ‘Watch our thought’. What is this thought? A thought is an image. A thought is a creation. A thought is an imagination, but why is it said that we have to watch our thoughts? Because most of the time the thought makes us negative. We have to watch, we have to have it under control, but very often it’s quite difficult? Our thoughts make us who we are, because we always run behind them. A few days ago, there was a reading in the Temple, where there was a saying from a Saint, from saint Akasthiya from his writings that said “Let your thoughts be in hell, but you rejoice in the Divine.” I commented a little bit on that. I said “Nowadays, the moment they see their thoughts running to hell, everybody runs with the thoughts to hell. Your thoughts are jumping, wavering and “bow”. You also jump behind them and do the same. When we watch ourselves, we see that very often we like to speak out what we have in our mind. We like to tell everybody how great we are. We like to say: “Oh, I have seen that light, I have seen

Page 47: Spiritual Karma Magazine 49. Published by Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar-Dr Commander Selvam-Shiva Vishnu Temple

Karma 45

this and I have seen that. I have felt this and I have felt that. “ Why? To feed the thoughts, so that the thought can become bigger. It’s like when you analyze a reptile. A reptile can be very soft, going it’s way. The moment it falls in a pit, it will try it’s best to come out. But the moment that reptile comes out of that pit, the reptile will be more aggressive than ever. That is how our thoughts are also. The moment we let it out, it’s in flame with this rigorous power, saying “Yes, I am out.” It’s not what goes inside the person, which makes one person polluted, but what comes out of the person. The Gita said it: “The controlled mind is your best friend. The uncontrolled mind is your worst enemy.” The controlling of our thoughts- Like I said: The way we think, the way we are.

# 5.The creation of Godessess Gayathri DeviSwamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar tells a story about Brahma and Saraswati and explains how Gayatri Devi was created: Of course there are many stories that relate her to Goddess Saraswati.

One of the stories is that the first being that Brahma, not Brahmin, but. Saraswati is the creativity power of Brahma, the Creator.

Brahma was so much in love with Saraswati that he created four heads to look at Saraswati.

Then He made His proposal to Saraswati, but Saraswati said ‘No’. Even when He called her ‘Brahma-Patni’, she was never married to Brahma. It’s not a marriage, that they got married, but it was a spiritual marriage.

After Brahma had created everything, He had the great desire, wanting her so much, that He created another head, a fifth head, so that all His eyes can be on Saraswati.

Wherever Saraswati will go, Brahma will be there. All the form that Saraswati appeared or transformed herself would also be transformed and manifested by Brahma. Finally Saraswati was really, really, really angry. (Laughter) (Swamiji laughing). But she controlled herself and went to Shiva. As she was passing by Shiva, Shiva was as usual in meditation. Such a great ascetic. But Brahma also was following. His mind was so much on Saraswati and also on this deep desire inside of Him that Shiva came out of His meditation. When He came out of the meditation, seeing how Brahma is, He got very furious. At that moment, He threw His trident and chopped one of His head. Of course this is a story. He chopped one of Brahma’s head. When this was done Saraswati said to Brahma “You are the Creator, why all this?” Then she said “Wait for me. I will come.” Brahma waited for days together. Saraswati was inside a cave and didn’t come out. Years passed. He still was waiting. Hundreds and thousands of years passed. He got really tired. There was lake by the name Savitri. So Brahma fell in love with Savitri. Then when He was with Savitri, Saraswati

came. (Laughter) When Saraswati saw that Brahma is with Savitri, She became furious and cursed Brahma, that Brahma will never have temple. There are only two places in India, one in Tamil Nadu and one in the North, in Pushkar, that have temples of Brahma. So out of her anger Gayatri was created.

# 6.Siddhatri Yakshini and Lord ShivaOn the eighth day of Navaratri, the 26th September 2009, Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar told us a Story about Goddess Siddhidatri.

When we pray to Shiva Bhagawan, we know that Shiva is one of the Ultimate, but actually it’s Ma Siddhidatri who gives Shiva the power to liberate Himself.

There was one story how She swallowed Shiva. Shiva was talking and always explaining, because Shiva is the first Guru in the form of Dakshinamurti. So He was always explaining something I am hungry”, but Shiva didn’t bother about it. Mother requested again “Prabhu, I am hungry!!”. But again Shiva didn’t react. Then she said: “Listen Shiva, I am hungry right now!! (Laughter) And if you don’t listen to me, I am going to eat you!.” (Laughter) Saying that, She did swallow Shiva completely, showing that She is the Greatest and the power behind everything. Even the Yogis said “Without Shakti we are nothing. Without Shakti, even Shiva is just a corpse, nothing else.” So by devouring Shiva, She showed Her greatness and that everything merges into Her. All the power of creation, the power itself is Her. All the other Prakriti Shakti come out from her and merge into Her. So with a clear mind, with a clear heart, ask Mother Bhagavati

Devi, Durga, Jagadambiaki to help each one of us. And if we ever make any mistake, Ma shall forgive us all. She always does. Om Soolini Deviye Namha!!

# 7.Devotion, Bakthi, Proper, Discipline?During a Satsang Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar was once asked : Swami, would you please speak about the balance of Bhakti and discipline? What is the aspect of discipline in exercises and Sadhana?

Here is his answer:You see in Bhakti, devotion and discipline go together. Together with Bhakti you practice discipline. It is the discipline that you put towards yourself, so that you know how you have to do certain things and certain exercises that you do regularly.

This discipline is because you want something…You know that there is something greater that you want to achieve and you do anything for that. Whether you have to run or whether you have to speed up- you will do anything. That’s where the discipline comes from, that’s where the Sadhana comes from, and this is also a part of Bhakti. This is actually the beginning of Bhakti.

That devotion comes at a point, where you practice all this, but real devotion crosses all over this. There is a big different between discipline and Sadhana we start with discipline, we start with Bhakti and with certain Sadhana, where we throw ourselves into and which will lead us to surrender.

Until we don’t throw ourselves into something, it’s very difficult to surrender. To what we have to surrender? We don’t know, because the mind still plays a big role in everything, our mind still is in action with everything, but to calm this mind we need to do certain Sadhana.

This is where you take the step to throw yourself, saying “Yes”. You have the determination and you know you have the goal. You know, where it is leading you. You know the goal that you want to achieve and you throw yourself into it. So how do you want to achieve it? Do you want to put breaks and go slowly or do you want to go directly? There are many different ways.

# 8. Discipline and our Heart Problems?Discipline helps us to calm our mind. When because when the mind is very much agitated on the spiritual path, we can’t concentrate. We can’t really focus ourselves on our heart. So even if you want to focus yourself on your heart, your mind is jumping and wavering. So we do our Sadhana. We chant, we practice Yoga or we do Om Healing or Atma Kriya to calm the mind. It helps that we can listen more clearly to ourselves and realizes the Divine within ourselves. Not just tell somebody “Just do your Sadhana and meditate and you will attain God”... It’s true: If one is sincere towards oneself,

one will attain God, because God will come to that person and will manifest itself and the heart will manifest itself. But yet we look at the world and ask “How many people really are sincere towards themselves in that way?” We are so busy with what we see outside and what we think. We always want to analyze everything with our mind, that we give so much less importance to the heart, even when we know that “Yes, we have to be in the heart, but we see how dominant our mind is.” So without saying “Yes, I really want to follow strongly, I want to change and I want really to attain my goal, it’s difficult.” In outside we can say “Yes, yes, yes I want this”, but inside we say “Wow, it’s far away”. As long as you see this distance and are discouraged, you will not enjoy your practice. It doesn’t matter how big the distance is. Keep trying and never loose hope.

#9 Arjuna & Lord KrishnaDuring a Darshan to his Devotees during the Navarathri days of 2009 one day Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar told this story: After the battle of Kurukshetra, Arjuna and Krishna were walking together in the fields. Krishna raised his hand and said to Arjuna, “Look at these birds in the sky. How nice they are!”“Yes”, answered Arjuna, looking in the sky.

“But there are no birds”, said Krishna.

“No, there are no birds”, answered Arjuna.

“Look how nice these birds are”, said again Krishna. “They are really magnificent.”

“Yes”, said Arjuna. “These birds are really magnificent.”

“Why are you always repeating what I am saying?” asked Krishna, “There are no birds in the sky.”

“Yes, it is true. I don’t see any birds in the sky but I know that you could manifest at every moment, these birds and let them fly in the sky.” Arjuna had total faith in Krishna and had totally surrendered body, mind and soul to the Divine. He did not trust his mind or his eyes but he trusted every word from his Divine Sadguru.

# 10 : smile in the time of hardship in the life?Another inspiring story by Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar who is considered as a living God to his followers all over the world . Once there was a Rabbi. He was giving his discourse and his lecture. As he was talking to his students, there was a line which said “The one who is close to the Divine, the one who is close to God is the one who smiles in the midst of difficulties.” Then his students stopped him and said “Professor, Mr. Rabbi, reverent Sir, can you please explain us how it is possible that we can smile in times of difficulties? The Rabbi said “Well, it’s very difficult to answer this question, because when there are difficulties, I, myself forget

where the smile is gone. I forget how to smile.” It’s true: our mind is so engrossed into negativity, that we forget the reality. Saying so, he said “It’s very difficult for me to tell you how to smile in times of difficulties or in times of great tests. But I know one person in the village, who has gone through so many trials in his life. When he was just one week old, he lost his parents. Then later on in life, in everything that he did, he didn’t succeed, but he was always very joyful and smiling.” So they went to that person, knocked at the door, and an answer came “Who is it?”. The students said, “Oh, we are the students of the Rabbi, we came to ask you certain questions.” He replied” Tell me what questions do you have?” Then they said “Oh we came across this line in the Bible that said ‘The one, who is closest to God, smiles in the midst of difficulties’”. The man answered “Well you have come to the wrong address, because I am 78 years old. Yet I don’t know what difficulties are, so I can’t tell you how to smile in it.” So, know how close you are to the Divine, the difficulties transcend itself. How much your mind is focussed on the Divine or on your true Self? Everybody wants to attain this true Self, no? But everybody wants to attain the true Self only by being good. You don’t need to be good. You don’t need to pretend to be good. You just need to be yourself. Even if people think that you are bad, you have to know how you are.

# 11. Trust me…God never let you downAnother piece of information Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar from the Maha Sivaratri Day celebration at the Temple.

The power of chanting the name of God, it’s not only purifying the mind, it’s purifying the body and soul. When your mind is purified, you have a healthy mind. Your mind is positive. Eventually, your body will also be in a positive way. Your body will be healthy. How many times people who are ill surrender completely and say, “I’m fed up now. God, I’m praying to you and I surrender to you. Do whatever you want to do with me.” What happens then? The miracle happens. The miracle of faith. The miracle of love. The miracle of surrender. But nowadays people are so scared of surrender. They say, “I will surrender, but... what will happen? I will surrender, but how will I live?” This insecurity is already present. How can they trust when there’s insecurity? Only when there is complete trust in God, complete trust in your self and when you ask for God for Himself, He will give Himself to you. And trust what? Whatever He does is right, even if the mind doesn’t understand it, it is right.

THREE CHEERS TO COCONUT WATER!

Coconut water is one of the most delicious natural thirst quenchers in the world. Coconut water is the liquid endosperm inside young coconuts. As the coconut matures this liquid largely becomes absorbed into the flesh found in mature coconuts. Coconut water has long been a popular drink in the tropics. It is naturally fat-free and low in food energy (16.7 calories or 70 kJ per 100 g). Coconut water for drinking are packaged and sold in many places. These are typically Thai coconuts, whose outer green husk has been removed and the remainder wrapped in plastic. Coconut water can also be found in regular cans or tetra packs (and often has coconut pulp or coconut jelly added) and is also marketed as a sports drink because of its high potassium and mineral content which helps the body recover from rigorous exercise. The following is a short note on why one has to drink coconut water and what the benefits of drinking coconut water are.

Botanical name: Cocos nucifera, English name: Coconut, Hindi name: Nariyal, Sanskrit name: Narikela and the Tamil name: Thenkai. Coconut Water is more nutritious than whole milk - Less fat and NO cholesterol! Coconut Water is healthier than Orange Juice - Much lower calories. Coconut Water is better than processed baby milk- It contains lauric acid, which is present in mother’s milk. Coconut water is naturally sterile - Water permeates though the filtering husk! Coconut water is a universal donor-- It’s identical to human blood plasma. Coconut Water is a natural Isotonic Beverage - The same level we have in our blood. Coconut water has saved lives in 3rd world countries thru Coconut IV. Coconut water contains more potassium (at about 294 mg) than most sports drinks (117 mg) and most energy drinksCoconut water has less sodium (25 mg) where sports drinks have around 41 mg and energy drinks have about 200 mg. Coconut water has 5 mg of natural sugars where sports and energy drinks range from 10-25 mg of Altered Sugars. Coconut water is very high in Chloride at 118 mg, compared to sports drinks at about 39 mg. “Coconut water is the very stuff of nature, biologically pure, full of natural sugars, salts, and vitamins to ward off fatigue... and is the next wave of energy drinks BUT natural!”, according to Mortin Satin, Chief of the United Nation’s Food & Agriculture organization.

K i d s CornerOne day, Nasruddin came riding into town. The people

stopped him to ask, “Why are you sitting back to front on your donkey?” He replied, “I know where I am going, I want to see where I have been.” Later that evening, Nasruddin was cooking up some things. He went to his neighbor and asked for a pot and promised to return it the next day. A knock, knock came on the neighbor’s door the next day. Nasruddin had come to return the pot. The neighbor looks at his pot and inside was one smaller. The neighbor said, “There is a small pot inside the one I loaned you.” Nasruddin told him, “The pot gave birth.” The neighbor was quite pleased to hear this and accepted the two pots. The very next morning, Nasruddin knocked on the neighbor’s door to borrow a larger pot than the previous one. The neighbor happily abides the request. A week passed, without Nasruddin knocking to return the pot. The neighbor and Nasruddin bump into each other at the bazaar a few days latter. Nasruddin’s neighbor asked, “Where is my pot?” “It’s dead,” said Nasruddin. “But how can that be?” queried the neighbor. Nasruddin pointed out, “If a pot can give birth, then a pot can also die.”

One afternoon, Nasruddin and his friend were sitting in a cafe, drinking tea, and talking about life and love. How come you never got married, Nasruddin asked his friend at one point. Well, said Nasruddin, to tell you the truth, I spent my youth looking for the perfect woman. In Cairo, I met a beautiful and intelligent woman, with eyes like dark olives, but she was unkind. Then in Baghdad, I met a woman who was a wonderful and generous soul, but we had no interests

in common. One woman after another would seem just right, but there would always be something missing. Then one day, I met her. She was beautiful, intelligent, generous and kind. We had everything in common. In fact she was perfect. Well, said Nasruddin’s friend, and asked what happened? Why didn’t you marry her? Nasruddin sipped his tea reflectively. Well, he replied, it is a sad thing. Seems she was looking for the perfect man.

Once upon a time, Nasruddin went to the marketplace and put up a sign that read: “Whoever has stolen my donkey, p l e a s e return it to me and I will give it to

them.” “Nasruddin!” exclaimed the townspeople, “Why would you put up such a sign?” “There are two great gifts in life,” replied Nasruddin. “One is to find something that you’ve lost and the other is to give something that you love away.”

Mullah Nasruddin had a beautiful daughter; the desire of all the evil eyes of the men lived in his village. Everyone sought the hand of the fair maiden, but Mullah Nasruddin protected her from the outside world, saving her for the wealthy young khan who lived just outside the village.

At last the young Khan came to

ask for the hand of the beautiful maiden. Mullah Nasruddin drove a hard

bargain and was to receive the highest bride-price ever bargained for in the entire region. With the usual

Muslim regard for ceremony, Mullah Nasruddin insisted on a long waiting-period before the wedding vows could be taken. It seemed that the young and beautiful daughter of Mullah Nasruddin had a mind and a body of her own. She fell in love with a young stalwart ne’er-do-well in the village, who constantly showered her with attention as she went to the nearby well to gather water in the morning and at dusk. Her trips to get water began to take longer periods of time. Most people in the village know what was happening, but no one dared to tell Mullah Nasruddin. The time for the wedding approached and the young, wealthy

Khan came to collect his bride. Mullah Nasruddin brought her to greet her betrothal. Lo and behold! She was well pregnant by this time. The young, rich Khan was horrified, and turned on the Mullah Nasruddin, demanding to know why such a thing had occurred. And when Mullah Nasruddin merely replied that such things are normal when people get married, the young, rich Khan stormed out of Mullah Nasruddin’s compound, and said that he withdrew his offer of marriage to the young beautiful daughter of Mullah Nasruddin and therefore would expect a return on the down payment on the bride price. Mullah Nasruddin, genuinely shocked, called after the young, rich Khan and the young Khan returned. “Let us be sensible about this,” pleaded Mullah Nasruddin. “Actually, I should double the bride price now that my daughter is truly pregnant and can give you a son.” The young Khan, even more horrified, stuttered and asked, “In the name of Allah, why?” Mullah Nasruddin calmly replied, “Why just last week I delivered a cow to a man to whom I had sold the cow several months before. In the interim period, the cow became pregnant, and when I delivered the cow, I demanded and received twice the original amount. Now what is so different between a cow and a daughter?”

Nasruddin heard that there was a banquet being held in the nearby town, and that everyone was invited. He made his way there as quickly as he could. When the Master of Ceremonies saw him in his ragged clothes, he seated him in the most inconspicuous place, far from the great table where the most important people were waiting on hand and foot. Nasruddin saw that it would be an hour at least before the waiters reached where he was sitting. So he got up and went home. He dressed himself in a magnificent sable cloak and turban and returned to feast. As soon as the heralds of the Emir, his host, saw this splendid sight they started to beat the drum of welcome and sound the trumpets in a manner befitting a visitor of high rank. The Chamberlain came out of the palace himself, and conducted the magnificent Nasruddin to a place almost next to the Emir. A dish of wonderful food was immediately placed before him. Without a pause, Nasruddin began to rub handfuls of it into his turban and cloak. “Your Eminence,” said the prince, “I am curious as to your eating habits, which are new to me.” “Nothing

special,” said Nasruddin; “the cloak got me in here and got me the food. Surely it deserves its portion.”

One day Nasruddin was taking a walk in his village, when several of his neighbors approached him. “Nasruddin Hoja!” they said to him, “you are so wise and holy! Please take us as your pupils to teach us how we should live our lives, and what we should do!” Nasruddin paused, then said “Alright; I will teach you the first lesson right now. The most important thing is to take very good care of your feet and sandals; you must keep them clean and neat at all times.” The neighbors listened attentively until they glanced

down at his feet, which were in fact quite dirty and shod in old sandals that seemed about to fall

apart. “But Nasruddin Hoja,” said one of them, “your feet are

terribly dirty, and your

sandals are a

m e s s ! How do

you expect us to follow

your teachings if you don’t

carry them out yourself?” “Well,”

replied Nasruddin, “I don’t go around

asking people how I should live my life

either, do I.”

One day Mullah Nasruddin went to market to buy new

clothes. First he tested a pair of trousers. He didn’t like

the trousers and he gave back them to the shopkeeper. Then he tried a robe which had same price as the trousers. Mullah Nasruddin was pleased with the robe and he left the shop. Before he climbed on the donkey to ride home he stopped by the shopkeeper and the shop-assistant. “You didn’t pay for the robe,” said the shopkeeper. “But I gave you the trousers instead of the robe, isn’t it?” replied Mullah Nasruddin. “Yes, but you didn’t pay for the trousers, either!” said the shopkeeper. “But I didn’t buy the trousers,” replied Mullah Nasruddin. “I am not so stupid to pay for something which I never bought.”

Spiritual salvation for

the education problems of the kids.

The services of Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar to the suffering human race start from the beginning of a human’s life. His first step to find out the root cause of the suffering is casting the horoscope. There are a lot of techniques to prepare an individual’s horoscope/birth chart/janmakshar kundali. Out of all the techniques the technique explained in Atharva Veda is the most accurate and precious. There are twelve houses in a horoscope. Each house is to be viewed in twelve different angles. So, the entire horoscope is to be viewed in 144 different angles and aspects. Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar has mastered this art. He is blessed by Lord Shiva and Atharva Veda Yaksha/Yakshini devathas. He does a lot services for the betterment of the human race. His Vedic astrological services mainly focus on solving the problems. In this we will see some of the services rendered by Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar for solving the problems related to the education of kids.

According to the Vedas, the education is divided into various parts. They are kinder garden, primary, elementary, middles school, high school, college and university grades. Some kids will be bright up to the school level. When they enter into college they will become very dull. Some kids will be very dull in their school studies but they will shine well in their higher studies. Some will get the Master’s degree or Doctorates just very easily but some will have to face lot of disabilities in getting their masters or doctorates. The parents of some children will be very rich but they will not be ready to spend for the higher education of their own children. The parents of some students will be very poor but they will not be able to spend more for the education of their kids due to the poverty. Some rich children will

get scholarships and aid to continue the education from the government. Whereas some poor deserving children will not be able to get the required financial help from the government or the universities. What is the reason for all these? Atharva Veda tells the answer in a single word. The answer is “planets”. How to solve the problems caused by the planets? Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar scrutinizes the horoscopes of the kids and the parents. Normally the regular astrologers will go through only the horoscopes of the kids but not the parents. But Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar scrutinizes the horoscopes of the parents and the kids to solve these kinds of problems. For example, if a telephone is not working properly, both the receiving side and transmission side are to be examined and corrected. Like that the kids are the receivers and the parents are the transmitters. Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar prescribes Atharva Vedic rituals of Yaksha/Yakshini devathas to solve the problems. If the problem is related only the planets affecting the knowledge side of the students, different Yakshini devathas Thripura Bhairavi, Swetha Devi, Deepthi Devi are to be worshipped through rituals. If the problems are related to the mind of the kids, the Yakshini devathas named Kantakarnee, Jayanthi and Surabhi yakshini are to be worshipped through the rituals. Out of these three yakshinis Surabhi Yakshini is explained in the Vishnu darmotthara Thantra of Atharva Veda. These three yakshinis fortify one’s mind and bless with a mental strength and memory power.

If the problem is considered with the minds of the parents the Yakshini devathas Krishna Yakshini and Indrakshi Yakshini are to be worshipped through rituals. To improve the financial status of the parents, the Yakshini devathas Shivalakshmi Yakshini and Sowbagya Sri Yakshini are to be worshipped through the rituals. As all the mantras of the Atharva Veda yaksha/yakshini devathas are considered as the most secret and sacred, these mantras and rituals are to be initialized only by the learned Atharva Vedic scholar. To have spiritual salvations for the problem faced by the human race through the Atharva Veda Yaksha / Yakshini devathas and to consult Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar contact Toll free@1-888-808-1418 or email to [email protected]

Krishna Leela

Lord Krishna and Arjuna arrived a little way from the battlefield of “Maha Bharat Yuddh” and had a deep discussion over the quarrel between Pandavas and Dhuriyodhanas. They were kidth and kins. On account of greediness, the unjust Dhuriyodhana refused to maintain justice and refused to obey their commitment to hand over the country and lands to the “Pandavas”.

Arjuna felt it sympathetically and was even ready to go to forest with his brothers. It was not out of fearfullness. He was the greatest warrior of the time. The lives of lakh ( hundred thousands) of soldiers from both sides of Dhuriyodhana were at stake and Arjuna would have to be involved. His kind heart did not want to put an end to the precious lives of all his relatives, grand fathers, cousins, brothers, and sons. He would have preferred to go moneyless and landless.

Lord Krishna, in order to maintain justice, clarified the confusion of Arjuna, who had lived for almost 15 years away from his country and had met with several difficulties all along the way with his brothers and his

family. “Unjustice should be curbed and justice should be protected,” this was the teachings of Lord Krishna.

Lord Krishna is “Sri Man Narayana Moorthy” the incarnation of Maha Vishnu. When the appeal of the Saints and Rishis came to him for the rescue of justice, Lord Maha Vishnu promised to curtail the arrogant demons and save the world from the clutches of injustice.

He made his “Krishna Avathar” and came into the world as a child to Vasudeva and Devaki. As lad he killed the Asura “Kamsa” and maintained justice. Rishis, Saints, and the people of world worshipped Lord Krishna for his acts and deeds. Lord Krishna’s further commitment was to provide the welfare of Pandavas. The arrogant and adamant Duriyodhanas should be punished for their guilty proceedings against the Pandavas. It was at this time when Arjuna was hesitating to raise his bow and arrow against his rivals.

Lord Krishna needed to teach the standards and the principles of human lives. And he would expose the secret of his birth. To unveil the facts and the meaning of earthly life, and about the maintenance of justice and peace, he undertook the mission of the Krishna Avathar. For Arjuna, Lord Krishna was the brother in law, since Arjuna married “Subadhra”, who is none other than the sister of Lord Krishna. Now was the time for The Lord to reveal the fact that his incarnation as ‘Krishna’ would have fulfillment only when Duriyodhana’s injustice met with judgement. Lord Krishna showed his mighty “Viswa Roopa Dharshan”.

If a thousand Suns combine, what brightness could be reached? If a human body stretches from the earth to the sky what endless height could be reached? If one head on a body multiplies to thousands and thousands in number, where could it end?

In such a magnificent way Lord Krishna, with numerous hands and weapons, showed his divine presence to “Arjuna” who bowed down at the feet of Lord, and began to hear his version of reality. The “Bhagavat Geetha” Upadesa commenced, and as a humble disciple, Arjuna heard it with all his obedience. The life we are living now is not our only one. We have been through many.

That means that prior to this birth we had links with this world in other forms. The spark of Awareness within us is the soul which is defined as Self. No wind can blow

Page 56: Spiritual Karma Magazine 49. Published by Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar-Dr Commander Selvam-Shiva Vishnu Temple

Karma 54

it away, and no fire can burn it. That has no beginning and no end. That spark of life keeps moving on from one body to next. At one time you have the body of a child, and then you change in to a young person, then to middle age, followed by the body of an old person. Yet in all those bodies you feel yourself to be the same you. Because you are the same as you existed in the beginning, your conclusion inclinds towards your body only.

But you and your body are different. You are not your body. The final destiny of the body is death. But death is not really final. It is only another transition, another move. Just as you changed from childhood to youth and then to old age, at the death you move on to go through the cycle of birth again. And the birth is in the form of another body.

What we do in this life sets us on our way to the next. Just as what we do in the school gets us ready for where we go when our schooling is over. In our next birth we can go up or we can go down, or we can get free from the cycle of birth and death altogether.

Lord Krishna showed the path that leads to the

destination of god. Humanity and the perfection of living was explained by the Lord. He said, “Surrender yourself unto Me. Do all actions for the sake of me. Cut off all attachments. Have perfect unswerving devotion to Me”.

Lord Krishna stressed the importance of Nishkamya Karma. His teachings were precious and important with “Bhakthi Pradhana”. The great importance on self-surrender was well observed by Arjuna, who felt it as the correct way to attain God Consciousness. He learned the theory that “God alone existed,” and thus realized the God everywhere and always and in every situation in life. By human birth, Lord Krishna came as his own brother-in-law. God delivered all the norms of justice and the right ways of living. All about misconduct, sin, unruly activity, and the importance of justice, one can not understand on the spot. But time would take its own course in punishing sin. It was the time for Arjuna to reclaim his rights in the name of justice. It was his duty to conduct the war against the Duriyodhana and put an end to their atrocities.

Lord Krishna after teaching all the just theories, from the fundamental base to the level of fulfilled destiny, lifted his conch, “Pancha Jannya”, and made it blow the sieren sound which echoed all over the Battlefield and thus the Maha Bharata War commenced.

Aachi’s Corner.Chettinad Vellai paniyaram

No Chettinad recipe pages will be complete without a note for its traditional delicacy “Vellai paniyaram”.

IngredientsRaw rice-1 cup (usually small fat rice little cheaper one is good)Urudh dhal -1/4 cup(usually in Chettinad we will take rice to the rim level of uzhakku or measuring cup and then fill urudh dhal to the heap level of the uzhakku. Soak both together for 1 hour

and grind it to a very smooth paste. Add the required amount of salt while grinding itself. Consistency of the batter can be little more watery than dosa batter. To make it watery use little milk.

ProcedureKeep a medium size little bit flat tawa in the stove .Pour 1 ½ cups of oil. Keep the flame in medium. Make sure that at no stage the oil gets overheated. When the oil is hot using a medium sized spoon (little bigger than a table spoon) pour one spoon batter into the oil, the paniyaram will immediately rise now with the help of the ladle used to take the paniyaram out, pour the heated oil in the tawa on the top of the paniyaram. This will help the paniyaram to get a flowery border. Within a minute turn it upside down and allow it to cook for 1 more minute and remove it from oil.

Allow the paniyaram to cool and now break the paniyaram and see that it is cooked inside also. If not, cook the next one little more. But the paniyaram should never be roasted.

Sometimes the paniyaram will rise like a ball, and then the problem will be either the oil is too hot or your batter is too thick. If you feel it is too thick pour little milk to make it watery.

Sometimes u may feel that the paniyaram drinks oil then the mistake is that u have added too much urudh dhal or your urudh dhal is very good in quality. In that case you can add little idly batter, or rice flour. Vellai paniyaram will be very tasty with thakkali thuvayal or milagai chutney.

KandarappamThis is a traditional Chettinad snack item which will have its place on almost all important festival or Pooja days. Being little bit sweet, it will be a real treat for sweet lovers

IngredientsRaw rice-1 cupPar boiled rice (idly rice)-1 cupUrudh dhal- 1/4 cupPeeled broken green dhal-1 table spoonThoor dhal-1 table spoonBengal gram-1 table spoonJaggery -1 ½ cupGrated coconut-(1/2 coconut)

Elachi (yelakkai) -6 nos

ProcedureSoak the rice and dhal for 1 hour. Put it in the grinder and grind for 10 minutes. Now add the grated coconut and grind to a smooth paste. Finally add the jaggery and the powdered elachi and grind till the jaggery nicely mixes. The batter should be in the consistency of dosa batter. Keep the kadai in the stove .Pour the required amount of oil. Once the oil gets heated, keep the flame in sim and using a small spatula, slowly pour 1 spatula of batter into the oil and wait for a second when the appam raises slowly pour the heated oil on top of the appam 2 or 3 times with the help of a spoon. This will enable the appam to be cooked fast and also to get a curled border (we usually call it as ‘karai katturathu’ in Tamil). Then turn the side, wait for a minute and remove from the kadai. It will not take much time to cook. So don’t wait till it turns brown.

MasalacheeyamIn Chettinad menu, Masalacheeyam will take the place of ulundu vadai in the evening tiffin or dinner. A very tasty and safe item, since it will not cause any problem even if the dough is little loose.

IngredientsRaw rice -1 cupPar boiled rice-1 Table spoonUrudh dhal -1 cup

Javvarisi-1 table spoon (pearl sago in English or sabudana in Telugu)

Soak all these for 1 hour and grind it to a smooth paste adding water little by little to the dough. The dough should neither be too thick like the vada dough nor become very watery. The consistency can be somewhat like the urudh batter we make for idly. Add the salt required also while grinding itself

Ingredients to be added in the doughSmall onions finely chopped-1/2 cupGreen chilies chopped-3 to 4Grated coconut-2 tablespoonsCurry leaf chopped-1 tablespoonMustard seed-1 teaspoonUrudh dhal-1 teaspoon

ProcedureKeep the kadai in the stove. Pour 1 tablespoon oil. When the oil gets heated, add the mustard seed, urudh dhal and curry leaf. When the mustard cracks add the onion and chilies stir for 2 to 3 minutes, and then add the grated coconut stir for 1 more minute. Add the entire thing into the dough and mix well. Now keep the kadai in the stove. Pour the oil required for frying the cheeyams ( 2 cups).when the oil gets heated make the dough into round balls simply with your hand and fry it. Don’t bother about exact round shape. It will become round when it falls into the oil. Keep the flame in medium. When the cheeyums turn golden brown, transfer the cheeyums into a plate spread with tissue paper. When the oil gets absorbed it is ready to be served. This will be more delicious if served with coconut chutney or mint chutney.

Chettinad Idiyappa VathalIngredients:-Raw rice – 2 litres, Green chilies – 25,Salt – To taste, Asafetida – 1 Teaspoon powderedLime – 4

Method:-Wash the rice well, dry it and grind the rice and green chilies

together. Sieve it in a fine sieve.

Put water in an idly container, cover with and idly plate, put a damp idly cloth over it. When the water boils, spread the flour on the cloth as much as it holds and steam it for 10 minutes. Remove and repeat for remaining flour.

Add the limejuice, asafetida and salt, mix well with little water and in the small Idiyappam press, fill the mix, and press it out into small round shapes on polythene sheets.

The problems in the relationship between father in law, mother in law and daughter in law and the spiritual solutions for the problems.

Up to the marriage a girl is only a daughter. After the marriage she becomes the daughter in law of a different family. Normally most of the families consider the daughter in law as the most important member of the family and show a great love and affection to her. But in few families the daughter in law will be tortured like anything by the in laws. The father and mother of the husband are called as the father in law and mother in law. According to the horoscope of the suffering girl the planets will be in the worst position. If the planets Sun, Moon and Venus are not in a good position it is definite that the girl will have lot of troubles from her mother in law and father in law. Among These Planets If the Planet Sun is in a good position surely that girl will have a great support from her father in law. If the planet Moon is in a good position, the girl will get the wonderful help from the mother in law but she will have more disturbances from her father in law. If the planet Venus is in a good position in the horoscope of the suffering girl, she will get the greatest help from her husband but the troubles from the father in law and mother in law will be more. What is the best way to solve all these kinds of problems? Atharva Veda has explained about a lot of Yaksha/Yakshini devathas to solve this worst problem. For solving some problems Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar prescribes only the devathas rituals. For

clearing some problems he prescribes devathas rituals along with Yaksha/Yakshini devathas rituals. For clearing certain problems Swamiji Sri.Selvam Siddhar prescribes only Yaksha/Yakshini devathas rituals. What is devatha? What is Yaksha devathas and what is Yakshini devathas? Devathas are Gods.

Yaksha is the masculine gender for demi- gods and the Yakshini is the feminine gender of demi goddesses. For correcting the problem of relationship between the father in law, mother in law and daughter in law Atharva Veda describes both Yaksha and Yakshini devathas rituals. There are eighteen devathas in total. Out of this eighteen eleven are male demi gods and seven are female demi goddesses. The eleven Yaksha devathas are called as “Ekadasa Maha Yakshas”. According to Atharva Veda they have got very fearsome poses. The first is Neelakanta Yaksha. He has a blue throat. He controls the voice of the father in law and mother in law. The next is Visalaksha Yaksha. He makes the bad vision of the father in law and mother in law as the best one. The third is Marthanda Yaksha. He graces the daughter in law with a great mental strength. The fourth is Swachandha Yaksha. He graces the daughter in law with a smiling face. The fifth is Athisanthushta Yaksha. He makes the father in law and mother in law to fell satisfied with the daughter in law.

The sixth is Kechara Yaksha. He removes the evil ideas from the minds of father in law and mother in law. The seventh is Samhara Yaksha. He kills the evilness of the planets. The eighth is Viswaroopa Yaksha. He develops the good image of the daughter in law in minds father in law and mother in law. The ninth is Manovega Yaksha. He speeds up the minds of the father in law and mother in law to be soft and sweet to the daughter in law. The tenth is Kreetana Yaksha. He makes the daughter in law as the important personality of the family. The eleventh one is Mohana Yaksha.

He creates a great love and affection in the minds of father in law and mother in law towards the daughter in law. The Atharva Veda tells that these mantras should be learnt only from a Guru maharaj. The rituals performed as per the directions of a Guru Maharaj along with the help of learned Vedic scholars give the entire benefit of the rituals. The devathas and Yaksha/Yakshini devathas solve the problems and bless the devotee with a long and happy living.
