From the President

By Sue Raymond NGC UMW President “Doing a New Thing” seems to be not only the theme for the North Georgia Conference United Methodist Women in 2013, but also for

me personally! It seems like every time I turn around I’m facing something new and being drawn outside my comfort zone! I have found myself on the Board of Directors of Murphy Harpst Children’s Center and have attended my first Board meeting. I see how much I have to learn about this fabulous National Mission Institution and the meaningful work that it does. UMW has supported Murphy Harpst since it was founded, but there are still new ways in which we can expand our outreach to this vital mission institution! I had to miss the wonderfully planned Social Action Event, because I was attending “Voices: A Transformative Leader-ship Event” at Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville with Marian Kim, our Korean Language Coordinator. What a blessing to sit at the tables with ladies whose first language is Korean, or Spanish or Tongan! We worshiped and sang and danced and listened to Harriett Jane Olson inspire us to reach out to others and be willing to try something new. I have

enough trouble singing in English, but what a fabulous experience to hear so many voices singing and praying in a variety of languages! As I write this I am preparing to attend the Confer-ence UMM Executive Meeting (talk about doing a new thing!) We will be discussing partnering in an UM-COR mission project at Annual Conference in June. There are so many blessings available through our con-nectional system! I want to hear what you and your units are doing that’s new and inviting. I hope that you will send arti-cles to your district Communications Coordinator and to Ann Orr, the Conference Communications Coordina-tor about what’s happening in your local unit. We can all learn and expand our concepts of mission when we are inspired by what’s happening in other units. Let’s work together to keep our PURPOSE new and vital as we reach out to women, children and youth in the name of God. Blessings -- Sue [email protected] 770-972-3399

justice emphases: Where the Money Goes, Shaping the Future, Creating Cross-Cultural Relationship, Resources for Expanding Concepts of Mission, Dea-coness & Home Missioners and Membership Matters. The opening worship included -Summary of Where We Are from Harriett Olson. My take away from Harriett’s remarks is that we are in a season of change, which the NGC UMW is embracing with “doing a new thing”. We must observe and watch to see who is in our group and prepare to meet the different levels of all that are in-volved. We do this by taking one step at a time and mak-ing adjustments when needed. We do not give up but keep going as we look at the world around us and what we need to do. As we prepare for the 2013 NGC UMW LDD, I am ask-ing two questions of you. In the above list of workshop and pop-in topics, is there one that peaks your interest? If so, which one? Are you a local unit president or local unit leader that would like to attend LDD on November 2, Buford First UMC (GNVS)? Please send your response to: [email protected].

On January11-13, 2013, ten members of the North Georgia Executive Team travelled to Lake Junaluska, NC to attend the United Methodist Women’s Leadership De-velopment Days (LDD) sponsored by the UMW national or-ganization. This was a new thing, a part of the restructured UMW. In the past, newly elected officers attended a training session in St Louis in the fall of the year of being elected. The agenda for the training did not emphasize training for each elected position but focused on preparing women to be leaders in UMW. Sessions were planned for Conference Presidents, Treasurers, Committee on Nominations, Secretar-ies, District Presidents and Song Leaders. Other participants had the opportunity to select from thirteen different work-shops and seven pop-in sessions topics that appeal to their interest and need. Among the workshop selections: Conflict Management, How to be Involved in Social Justice, Men-toring, Organizing for Growth, Program Planing ,Models for Effective Leadership Teams and Using Online Tool for Leadership (did not list all). Pop-in topics included 4 social

Parliamentarian

I look forward to working with you as Par-liamentarian this year. I am excited about my appointed position and look forward to sharing information related to Parliamentarian responsibilities. The Conference and District Mission Team should read their Standing Rules in the first Executive Meeting of each year to familiarize the Team of the rules. District Parliamentarians or Dis-trict Presidents please contact me if you do not have Standing Rules or have not mailed them to me. I am anxious to read the new United Methodist Women Handbook for 2013-2016. The Handbook pro-vides you with guidelines and policies and equips each group to organize in a way that makes the most sense to them. You will learn about the work of United Methodist Women and how you can engage in mission, connect with one another and find practical tips and suggestions for the organization and resources to help assume your responsibility.

You can download the e-handbook on line (www.umwmission.org) without the By-Laws in-cluded. The complete handbook should be available by May or June. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions ([email protected]). Thanks for all you do! In His Service,

There is still time for you to participate in the Reading Program. All you need to do is choose one of the four Read-ing Plans and then select books from each category: Educa-tion for Mission, Leadership Development, Nurturing for Community, Social Action, and Spiritual Growth and start reading! The Reading Program provides an excellent oppor-tunity to broaden our understanding of mission, increase our knowledge of social issues and deepen our spiritual lives. Books may be selected from the 2009-2013 reading lists. Some of the newer selections are: Everyday Justice which will reveal how small lifestyle changes can have big impli-cations for justice around the world. By Patricia Bell NGC UMW Spiritual Growth “Doing a New Thing” and informing you before it happens is what the North

Georgia UMW is about this year. May 3-4, 2013 we will gather at The Lodge at Simpsonwood for a time of fellowship, Bible study, renewal, reflections, and fun. Come prepared to grow in God’s word as you seek to retell a biblical story or create your own spiritual testi-mony. You might even gain a new hobby and help the environment by crocheting plastic bags. We will also complete UMCOR Kits—visit our website for more information. Our Spiritual Growth Experience speaker will be Bishop Violet L. Fisher. Bishop Fisher received two Master's Degrees, one in Education and the other in Divinity, as well as a Doctorate in Divinity. She be-came the first African American woman to be elected to the episcopacy from the Northeastern Jurisdiction. She was called to be an evangelist and began preaching at the age of 16. Bishop Fisher served as Hope for the

Inspired Growth

Children of Africa Committee and as Vice President of the General Board of Global Ministries. She also served on the General Board of Church and Society. She was the featured speaker at Southeastern Jurisdiction Quadrennial Meeting in Birmingham, Alabama in June 2012 and challenged us to “Add Another Leaf at the Table.” She is a “spitfire” of a lady. She tells it like it is while moti-vating you to move in the ministry for the Lord. She is who we will hear to help inspire us to continue the work of United Methodist Women—helping women, children, and youth. Your part is to register yourself and invite someone who is “un-churched” as well as potential leaders to attend this event to help us share God’s word and promote UMW. Visit us on www.ngumw.org for more information. I look forward to seeing you this Spring—a new season for growth.

By Jackie Evans NGC UMW Secretary The year “2013” has soared to higher heights for the United Methodist

Women in 3 months. January 19th, The Executive Commit-tee met at Stockbridge UMC and on February 2, the treasurers, Education and Interpretation coordinators, Historians and Membership Nurture and Outreach Coordinators met at Ousley UMC. The purpose of these meetings was to plan and formulate ideas for the coming events. March is a month of reverence. Let us celebrate Holy Week, the death and res-urrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. On March 2nd the Social Action Event was held at Trinity UMC. The present-ers enlighten the audience about Elder Abuse, Women in Prison, and the ses-sion on Environment. These sessions were very informative and uplifting.

From the Secretaries Desk

There are many other events, conference and district planned for the months ahead. Encourage as many young people to attend as possible. The 20-30-40- Something Event is a good starting point. Surely, in “2013” the United Methodist Women will be “Doing a New Thing”. “See the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being, I will announce them to you.” Isaiah 42:9 Many thanks to the United Methodist Women, not only in our conference but in other conferences, who are dedicated to serving women, children and youth with their work in mission.

Be blessed!

District Historians Make Plans for “Doing a New Thing”

The District Historians for our North Georgia Confer-ence UMW met at Ousley UMC, February 2nd to dis-cuss their plans for 2013. It was a wonderful time of getting to know each other and sharing ideas and goals for the future. It was agreed by all that United Method-ist Women have a rich heritage and it is our responsi-bility as appointed historians to see that our unit, dis-trict and conference events are recorded for generations to come. The historians have three projects planned for the year, the first one is at the Spiritual Growth Retreat at Simpsonwood, May 3rd and 4th, the second at our UMW Annual Breakfast at Annual Conference in Ath-ens in June and the third at our NGC-UMW Annual Meeting at Douglasville FUMC on October 5th. In order for these projects to be as planned we need the assistance of all our unit historians and where a unit does not have a historian then with the help from an officer or volunteer in the unit. We need recommenda-

tions for UMW (living or deceased) in your districts who you consider outstanding or who have made history by their ser-vice to UMW and our church. Your district historian will be contacting local units for cooperation in these projects. Please help us record our history by taking pictures, keeping notes on attendance, speakers and ideas from your unit activities. These will be highlighted in different forms to share with your sister UMW. We need your help; so please be responsive when your district historian contacts you. If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.

Mildred Foster who was born Dec 30, 1926 has attended Bethlehem Senior Center for over 14 years. Mrs. Foster was born and raised just around the corner from the center and attended the Lena Campbell Elementary School. She currently lives within two miles of Bethlehem in the house she and her husband shared before his untimely death last November. She and Clifford were married for 65 years. After the passing of her husband she returned to Bethlehem as quickly as she could to the comfort and compassion of her longtime friends. Other than the 18 years she spent living in Chicago, she has always lived in this area of Atlanta. When their son was young Mrs. Foster spent the time as a day care teacher and enjoyed reading to the children who attended. She attends the center as often as she can. She told me she used to come 5 days a week, but now can only come a few days a week since she has so many doctor appointments. She was quick to tell me that she likes to travel with the seniors on the local field trips as well as the “big vacation” trip the seniors take every year to Myrtle Beach or Florida. The reason she comes to Bethlehem is to fellowship with other Christians. “It’s just like visiting family every day” says Mrs. Foster. “Sometimes we don’t always get along, but that’s OK because we still love each other.” Mrs. Foster walks slower than usual and with a cane these days. She says she is afraid of falling but in her mind she is still dancing up a storm to the hits of BB King and Count Basie. “Each new day is a blessing” states Mrs. Foster, “and if I can come to Bethlehem, the blessing is even bigger!” By Cande Taylor Executive Director, Wesley Community Centers, Inc. A National Mission Institution of UMW If you would like to support a senior and enable them to participate in the ministries of Bethlehem Senior Center, be part of our “Senior-ship” program. For $25 per month you can make it possible for a senior to attend BSC 5 days a week and be enriched by the programs which take place there each day.

multiple info sources Contact Janie Walker at 404-870-3788 or [email protected] October of 2013 our church can celebrate 125 years of consecrat-ing and licensing deaconesses. Their work is a living model of the love Jesus had for all persons. They give their lives to ministries of love, service, and justice often with small compensation. Some trace the deaconess movement back to Phoebe who served during Paul’s ministry. Another tie was when a woman was released from prison in the 1830’s and trained by a Lutheran pastor to serve the sick and the poor. She was the first Lutheran deaconess. Because of her service many women in other denominations dedicated their lives to Christian service. In October 1888 three deaconesses were consecrated and licensed in the Northern Illinois Conference. Thus this coming October marks the 125 years of Methodist deacons. Dignity, respect and self suffi-ciency are emphasized in deaconess work. Women’s role in ministry has not always been easy or available. The office of deaconesses was opened to married women in 1959. Today we have 157 deaconesses in the UMC. Most are focused in the USA, but some of their ministries have international ties. All information on deaconesses comes from the 2013 Response article by Myka Kennedy Stephens. Her article is also shared on the national UMW website. If you are interested in programs on elder abuse or environmental-ism, then please contact Rev. Marshall Bryan, [email protected] for abuse information and Jake Miles Joseph for the environment at [email protected] Rev. Bryan lives in Rome and is an Adult Protective Services Case Manager in the NW region of Georgia. Jake Joseph hails from Colorado and presently is an intern at Grace UMC while attending Divinity School at Emory.
