"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong."

(1 Corinthians 16:13) Discipline, besides its negative connotation, is also defined by Webster as "an orderly or prescribed conduct or pattern of behavior; self control." It is a very desirable quality in anyone's life. Spiritual disciplines are even more desirable because they help Christians connect with God so that He can change us from the inside out. They are habits that we develop through consistency over time. In his book, Celebration of Discipline, Richard Foster writes, �We must not be led to believe the Disciplines are only for spiritual giants and hence beyond our reach�God intends the Disciplines of the spiritual life to be for ordinary human beings.� Foster divides these disciplines into three areas: Inner Disciplines: The inner disciplines include meditation, prayer, fasting and the study of God�s Word. They require us to make time each day to spend with God. The psalms talk about our time with God renewing our soul, our innermost part. �How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you� (Psalm 119:9-11). Outer Disciplines: The outer disciplines include simplicity, solitude, submission and service. They require us to take time to remember what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. �If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me� (Mark 8:34). Corporate Disciplines: These disciplines include confession, worship, guidance and celebration. They remind us the Christian life is lived in community and we need others in order to grow in our relationship with God. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another�and all the more as you see the Day approaching� (Hebrews 10:24-25). Disciplina, además de su significado negativo, se define como "un plan definido y organizado o comportamiento distinto; autocontrol." Es una calidad muy deseable en la vida de cualquier. La disciplina espiritual es mas deseable porque ayuda al creyente a enchufarse con Dios, para que el pueda actuar con Su poder de adentro hacia afuera. En su libro, Celebramos la Disciplina, Richard Foster escribe: �No debemos pensar que la disciplina espiritual es solo para gigantes de la fe y por lo tanto se haya fuera de nuestro alcance... Dios quiere que la disciplina espiritual sea parte de nuestra vida. Foster divide el área de la disciplina en tres partes: la de adentro, la de afuera y la comunal. La de adentro: La disciplina de adentro son todas aquellas que tienen que ver con la meditación, la oración, el ayuno y el estudio de la Palabra de Dios. Todas ellas requieren de que día a día pasamos tiempo en ellas, por lo tanto con Dios: �¿Con qué limpiará el joven su camino? Con guardar tu palabra. Con todo mi corazón te he buscado; no me dejes desviarme de tus mandamientos.�(Salmo 119:9-11) La de afuera: La disciplina de afuera es aquella que conlleva una vida simple, soledad, sumisión y servicio. Requieren de tiempo para poder comprender lo que significa ser un seguidor de Cristo. �Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, y tome su cruz, y sígame.� (Marcos 8:34) Comunal: Esta disciplina es todo lo que tiene que ver con la confesión, alabanza, guía y celebración. Nos recuerdan que la vida cristiana se vive en comunidad y necesitamos de otros para crecer en nuestra relación con el Señor. Y considerémonos unos a otros para estimularnos al amor y a las buenas obras, no dejando de congregarnos, como algunos tienen por costumbre, sino exhortándonos; y tanto más, cuanto veis que aquel día se acerca.
