The Great Story unfolds... The churches of North East England make our region very special. Each one has a unique past and present, but together they tell an amazing story, to inspire you whether you follow a faith or not.
It’s the story of the Christian faith in North East England, which created such world-renowned architecture as Durham Cathedral, Hexham Abbey and St Paul’s Church in Jarrow. Starting with the “Golden Age of Northumbria” in the 7th century, the story records human achievement and struggles down the centuries. Fabulous craftsmanship and industrial innovation are also celebrated and remembered in regional churches large and small.
So read on to discover why the North East is quite simply one of the best places to trace the development of Christian heritage in this country. Explore how our local stories have contributed to national and international life. And along the way you will also find that our churches are not simply about the past, but continue to make a real contribution to local and national life.
From majestic cathedrals to smaller churches and chapels, today’s churches serve their communities and visitors in many different ways. Some offer a café, bookshop or guided tours; others offer the simplest of experiences. Some stand amidst stunning natural beauty; others are found on busy city streets. In some churches you can explore by yourself; in others you will meet volunteers to help you. And if you’re looking for peace and tranquillity, all the places in this guide will provide an oasis of calm and an opportunity to become once again a human be-ing instead of a human do-ing.
We look forward to sharing our story with you!
Using This Guide You can search for churches by area (see maps) or in the index (page 30). Postcodes are included to help identify exact locations.
We want you to enjoy our churches safely. Please be aware that there may be uneven steps, stone floors and dimly lit interiors.
As churches are living places of worship for their local communities, opening times may occasionally be affected by special events. Times when churches are open for worship and church or community activities are generally not listed, although you will be made welcome to any of these.
Church descriptions are brief, but fuller descriptions, articles and details of other churches worth exploring will be found on our website. www.spiritinstone.info
There is no charge for this guide and the churches are free to enter. However a donation towards their upkeep will always be greatly appreciated.

The Lindisfarne Gospels
One of the world’s greatest books, the Lindisfarne Gospels has a
unique place in the culture and Christian heritage of England. The cultural masterpiece was produced around the late 7th/early 8th century by monks of Lindisfarne Priory in honour of St Cuthbert (634-687AD). It contains the Gospels of the four Evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, recording the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, therefore representing the core of Christian belief.
The Lindisfarne Gospels is normally kept in the care of the British Library in London. High quality facsimile copies can be viewed at Lindisfarne Heritage Centre, Woodhorn Museum in Northumberland, and at St Mary & St Cuthbert’s parish church, Chester-le-Street.

Art in Churches
Discover the wealth of art in churches! Stained glass is a delightful art form with
a very long history. St Peter’s monastery at Monkwearmouth contains the first stained glass in England, produced in the 7th century, by glaziers from Gaul. It’s also a modern art form: Durham Cathedral’s Transfiguration Window and Hexham Abbey’s Tyrrell Window are wonderful 21st century examples, and many more are found in churches around the region.
Other artistic gems include everything from medieval stone carvings of the Magi at Kirknewton to Arts & Crafts splendour at St Andrew’s Roker, St Chad’s Bensham and St George’s, Newcastle. There’s modern sculpture too, including Fenwick Lawson’s The
Journey at Holy Island and Christ Ascending at Houghton-le-Spring. Look out for art exhibitions hosted by churches such as St Edmund’s in Gateshead, and St Augustine’s in Alston.

Whatever your interest - magnificent buildings, fascinating churchyards,
famous personalities, stunning artistry and craftsmanship – you are sure to find it satisfied by this collection of fine churches and Christian heritage sites.
“There is nowhere in England more steeped in Christian prayer or more packed with Christian Saints than the North East. From the awesome Durham Cathedral to the wild retreat of Lindisfarne, the deep spirituality of the area has been given expression in stone throughout the centuries, and the modern pilgrim with eyes to see and an open heart cannot but be moved by it all. ‘Spirit in Stone’ will help you to make the most of it too, but as you marvel at the stonework look deeper to see the Spirit behind it.”
The Rt Rev and Rt Hon Justin Welby
Archbishop of Canterbury
(and former Bishop of Durham)
