Go up to anyone who grew up in the Jewishfaith and ask, "What's the Shema?" I'm willing tobet some hard-earned cash that he'll open his lipsand say, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, theLord is one."

The Shema is a centerpiece of the Jewish faith and, therefore, by way of extension, our own Christian faith. It's themost fundamental prayer of Judaism. It's often the first piece ofScripture that a Jewish child learns. (Can't you just imagine Jesuslearning these words at the knee of Mary or Joseph?) To this day, many Jews recite the Shema twice per day-once in the morning andonce at night. Covering their eyes, they say the words carefully todemonstrate reverence and respect. Asking a Jewish person aboutthe Shema is like asking a Roman Catholic, "What's 'The HailMary'?" It's bedrock theological teaching.

The Shema opens with these famous words: "Hear, O Israel:The Lord our God, the Lord is one." I love those words! They areDeuteronomy 6:4, which calls God's people to snap to attention. The next verse probably sounds familiar to you: "Love the Lord

your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with allyour might." Christ would one day quote this verse as a part of theGreatest Commandment. But while I love Deuteronomy 6:4-5, I'mequally as passionate about what follows. Moses, speaking to thepeople of Israel, says:

"And these words that I command you today shallbe on your heart. You shall teach them diligently toyour children, and shall talk of them when you sit inyour house, and when you walk by the way, andwhen you lie down, and when you rise" (6:6-8).

The Shema calls upon parents to pass their faith on to the nextgeneration. That, to me, is just as important as all of its the other

parts. Faith in God-not silver or gold-is the greatest inheritance thchildren can receive. The Bible, in fact, is replete with injunctioto this effect. "Tell the coming generation the glorious deeds of tLord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done" (Psa78:4). "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when heold, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). "Fathers, do nprovoke your children to anger, but raise them up in the discipliand instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4).

Transmitting the faith from one generation to the next issacred responsibility. If ever there were a church that takes thseriously, it's Woodmont Christian Church. Since I begworking in Children's and Family Ministry, I've been enormousimpressed by the many folks who make good on God's command

Who are these folks? They're our loving workers in the nurseThey're our dedicated teachers in Sunday school. They're otalented musicians for the children's choirs. They're oyouthful interns for Junior Youth Fellowship. They're toutstanding faculty and staff of Woodmont Christian PreschoThey're pastors, parents, volunteers, and more. They're

who support this ministry behind-the-scenes, like the selfleadministrators and custodians. Truly, there are too many folks name, yet they all deserve our deepest thanks. So, over the nefew months, I'd like to make my best attempt at doing so. Eamonth, I'll feature a different group of folks who make oChildren's Ministry so special and ask you to join me expressing our gratitude.

"Hear, O Woodmont, the Lord our God, the Lord is one!"

Hear, O Woodmont...Rev. Justin Gung,Minister of Children & Congregational Care

For the last few days I have been thinking aboutthe 13 men I had the honor of meeting on Fridaynight when my small group served as hosts ofRoom in the Inn. The three folks I sat with were

no strangers to pain, isolation, hardship, loss. And while manywore their hardship like physical weights on their backs, they werenot full of complaint, only gratitude for the meal, the conversation, the possibility of a shower and a good night's sleep.

This time of the year, for many of us, can be hard. Even those of uswho do not worry about where our next meal will come from orwhether or not we will find adequate shelter at nightfall, we are nostrangers to pain, isolation, hardship, loss. Enjoy this wintertimeprayer by Dana Gioia, who reminds us that even in hardship, wecan find God's abundant blessings.

Prayer at Winter SolsticeBlessed is the road that keeps us homeless.Blessed is the mountain that blocks our way.

Blessed are hunger and thirst, loneliness and all forms of desire.Blessed is the labor that exhausts us without end.Blessed are the night and the darkness that blinds us.Blessed is the cold that teaches us to feel.Blessed are the cat, the child, the cricket, and the crow.Blessed is the hawk devouring the hare.Blessed are the saint and the sinner who redeem each other.

Blessed are the dead, calm in their perfection.Blessed is the pain that humbles us.Blessed is the distance that bars our joy.Blessed is this shortest day that makes us long for light.Blessed is the love that in losing we discover.

Around the time of theFrench Revolution, artistsbegan revolting againstthe patronage system, thecreating of their art for the

aristocracy and the church, and centeredmore on self-expression. This resulted in

literature and music of inward declaration-more personal and filled with emotion.(Edgar Allan Poe was part of the Americanchapter of this movement). It also gavebirth to an art that was abstract, no longerenslaved to function. Beethoven's music isa prime example.

During this time, an interesting thinghappened. The inner lines of the musicbecame more prominent than the outerlines. From the early period, Schubert andSchumann paid attention to what washappening in the center of their music, andin the late period, Brahms continued to pull

much emotion from the inner voices of hisscores.

This sort of revolution sometimes occursin Christians. The closer we get to God,the more our inner lives seem to takeprecedence. The less we think about selfand our own needs, the more our inner life

feeds upon helping others. The more wgive into spiritual insight (notice thword), the more our emotions center ocompassion and outreach for the needy mind, body and spirit.

May the mind of Christ be ever in us.

Rather, it should be that of your inner sethe unfading beauty of a gentle and quispirit, which is of great worth in Godsight. I Peter 3:4
