I hope you enjoyed the Fourth of July weekend. What’s better than spending time with family and friends, with barbecue ribs in the smoker or burgers sizzling on the grill, and a side of the season’s first sweet corn? Driving our Porsches! If you haven’t had enough opportunities to get behind the wheel this season stay tuned for some great new options.

A big thank you to Sherif and Angela Tewfik for hosting a wonderful family picnic at their homestead on June 25th. Twenty-five beautiful cars were lined up on the lawn, which made it easy to admire five decades of Porsche beauty between bites of a delicious lunch from Big Al’s BBQ and cheesecake by Chibby’s Cake Out. The Tewfiks are always gracious hosts and we greatly appreciate their hospitality.

Schonesland has grown significantly the past few years, and our roster now includes nearly 140 primary members and 80 affiliate members. Over half of our members have joined since 2012 and we’re seeing great participation at events. To ensure we stay well organized we’ve begun asking members to register for events on the MotorsportsReg.com website. It’s easy to set up an account, as Will MacFarland describes in this issue. You’ll also enjoy reading Will’s racing themed article and recap of his trip to the iconic Indy 500.

This Saturday July 9th at 8:00 we’ll meet for Cars and Coffee at the Cozy Café in Johnston. At 9:00 trail boss Garry Seemann will lead us on a new day drive to the Amana Colonies, with scenic stops along the way and lunch at the Ox Yoke Inn. For more info check out the Schonesland website and be sure to register soon on MotorsportsReg.com. If you have questions please email Garry at [email protected].

Garry is also planning a weekend trip to Nauvoo, Illinois on August 6th and 7th. Have you visited the historic American Gothic House? It will be one of the spots we’ll see along the route. The trip will include lots of driving, good food, and a choice of comfortable places to stay and you’ll find complete details on Schonesland.com. Register on MotorsportsReg.com

and make your hotel reservation today – the special discounted room rates will soon change back to regular prices.

July heat and humidity have you wishing for cooler temps? You’ll look forward to some Fall fun after reading about the new October trip to Wisconsin Ron Newman and his wife, Alice, are planning.

We’re fortunate to have many volunteers who organize events for Schonesland and contribute to our monthly newsletter. I’m proud to let you know that Schonesland has been recognized by PCA with the Best Small Region Newsletter award. Congratulations to editor David Safris and the many other Schonesland members who provide articles and photos for SPINNER each month.

Make time to savor your independence and enjoy your car today – see you on the road!

For fans of motorsport, there is no better time of year than the beginning of summer. As the days grow longer, the three best races of the year come with barely a breath separating them. And this year, all three have been absolutely stirring events.

First to arrive on the calendar is the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix. In 2016, the dominant team in Formula 1 remains Mercedes AMG, but Merc was stunned in qualifying by Red Bull’s lead driver, Daniel Ricciardo. Ricciardo laid down a staggering qualifying time of 1:13.622, nearly two tenths faster than Merc’s Nico Rosberg and more than three tenths faster than defending world champion Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton. Because passing at Monaco is so difficult, qualifying results are massively important. And indeed, on Sunday, Ricciardo looked to have the race firmly in hand. When he got the word to enter pit lane for a change of tires, he had a significant lead over Hamilton, who was lurking well back in second place.

And then, instead of stopping for the usual three seconds or less in his pit box, Ricciardo was forced to wait there for FOURTEEN seconds, because astonishingly and unfathomably, the Red Bull team did not have his new tires at the ready. Hamilton overtook Ricciardo just past pit exit, ascending to the lead and never relinquishing it. Ricciardo was forced to swallow a second-place finish. When the team contacted his radio to congratulate him, he replied, “Save it.” Drama at Monaco!

WILD START

Will MacFarlandVice President

Back in the United States, the Sunday before Memorial Day means one thing—the Indianapolis 500. In 2016, we were not treated to just any 500…this year was the 100th running. The drivers were chomping at the bit—everyone wanted to be the one atop the podium for this bit of history. And this race, which in the past could tend toward domination by a car or two that were much faster than the rest, now features a staggering number of lead changes, as many of the cars and drivers are nearly evenly matched, and the aerodynamic characteristics of the DW-12 chassis make it difficult to remain in the lead for very long.

As the race began, it was a pure shootout between two high-profile drivers: Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe. Hunter-Reay took the victory in heartstopping fashion in 2014, holding off three-time winner Helio Castroneves in the second-closest finish ever. Hinchcliffe, the jovial Canadian, was nearly killed in a 500 practice accident in 2015, so the 2016 race marked his triumphant return to the 2.5-mile oval. For 24 flat-out laps, the two men traded the first position, back and forth. Others then began to enter the picture: Carlos Munoz, a talented young driver for Andretti Autosport, got his first taste of the lead on lap 30. Townsend Bell, a weathered racing veteran, left his usual spot in the NBC broadcast booth for a cockpit and a steering wheel. After the first pit stop his car found its groove, vaulting him toward the front. Other drivers got turns in the lead as the race pressed on: three-time winner Helio Castroneves, 2013 winner and crowd favorite Tony Kanaan, respected former pole-winning journeyman Alex Tagliani.

And then, on lap 129, a new name: Alexander Rossi. Actually, that name wasn’t new at all to devoted motorsports fans. Alexander Rossi and Conor Daly had been billed as the next great American hopes for Formula One in Road & Track as far back as 2013. Rossi had actually managed a foot in the door in F1, running five races for backmarking team Manor Marussia in 2015. While Formula One seemed to stiff-arm both Americans with a glass ceiling, IndyCar welcomed them, and both were on track at Indianapolis that Sunday.

Rossi led laps 129 through 137. On lap 138, Helio Castroneves overtook him, and for many of the 350,000 spectators, Rossi’s name faded from their conscious thoughts as quickly as it had entered. But then, as the race began to wind down, two things happened. One was very predictable, and one not. Predictable? Takuma Sato crashed (on lap 163). Not so predictable—there were no other caution periods after that one; the race was green from lap 166 to the finish. Remember how Hinchcliffe and Hunter-Reay pitted after 24 laps in the beginning? That was for fuel, because Indycars going flat out can only manage about that many laps. During the Sato caution, the top-running drivers and teams decided to push as fast as they could, hoping

Page 6: SPINNER - Schonesland · two high-profile drivers: Ryan Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe. Hunter-Reay took the victory in heartstopping fashion in 2014, holding off three-time winner

Page 6

for another yellow-flag session to duck into the pits and refuel before the finish. As the field blew through lap 190 with no caution in sight, the leaderboard became a confused jumble—one by one, the drivers up front were all forced to pit for fuel under green-flag conditions. The radio announcers doing the track broadcast struggled to put together a narrative: Who had pitted most recently? How recently was recently enough? How many laps could one of these cars go under race conditions before sputtering out?

Alexander Rossi had the answer: thirty-six laps. I remember standing on my seat on the outside of the front stretch at Indy as he cruised down the main straight toward the white flag, moving astoundingly slowly compared to everyone else as he desperately tried to preserve his final drops of ethanol. He turned lap 200 at an average speed of less than 180 miles per hour. Don’t mistake his economical victory for a blind-squirrel-finds-nut occasion, either…the fastest lap of the race averaged 225.228 miles per hour, and was set by none other than Alexander Rossi. An American rookie had the speed AND the smarts, and won the 500—first time that’s happened since 1928. Drama at Indianapolis!

While those two events were, without doubt, stunning, it was the third that moved me to write this article about just how beyond-belief dramatic motorsport can be. As it always is, the 24 Hours of Le Mans was a slugfest in 2016—a matter of surviving the nearly-9-mile track, the night, the weather, and the four-class, sixty-car field. There were three teams with LMP1-class hybrid prototypes this year, each fielding two cars: Toyota, Porsche, and Audi. Audi had a rough go of things and was truly not very competitive (unfortunate, because their R18 was a strikingly different, yet strangely beautiful design). The Porsche 919s had the outright pace. The Toyota TS050s were nearly as fast but could stretch one more lap out of their fuel tanks before needing to pit.

As the morning sun rose on the United States, the race was coming to a close in France, and it seemed largely decided: a lone Toyota ran in the lead. A strident Porsche gave chase from nearly a minute back. In third place was another Toyota, three laps in arrears.

And then the lead Toyota began to slow.

With merely three minutes remaining in the world’s greatest 24-hour race, the leading #5 Toyota coasted to a stop on the start-finish straight near the pit wall, unable to go any further. All of the denizens of the Toyota garage just stared, as if in a nightmare, unable to move. No one could blame them—such a thing was quite literally unbelievable. In the Porsche garage, victorious pandemonium broke out, but remained tempered by a feeling of empathetic sorrow for their competitors. A truly staggering result; drama, indeed, at Le Mans.

This article is too small for detailing the many other worthy details of these races: how Ford returned to Le Mans 50 years after their last victory, bringing with them a fleet of gorgeous new Ford GTs and posting a class win, how Charlie Kimball also turned 36 laps at the end to finish fifth at Indy, how Sergio Perez put on a strong performance at Monaco to get underdog team Force India onto the podium in third. It seems we live in the richest of times, when cars are brilliant and fast and reliable, when racing is competitive and thrilling and yet somehow still reasonably safe, and when a racetrack, just for an afternoon, can become America’s 55th-largest city. Cheers to you, motorsport.

Your left hand on the key – the engine comes alive. Look around……stunning group of cars. Fast. Sleek. Man, I love the sound of the engines. I love the smell too. You look to the side at another driver. A nod. A small, knowing smile………..this is going to be good.

Starting slowly, all in a line. Now we reach the open road. Shift – turn – shift, no brakes needed. Stretching out a bit. I can see all the cars in front of me rounding another sharp curve…….

The Schonesland Fall Tour is an escape……our escape, to a world we wish we lived in more often.

Are you up for:- interesting cars and conversation?- scenic, engaging roads? - wonderful new restaurants?- perhaps a craft market on the town square?

The 2016 version of the Fall Tour could be just what the “Porsche doctor ordered”. Our completely revamped Fall Tour takes a new approach; combining fun driving with a more leisurely, social emphasis.

The Fall Tour begins with a group dinner at the Pepper Sprout restaurant in downtown Dubuque, IA at 8:00 pm Friday, Oct. 7th. Our Schonesland group will be spending 2 nights (Friday & Saturday) at the downtown Dubuque Holiday Inn. The hotel has been remodeled and is ideally located for our event. A block of 15 rooms has been arranged for both nights.

Saturday our group will tour southern Wisconsin, enjoy lunch in what was once a “buggy factory”, tour some more, stop for some socializing and return to our Dubuque hotel. From our hotel it is a short walk to Vinny Vanucchi’s for appetizers and a terrific meal Saturday evening.

Sunday we will tour roads in NE Iowa before ending our tour late Sunday morning.

So mark your calendar for Oct. 7th – 9th. The 2016 Schonesland Fall Tour may be just the experience you’ve been looking for.

Improving on Success - An introduction to motorsportreg.comWill MacFarlandVice President

I haven’t been a citizen of this lovely state or a member of this esteemed organization for very long, but it is easy to see that Schonesland Region of the PCA is on the upswing. Schonesland is still considered “small” by PCA’s national standards, but we have reached the point (seventy-two new members since 2012, more than doubling the club size since then!) when we might have fifty or sixty members, spouses, and friends show up at any given event, and thus logistics have become a little thornier than when club get-togethers featured just a dozen or so diehards.

The Schonesland success story, combined with the ever-connected nature of today’s world, has led the club board to decide that we must turn to the internet to ensure the best possible planning and execution for our events. Fortunately, as we are in the macro sense still a young, fairly small organization, we’re not the first ones on this trail—it has long since been blazed for us.

Our web medium of choice is MotorsportReg.com, which has also served faithfully as the longtime organizational home of the Sports Car Club of America. As the website boasts, it is “trusted by 1,000+ clubs, race tracks, and sanctioning bodies.” I first encountered it when I was campaigning with the Audi Club of Southern California back in the late 2000’s. It is clean, simple, and does only what it’s asked to do: ease registration, reporting, and accounting for all types of auto club events. It was always a pleasure to use MSR, then arrive at an event and have everything I needed all wrapped up and prepared with my name on it – no scrambling, cash counting, or check writing necessary.

Yes, you will have another login name and password to remember, and yes, MSR does charge the club a small fee (5% of each transaction’s total, plus $0.30 per transaction) for all of the services they provide. However, we believe that by committing to MSR we are better able to ensure that all Schoneslanders encounter the best possible PCA experience every single time they choose to participate.

So, some lazy evening in the near future, please do sit down at a keyboard, dial up the website, and create a MotorsportReg.com account. As of this writing, twenty-two of your fellow members have already done so!

Above is the landing or index page for MotorsportReg.com. You’ll begin by clicking on “Create Account” in the top right of the page.

The keys here are the tabs at the upper right of the page. The first is Calendar.

So if you were wondering why you saw a bunch of Miatas towing tire trailers on I-80W on Friday May 27th, there’s your answer: SCCA Spring Autocross Nationals were in Lincoln that weekend! And look at that, there’s an Iowa Air National Guard Base hosting an SCCA event, which means I have some people to talk to at work about opening up the Des Moines Airport military ramp to autocrossing.

Peruse the rest of the tabs and the site at your leisure; MotorsportReg.com is your gateway to all the car stuff going on around you that you just didn’t hear about. See you out there!
