B y the time you read this the Board ofTrustees will have approved our new 5year plan to take us to 2021. This has

built on the 2013-18 plan and it has been aninteresting exercise to see just how much wehave achieved in the past 3 years.

In all areas, especially patient care and commercial,we have made significant changes to improve whatwe do, provide more services for our patients andensure we maintain our income to pay for these. Butwe are not complacent and we now have furtherambition to expand and enhance what we do both inthe Hospice itself at Brentry and also in thecommunity. The detail of this will be publicised shortly.

To pay for these enhancements we will continue todevelop our retail and fundraising operations whichhave to be very dynamic in order to remain effectivein changing circumstances. I hope you will want tocontinue to support us in order to enable St Peter’s todeliver the best care we can to the people of Bristoland surrounding areas, very much in keeping with therecent NICE guidelines on the Care of Dying Adults. Atthe same time we are negotiating with our NHScommissioners to try to secure additional statutoryfunding for services such as our 24/7 Advice Linewhich have been funded to date solely by charitabledonations. Thank you for your continuing support aswe enter another busy but I am sure successful year.

4 St Peter’s Hospice – For Patients, Families and Bristol.

About 2 years ago we launched ourNeighbours Network scheme, anew initiative where specially

trained volunteers or ‘neighbours’ visitthe homes of patients who live in theirlocal neighbourhood, offering non clinicalsocial and practical support.

The scheme has been a huge success andhad a significant and positive impact on thelives of both our patients and volunteers.Patients have reported a number of benefitssuch as a better quality of life, a reduction inloneliness and isolation and the maintenanceof strong links with their community.

Some of the types of support offered by ourNeighbours Network include:

n Popping in for tea and a chatn Staying with a patient whilst the carer has a breakn Accompanying patients in wheelchairs on a walkn Taking patients on outings or to appointments n Gardeningn Walking the dogn Offering a listening ear

and had dealt with the Hospice regularly. Afterearly retirement she decided to become anurse volunteer in our Inpatient Unit and didthis for over 12 years until early 2015.

However, she still wanted to do somethingregularly with the Hospice so decided to dothe training to become a Neighbours Networkvolunteer.

Margaret was matched with Julie Moss andthey now see each other weekly. Julie hasbeen looked after by the Hospice for 4-5years, attending Day Hospice twice and aFatigue and Breathlessness course. Julie hasoxygen equipment at home that helps herbreathe more easily, which means that sheisn’t able to get out much.

On the first visit when Julie opened the door,she was surprised to find that Margaret wasthe image of her auntie also called Margaret.This broke the ice and the pair got on wellfrom that day. Usually they chat over a cup oftea and Julie shares her memories of growingup in Bristol. If the weather is fine, Margaretmay take Julie out in her wheelchair.

They both get such a lot out of the visits.Although Julie lives with her son, she looksforward to seeing Margaret and chattingabout different things. For Margaret, it’s afulfilling role, knowing that a thing as simpleas having a chat can have such an impact onsomeone else’s life.

A lison is one of our paidComplementary Therapists andis based in the Hospice at

Brentry. She works in a team with theComplementary Therapy Team Leaderand eight professionally qualifiedvolunteer therapists, offering a rangeof therapies that complement theother services we offer.

Alison and the team follow national guidelinesfor the use of complementary therapies insupportive and palliative care, adaptingstandard therapies to suit the individual needsof each patient. Before starting any therapyAlison receives a referral and takes intoaccount the patient’s medical history and levelof mobility. She then suggests a therapysuitable for that individual. A very frail patient,for example, may be offered the ‘M’Technique – a series of gentle, soothing,stroking-movements. Or, a patient sufferingfrom anxiety may be offered reflexology,massage or aromatherapy.

The therapies have numerous benefits for thepatients – not only are they soothing andrelaxing, they can also help with symptomcontrol, including anxiety, low mood, sleepdisturbance, fatigue, breathlessness, and evenpain. Complementary therapies also improvethe quality of life for our patients, makingthem feel better about themselves and canbe a welcome diversion from the manyongoing difficulties.

Alison starts a typical day with a briefingfrom the Day Hospice team and thenprioritises which patients have the greatestneed that day. Then she meets with thevolunteer therapists, discusses the patientsand their individual needs, and allocates

patients to them. After lunch she writes uppatient notes, may see other patients, andassists the Complementary Therapy TeamLeader with the day-to-day running anddevelopment of the service.

There is great demand for the service and theteam can see patients from our 12 week DayHospice programme, our Inpatient Unit, andOutpatient referrals from our Community Nurses.

Alison is clearly passionate about her work andwhen not offering therapies to our patients,she works privately as a professionalreflexologist and healer, including mindfulnesstechniques. She is also studying for a Diplomain Adapting Complementary Therapies forCancer Care. This ongoing study, however, ismore than just another qualification. From theknowledge she has gained, she will be helpingin the future to introduce one of thetechniques, ‘H.E.A.R.T.S’, to their therapyoffering. This new therapeutic approach usesmulti-sensory comfort techniques, specificallyadapted for hospice patients.

“My work allows me to connect with patients ata difficult time in their lives and I feel privilegedto be able to offer these therapies that soothe,calm and comfort them.” l

It was at that time that shewas referred to the Hospiceand our Community NurseSpecialist, Martin Ball, startedvisiting her every few weeksfor about a year.

“Martin really helped toexplain things,” says Mark.“But he also helped us tohave discussions togetherand to make decisions aboutKarin’s care and the future. Heoffered advice and guidanceall the way through what wasone of the most painfulsituations anyone can findthemselves in.”

When Karin’s healthdeteriorated in August lastyear, she was admitted to theInpatient Unit at the Hospicewhere she spent the last twoweeks of her life. Mark

Mark Wilkins’ wife, Karin, was first diagnosedwith breast cancer in 2007, aged 45. Followinga course of chemotherapy and a lumpectomy,

she was given the all clear. However, in 2013 she wasdiagnosed with secondary breast cancer and given justa year to live.

“The staff looked after Karin’sneeds – both physically andemotionally. One night, whenshe was feeling anxious, oneof the nurses simply satholding her hand for hours -this was all she needed tofeel a little bit calmer. Karinwas a public health specialistand published author and shereally missed being able toread and write. Recognisingthat Karin could do withsome mental stimulation, thenurses made it possible forKarin to go outside and enjoythe beautiful Hospice gardensfor a while.”

Mark remarks on the waythat the Hospice staff notonly looked after Karin butsupported him and their threechildren as well. “When Karinpassed away the staff wereso sensitive, providing us withjust the right balance of spaceand support.”

received from the Hospicethat he decided to get somefriends together and run theBristol Half Marathon lastSeptember to fundraise. Sofar they have raised over£7,000 which is now helpingother patients and theirfamilies. Mark’s fundraisingefforts haven’t stopped there- this year he has organised agroup to take part in our Tourde Bristol event on 2 Apriland in June he is taking on atriathlon in the BreconBeacons to raise yet moremoney for the Hospice.

Our first Tour de Bristol cyclingevent last March was a hugesuccess with all 300 places

selling out fast and the event raisingover £60,000 for the Hospice. We aredelighted to announce that Tour deBristol is returning this year on Saturday2 April. There are 500 places, so sign upnow to avoid disappointment.

The ride will attract cyclists of all abilities withthree distances of 35km, 50km & 75km. Allroutes start and finish from Clifton CollegeSports Ground, Abbots Leigh and take in thebeautiful, picturesque North Somersetcountryside.

Past participant, Rob Tadman, who signed upfor the 75km route in 2015 took part inmemory of his wife Joanna, who passedaway at the Hospice in November 2014 aged35. Rob said, “The Tour de Bristol was a greatday out exploring the countryside,

enjoyingcake stops andmeeting otherriders and familieswhilst raising fundsfor the Hospice.”

“My personal highlights were climbing GoblinCombe (and the rapid descent of WringtonHill!) and the surprise call into ButcombeBrewery for a welcoming ale at the halfwaypoint. I am very much looking forward to the2016 ride – it will give me something to trainfor and burn off the Christmas excesses. Lastyear there were 15 of us who took part in Tourde Bristol and we raised over £4,000 for theHospice so I’m hoping to build on this in 2016.”

Libby loves baking and bakesall the time so Ready, Steady,Bake is a great excuse to bakeeven more. Libby decides whatto bake and her Mum helps herbuy all the ingredients. Shebakes all sorts of deliciouscakes including her favouritesrocky road, lemon drizzle,victoria sponge and flapjacks.

A couple of weeks before hercake sale, Libby sends outinvitations and also knocks onneighbours’ doors to invitethem. Libby and her familyusually have around 20 peopleturn up. Even the guests turnup with cakes! Libby alsoorganises a small raffle to raiseextra funds.

Local Pages raisesfunds through annual golf dayLocal Pages, or The Little Blue Book as it’s known,organised a charity golf day at the Bristol & Clifton Golf Club in August. This event was in memory of Boris Bernard-Hayklan who founded Local Pages. The day was well attended and supported by local sponsorship from companies including JH Group, Butcombe Brewery and BBL Batteries, as well as HSBC, NatWest & CBRE.

All proceeds from the day were donated to St Peter’s Hospice and wewere thrilled to receive a cheque for £4,182 raised from the event – ahuge donation!

St Peter’s HospiceSky Dive!Despite the great British weather sadly causing ourgroup sky dive to be cancelled we were delightedthat all of the group re-booked. Many jumped thefollowing day when the sun came out and gavethem a fantastic experience.

Two of our sky divers were Leah Spencer andJennifer Gilliam. Jennifer was jumping in memoryof her beloved Dad, Peter Gilliam, who was caredfor by the Hospice 19 years ago. Jennifer wastouched to see how many people remembered himfondly and wanted to contribute to her fundraising.

We were delighted with the amazing efforts put inby all our sky divers which included teams fromHargreaves Lansdown, Evans & Partners, Smith &Williamson, Makro and Coutts.

Bristol Law Society The great and good of Bristol’s legal professions gathered on 15 Octoberfor the Bristol Law Society’s Annual Awards Dinner. As the society’scharity of the year, we were honoured to attend and celebrate with allthe nominees, winners and other guests.

It was a great evening and we were delighted that a brilliant £2,503 wasraised on the night as well as having the opportunity to raise awarenessof St Peter’s Hospice to over 300 people.

Gleeds get on theirbikes Staff from Bristol-based property andconstruction consultancy, Gleeds, took onthe challenge of cycling 50 miles againstthe clock to raise money for St Peter’sHospice.

Between 21 and 25 September, 1,500staff across Gleeds’ 56 internationaloffices participated in local fundraisingevents in an attempt to raise £130,000for charity in one week – one thousandpounds for every year the organisationhas been in business.

In the South West, fundraisers fromGleeds ditched their day jobs and raised£7,000 for us as well as further fundsfor a Children’s Hospital in Cardiff. Theusually desk-bound team set out fromtheir Cardiff office, cycling across theiconic Severn Bridge and tackling someof Bristol’s grueling hills, beforereaching the finish line at their BristolParkway office.

In total, the business managed to raise£170,000, beating its target by £40,000!

We’d like to say a huge thank you to theteam at Gleeds for supporting us duringtheir marathon cycle ride. It was a greateffort by all and we’re very grateful forthe funds raised.

Our Christmas Market held atBristol Grammar School on 28November raised over £18,000.Thanks to all who helped or camealong on the day.

Thank you to all of our loyalvolunteers that ran stalls, donateditems and those talented peoplethat knitted, crafted and baked, wereally appreciate all of your hardwork!

Chew ValleyThe Group was busy last Autumn.In September, the fabulous Vox inFrox (a female chamber choir)gave a concert in Chew MagnaChurch to raise funds and it was afantastic evening.

In October we held a ’60s/’70sevening in East Harptree. Over ahundred locals were treated tofood of the era and dancing lateinto the night.

These two events brought our 10thanniversary year target ever closer.With the Annual Bridge Lunch inJanuary and a March Quiz we areconfident of reaching our £10,000goal. We are very grateful for thecontinued support of so manypeople in our community who givetheir talents and support ourevents with such enthusiasm.

PortisheadIt was a busy autumn and winter inPortishead. We organised a Party forPete Garden Party in our communalgardens in September. Our family,friends and neighbours enjoyed anafternoon of tea and cakes andraised £253 for the Hospice.

In October we held a concert inPortishead’s Somerset Hall withmusic from Dave Salt Big Band. Theconcert was a huge success raisingover £1,160.

Thank you to everybody who cameto our events or supported ourfundraising efforts, especiallySainsbury’s in Portishead whosupported all of our events last year.

Christmas Market Update

We started with a Flower Festival inThornbury. The flowers were superb,the special events were wellsupported and the concert byCantanti quite awesome.

We held a coffee morning at DaldryGardens and were warmlywelcomed by residents and visitors.

Our annual Golf Day was held inOctober in lovely weather andthanks to all of our supporters andplayers. Chirstmas cards sold well atcoffee mornings at Falfield and atAlveston in October and November.

Our 30th Anniversary lunch held atEastwood Park was a sell out andthe speaker, the Countess ofCarnarvon, was superb. We haveheld collections at AlmondsburyGarden Centre and Wyevale GardenCentre and thank these businessesfor their continued support.

Finally, thank you to all those whohave helped and supported. We arealways seeking help with collections,if you could spare an hour (or two)please ring Ruth on 01454 415648.

The draw for the Grand Christmas Raffle took place on 9 Decemberand we were delighted to present our first prize winner, Clive Finn,with a cheque for £5,000.

Clive received the cheque from Simon Caraffi, CEO of St Peter’s Hospiceand spoke of his delight of finding out he won.

“I was somewhat surprised, gobsmacked! I went out into the office andthey thought I was having them on. It was a great feeling and it hascertainly made this Christmas. I was at an art club and oddly had won abottle of Dove shampoo and decided to buy some tickets to support yourwork. I never expected to win.“ Clive added.

Clive already has plans for his winnings, “I am going to donate 10%back to St Peter’s Hospice and other charities, my son wants a newcooker and I would like a new front tooth for Christmas. It’s great to beable to do some good with it, and also get my smile back!”

It was another really successful year for the raffle, raising an incredible£52,000 so thank you to all who took part.
