IDEO

IDEO is an industrial design firm re-locating to Boston, MA. We were to design a party-wall building in a long narrow site on Newbury St. in downtown Boston. The firm needed to have office locations as well as interactive work locations to work with clients. They also needed a workshop for modeling purposes. I focused on having as much light as possible enter the locations which were to be used most frequently. This caused a stacking of office locations on the top three floors. I also placed three smart-glass paneled windows in the conference and workshop locations to aid in privacy while still allowing clients to view inside.

BIcycle storage anD changIng facIlItyBicycle storage was a project in which we were to design a storage facility for 20 bikes. Our client was a Boston based office which was working to promote employees to bike to work. The facility had to have separate restroom and changing areas for males and females. My design was based around the motion of a bike and the delicacy of a bicycle. The skin of my facility was designed as a grid of “spokes” which were supporting aluminum blades, which conveyed the motion of the building. I also provided a grand entrance for both males and females with the bike storage wall directly within, separating the clean, shower locations from the dirty, bike locations in a clear and concise way.

everson museum of artThe Everson Museum of Art, located in downtown Syracuse, NY is I.M. Pei’s first museum. Pei designed in a brutalist concrete form, with a monumental poured in place concrete stairwell. This stairwell is almost as intriguing as any single piece of art displayed in the building. It was designed to allow large amounts of natural daylighting into the building also. This daylighting illuminates the lobby throughout the course of a day. The build-ing has a very clear cen-tral location on every level which provides a location to gather when visiting the museum.

Beatty hall facaDe reDesIgnBeatty Hall is the campus center at Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA. The design was to incorporate different aspects of the campus on each level. My design was a curtain wall facade system with curved aluminum “rib-bons” running through the building. The major concept was to stitch Beatty Hall back into the campus and quad. The ribbons were to create an aesthitic and at-tractive exterior while pro-viding individual experiencial locations on the interior. The fourth floor has an ex-terior patio location, which is accessible through the Student Leadership office. This patio space has the ribbons running overhead providing a true experience of having the ribbons tying the building together.
