The main objectives of MUGO are:• To be a one-stop service unit for

exchange students and visiting professors (inbound and out-bound).

• To engage, coordinate, and assist students, faculties, institutes and centers in international exchanges.

• To collect and manage data on exchange activities.

• To promote global partnerships and facilitate positive relationships between Mahidol University’s local and international staff and students.

Mahidol University continues to move forward with the internationalization

of its teaching, training and research activities with the opening of its new Global Education Office under the MU International Relations Division. Officially launched in August 2013, this new service is based at the Mahidol Learning Center, Salaya Campus and is also known as MUGO.

MUGO aims to encourage and support greater international student and staff exchange at Mahidol University. Therefore, it will provide support for student and faculty exchange program services and offer expertise in processing exchange applications. In summary, the service intends to serve as a one-stop center for supporting international student and staff exchange.

MUGO is one of several Mahidol University’s initiatives intending to coincide with the launch of the ASEAN Community in 2015 and as a response to an increasingly globalised society in general (both of which have made internationalization a priority for academic institutions across the region). As a pioneer in this field, and recognizing the advantages an international experience provides students, Mahidol University continues to establish productive working relationships with institutions worldwide. MUGO therefore intends to capitalize on the university’s proactive and international approach to higher education.

The smooth operation and management of any modern

healthcare facility depends on it being able to monitor its use of medical products and their movement throughout the supply chain (from manufacturer and distributer to patient). A standardized healthcare product identification system can help achieve this, and ensures that medical products are visible at any point in the supply chain. Standardization also assists in the sharing of information as it allows hospitals to come together with distributors and create a national database on the supply of medical products.

All of these factors have numerous advantages for both patients and healthcare managers, and therefore a standardized identification system can be considered as important part of a national health program as the training of doctors or nurses.

Despite being a regional leader in healthcare services, Thailand has traditionally relied upon an often incomplete or fragmented supply chain, characterized by healthcare providers using their own in-house identification codes and recording systems. Not only did this affect the traceability of products, but it also prevented the development and use of a standard national data exchange system.

However, thanks to the efforts of the Faculty of Engineering’s Assoc. Prof. Duangpun Kritchanchai and the team from the Healthcare Supply Chain Excellence Centre (LogHealth) this situation is quickly changing.

Talking to Spectrum, Assoc. Prof. Kritchanchai explained how the centre

Improved Healthcare Supply Chain and

Logistics Management

has been supporting the use of standard product identification on healthcare products, (similar to the barcodes seen on everyday products). These codes don’t just include information on the price of the product, but also information on the manufacturer, batch number, expiry date etc. This allows a standard database on the manufacture, movement and use of healthcare products to be created; one that all hospitals using the system can automatically enter and exchange data with.

As a leading provider of healthcare in Thailand, with over 120 years experience, Mahidol University is a keen supporter of the LogHealth initiative and has given its full support to trials of a bar-coding system at its Ramathibodi and Siriraj hospitals, (who treat over a million out-patients annually). This has enabled a single database (the National Drug Information Exchange) on healthcare product information to be created between the hospitals, which have now been joined by Srinakarin and the

Bangkok Hospital group in the input and exchange of data. Training is essential; therefore the centre has just conducted its first data input workshop with 100 of the medical suppliers for these hospitals.

LogHealth now plans further improvements to the database and the launch of electronic data information exchange system (an automatic system which prevents human error in data input). Thanks to its focus in this crucial area, the centre has achieved a lot in a short-period of time. As such, the team remains committed to streamlining the supply of all healthcare products across Thailand and beyond; a commitment will benefit us all.

of the “Champion Award” at the 7th International Convention on Rehabilita-tion Engineering & Assistive Technology 2013 (also known as i-CREATe 2013). Held in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea from 29th - 31st August 2013, the competition provided a platform for students from across the Asia-Pacific region to showcase their ingenuity. The winning team was honored to receive their award from H.R.H Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand for their innovation in developing the “Ankle-Foot Passive Motion Device for Footdrop”.

The device is designed for the rehabilitation of stroke patients and the prevention of complications from foot drop disorder (including ankle joint stiffness and muscle contracture). In the past rehabilitation with passive motion machines has been confined to special clinics as these machines are expensive, bulky and too complicated for patients to use on their own. In contrast, the new device is easy to use and affordable, making it ideal for use at home.
