September 2018 2018 Sahyadri Friends Group 1 Spectrum Editorial by Aditi Kibe This month we bring you Ganpati pooja vidhi, for welcoming Ganpati in your homes. Very neat compilation done by Guruji Nitin Kale of Indore, with the necessary ingredients and mantras, everything you need at one place. We hope you will find it useful. September is also the month for Janmashtami, celebrating the birth of Shree Krishna, the eight incarnation of Lord Vishnu. To celebrate this joyous festival, we have included two beautiful poems by bhakt-kavi Surdas and Mirabai. Both were extremely devoted to Shree Krishna and their devotion is reflected in the poems. I think every festival re-enforces the importance of love and harmony. Both these festivals are celebrated in India on a grand scale, bringing together people from all communities and that is the beauty of all celebrations. Sahydari founder Chaitrali Chitre, added another feather in her (already full!) cap as she was invited to perform at Lit-O-Fest in London, and also to the VIP lounge at Godiva festival. She shares her experiences. Finally, Shabana adds more information about essential oils. Happy Reading all and do send us your thoughts! On occasion of Janmashtami, we bring you two beautiful poems by

devout poets Surdas and Mirabai

My Experience at Lit-O-Fest, by Chaitrali Chitre

I had the privilege and honour of being a part of a group dance during the Lit-O-Fest this year, which was held at the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan, London on 6th September 2018. It was a unique experience as we 5 dancers who danced as a group stayed in different parts of the UK and met only once for practice. We saw dance videos and practiced at our individual homes connecting through video calls. The mediator who brought us together took it upon herself the task and responsibility to gather us and organise the performance. Hats off to her dedication! I was delighted to see my team sharing the same passion and dedication

toward dance, we all travelled all the way to London for this performance. When there is love and passion for the art form from within, we don’t need to worry about synchronisation… it just happens….

Dance was the language of expression, bonding and connectivity for us and we created magic.

I am so glad I got this opportunity and I hope it will be a stepping stone for other events too.

Chaitrali and Sahyadri volunteers were also invited to the Godiva festival VIP lounge to raise a toast! Congratulations to the team! Go Sahyadri!

Home Remedies

Essential Oils (Part 4)

Concluding this series on essential oils with a little recap

and some tips for beginners.

Recap:- An essential oil is a highly volatile liquid extracted from a plant source and are primarily used in “aromatherapy”. At home, they can be either used to inhale using diffusers or can be mixed in carrier oils such as coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should never be used directly on the skin. A 10% dilution is recommended (1ml of essential oil with 10mls of carrier oil).

A few tips for beginners:

Essential oils must be stored in amber or cobalt blue coloured bottles and it is always better to buy a limited amount; the frequent opening of the bottle leads to exposure to oxygen, which reduces the potency of the oil. Ideally, they must be stored away from light in cool or dark places. Essential oils are usually available in limited quantities; 5ml, 10ml or 30ml. It is always advisable to buy a limited quantity, to begin with, and then increase depending on the consumption.

Essential oils can be divided into various aroma categories; herbs, citrus, woody, earthy, floral, spice, camphor and resin. Normally, all essential oils come with a disclaimer that they are meant for external use only, but essential oils in the herb, citrus and spice category can be safely consumed; of course, they need to be diluted with carrier oils. Care needs to be taken never to consume essential oils with water as oil and water are immiscible.

It is always advisable to use droppers when measuring essential oils; please remember that essential oils are highly concentrated, and dilution is mandatory when using it directly on the skin or for ingestion. Never rub the oil directly on the skin; it is better to inhale them to check the product. Never throw the oils in the sink; it could lead to blockages in the drainage system. Never use essential oils on cuts and bruises even though it is diluted in a carrier oil.

Essentials oils are expensive, and the quality of these oils differ from company to company. It is always advisable to read how the oil is extracted and whether the oil is pure or diluted. Please stay away from cheap and contaminated soils, always seek guidance and prefer reputed companies. It is always recommended to check the botanical name of the plant and composition of the oil.

There are different varieties of plants; for example, there are about 40 different varieties of lavender which is grown in different locations across the world and the aroma of all the varieties differ, but the oil extracted from these varieties have similar properties. Lavender essential oil that is distilled from the flowers of Lavandula angustifolia, is called the classic lavender in aromatherapy.

As with all medication, essential oils must be kept away from children and pets. Hope you enjoy your journey with essential oils.
