SPECTACULARSPRINGRACING
he starting gates have whipped open for this year’s Spring Racing Carnival, with loads of
spectacular horse racing action ahead.
Melburnians love their gee-gees and, at this time of year, the whiff of horse leathers is the
fragrance of choice, especially if you live in the Moonee Valley. And there’s nothing like a day
out at the races to lift the spirits by being part of the buzz unique to this vibrant area.
Of course, this wonderful carnival is not just about the horses. It’s just as much about the
f-words: fashion, food and fun times with friends.
The following pages are filled with ideas for fashionistas wanting to make a splash on race
day. Check out some of the latest styles to be found in trendy boutiques, all within a gallop of
the tracks. You will also find ideas for jewellery accessories and make-up to add pizzazz to
your glam race-day outfits.
If you’re planning on going the whole hog with friends (and why stop at less?), a picnic
hamper packed with foodie treats is a must. If you want some ideas, read the story on page
34 for some inspiration.
The track, the bookmakers’ ring, the mounting yard, the stands, the marquees, the lawns:
whichever is your favourite hangout, there will be no shortage of excitement, eye candy and
elegance at this year’s Carnival – studded with stars on and off the track.

The first thing that strikes one about the Boathouse is that it looks like it’s always been there, a rooted part of the Moonee Ponds landscape. The children’s parks, the Maribyrnong River, people walking and talking from bridge to bridge, kids laughing – all of these make up its essential fabric. It’s a meeting place, an entry in people’s diaries and, of course, an eating place. It’s the kind of restaurant that
feels like home, somewhere to share a cup of coffee, a
pizza or a little tapas with a glass of wine.
General manager Paul Romanella says: “We’ve been
listed in The Age Good Food Guide since opening, but
it’s about more than that. We’re not aiming for a chef’s
hat like our big brother, Fenix in Richmond; we’re forging
our own identity but with the same drive for excellence.”
What you can expect
We always said from the beginning that we wanted it to be the Stokehouse of the West, people’s favourite place.
The Boathouse has a team of chefs who have shared time in some of Melbourne’s most famous kitchens – the likes of The Press Club, Cumulus and Cutler & Co.Great ingredients, simple food with bags of flavour is what they deliver. “ After travelling to New York this year, Gary decided the burger had to come back here. Perfect fat 100 per cent beef, soft American bun, mustard and, of course, pickles! You just can’t beat it,” Paul says. “But that’s not all we have because we love our food.”Mediterranean-inspired at heart, the chefs also feel free to cook a little of what they love, playing with ingredients
and techniques. They have a real belief in their wood-
fired pizzas being the best – and they are certainly real
temptations. One of the most popular features house-
cured prosciutto, pear and blue cheese. Another is lamb
with mushy peas and mint, and traditionalists will find the
Calabrese hard to go past.
The menu is constantly changing, with the chefs inspired
by the bounty of each season: fresh, simple and delicious
is the focus. Mezze shared dishes and seafood, such as
whole flounder served with lemon and kipfler spuds,
share the menu with many family-friendly dishes.

SPECTACULARSPRINGRACING
aving a picnic taps into a rich vein of tradition. It’s the kind of
gathering that evokes childhood memories of Sunday drives
to the country, stopping by a river and getting out the blanket
on which to spread the homemade goodies.
A picnic at the races is also a traditional affair, one that has people
of all ages ready to get into the spirit of the day. It’s quite simply
the best way for a group of friends to create their home base from
which the whole day’s fun and festivities flow.
There are quite a few outlets where you can buy a hamper packed
with eat-treats. Provata Urban Larder and Café in Ascot Vale is one
such provedore of all things delicious, with owner Steve’s hampers
taking out the hassle of preparing food yourself.
But if you do want to prepare your own hamper - a way to get
exactly what you and your friends like to eat - and probably costing
less, here are a few ideas to help inspire you:
he fillies on the field don’t have to worry about the colours they wear
because the decision’s made for them. But let’s face it: what we wear
to the races is an all-important choice, often agonised over for weeks
ahead. Our minds race with possibilities and questions. Fascinator or hat?
Sexy heel or sensible flat? Will it rain, be horribly hot or chillingly cold?
Glamorous and sophisticated or chic and casual?
While we regrettably have no say in the weather, the choice of outfit is
made loads easier with all the trendy stores found on Puckle Street, Coles
Showgrounds and Moonee Ponds Central shopping centres. Gals are actually
spoilt for choice – but this can be its own sweet dilemma.
From the top: last year was all about the 1920’s cloche-style hats, this
year sees a resurgence of the 70’s raffia hats – but fascinators are always
spot on.
As for hair, up-dos can be tricky in windy conditions but can look Audrey
Hepburn-great under a fascinator. Long hair, out loose and in top condition,
is a girl’s best fashion accessory and complements just about any outfit.
Perky short hair can be its own perfect head covering, but also looks sassy
under a fascinator.
In the centre: Vintage is still on-trend so a romantic dress from the 50s is
race-day perfect. Block colours, with bold pieces played against each other,
are a fresh direction so rival the jockeys with a loud, proud statement.
At the bottom: Shoes should be sexy but not treacherous, so a wedge can
be a good option for navigating the track precinct. Gladiator sandals and
stacked heels are still on the catwalks this season.
When it’s all said and done, the best piece of fashion advice? Be yourself,
walk like the queen of trackside and you’ll be a head turner for all the
right reasons.
For the first time ever a stylish racegoer has the chance to
become the ‘Face of Tatts Cox Plate’.
The competition will be run on Tatts Cox Plate Day,
October 22, and is presented by styletread.com.au.
