The Supreme Knights Announcement

The following is a reprint of an article that appeared in

the March 2013 Issue ofColumbia magazine

Following the announcement [of the popes resignation],Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson issued a statement on

behalf of all Knights of Columbus:

In these remaining days of his papacy, our thoughts and

prayers are with Pope Benedict XVI, who has worked so

hard in leading the Church and has always been such a

ood friend to the Knights of Columbus, he said. In

addition, we pray for all those cardinals who will take

part in the conclave and for his successor, that God may

inspire them as they carry out the mission with which

they are entrusted.

Brothers,

Like you, I was shocked and initially saddened by the resignation

of Pope Benedict XVI. After I had time to think about it, though,

realized just how much our Holy Father truly loved us and how much

he was willing to sacrifice for us. I will always remember Pope

Benedict XVIs wonderful smile and that bright and constant twinklein his eyes. He had a special gentleness and humbleness about him

that made us feel so comfortable. At the same time he was the

consummate teacher, the consummate academician, the consummate

leader. He had a unique ability to explain very complex theologica

issues so we could all comprehend them.

After the Pope Left Rome

However, it did not take long for certain individuals to attack him and through him our Church and our

faith. They attack because of the teachings of our Church as they relate to the sacredness of all life from

conception to natural death, to the sacredness of traditional marriage and family, the infallibility of our

Holy Father, and that only men can become Priests and that they cannot marry. They object to the fact that

our Church does not change its basic tenets in response to current cultural trends. I regrettably believe that

some object to the Catholic Church because it is an obstacle to what they believe is progress towards their

secular goals. However, I was encouraged by the just released Knights of Columbus Marist poll that foundthe vast majority of all American Catholics and an even larger percentage of practicing Catholics had a

positive impression of Pope Benedict XVIs years as pope. Vast majorities said he had a very positive orpositive impact on the direction of our Church, on the moral direction of the world and on their own lives.Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said of the results: That so many felt he had a positive impact on their lives,

their Church and their world speaks volumes to the good that he was able to do as pope.

I had the very special privilege to see Pope Benedict XVI in 2008 at Yankee Stadium when he visited

the U.S. I will never forget that very special day and I will never forget this very special Shepherd. He has

recently given us an extraordinary gift in the Year of Faith. It is outstanding opportunity to rediscover our

journey of faith and become better witnesses to the love of Christ.

I know that my Brothers will join me as I pray for Pope Benedict XVI, for our Church, for the Cardinalswho will participate in the Conclave, and for the next successor of Saint Peter.

The Holy Sees Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone,

serves as the acting head of state until a Pope is elected andhe is known as the chamberlain or camerlengo.

On Thursday night February 28th, Cardinal Bertone sealed

the papal apartment inside the Vatican, which will not be

reopened until a new pope is elected.

He placed the seal on the pope's study and bedroom and

took possession of the Apostolic Palace.

The Vatican is meanwhile busy organizing the process by

which the popes successor will be chosen.

Cardinals from around the world are gathering in Rome and

met for the first time on Monday, March 4th, in a behind-

closed-doors gathering known as the General Congregations

in which they will discuss the challenges faced by the

Church and assess potential candidates.

They will also decide when the election process will begin.

On Monday, March 4th, Cardinals began

meetings to set the conclave date and discussproblems facing the church.

Among the first orders of business was the

oath of secrecy each cardinal made, pledging

to maintain "rigorous secrecy with regard to all

matters in any way related to the election of

the Roman Pontiff."

I think it will go on for a week at least,

Cardinal George Pell, the Archbishop of

Sydney, told The Daily Telegraph. In 2005[when John Paul II died] it lasted nine days,

although that included a period of mourning.

The cardinals will decide when to initiate the

conclave, the election held within the Sistine

Chapel in which 115 elector cardinals under

the age of 80 will decide by secret ballot who

becomes Benedicts successor.

There is widespread speculation in Rome that

the conclave could start on March 11, allowingplenty of time for a new pontiff to be elected

by the start of Holy Week on March 24, which

leads into Easter.

The Pope will become Pope Emeritus

Benedict XVI, rather than returning to beingplain Joseph Ratzinger.

The Pope greatly enjoyed watching television

footage of him leaving the Vatican by

helicopter, swooping over Rome and landing

at Castel Gandolfo, a spokesman said.

After saying a final farewell to a crowd of

thousands of well-wishers in the piazza in

front of the castle, the ex-Pope ate dinner and

watched television.

Exhausted by the days events, he prayed and

then retired to bed and had a sound nightssleep, Father Lombardi said.

Benedict is expected to stay for two months

in the 16th-century castle, which has beenthe summer residence of the Popes for

centuries, before moving into a former

nunnery inside the Vatican walls.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has exchanged

his red papal shoes for simple brown ones

given to him on his recent trip to Leon in

Mexico.

He now wears a simple white cassock

without the mozzetta the short cape thatcovers his shoulders.

Vatican City, 1 March 2013 (VIS) - Today, the first day of the Sede Vacante,

Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College of Cardinals, has begun to summon the

cardinals to the first of the General Congregations, as provided for by the Apostolic

Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis.

This first General Congregation took place on Monday, 4 March, at 9:30am in the

Synod of Bishops Hall. A second General Congregation is also scheduled for 5:00pm

in the same place.

Following is the text of the letter:

As prescribed in the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis of 22 February1996.., I have the duty to officially communicate to Your Eminence the news ofthe vacancy of the Apostolic See from the renunciation presented by Pope Benedict XVI

effective from yesterday evening, 28 February, at 8:00pm in Rome.

On communicating this to you I fulfil my duty of summoning Your Eminence to thefirst of the General Congregations of the College of Cardinals, to be held on Monday, 4

March, at 9:30am in the Synod of Bishops Room in the Paul VI Hall.

The General Congregations will then continue normally until the complete number of

Cardinal electors is gathered and the College of Cardinals decides the date for those

Cardinal electors to enter into Conclave..

On my part, I am pleased to take this opportunity to send you my fraternal greetings.

Vatican City, 1 March 2013 (VIS) The director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr.Federico Lombardi, S.J., related some information regarding the Sede Vacante and

the first hours of Benedict XVI after having left the pontificate in a press

conference this afternoon.

Fr. Lombardi spoke this morning with Benedict XVI's personal secretary,

Archbishop Georg Ganswein, prefect of the Papal Household, who told him that,

yesterday, His Holiness, who was very calm and serene, had watched several news

programs and expressed his appreciation for the work of the journalists as well as

for the participation of those who had assisted in his departure from the Vatican

and his arrival at Castel Gandolgo. After a brief walk through the Apostolic Palace he

went to bed and slept very well.

Today, as always, His Holiness celebrated Mass at 7:00am and

then prayed the Liturgy of the Hours. In the afternoon he has

another walk planned at 4:00pm, through the gardens of the Castel

Gandolfo Apostolic Palace, to pray the rosary. Benedict XVI brought

with him various books on theology, history, and spirituality. At the

moment he is reading from a book by the Swiss theologian Hans Urs

von Balthazar.

Vatican City, 4 March 2013 (VIS) Early this afternoon Fr. Federico Lombardi, S.J., director of the Holy SeePress Office, informed reporters on the proceedings of the first of the General Congregations of the

College of Cardinals.

The cardinals' meeting took place this morning at 9:30am in the Synod Hall, which is located above the

Paul VI Audience Hall in the Vatican building created by the Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi.

The Congregation was headed by Cardinal Angelo Sodano, dean of the College , accompanied by Cardinal

Tarcisio Bertone, S.D.B., camerlengo of the Apostolic Camera, and Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri,

secretary of the Congregation for Bishops. The members of the College took their places following thehierarchical order of precedence: first those belonging to the order of Cardinal-bishops, then the Cardinal-

priests, and finally the Cardinal-deacons. Each cardinal has an assigned seat to facilitate the process of voting.

After the opening prayer, Veni Sancte Spiritus, followed by the Adsumus prayer, Cardinal Sodano

greeted those present in Italian, informing them of the procedures related to the Sede Vacante and

how the Congregations, regulated by the Apostolic Constitution Universi Dominici Gregis, will operate.

There were 142 of the total 207 cardinals present this morning; 103 of those present were Cardinal electors.

The gathered cardinals swore to keep secret the deliberations for the election of the future Pope, afterwhich the Cardinal dean, Angleo Sodano, read the oath in Latin, everyone present reciting along with him.

After that, each cardinal, according to their order of precedence came forward and took the oath

before a Crucifix and with their hand on the Gospels . This process occupied a good portion of the

meeting's time.

Three assistants to the camerlengo were also drawn by lot from the Cardinal electors of each of the orders.

After being chosen these three also took their places next to the Camerlengo at the head table.

According to tradition, it is expected that the preacher of the Pontifical Household, Fr. Raniero Catalamessa,

O.F.M. Cap, will give the first meditation to the College of Cardinals early this afternoon.

During the course of the meeting,Fr. Lombardi added, Dean Sodano proposed to the cardinals that, if they

sent a message to the Pope emeritus, he would give a written response [at] one of the following meetings.The

Holy See Press Office Director also commented that the atmosphere was very friendly and that the

cardinals took a 45-minute break for coffee and to exchange thoughts.

From 11:45am until 12:30pm, 13 cardinals took the floor to address issues mainly related to the process of

the proceedings and the questions to be faced, also bearing in mind the results of the latest Synod of Bishops on

the New Evangelization.

You could define this initial encounter,Fr. Lombardi concluded, as serene, constructive, and positive.

Vatican City, 5 March 2013 (VIS) Fr. Federico Lombardi, S.J., director of the Holy See Press Office, in thisafternoon's press conference, gave updated information on the development of the General Congregations.

In conclusion, the text of a telegram for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, which was signed by Cardinal Dean

Sodano, was approved. It reads:

Fr. Lombardi reported that the preparations for the Conclave have begun in the Sistine Chapel so it is now

closed to visitors.

To His Holiness, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, CastelGandolfo.The Cardinal Fathers, gathered at the Vatican for theGeneral Congregations in view of the next conclave, sendyou their devoted greetings and express their renewedgratitude for all your illustrious Petrine ministry andfor your example of generous pastoral care for the goodof the Church and of the world. Vatican City, 6 March 2013 (VIS)-

To date, there are 113 Cardinal electors present. Tomorrow the two remaining Cardinal electors are expected.

This morning 18 cardinals addressed the gathering. Without going into details, the director of the Holy See

Press office gave a general overview of their nature. The major theme,Fr. Lombardi said, was the Church

in the world, the New Evangelization. Other topics included the Holy See, its Dicasteries and relations with

bishops. A third theme was a profile of expectations for the next pope in view of the good government of the

Church.

The College has a great spirit of preparation that is serious, profound, and unhurried,Fr. Lombardi clarified.

Perhaps that is why it still didnot seem opportune to take a vote on the date of the Conclave, which a largepart of the College could sense as something forced in the dynamic of reflection. It also needs to be kept in mind

that some cardinals are still arriving and it would be a sign of respect for them to wait until the College is

complete.

In conclusion, the director of the Holy See Press Office confirmed thatthe Fisherman's Ring has been

scratchedover,that is, rendered unusable.

Vatican City, 6 March 2013 (VIS) This afternoon in St. Peter's Basilica, on the occasion of the General

Congregations preceding the Conclave, the College of Cardinals will pray for the Church.

The celebration, which will be held at 5:00pm at the Altar of the Cathedra, will begin with the recitation of

the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary in Italian and Latin. Following the Rosary will be the Exposition of

the Blessed Sacramentand a brief time for Adoration. Then simple recitation of Vespers (the Church's

evening prayer) will be presided over by Cardinal Angelo Comastri, archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica. The rite

will conclude with Eucharistic Benediction offered by Cardinal Comastri.

(AGI) - Vatican, Mar 6 - The papal seal and the pope's ring,

known as "the ring of the fisherman" has been annulled by

scratching, said Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi.

There was no need to break them, like in the past, as it was

sufficient to make them unusable, heexplained.

6 March 2013 LOsservatore Romano[= The Roman Observer) is the "semi-official" newspaper of the

Holy See.] -

The cardinals' Fourth General Congregation was held this morning, Wednesday, 6 March, in the Synod Hall.

In the meantime work has begun in the Sistine Chapel closed since 1:00 p.m. yesterday.

Vatican City, 7 March 2013 (VIS). Finally, referring to the outfitting of the Sistine Chapel for the

Conclave, preparations for the elevation of the pavement are continuing, the windows have been blacked-out,and the two stoves for producing the fumata (smoke signalling the election or non-election of a Pope after

each vote) have been installed. Also, the Pope emeritus' coat of arms, which is created with flowers in the

Vatican Gardens and visible from the cupola of St. Peter's Basilica, was removed to prepare the flower bed for

the new Pope's insignia.

Vatican City, 8 March 2013(VIS)The eighth General Congregation of the College of Cardinals hasdecided that the Conclave will begin on Tuesday, 12 March 2013. A pro eligendo Romano Pontifice

Mass will be celebrated in St. PetersBasilica that morning. In the afternoon, the cardinals will enter into theConclave.

Holy Smokes!

Is thatwhite smoke coming from the Sistine Chapel?

One of the most famous traditions of the papal succession ritual is

the appearance of smoke from the chimney of the conclave room.

The eligible cardinals conduct a secret ballot until someone

receives a vote of two-thirds plus one. The ballots are burned aftereach vote. Blacksmoke (straw is mixed with the ballots) indicates

a failed ballot, white smoke means a new pope has been elected.

Since the cardinals meet in isolation, it's the only way to inform the

public about the proceedings.

During the coronation of the new Pope, flax is burned and the

words Sic transit gloria mundi, "Thus passes the glory of the world,"

are recited. It's meant to represent the temporary nature of earthly

glory. Popes come and go, but the papacy, one of the world's

enduring institutions, continues to provide spiritual guidance to

over a billion Catholics.

Yes, the smoke is white; we will have a new Bishop of Rome!
