Special Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Meal Served The choice of four desserts was just the
“icing in the cake” during the special Valentine’s Day Sweetheart luncheon. The choices included red velvet cake, chocolate cupcakes, homemade cherry cheesecake and angel food cake with strawberries and whipped cream. The rest of the meal consisted of choices of chicken breast on a bed of rice with cheese sauce, tender roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and Prince William vegetables. There was also an assortment of beverages available and dinner rolls. After the residents and their guests were served, team members were invited to join the residents for the meal.

WE WISH YOU WELL
Shady Oaks provides extensive physical, occupational, and speech therapies. The healthcare team offers training and physical conditioning with a goal to return home safely. This month we were excited to send the following back home and wish them well.
Cheryll Vogel Loyd Ellis
Greetings! The month of March is upon us and we have been greatly blessed! For the second time in my four and a half years here we hit our capacity of 80 residents. Although it has been snowy and blizzarding outside, we have been nice and warm inside, continuing to provide quality care and dignity in life to all of those we are privileged to serve and whom call Shady Oaks “home.”
Another great blessing was the results of our recent State Survey. Every year the Department of Inspections and Appeals from the State of Iowa comes for a week-long inspection of our facility. They look at records, watch meals being prepared and served, observe medication pass, watch resident cares, and take a tour of the building, among other things. There are over 500 “f-tags” (federal tags) that a facility must comply with. After the inspection was complete, the surveyors had two concerns: closet door bases needed repaired/finished and medication room and storage room cupboards did not have a finished and sanitizable surface. That’s it! Both are pretty easy fixes. I am so pleased with how our team interacted with the surveyors as well as the results of the survey. To only receive two f-tags and have no quality of care or quality of life issues is amazing! A big thank you to our wonderful residents and families as well…we do it all FOR you and BECAUSE of you!
Have you visited our website lately? We are at www.shadyoakslakecity.com. You can look at our photo gallery, view job opportunities, and see the most recent activity calendar. We have a section for resident/family member/team member testimonials as well—if you have a compliment you would like to share and be willing to have it posted, please let us know. Word of mouth and personal recommendations are always the best marketing tools! On our website you can also view an electronic version of our newsletter. Another cool feature is called In The Loop. Care Conversations
Skilled Nursing Care: Fact vs. Myth Today’s Skilled Nursing Care centers: separating fact from fiction Over time, Skilled Nursing Care centers, like all areas of health care, have advanced in terms of clinical practices,
resident rights, quality improvement, and the overall approach to the needs and wants of residents and families. Yet, even today, many misperceptions about nursing homes persist, professionally called Skilled Nursing Care centers. Separating fact from fiction will help you stay open to all of your care options.
Here are some common myths worth exploring:
Myth: Residents cannot make their own decisions.
Fact: It is a resident’s legal right to make choices regarding activities, daily routines, health care and other aspects of life. The center’s responsibility is to provide an environment where residents can live together safely and harmoniously. While this some t imes r equ i r e s a balancing act, centers’ over-a rch ing goa l s invo lve respecting residents’ rights and preferences and providing quality care in a supportive environment.
Resident councils provide residents a say in care. These self-governing bodies of residents voice concerns to staff and to one another. Residents are also encouraged to prepare advance directives to specify and safeguard care preferences in the event they are unable to express their wishes.
Myth: Skilled Nursing Care centers have unpleasant odors.
Fact: Today’s Skilled Nursing Care centers should not have persistent odors. Because some residents are incontinent, an occasional odor may be noticeable,
especially in the morning, but should not linger.

Valentines For Vets Shady Oaks residents, team members and friends
were excited to participate in the 2014 Valentines for Veteran’s project! We found out about this project through an article in The Graphic-Advocate from the week before.
Culinary Director, Minnie Huster (right), spear-headed the project and worked with the Life Enrichment Department to create homemade “Valentine Hearts” for residents and team members to sign. Resident LaVon McCarty (left) helped complete the Valentine’s.
Valentines were sent to the VA Central Iowa Care System in Des Moines, the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, and the Iowa City VA Health Care System in Iowa City.
Lovin’ The “Littles” Even with a kit, craft and art
projects with small children can be time consuming. It didn’t bother Shirley Winter though, as she very much enjoyed the counting, positioning and gluing of each piece as she made a Valentine’s Day ornament with the children. It is these intergenerational moments that the residents love the most; not only the time they each get to spend with sweet, talkative, little ones, but also the memories that are brought back from the time they used to spend with their own children and grandchildren. We appreciate Mrs. Claussen bringing her classes out on a monthly basis.
