SUMMER MEETING

CONSTRUCTION TRACK:Reinforced Footings without SteelGary Faust, Irving Materials, Inc.(IMI), Greenfield, IN

A major force in the Midwesternready mix market, IMI has long beenassociated with quality concrete. Now teaming up with a key pro-ducer of structural steel fibers, IMIhas produced a steel reinforcedconcrete design for footings that isnearing its ICC approval and willbecome a significant opportunity forcontractors in the residentialindustry. This seminar will provide acomplete look at the research thathas gone into footings without steelbars and how they can reduce thecosts of your residential basementswhile meeting the requirements ofthe buildings codes.

Impact of Thermal Stresses onConcrete Foundation WallsRaj Jalla, Consulting EngineersCorp., Reston, VA

In general, steel reinforcement is notrequired in most residential founda-tions. We all know this to be truefrom a quick review of buildingcodes. While many foundations areexempt from the need for rebar, there is one consideration thatbuilding codes do not account forand that is Thermal Stress. Fromthe engineer that has brought theCFA online engineering, this seminarwill discuss the impact of thermalstresses on concrete foundationwalls. Two case studies will beprobed to examine the causes aswell as analysis of resulting effectsand then pursue ideas of remedialmeasures and design concepts toprevent these problems.

How to Stay Out of Trouble withWall/Deck AnchoringBrent Anderson, Brent AndersonAssociates, Inc., Fridley, MN

Why is it suddenly a critical topic, that is, the correct use of anchorstraps and bolts? There have beenchanges to requirements for CCALumber treatment creating concernsfor the type of metal used and ofcourse, there is the latest change inthe IRC 2006 ushering in a new eraof over design. Our industry is fullyaware that it is not the sill to the wallconnection that is a problem butrather how the carpenter finishes thediaphragm nailing the floor structureto the sill plates. This seminar willdiscuss all of these forces pulling theissue one way and then another andprovide sound guidance as to whatis likely to happen in the comingmonths ahead as well as what canyou do to protect your self.

Luncheon with Exhibitors12:00 – 2:00 p.m.

Take the opportunity to get a firstlook at the exhibit booths before therush of the opening show. Luncheonwith the exhibitors provides you witha more relaxed time to survey thecompanies that are in attendanceand supporting this event and makeyour plans for visiting them through-out the meeting. Make some of yourinitial contacts during this time sothat you can manage both theextensive indoor as well as outdoorexhibits waiting for you.

Retirement Plan Options forBusinessesDoug Staebler, Custom ConcreteCompany, Inc., Westfield, IN

What is one of the weakest areas ofour business planning? Mostcompanies or management-levelpersonnel would respond it isretirement planning. What are thegoals that should be established forowners and for those looking totransition to the next stage in theircareer or life? This seminar will helpyou understand what types of plansare currently available includingwhat are some of the cost-effectiveretirement plans for businesses tooffer to employees. It will also focuson how we can help employees savefor retirement and what retirementplanning we should consider asbusiness owners including bothinvestment and tax strategies.

Reducing Workers CompensationCostsLoren Arp, CRT – Cost ReductionTechnologies, Davenport, IA

Escalating injuries and increasingmedical and insurance costs canmake it impossible for a company tomaintain its competitive edge. CRTprovides a cost-effective measure forindustry to reduce workplace injuriesbefore they occur. CRT uses the latestIsokinetic Testing technology andequipment to match the physicalcapability of the worker with thephysical demands of the job. CRTcombines physical testing expertisewith statistical analysis that’s basedon a proprietary database todetermine the employees injury riskpotential. This seminar will showhow CRT’s statistical analysis andtesting yields a 99% accuratemeasurement and how this ap-proach will eliminate most overexer-tion and repetitive motion muscu-loskeletal disorder high-risk injuriesin the workplace before theyhappen.

Developing a Strategic Vision forthe Cross Cultural Work SiteChris Krueger, Zerah Services Inc.,Englewood, CO

Most construction companies havethree main ethnic cultures generallydefined as: Anglo-American,Mexican-American, and Mexicanimmigrants. These cultures comprisethe working and managerialelements at any modern construc-tions company all three are integralcomponents that effect overallcorporate performance. One of thecorporate challenges for the futurewill be how to best design andexecute safety and training pro-grams that address the culturaldifferences present in the corporatelearning and working environment. This seminar describes the issues andoffers a program that can be thefirst step in this process.

Preventing Builder ProblemsAfter You LeaveMike Hancock,Basement Contractors, Edmund, OK

What are THE most common issuesthat bring you back to a project longafter you should have collected yourmoney and closed the files? Waterand cracks are probably near or atthe top of your list and yet what howdoes your warranty help? How cana “solid” relationship with thebuilder help? Learn ways thiscontractor has found methods tolimit exposure through qualityrelationship building and educationresulting in faster closings onprojects…however, sometimes it justdoesn’t matter what you do.Included in this seminar will bethoughts on common issues such asfoundation and framing structuralissues, leaking windows and roofs, backfill depths, landscaping, saferooms, code issues (like win-dows of viewouts), anchoring

systems, stud height vs. form height, framing options, concrete vs. wood, and add-on building options likeconcrete stairs, walkout pit areas, fireplace surrounds etc.

CFA ROUND TABLESThe popular “Round Table” formatcontinues during this year’s summermeeting. The shapes may berectangular, or “U” but the conceptwill be the same. Open, frank, andhonest discussion between smallgroups of CFA contractors isperhaps the best exchange ofinformation. There will be one topicdiscussed at each round table andattendees will have the opportunityto visit several during the morning. The sessions will be audio taped sothat the highlights and informationfrom each session will be availableto all. Topics include:

• Unionization and PreventionUnionization – a word that strikesfear into most business owners. Isthis happening to your company? What are your options? What areyour rights? What are you legallybound to do when your workersdecide they want to unionize? Whatexperiences can you share?

• Succession PlanningPerhaps more than any otherconstruction business, the pouredwall contracting firm is as much ormore often than not a familybusiness. Generation after genera-tion find why this industry is soattractive to make it a career andyet, there are issues that need to bedealt with as retirement looms forone generation and anotherprepares to take ownership…orperhaps more difficult, ownershipneeds to transition to other key non-family management. What are theissues your company faces? Whatdo you have in place?

• Precast Wall CompetitionYou’ve participated in the survey, you’ve perhaps felt the stress of thisproduct infringing on your market. What should the CFA do and justhow significant is this competition?Share your opinions and helps usshape the direction for this nextlayer of impact to the residentialindustry.

• Working with the Trades– A Concrete Homes Councilsponsored tablePerhaps one of the biggest issuesfacing the builder in making thedecision to try or switch to all-concrete, above-grade homes is theimpact this will have to the tradesbeyond the shell. How are theelectricians, plumbers, cabinetsuppliers and finishers impacted byconcrete homes? How can theconcrete contractor make thistransition smooth and effective?

• Marketing Above-Grade Homesin Stick Markets – A ConcreteHomes Council sponsored tableThe Midwest, Northeast, OhioValley, Rocky Mountains, West Coastand Gulf Coast are all highly-notable regions where concretehousing is working to establish apresence and a growing domi-nance. However, the home ownerand builder know and understandstick-frame housing. What can youdo to make the advantages knownand position yourself to head offthese concerns when trying tomarket an RCF home?

PRODUCT

DEMONSTRATIONSBack by popular demand and madepossible by location are the Na-tional Associate Outdoor Exhibits. This year, for the first time, we willbe adding product demonstrationsto the line-up making this an all-dayaffair.
