VOL-Stahl Shanghai is a representative office of VOL-Stahl GmbH, the leading supplier of hot rolled and cold drawn special steel profiles based in Germany. With its production plant in Omutninsk, Russia, VOL-Stahl GmbH is one of the largest pro-ducers of special profiles in Europe and worldwide. In order to meet the ever-growing demand in high quality profiles on the Chinese market and be closer to our customers, in 2014 we decided to establish a representative office in Shanghai.
Our production site in Omutninsk, Russia, is a complete steel mill with its own steel-making furnaces, rolling mills, cold drawing benches and milling machines. Modern production equipment and rich experience gathered through decades cover the production process on all stages of the value chain and provide a unique capability to control quality of manufac-tured products and adjust their properties, if required.
Rapid development of the automatic machinery and manufac-turing lines is boosting demand on the linear motion systems and puts new requirements on the producers of linear guides and components. Linear guide rails must not only be extreme-ly precise, have high wear resistance and work under ever increasing speeds, but at the same time they must be manu-factured with lower costs. In this situation, producers of linear bearings are confronted with a problem of combining high product quality with cost effectiveness, and the only way to find solution for this issue is to work with a right partner, who is able to offer products, which meet exactly same requirements.
Thanks to the complete manufacturing process – from steel melting up to cold drawing and machining – VOL-Stahl has unique possibility to offer complete range of profiles for guide rails and carriages, from miniature rails up to the largest di-mensions. We offer not only cold drawn profiles for guides and carriages, but also hot rolled profiles, which allow to eliminate cold drawing process and machine carriages di-rectly from the near shape profile. Our own steel melting fur-naces allow us to choose from a wide range of DIN, AISI or JIS steel grades, or develop a specially modified steel grade, which suites specific customer’s requirements at best.

Steel melting furnaces and modern rolling mills, in particular, represent our main competitive advantage, which enables us not only to manufacture special profiles with high accuracy and defect free surface, but also to choose freely between wide range of steel grades and modify their chemical com-position, in case if customer requires specific properties of material that are not delivered by standard grades.

Cold drawn profiles for linear motion systems
Hot rolled carriage profiles for linear motion industryTypical raw materials for the production of carriages are ei-ther cold drawn profiles, forged parts or hot rolled flat bars. Each of them has its pros and contras, so, for example, cold drawn profiles require only minimum mechanical processing to arrive to the final shape of the carriage, but relatively high costs are usually considered as a disadvantage. On the other hand, hot rolled flat bar is the cheapest pre-material, but at least 30% of it goes into chips, and machining costs them-selves are quite high, as flats must be completely machined to achieve needed dimensions of the carriage. Forged parts offer a good solution for big sizes with relatively small con-sumption quantity.
Cold drawn profiles are a typical raw material for the manufacturing of linear guide rails and carriages. High precision, smooth blank surface and low decarburization layer make cold drawn special profiles a perfect choice for linear guides of different shapes and sizes. Thanks to the multiple rolling mills and drawing benches with various power parameters, VOL-Stahl can manufacture whole range of linear guide rails and carriages for the linear motion industry.
We at VOL-Stahl believe that for medium and high consumption quantities the optimum solution for production of carriages can be provided by the hot rolled special profiles. Hot rolled pro-files can provide the best price/value ratio, as they are close to the final shape of the carriage and at the same time have lower production costs in comparison with cold drawn profiles or forged parts, the quality of metallic microstructure normally are even better in terms of uniformity, which offer easier machina-bility and, combining with proper steel grade design, it is easier to maintain the target hardness and quality level of the car-riages. Our engineers can prepare a suitable design of the hot rolled profile, basing on the dimensions of the final part. Nor-mally, we add 1,5 mm to the surface of the carriage and con-sider possible angles and corner radii, which are determined by the hot rolling process.

Quality and R&D capabilitiesThanks to the complete in-house production – from steel melting, up to the final drawing steps – VOL-Stahl controls the whole manufacturing process and can guarantee the highest quality on each production step. During steel melting we take multiple samples to check the chemical composition using spectroscopic analysis. On the next manufacturing steps - hot rolling and cold drawing - we take several samples from each batch to control profile sizes, mechanical properties, micro- and macro-structure and purity level. All these quality checks are conducted on modern equipment by highly skilled engineers.
Basing on our knowledge of the production process and properties of steel as a material we are always interested in consulting our customers in matters of finding a new steel grade, which better meets specific requirements, or modify-ing an existing material to achieve higher mechanical properties, improve machinability or corrosion resistance. Also, our engineers can advise how heat treatment, specific microstructure and grain size can influence properties of profile and the final product, as a result.
