Think you don’t have the space to Deck the Halls?
Check out these space-saving ideas!
1. Dress up the chairs– add Christmas cheer to your everyday furniture without
taking up added space! Try a festive coloured bow or small wreath!
2. Make your wrapping paper the décor– you already have your presents set out… so
let them double as décor! Add sprigs of foliage, beautiful ribbon and twine or even
jingle bells!
3. Hang Mistletoe– make the most out of your out-of-reach places otherwise left
untouched! Try dressing up your standard mistletoe with greenery or ribbons.
4. Substitute a Branch for a Tree– No room for a full-sized tree? One branch can be
plenty! Put a fir tree branch in a beautiful vase, add ornaments and even some light
flocking. Think Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree up a notch!
5. Give Your Shelves a Seasonal Makeover– if you already have curio cabinets or
bookshelves out, add some extra pieces to make them Yule ready! Set some bulbs
beside books, add some simple garland and lights...that’s it
6. Improvise a Mantle– No mantle? String up twine from an existing shelf. Add some
garland and you have a cheery place to hang stockings!
7. Raise up the Tree– don’t feel pressured to drag in a huge tree! Get a smaller tree,
but put it on a decorated side table or stool. It’s festive without being intrusive.
8. Focus on the Scent– smell goes a long way to make your house feel festive with
stovetop potpourri. Add cranberries, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and rosemary to a pot
with simmering water.
9. Use Your Windows– If you don’t have much wall space, use your windows! Place a
simple wreath, ornaments or garland to cheer up your window dressing
10. Go all out on the Door– We all have one: a front door! Share your cheeriness with
everyone who walks by. Try the classic wreath or add some snowflakes, ornaments or
tack up Christmas cards!

As the Holiday Season
approaches, many of us are
busy with preparing for parties,
shopping, and spending time
with family and loved ones.
However, for many seniors who
do not have these exciting
things in their lives, the Holiday season
(sometimes affecting people from Halloween
through to Valentines Day) is more stressful
and depressing than happy and joyous.
Working closely with clients facing these
issues, it is sometimes important to ask,
“how can I better help ?” Here are a few
practical tips to try and relieve some of the
loneliness and stress our clients are feeling.
1. Acknowledge their Feelings– For some
of our clients, they are not able to be
near their family/friends or they may
have just lost someone close to them.
They may feel worse than usual; they
may need to cry. This is a time to allow
them this release and avoid trying to
immediately “fix” the problem or make
them happy. It is important they know
you are a safe place for them.
2. Reach Out– if they cite loneliness as a
major issue through the holidays, help
them look for options to get out!
Kelowna is full of craft fairs, senior-
specific events and celebrations
associated with religious affiliations.
Sometimes, these events are only
listed online, so helping your client
to maneuver the web is a great
help!
3. Budgeting– financial strains and pre-
conceived ideas about how much
money needs to go in to gifts or dinners.
Help your client create a realistic holiday
budget for family and other social
events. This can help relieve stress and
make an enjoyable holiday realistic!
For Example: Homemade gifts, gift
exchange etc.
4. Encourage Healthy Habits– We all do
this: pack on the holiday weight! It’s
easy to forget about our healthy diets
and exercise and instead, indulge all the
delicacies made easily available.
Encourage your client to go for a walk,
make sure they’re sleeping okay and
suggest they have a healthy snack
before parties to minimize indulgences.
5. Seek Professional Help— despite all
best efforts and intentions, clients may
need referrals to their doctors or mental
health professionals. If you feel your
client could use this help, contact the
Seniors Outreach Office.

Christmas Blues
...to the volunteers who helped make our Aging Well workshop such a huge success!
Ella, Jenny, Isla and Brooke– your smiles, hard work and attention to detail helped make
the morning and afternoon run smoothly. We received amazing feedback from the
participants who were so thrilled with the day! Thank you for taking time out of your
week to help with the event!
