Pines and Needles was founded by brothers Josh and Sam Lyle back in 1995. It all started when the youngsters (then aged 15 and 13) came up with the brainwave of loading an old horsebox with Christmas trees from their family farm in Scotland and taking the long journey down to London. After a few years the kilted crew grew in size, the Internet beckoned, and the rest, as they say, is history.

We now have over 20 seasonal re-tail outlets around London and the south of England in addition to our online store, and bring Christmas cheer to thousands of families every festive season.

Every year Pines and Needles supply and install hundreds of display trees for councils, shopping centres, football clubs, restaurants, hospitals, churches, hotels and embassies as well as private homes.

We have nearly twenty years of experience installing and lighting large trees. Trees up to 20 foot can be put up using sheer manpower alone but for any trees above this height we use a HIAB lorry with lifting equipment. Heavy duty civic stands are used for all outdoor trees and sandbags are used to secure the legs of the stand in the event of high winds. Guy ropes can also be used if there are available fittings/anchor points to add extra stability. Custom made boxes can be crafted to encase the stand in. order to make it visually more attractive.

We can wrap the trunk and some or all of the branches with various densities of LED coverage to give the desired look from a light dust-ing to a denser, brighter finish.

Combine with roofline or window lights and a Christmas tree, wreaths and and garlands, for a complete look.

Our high quality rubber cable lights are connectable, reducing the need for many power sockets. We use low energy LED lights to minimize the risk of fire. We can also connect several sets together so that only one socket is required. We use weather proof dri-boxes to keep the power connections safe, and c-form connections can also be fitted on request.

Most often trees situated outdoors are decorat-ed solely with lights, however when the tree is primarily destined for a daytime audience it can be more appealing to decorate it with baubles.

When an outdoor tree is to be decorated as well as illuminated we normally recommend using shatterproof baubles rather than glass, as the latter are susceptible to frost, and are a health and safety hazard. We can also use ribbons and bows if required.

We also can supply extra large shatterproof bau-bles for very large trees.

We instal large trees for many church-es, cathedrals, hotels , restaurants and events, some with just lights and others with a full decoration service. Trees can also be snow flocked if re-quired.

We can install trees with lights, and complement them with garlands, wreaths, and swags. Mantelpieces, banisters and door frames become warm and inviting when adorned with stunning fresh greenery and high quality lighting.

We have been commissioned to create scenarios using live trees to completely transform otherwise lack lustre office spaces into dreamy winter wonderlands. It’s hard to imagine a more idyllic backdrop to an annual Christ-mas party!

For the Ideal Home Show we flocked our massive trees with snow where they cre-ated a magical forest at the entrance to The Earls Court London and Event City Manchester Shows. Inside both shows a forest of magical, snowy trees bejewelled and lit spectacularly, were suspended from the ceiling of each vast hall and formed a stunning focal point for the entrance of the annual Christmas shows.

Depending on your requirements, we have our own dedicated team of fabricators and engineers on hand to design and build all the necessary trusses and stands for your display.

Sturdy metal stands called civic stands are used with sandbags to weigh down the legs for stability. Be-spoke boxes can be designed, built and supplied to cover the stands in

an aesthetically pleasing way and we can paint these to order to match your chosen colour scheme or cor-porate branding.

We also have various other cosmeti-cally attractive options for stands in-cluding rustic whisky barrel stands.

Alternatively you may already have a socket fitted in the ground at your

location and we are also experts at fitting into these. In addition to expertly fitting trees into stands, we also use guy rope at-tachments where necessary forex-tra stability in high wind areas.

We grow our own trees on our own plantations. While that may not sound like a big deal, it makes a massive difference to the finished product that will eventually complement your living room or office.

Planting our own trees under the careful supervision of our own arborist gives us complete control over every aspect of the trees development from planting and pruning to feeding and cutting. This degree of care and control ensures that every tree that pass-es through our gates has been able to achieve its full potential and is the fullest and freshest example of the species. Being ver-tically integrated also allows us the ability to control how the trees are grown and replanted in the most sustainable manner.

traditional Christmas trees ideal for outdoor use

Norway Spruce (Picea Abies)

These are the traditional Victorian Christmas Trees. They have a fresh scent and elegant fine foliage. These trees are not soft to the touch and tend to drop their needles. They are ideal for outdoor use. For indoor use we do not recommend having a Norway Spruce delivered before mid December as trees brought inside in November and early December will almost certainly be shedding their needles by Christmas.

If your Christmas tree is going to be situated indoors then we strongly recommend a non-drop variety as op-posed to a traditional Norway Spruce as they are far superior at handling warm indoor environments and can retain their needles for longer.

These This variety is the preferred choice of modern Britons as the needles are not pointy and the tree benefits from its ability to retain its needles even in very dry conditions. The tree has flattened needles which are a glossy dark green on top with two blue-white bands of stomata below giving the Nordmann Fir its signature two-tone depth, like that of the olive tree. Available from 3ft tall.

sustainabilityHere at Pines and Needles we are passionate about trees and all things green! In fact Pines and Needles is committed to helping the environment in every way we can. Here is a list of the meas-ures we take to ensure that we play our part in helping the planet, along with some insights into our Environmental Policy:

• We are carbon positive for most of the year as our trees absorb Carbon and emit Oxygen. It is estimated that each acre of Christmas trees produces enough oxygen to meet the needs of 16 people. During the Christmas season we are Carbon Neutral as any emissions from transportation and delivery vehicles is offset by the trees still growing on our plantations. Real Christmas trees are better for the environment than artificial trees because they do not use non-biodegradable plastics and metals, and can be recycled through chipping for use in gar-dens.

• For every Christmas tree that is harvested, Pines and Needles replants seedlings in its place, ready to begin the cycle of growing, fixing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen again for us straight away.

• We always use power-saving LED lights as they use a fraction of the energy of incandescent bulbs.

SeedOnly sources which are sustainable and do not present any threat to endangered species are used.

Planted areaThe area of land used for the cultivation of Christmas Trees is subjected to a sur-vey on environmental; ecological or ar-chaeological impact.

Cultivation of TreesThe growing of trees will be done in ac-cordance with the best practice indicat-ed by research in this country and over-seas.

ChemicalsThe British Christmas Tree Growers As-sociation will commission and encour-age research into methods of dealing with pests and disease which reduce or eliminate the need to use chemical herbicides or pesticides. Growers will have available for inspection any re-quirements under the COSSH Regula-tions and will guarantee that any use of chemicals will be in accordance with the current Pesticide regulations and will be the minimum necessary to deal with the particular problem.

WildlifeChristmas Trees provide an excellent habitat for many bird species. British Christmas Tree Growers take account of the habitats of these birds in the cul-tivation of their trees. The cycle of grow-ing and harvesting Christmas Trees is particularly conducive to birdlife and no work will be done which will disturb nests or young birds.

HarvestingThe cutting of Christmas trees is done in winter and has little or no effect on breeding or disturbance of wildlife. Trees will be harvested and handled to ensure maximum freshness for the purchaser.

hoW We WorkH & SSafety is our highest priority. We take every effort to mitigate the risks involved with the installation of these larger trees. We under-take detailed risk assessments, and our teams are trained to work at height and use specialist lifting equipment including forklifts and HIAB lorries. We also make it a priority to ensure the integrity of the built and natural environment surrounding the installation.
