Cancer is never welcome in our lives, yet it continues to intrude. Often when a life is thrown off course the small

things become important. Thanks to a special gift to the Foundation from a breast cancer survivor, our Women’s Imaging Center is now able to provide some added comfort to breast cancer patients who have recently undergone lumpectomies or mastectomies. These women are grateful for our help as they get their lives back on track.

Camisoles. Soft cotton camisoles, especially designed to hold draining gear and cushioned inserts, allows women to feel comfortable after surgery. The Foundation was able to buy one hundred of these camisoles, providing an extra measure of care and comfort for our patients during the difficult battle with cancer.

Shower Shirts. Women who have had mastectomies must use extreme care when showering after their surgery and often face the choice of not showering or covering with a big trash bag, which does not foster emotional healing. With this special contribution, over the next year the Women’s Imaging Center will be able to provide mastectomy patients specially-made shower shirts that can help them enjoy a more normal routine after their surgery, further supporting them through the emotional and physical tolls of breast cancer.

CHiP Care... Day In and Day Out

In 2011 the BMh Foundation gave Beaufort Memorial almost $1 million to help support the hospital. Did you know it would take $42 million in gross revenue from additional patient care activity for the hospital to generate that same $1 million to invest in improved technologies and services? The significance of every dollar you have contributed is worth far more than you might have imagined!

here are some other interesting Foundation and hospital facts that may surprise you:

DID YOU KNOW?

Community support for community health makes a difference. proof of this is in the Chip mobile truck, purchased in 1998 with

community gifts to the BMh Foundation. The truck is still seen all over the county providing health screenings for low or no cost to anyone who comes on board. Chip stands for Commu-nity health Improvement program. Since 1998, Chip has traveled to neighborhoods, churches and local events, providing an opportunity for thousands of residents to receive the healthcare they might otherwise have never gotten. almost 5,000 patients received a screening this past year, hundreds more than the previous year. twenty four percent of the screenings revealed abnormal results.

Many patients who are under a doctor’s care use Chip’s services to manage their conditions by monitoring their numbers between doctor visits. One patient whose Chip screening indi-cated possible diabetes followed up with her physician, who confirmed the disease; she can’t help but believe the screenings helped save her life because they alerted her to the problem.

thanks for your continued support of this important service. Jason and Jamie welcome you to stop in anytime so they can thank you too because they see firsthand the good Chip does, day in and day out.

Giving feels good... especially when it makes your community healthier and better.

Thanks to your gifts, CHiP received an interior face lift and equipment upgrades last year; now the CHiP truck and its team are helping more people than ever.

Jason Meyer, Sr. Mobile Wellness Specialist and Jamie Cuff, Nurse Practitioner, take quality healthcare throughout the county thanks to community gifts that funded the CHiP truck as their mode of transport and office space all-in-one.

total funds granted to BMh since 1990: $16.7 million•Valentine Ball net proceeds since 1990: $3.7 million •annual water costs for BMh: $130,000 per year •annual electricity costs for BMh: $1 million (or $2,740 per day) •annual cost of food for BMh: $1,176,730 •BMh uses 1000 tons of air conditioning annually (enough to cool 300 houses)•Recent annual payout from the endowment Fund to support BMh operations: $370,148 •

Community Support Provides Most Advanced Respiratory Equipment

tapping community contributions to the Foundation, Beaufort Memorial has purchased nine puritan Bennett 840 Ventilators, changing out an older fleet of respirators with varying capabilities. The new system allows us to adjust each unit as needed to meet

the specific respiratory needs of newborns, children and adults. “This advanced technology enables us to trend, monitor and maintain patient ventilator synchrony to reduce days on ventilation, lower patient costs and shorten hospital,” says Jennie Cannon-Szalay, Respiratory Therapist Clinical Coordinator.

patients can rest assured that this new ventilator offers the best in patient safety and effectiveness. Our Respiratory Therapy team likes to boast that this fleet of ventilators puts our abilities at the top of the field! Thanks for making it possible with your gifts to the Foundation!

A grant from the Foundation fulfilled the need to upgrade and standardize ventilators hospital-wide.

Never-Ending Impact

Due to the generosity of supporters like you, the BMh Foundation is able to help the hospital develop vital new programs and purchase state-of-the-art equipment to continually improve patient care. The Foundation Board has approved over $917,000 to support

the hospital in the upcoming fiscal year. here’s a preview of a few items your gifts will allow BMh to purchase in 2013:

• MRI Breast Computer-Aided Detection: Computerized detection device used to identify lesions not easily seen with the human eye. The machine highlights areas of concern for a closer evaluation.

• Surgical Table: This special table facilitates the anterior hip approach by providing more options for patient positioning.

• Video Conferencing System: The tumor Board will utilize the new conferencing system to review active cases with Duke physicians to ensure coordinated and seamless care directed specifically to the patient’s needs.

• Automated External Defibrillator (AED): The automated external defibrillator is a portable electronic device that diagnoses life threatening cardiac arrhythmias and is able to treat through defibrillation. This device, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm, can even be operated by non-clinical staff.

• Spinning Bikes, Recumbent Bikes, Treadmills, and EVO Bicep Curl: This exercise equipment will expand lifeFit’s services later in 2013, after the new, larger fitness center is operational.

Beth Schnarr and Jennie Cannon-Szalay, Respiratory Therapists, assist a young

baby with the aid of the ventilator.

Your gifts will continue to make a difference with the capital items approved for the upcoming year.

So many people have benefited from your generous support of the BMh Foundation.

Your gifts are helping people access the care they need and equipping our caregivers with the latest technology and resources for excellent patient care. We are always pleased to answer your questions, help you learn more about the hospital and Foundation, and show you firsthand how your dollars are making a difference in local healthcare. You have made an impact, and we we are grateful.

Thank you!

BMH prepares to unveil Pratt Emergency CenterThe 18-month construction of the George N. Pratt MD and Sarah Meyer Pratt Emergency Center is nearing completion.

Construction on the pratt emergency Center has more than doubled the size of our eR. In January 2013, the emergency Center will offer patients 24 private exam rooms, “results waiting” areas, and many other physical improvements to enhance the quality of care and patient flow in our level-3 trauma center.

a less visible part of this project had been expansion of the hospital’s emergency power system. Three 800kW generators with a paralleling switch gear distribution center are at the core of this component. This significant upgrade allows for full continuation of electrical power throughout the hospital during power outages.

Thanks to your generosity, the BMh Foundation has received over $3 million to help offset the costs of this milestone project to provide excellent healthcare to our community.
