Special foundation drilling, also named geo-construction, is needed in most civil engineering work like roads, buildings, bridges, canals, harbours and dams. These jobs are very challenging and always on a tight schedule. Drilling in urbanized environments requires a fast and low sound level drilling technique to minimize the noise pollution for resident.

Furthermore, in a lot of geo-construction drilling projects it is essential that the drill bit doesn’t deviate. This can cause inaccurate results which leads to dangerous situations, especially in dam and water works.

Sonic dramatically reduces project risks and completes projects 3 to 4 times faster than other drilling techniques. This makes it possible to use less drilling rigs on site and finish projects on or before the deadline. The possibility of using small and powerful equipment saves on mobilization costs.

Sonic drilling is not harmful for its surroundings

Although the Sonic drilling technique uses vibration, this will not damage the surrounding environment. Different than low frequency vibrations; the high frequency Sonic vibration doesn’t travel! It has been successfully used next to gas lines, delicate constructions and in dams.

Geotechnical sampling and testing

Sonic sampling will provide high quality, full recovery samples. The unique drilling technique makes it possible to sample both soft and hard overburden formations.

Sonic sampling can be combined with in-situ soil density tests like Standard Penetration Testing (SPT). This provides valuable data needed for construction design of civil engineering work.

Installation in all overburden formations

The combination of Sonic vibration with rotation enables you to drill through all overburden formations. Sonic drilling is also fast and efficient in a mixture of soft and hard material. Due to the high frequency vibrations a layer just around the drill string fluidizes softer formations. Rotation makes sure that the sonic vibrations are evenly spread to break harder formations. Installation of the foundation material is usually through the inside of the drill casing which ensure that the hole does not collapse.

B&P Soil sealing, the Middle East:

In collaboration with B&P Soil injection the CompactRotoSonic-V crawler was used to enable B&P’s soil sealing. Soil sealing is a process in which a water retaining injection layer is applied.

Many current construction projects use underground construction layers because there is little to no groundwater abstraction and a dry/clean construction pit is preserved.

SonicSampDrill utilized both the AquaLock and CoreBarrel to effectively place 4000 injection tubes on dehpts ts up to 45 meter.

The world wide contractor Royal Dutch BAM needed a Gewi anchor installed for the foundation of an Aqua duct. A large rig with a mast of 50 meters was used to allow drilling down and retrieving the pile without the need for connecting or breaking casing.

With the MidRotoSonic the drilling time to reach a 35 meter depth with a 190 mm casing was less than seven minutes. During retrieval of the drill string, grout was injected via a swivel under considerable pressure.
