Every kilogram counts

In international goods transport the maximum payload plays a crucial role. Transport compa-

nies need trailers with cargo areas that can be efficiently utilised for different types of cargo. With the new S.CS UNIVERSAL X-LIGHT curtainsider semi-trailer, Schmitz Cargobull offers the ideal trailer solution for this purpose. The lightweight semi-trailer weighing upwards of 4,975 kg is the efficient transport solution when it comes to transporting heavy goods in large quantities.

To gain even more payload, a new floor concept has been developed and aluminium components have been integrated into the chassis and body. Without any compromises in terms of the chassis’ robustness. Furthermore, the chassis neck height has been reduced by 30 mm to 150 mm. This increases the

available loading volume in the interior.

The modularity of the body enables the S.CS UNIVERSAL X-LIGHT curtainsider semi-trailer to be de-ployed flexibly. Since every minute counts in logistics, the combina-tion with the POWER CURTAIN body is especially efficient. Normal loading and unloading processes are faster as the body does without

Increasing data potentials

Dear Readers,

Today, information shapes every economic sector. In spite of many upheavals, the change now underway is only in its initial stages. It is clear that goods transport, in particular, will be massively digital-ised and analysed. A milestone on this path is marked by the “Smart Trailer World”. The focus is on the implementation of the “100% SMART” strategy. We are now factory-fitting every refrigerated box body with a telematics unit as standard, with the curtainsiders and all other trailer typed to follow in the medium term. The increasing fitting of the trailers with sensors as well as the data exchange via interfaces provides transparency of cargo data and load conditions. This information about the load is becoming ever more important to shippers, as they want to know where the cargo is as well as its present condition. Telematics offers ever more ways of supplying this information and also a means of influencing the individual transport steps.

Digitalisation creates added value even in the service area. Our new “beUpToDate” app, for example, offers data-based remote diagnosis, increases trailer availability and reduces repair costs. Virtual reality is used in Service Partner training and spare parts are appropriately assigned to each trailer via QR code scanning.

We look forward to further actively shaping the “Smart Trailer World” with you.

editorialGetting back on the road as fast as possible

In case of a breakdown, trans-port companies naturally want to get back onto the road as

soon as possible. As part of its modular service portfolio, Schmitz Cargobull offers services ranging from the replacement of a worn tyre to full breakdown assistance across Europe. This means that, in the event of a repair, customers are able to resume and smoothly pursue their daily business as soon as possible.

With the Full Service Trailer, Full Service Tyres and Full Service Cooling Unit service modules – the latter covering especially repairs to

Emission-free coolingWith the S.CUe, Schmitz Cargobull has put a cooling unit on the market that is powered solely by electricity and intelligently helps to save resources.

E lectric mobility concepts can help to permanently reduce harmful emissions. The

Schmitz Cargobull S.CUe cool-ing unit also makes an important contribution to CO2 reduction. The electrically driven “electric semi-trailer cooling unit” (S.CUe) shows its special strengths primarily in distribution transport, especially with a view towards emission-free delivery in urban areas.

The intelligent electric system with an integrated inverter reliably cools and heats the freight solely via its powerful batteries, with a cooling capacity of up to 15,900 watts and

a heating capacity of up to 9,100 watts. These energy storage devices are fitted on the landing gear and in the rear area of the reefer semi-trailer so cleverly that the trailer’s loading capacity is unaffected and enough space for a pallet box remains. A modular system enables scaling of the battery capacity to a total energy of 65 kilowatt hours. The weight of the cooling unit is only slightly higher than that of a conventional diesel-driven unit.

Another new feature is a smart control unit which detects any opening of the door of the reefer semi-trailer and automatically

the Schmitz Cargobull S.CU trans-port cooling unit – the customer is able to optimally safeguard the op-erating reliability and functionality of the trailer and its components throughout their entire service life. The Full Service Trailer package covers all repairs of wearing parts including labour and materials, maintenance, legally required checks and breakdown assistance across Europe for a fixed month-ly price. In the case of the Full Service Tyres service module, tyre impact damage and the tractor unit tyres can also be included as an option. Around 1,700 Service Partners and approximately 1,500

Schmitz Cargobull tyre service partners are available for the service. Another approx. 2,500 tyre partners are available via manufacturer networks.  sh

bus connection with the central TrailerConnect telematics unit, the CTU 3, which in turn controls the door locking system. By entering a four-digit PIN, which is stored in the TrailerConnect portal and can be edited, the rear door can be safe-ly opened and locked. Appropriate symbols and LEDs on the pad itself show the current status of the door locking system at all times.

On trailers with the Schmitz Cargobull S.CU cooling unit, the key pad for operating the door locking system is already integrated into the display of the cooling unit. This avoids additional hardware and the costs associated with it.

Another feature of the Schmitz Cargobull door locking system is its controllability via geofencing. It is only when the trailer is driven into a predefined area that the door is automatically unlocked. Con-versely, this also applies as soon as the trailer leaves a certain area or has covered a certain distance. The system then automatically locks the door. This fully automatic function provides maximum security for the cargo and enables the door to be controlled without manually inter-vening on the trailer locally.

Schmitz Cargobull Telematics is extending its TrailerConnect telematics system by adding new functions and creating inter-faces to other telematics systems.

The “beSmart” app enables the driver to keep a close eye on the trailer data.

Smart view of the trailerWith two new apps, Schmitz Cargobull facilitates the monitoring of loads and trailers. Users are informed in real time via push messages on their smartphone.

A drop in the trailer’s cooling output, open doors or faulty sensors can quickly lead to

serious consequences. With this in mind, Schmitz Cargobull has devel-oped the TrailerConnect “ beSmart” app specifically for drivers.

The “beSmart” app displays all measured data, enabling drivers to monitor the current trailer status at all times. The app connects to the CTU 3 telematics control unit wirelessly, also enabling control of the door locking system and the cooling unit. The trailer’s temper-ature printer can also be directly operated from the app.

Individual items of information and functions can be freely con-figured on the uncluttered user interface. This way every driver can adapt the “beSmart” app to their individual needs.

The new TrailerConnect “beUp-ToDate” app is customised for

Many fleets now utilise multiple telematics systems. So companies can still work with a single portal, an increasing number of telematics providers are creating interfaces to other solutions. For example, Schmitz Cargobull has created a comprehensive interface to the idem telematics system and, as a result, a large amount of idem telematics information can now be displayed in the TrailerConnect portal 2.0. This includes data from the cooling unit, the EBS running gear as well as sensor information. Here, the data volume depends on the trailer equipment and trans-mission of idem telematics infor-mation.

To integrate telematics data from other providers, Schmitz Cargobull Telematics also provides a generic interface via which all trailer tele-matics data can be transmitted to and displayed within the Trailer-Connect portal 2.0.  jh

and unauthorised opening of the rear doors during transport is an important issue for many shippers and transport companies. Two new features assist the operators in monitoring and documenting door opening instances and, therefore, provide extra safety. With the TL3 key pad on the front side of the refrigerated semi-trailer, Schmitz Cargobull provides a third way of locking and unlocking the rear door in addition to the Trailer-Connect portal 2.0 and the Trailer-Connect “beSmart” app. The key pad is directly connected via a LIN

fleet managers and dispatchers. It informs all telematics portal users via smartphone about the current locations of their trailer fleet, downtimes and movement data. For this purpose, Schmitz Cargobull has transferred indi-vidual functions and views of the TrailerConnect portal 2.0 to the mobile application.

In particular, the “beUpToDate” app shows the position of all or individual trailers in real time via Google Maps. In addition, the app also provides information on the current status of the trailers such as tyre pressure, axle loads or temperature and cooling unit data. The integrated search and filter function ensures that users receive a clear overview.

The “beUpToDate” app enables the dispatcher or fleet manager to always stay up-to-date. All event messages concerning the trailers are displayed chronologically in

real time, with the current trailer position indicated. The message can also be confirmed via the app. This confirmation with the corre-sponding user (login name) indi-

cated is then visible in the message details area. This all adds up to a significant increase in transport security and vehicle availability for the company.  mb

The TL3 key pad is used to lock and unlock the

rear door.

Information about the cargo is becoming ever more important for shippers. They want to

know where the cargo is as well as its present condition. Tele-matics offers ever more ways of supplying this information along the logistics chain while also providing a means of influencing the individual transport steps.

With this in mind, Schmitz Cargobull Telematics is optimising the cold chain management in par-ticular. The avoidance of unplanned

The sun is a virtually inex-haustible energy source. The amount of energy that

it radiates every year amounts to more than 10,000 times the energy requirement of the humanity as a whole. A tiny part of this ener-gy is now also used by Schmitz Cargobull for its S.CU transport cooling unit.

In future, Schmitz Cargobull will offer a solar module for its self- developed S.CU transport cooling unit. The use of the small but sophisticated module has a quite special background. Transport cooling units must be ready for use at all times. Due to long idle times, especially in winter, or through additional loads such as a temper-

in Auckland. Whether smart trailer scheduling, sustained reduction in costs or reliable temperature man-agement – the contribution of tele-matics data to the future success of their companies was greatly appre-ciated. The positive response of the three companies was underlined by the fact that a total of 50 S.KO box semi-trailers were ordered, natural-ly all with the Schmitz Cargobull telematics system and, for the most part, with the self-developed S.CU cooling unit as well.  gw

ature recorder, discharging of the starter battery can occur. That has serious consequences. Should deep discharging of the battery occur, it will be damaged and have to be replaced. With the new S.CU solar panel, such bothersome and costly situations can be avoided. The starter battery of the S.CU trans-port cooling unit is charged with the help of the solar panel and, as a result, remains operational for a longer period of time.

The S.CU solar panel is posi-tioned and installed directly on the cooling unit by Schmitz Cargobull technicians. This has the advantage that the trailer’s overall height is not affected. Thanks to the tilt angle of the panel, soiling as well as snow and ice accumulation is minimised, which means that its efficiency is not affected even in winter. Another advantage is that

Specialists for both local and regional transport

In the area of retail logistics, the Pfenning Logistics Group supplies many grocery stores in Germany. The goods are transported in Schmitz Cargobull trailers. The decade-long partnership

is reflected in several innovations on the trailer.

Logistics is permanently occupied with finding the perfect vehicle for its deliveries. The medium-sized comprehensive provider, which is head-quartered in Heddesheim in Baden- Württemberg, has been so successful in this respect that the company is represented by 3,700 employees across a total of 90 sites in Germany. With a fleet of 800

All winners complied with the Schmitz Cargobull standards and im-pressed with their rapid and efficient work in optimum manufacturer quality. In addition to successfully completed breakdowns, modern and professional workshop equipment also played a decisive role for awarding the title. The Service Partners could also gain additional points with consistent training of their employees through Schmitz Cargobull experts. The 19 winners are as follows:

Surely a recordThe partnership between Pfenning Logistics and

Schmitz Cargobull has existed for more than 20 years. In this period, Schmitz Cargobull has

delivered a total of 1,250 vehicles to Pfenning Logistics. Only recently, the company again ordered 55 two-axle semi-trailers in the fresh food version with a lift axle, which will result in a total inventory of more than 250 force-steered trailers.

trucks and a total storage space of 330,000 square metres, the company now caters to customers not only in the retail trade but also in many other economic sectors.

As customer requirements also vary greatly in retail logistics, Pfenning Logistics has again ordered S.KO box semi-trailers of different lengths in the latest batch from Schmitz Cargobull. The fleet now contains 25 new force-steered, two-axle S.KO box semi-trailers with a length of 11 metres and 30 new S.KO box semi-trailers with a length of 13.6 metres. “In recent times, the loads for our customers have become increasingly heavy. The beverage portion is increasing. Here we sim-ply need a second axle,” explains René Günzel, Fleet Manager at Pfenning Logistics.

To consistently meet customer requirements, the partnership between the two companies in the implementation of new ideas has become a tradition. The best example of this is the joint devel-opment of a through-loading road train for temperature-controlled transport, 200 units of which Schmitz Cargobull has already delivered to Pfenning Logistics. The road train consists of a truck with the M.KO body and the Z.KO central axle trailer. What is special about this is an additional roller shutter at the rear wall of the trailer as well as an integrated, fold-out loading tail-lift. The load-ing and unloading processes were thus optimised and work safety and load safety increased.  jh

employees, customers and part-ners. Every day we strive to im-prove our service quality.” These services also comprise transport-ing hazardous goods, just-in-time and just-in- sequence transport, express deliveries and reverse logistics, together with partial and complete loads.

Integre Trans attaches particular value to sustainable logistics – at both the corporate level and also with regard to environmental protection. “Our fleet consists of new trailers because trailers with

technologically advanced equip-ment produce less CO2,” explains Žana Kel. “We see the use of low-emission transport systems as an opportunity – not only against climate change, but also for our own prosperity, our health and naturally for the efficiency of our business. Fewer emissions mean lower operating costs and also lower prices for our customers.”

With this strategy, Integre Trans is a success. 2018 was a very intensive and productive year for the company. In Lithuania, the

transport company was listed among the top 10 branch leaders last year. Žana Kel was awarded the prize of the Best Company Manager 2018 and Integre Trans became the winner of the Lithua-nian Export Prize 2018, organized by the Association of Lithuanian Chambers of Commerce, Indus-try and Crafts together with the Regional Chamber. The company also received the CerfoZert bonus certificate from Creditreform and is certified to ISO 9001 : 2015, ISO 14001 : 2015 and SQAS.  acw

To establish a local presence in Ireland’s fast-growing transport market, Schmitz

Cargobull has opened a new com-pany there. Trailer solutions and all technologies are provided to Irish customers directly on the island. The aim is the quick availability of trailers and services from financing to after-sales services. According to information supplied by the coun-try’s central statistical office, last year the total tonnage transported in Ireland rose by more than ten per cent. Schmitz Cargobull’s new national agency is located in Dublin and was opened in the pres-ence of Sales Director Boris Billich.

There was recognition for the investment from the Minister of State Damien English. He explicitly welcomed the fact that Schmitz Cargobull now directly serves the local transport companies in this growing sector. “First-class goods transport is still indispensable for

High honour for Schmitz Cargobull: there were words of praise from Damien English, one of the Ministers of State of the island nation, for the new company in Ireland.

The city located on the banks of the Río Huerva and Ebro rivers, is well-known not only for the baroque Basílica del Pilar cathedral but also for the high technological standard of its local industry. In ad-dition to household appliances and German passenger vehicles, the city has also been home to a Schmitz Cargobull trailer manufacturing fa-cility since 2010. Production began with the construction of S.CS cur-tainsider semi-trailers. At the end of the economic crisis in 2017, the location was expanded further and a new production plant was built, at which S.KO COOL box semi-

The new country office is headed by Paul Ó Ceallaigh, an experi-enced Schmitz Cargobull Sales Manager. The Managing Director of Schmitz Cargobull Ireland is Alan Hunt. trailers are now also manufactured. The plant is developing significantly – the workforce has increased from 74 in 2010 to now more than 200. So far this year, it has produced and sold 737 S.KO COOL units.

Local production has distinct ad-vantages for customers: instead of having to travel to Germany, they can collect their trailers directly in Spain. That reduces delivery times and creates proximity to the local direct contact partners. Schmitz Cargobull’s commitment to the region pays off as the demand continues to increase. There is also nothing standing in the way of further growth, as the site is designed for a capacity of 1,300 units per year.  dg
