A Letter from the Dean

In his book, The Lexus and the Olive Tree, Thomas Friedmantalks about globalization as the system that is replacing the Cold War asthe defining force in today’s society.

Once again, access to information is seen as playing a central rolein the ongoing social transformation. In fact, it is connections betweenpeople and information through the World Wide Web that are makingthe new global unity possible. Whereas the most frequently askedquestion in the Cold War was “How big is your missile? Friedman pointsout that the most frequently asked question today is “How fast is yourmodem?”

In the field of information and library science, we havebeen concerned with selecting, organizing and accessing thebest information for our users for centuries, so the power ofinformation is not a new idea for us. What is new is therelevance and ubiquity of our knowledge base in theinformation age and the potential that exists for growth andrapid change in our schools and in our profession.

At SILS, we are very aware of this potential and we aretaking advantage of it as we pursue initiatives such asincreasing the size of our programs, creating new jointmasters degrees with other professional schools suchas business and a developing a new undergraduatemajor in information science.

Another area of attention and growth at SILS isinternational programs. Our previous dean, BarbaraMoran accepted a position as director of internationalprograms in 1999. During her deanship, Barbara wasinstrumental in developing our summer schoolprogram with Oxford University and forgingrelationships with Charles University in Prague andthe Royal School of Library and Information Science in Copenhagen. Weintend to build on these relationships and create others as we increasingly“go global” with our thinking and our programs in the future.

One of these global initiatives is in the area of health scienceknowledge management. SILS received a grant from the NorthCarolina/Israel Partnership to hold a conference titled “Sharing ourStrengths: Cooperative International Distance Education in Health

Science Knowledge Management” on Feb. 19. A delegation of Israelifaculty members from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel AvivUniversity, the University of Haifa and Bar Ilan University joined us forseveral days to plan a joint curriculum in this specialized healthsciences area.

Our one-day public meeting included library and informationscience educators from across the nation and leaders in internationaldistance education from other parts of UNC-CH and Research TrianglePark. Carol Jenkins, director of the UNC-CH Health Sciences Library and

president-elect of the Medical Library Association, provided thekeynote presentation on the educational needs of healthscience information practitioners.

This initiative in health sciences has the potential to actas a model for the development of other specializations in theschool that will benefit SILS students as well as those aroundthe world.

We are currently offering our first distance-based courseon “Evidence-Based Medicine for the Medical Librarian”

taught by Connie Schardt and Julie Garrison fromDuke University and Julie Kochi from UCLA. Thecourse includes seven SILS students and 13information and health practitioners from aroundthe globe.

Students can take this course for SILS academiccredit or continuing education credit awarded by theMedical Library Association. Further informationabout a second offering of the course in June and July2001 can be found on the SILS website atwww.ils.unc.edu. Additional courses will be added inthe coming year and other schools will be invited to

participate in a consortium approach to curriculum development as theprogram evolves.

These are exciting times for information and library scienceresearch, education and service. I hope you enjoy this special interna-tional issue of the SILS newsletter and I hope that you will consideryourself part of not only our community at SILS but also part of theglobal community that we are building. ❑

with the campus life, the close relations toother students and to faculty members,” saysPh. D. student Christina Pattuelli, who arrivedat SILS from Italy in January. Each interna-tional student must adapt to the challenges ofa new way of living and learning, but in theprocess brings his or her own unique culturalcontributions to the school.

“International students provideenormous richness to the SILS community,”said Professor and Dean Emeritus Dr. BarbaraMoran. “It is hard to remain ethnocentricwhen you are able to study and learn withpeople from other countries.”

Different StrokesThe challenge of adjusting to student life

in a foreign country extends even to the basics– like trying to set up a phone line, whichmaster’s student Yukiko Sakai couldn’t do fortwo weeks because of language barriers, andlearning to handle the differences betweenJapanese and American computers. Master’sstudent Qhoshi Mngomezulu said that hedidn’t use computers at his off-campusevening study program in South Africa, andhad to learn to operate one before coming toSILS.

Foreign students often need help inlearning the ropes of living in this area, saidPh. D. student Lokman Meho, who receivedhis bachelor’s and master’s degrees at theAmerican University of Beirut in Lebanon,where he also worked in the library for eightyears. “It takes so much time to learn all ofthese things,” he said, “like where to buygroceries or where to rent an apartment.”

But the biggest challenge, for manystudents, is adapting to the differences inteaching and learning methods.

“In addition to English as the secondlanguage for me, the difference of lecture stylehere was challenging,” said Sakai, whoreceived her bachelors degree from KeioUniversity in Japan in 1983 and beganstudying at SILS in the fall of 1999. “In Japan,students are usually quiet and not supposed toask a lot of questions interrupting theinstructor’s talk. I had to encourage myself tobe aggressive and to speak out.”

Pattuelli, who came to SILS this semesterafter 15 years of library experience in Italy,

agreed. “The way of taking classes is verydifferent. We are not used to the kind ofassignments from session to session,” she said.“In classes [in Italy] we are not used toparticipating at all. I have to push myself.”Pattuelli, who graduated from the Universityof Bologna, took part in the pilot project forautomating Italy’s national library system.

In addition to encouraging them tospeak out in class, UNC offers internationalstudents more freedom to speak out outsidethe classroom.

“You talk what you think and believe inwithout fear of being punished,” said Meho.“In Lebanon, you take your professor’s beliefsinto consideration before your own.”

Comforts of HomeBeyond the challenges of the classroom,

the most difficult part of adjusting to life as aninternational student is often simply leavingbehind the comforts of family and home, likefavorite foods or sporting events.

“You have your family, your friends youhave been with for life,” Meho said. MostLebanese live with their parents until they getmarried, he said, so “When you get backhome your bed is ready, your food is ready.”

Moreover, many foreign students basetheir conception of the United States on whatthey see in the media, giving them a

somewhat distorted view of American life,Meho said.

“Our perception of the U.S. is based onwhat we see in movies: violence, drugs,killings, money,” he said. Sakai concurred,saying that “Japanese are told that Americancities are dangerous.” Both were pleased todiscover that for Chapel Hill, that depictionisn’t accurate.

“When you come here, you see thatpeople are nice and honest,” Meho said.“Chapel Hill is a peaceful town,” Sakaiagreed.

Finding CommunitySILS also provides more resources than

some international students find in theirhome countries, like the current books,databases and periodicals that Mngomezulusaid were not available to him in South Africa.

Meho said that UNC offers more than hefound in Lebanon as well. “There are moreresources and opportunities to develop andimprove here at a faster rate – academically,professionally, technologically,” he said.“There are so many services available; youhave great opportunities.”

UNC’s campus is also an attraction forinternational students, like Pattuelli, who areused to decentralized urban universities. “Thecampus is a great space for meeting, formingling with people, to give you a wide

feeling of community,” she said.The support and guidance that

international students find in SILS faculty andstaff also help develop that feeling ofcommunity, several students said.

SILS has double the number of faculty ofher university in Japan, and “many peopleworking for students,” said Sakai. “You have amuch more close relation with the professors.We are not used to communicating as muchas you do here. It gives you the feeling thatyou are followed step-by-step.”

But the challenges of adjusting to a newcountry extend to faculty as well. Even afterseven years in the United States, SILS researchfellow Noriko Hara still encounters somecultural difficulties.

“I do ethnographic work, and sometimespeople talk about, for example, a TVcommercial from a long time ago, and I haveno clue what they are talking about,” saidHara, who received her undergraduate degreefrom Yokohama National University in Japan.“That kind of cultural context is sometimesdifficult.”

Hara earned her master’s and doctoratedegrees at Indiana University, and herexperience in America allows her to shareadvice with international students at SILS. “Igive them some advice or we talk aboutcommon problems or something we foundinteresting,” she said. “It seems good for me,and good for them, too.”

Looking Ahead“Life is definitely easier back home than

here,” Meho said. “But challenges areinteresting. I became more mature by cominghere, and learned many things I would nothave learned.”

It’s the opportunity to learn that drawsstudents to SILS from around the world,despite the challenges of life in an unfamiliarplace. But those challenges can be overcomewith help from SILS staff and fellow students.

Although making friends here is moredifficult than in Lebanon, Meho said, he feelsvery integrated into UNC society and itsactivities. “I follow every single UNC team,and I feel very bad and sad when they lose,”he said. “And no single day passes without mereading the DTH.” He has become involved ina variety of organizations and even startedtennis and soccer teams for SILS faculty, staffand students.

Several of SILS’ international studentssaid they plan to teach after they graduate,

either in the United States or their homecountries. Sakai plans to return to KeioUniversity to resume work in the librariesthere, but she doesn’t want to lose her ties withthe United States.

“I want to be a kind of bridge personbetween people in the U.S. and Japan, andwork with international collaborations,” shesaid. She has previously worked as aninstructor with an organization that teachesU.S. researchers how to use Japanese data. “Iwanted to make a human network of students,faculty and resources,” she said.

The experience of learning at SILSallows international students to grow not justprofessionally and academically, butpersonally. “The crossover of cultures is agreat opportunity for an individual to improvenot only your knowledge of something, but tobecome a better person,” Pattuelli said. “Thisis my goal, to become a more broad-mindedperson.”

International students’ presence at SILSallows their American peers and instructors togrow as well. “Last semester in my humanresources management class, almost half ofthe students were international. Because theenrollment was so diverse, we were able todiscuss cross-cultural differences in howpeople are managed,” Moran said. “It did nottake long for it to become apparent that thethings we in the U.S. had always taken forgranted in the workplace were not trueworldwide. We all learned a great deal fromone another, and as a result of the interactionamong the students this was one of the bestclasses I ever taught.” ❑

A World of PossibilitiesIt has become a cliché to say that that

we live in a global environment, but it is acliché that is true. Everyone at SILS has beenaffected by this new “one world” attitude. Asdirector of international affairs at the school,I’ve seen the number of internationalopportunities for faculty members andstudents at SILS increase each year, greatlyexpanding our knowledge and broadeningour perspectives.

SILS has created individual formalstudy-abroad agreements with two schools:the Royal School of Library and InformationScience in Copenhagen, Denmark and theFaculty of Information Studies, CharlesUniversity, Prague, Czech Republic. Inaddition, UNC-Chapel Hill has formaluniversity ties with approximately 75international schools and universities whereSILS students can spend a semester, or year,and study abroad while paying UNC tuition.A few SILS students have completed theirfield experiences in an international setting,for example, at the American School in Paris,in Peru and at the Bodleian Library inOxford, England.

Also each year, SILS welcomes a largenumber of international students to both its master’s and Ph.D.programs. In the past few years, we have drawn students from allover the world including Australia, China, the Czech Republic,Denmark, England, Germany, Italy, India, Korea, New Zealand,Russia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Taiwan and Tanzania. Thesestudents bring fresh perspectives to SILS classes and enrich thelearning experience for everyone.

SILS plays host to a large number of international visitorseach year. Some of these visitors spend a semester with us; othersare here for much briefer periods of time. Through a Title VI grant,we have been able to bring three faculty members from EasternEurope for semester-long visits, and the recent renewal of thatgrant ensures that this program will continue for another threeyears.

We have had several faculty members supported by Fulbrightfellowships visit us from India and faculty members from the RoyalSchool of Library and Information Science, Hebrew University andthe University of Sheffield have taught courses at SILS. Othervisiting scholars have come for the semester from Japan, GreatBritain and Korea. In addition, each year we have a large numberof international visitors from all parts of the world. Usually, thesevisitors give lectures so that SILS and the UNC community canbenefit from their experiences.

As the world becomes more globalized, so must our curricu-

lum and faculty. Global aspects are incorpo-rated in many of our classes, and we offer aspecial course, International and Cross-Cultural Perspectives for InformationManagement, that compares institutions,processes and trends in the globalization ofinformation management.

SILS faculty members regularly travelabroad as Fulbright scholars, as visitingscholars or speakers at foreign universitiesand organizations and as participants ininternational conferences.

And of course, for the 11th consecu-tive year, SILS is co-sponsoring its popularOxford summer seminar. This two-weeksummer program takes students andpracticing librarians to England to study thepast, present and future of Britishlibrarianship. One SILS faculty member eachyear serves as academic advisor on the trip, arole to be filled this year by Dr. David Carr.

In addition, for the past twosummers, faculty and students from SILShave worked with the World LibraryPartnership and participated in the trainingthat sent dozens of librarians to Zimbabweand South Africa to work with rural librarydevelopment.

All of us at SILS continue to look for ways to increase our globalperspectives. We recently hosted a joint SILS-Israeli conference oncooperative international distance education in health scienceknowledge management. The program was funded by the NorthCarolina/Israel Partnership. Later this year, SILS will be working withCharles University in Prague to set up a new summer program,similar to the Oxford seminar. This new course will be offered for thefirst time in June 2002.

A number of us from the school have recently participated inwriting a large grant that would send SILS faculty to Moscow andIrkutsk and bring faculty from those locations to SILS. So, althoughour hearts remain in Chapel Hill, we continue to look to ourcolleagues and sister institutions from across the world to broadenour perspectives.

Worldwide, librarians and information professionals have a lotto teach each other. We hope that SILS will continue to be a leader inthe opportunities we offer our students and faculty (and graduatesthrough the summer seminars) to expand their world views andbecome global citizens. ❑

* * *Moran, former dean of the school, is a professor at SILS. She

served as academic advisor for the school’s Oxford seminar in1994 and 1996. She currently serves as the school’s director ofinternational affairs.

SILS’ annual Oxford seminar is just one ex-ample of SILS’ global reach. The programsends two dozen students and professionalsto England each year for two weeks of studyat Oxford University and the Bodleian Li-brary. A similar seminar in the Czech Repub-lic is currently in the planning stages.

Although we spell the name of his home city the wrong way (it’sKøbenhavn, not Copenhagen, he insists), Danish exchange studentChristian Nyhus Andreasen still has good things to say about the “crazyAmericans” he encountered in his semester at SILS.

“You rule!” said Andreasen who, along with Christina Aa, spent thefall semester at SILS on an exchange program with the Biblioteksskole,Denmark’s Royal School of Library and Information Science.

University life at UNC is quite different from that in Denmark,Andreasen said. “The largest difference is that at UNC, the faculty have amuch larger surplus when it comes to involving themselves with thestudents’ work. The staff at UNC seemed to have more ‘air’ – not sopressed by understaffing as in Denmark,” he said. “In Denmark theprofessors are running alongside the students, looking like they havealready missed 20 appointments before noon.”

Even the basic purpose of a university education is different here,Andreasen said. “The teaching is much more focused on future jobsthan the Danish, which is more theoretically and philosophicallyfocused.”

During his stay, Andreasen took classes in Internet applications,human resources management and metadata. He and Aa also developeda Web site about the Denmark exchange program (www.ils.unc.edu/exchange).

His relationships with SILS professors and students were excellent,Andreasen said. “We met both personally and professionally on manylevels. [It was] cool that people were able to put down their work and gofor a cup of coffee once in a while.”

He also appreciated the opportunity to meet students from otherareas of study. “That you are not only meeting people from your ownfield of study is a very large improvement in comparison to Denmarkwhere the different parts of the university are more separated,” he said.

Andreasen said he enjoyed UNC sports and the beauty of NorthCampus, and he even got a taste of dorm life while staying inCarmichael Residence Hall. “[It was] quite an interesting thing to shareroom with someone seven years younger than you,” he said.

Andreasen hopes to make a return visit to the university sometimesoon, and extends a reciprocal invitation to his SILS peers. “If you areever in Denmark, stop by for a tour of our wonderful capital,” he said.

Andreasen Enjoys Semester With ‘Crazy Americans’

SILS Hosts ConferenceConnecting US, Israel

On Feb. 19, SILS and the North Carolina/Israel Partnership(NCIP) hosted a conference titled “Sharing Our Strengths” intendedto develop an international collaborative distance educationcertificate program in health sciences knowledge management.

The conference, held at the Carolina Club, was funded by agrant from the NCIP and organized by the NCIP planning group. Thegroup is composed of five SILS faculty members and representatives offour leading Israeli universities: the Hebrew University of Jerusalem,Bar Ilan University, Tel Aviv University and the University of Haifa.

Panels included “Distance Education for Health ScienceInformation Specialists,” moderated by Professor and Dean EmeritaBarbara Moran; “International and Interdisciplinary Collaboration,”moderated by Professor Barbara Wildemuth; and “Success Stories forWeb-Basted Health Science Educational Programs,” moderated byAssociate Professor Claudia Gollop. ❑

I have only one word of advice to any student considering one ofthe SILS exchange programs – GO!

I spent the fall semester in Prague at Charles University, where SILShas an exchange with the Institute of Information Studies andLibrarianship. Studying abroad gave me the opportunity to understand adifferent corner of the world, meet people from many countries andenrich my educational experience by learning about librarianship froma different perspective.

While there, I took three courses and worked closely with twodifferent professors. I completed an independent study with RichardPapik titled “Competitive Intelligence via Online Databases,” whichfocused on CI resources for Central and Eastern Europe. I also attendedhis weekly online retrieval course, which gave me the experience ofbeing in a Czech university classroom and interacting with Czechstudents.

Together with Dr. Stanley Kalkus I undertook a survey of speciallibraries in the the Czech Republic. We visited a variety of libraries,including the Library of the Czech Parliament; the library of CERGE-EI,a joint academic program between the University of Pittsburgh andCharles University; the International Baptist Theological Seminary; thePatent Library of the Czech Republic; and the Libri Prohibiti, a librarythat collects Czech samizdat, which are underground writings from thecommunist era.

My visit to the Libri Prohibiti encouraged further research intoCzech samizdat and I used thisas the topic for my master’spaper. Completing my paperwhile living abroad proved to bequite a challenge, but allproblems were resolved with thehelp of my advisor, Dr. DavidCarr; SILS Student Servicesmanager Lucia Zonn; andfellow SILS student AnnaCleveland.

Dr. Carr and I corre-sponded solely via e-mail,

swapping ideas and sending revisions of the paper as attachments. Luciawas a great help not only with the nuts and bolts of the paper, but shealso helped out at the beginning of the semester when I completed mycomprehensive exams via e-mail from Prague. The biggest obstacle toovercome turned out to be the most basic one – paper! As any SILSalumnus knows, the paper for printing must meet certain size andweight requirements. With the writing and research aspects of my paperalmost complete, I realized that European paper standards are differentfrom those in the United States. After unsuccessfully scouring stationeryshops and even calling the U.S. Embassy, I resolved the problem by e-

Prague is simply an amazing place to live and study. While there, Ilived in a dormitory for international students and came away with newfriends from all over the world. In addition to my other classes, Iparticipated in a beginning Czech language course. Because Prague is apopular tourist destination, most people in stores and restaraunts speakEnglish, but it is nice to be to say “Jedno pivo, prosim” and be under-stood.

I arrived in Prague in early October, just after the IMF/World Bankprotests, and left a few days before Christmas. Christmas is cause formajor celebration in the city, and features markets, concerts and otherfestivities. In between, I visited too many museums to count, saw thenumerous sites of Prague, discovered the finer points of Czech cuisine(and the even finer points of Czech beer, the best in the world) andtravelled to other towns near Prague such as Kutna Hora, Pilzen andKlatovy. I was fortunate that Czech native Pavla Skarlantova and I got toknow each other while she was studying at SILS last year, and she provedto be a wonderful tour guide and friend.

I even discovered a little bit of home while in Prague. I am a bigfan of bluegrass music and I found that it is quite popular in the CzechRepublic, with numerous bands picking and grinning in and aroundPrague.

Without exception, my experience in Prague was an excellent one.The professors I worked with made my educational pursuits challeng-ing, interesting and most enjoyable. The city of Prague provided mewith more extracurricular activities than I could have imagined. But themost valuable and rewarding experience was simply removing myselffrom familiar and comfortable surroundings and going to a differentplace to live and study.

The faculty at the Institute in Prague are excellent hosts and theyare eager to have more SILS students studying with them. I encourageanyone interested in this unique experience to contact Dr. BarbaraMoran for more information about opportunites in Prague. ❑

From Folk Dancing to Fiddling,Parkhurst is a Master of the Arts

SILS master’s student Naomi Parkhursthas a love for all things traditional, one thatextends from dancing to quilting to fiddling.

“I like a lot of traditional arts in oneform or another,” she said. Her interest has ledher to establish a local team of folk dancers,as well as a comprehensive Web site aboutquilt patterns.

Introduced to folk dancing by ababysitter who took her to an event when shewas 8 years old, Parkhurst has been dancingever since. In college, she discoveredmorris dancing, a form of Englishcountry dancing that emphasizesperformance at events called ales.Morris dancers, with costumes oftenadorned in buttons, ribbons or rags,execute dances with names like “OldWoman Tossed Up” and “DonkeyRiding.”

There wasn’t a morris team inthis area when Parkhurst moved here fiveyears ago. But there’s a wide network ofcommunication among morris dancers, shesaid. So Parkhurst and her boyfriend, whoalso dances, used the morris dancing e-maildiscussion list to seek out local aficionados.“There was enough critical mass to start agroup,” she said.

While morris dancing has been practicedfor centuries, its origins are debated,Parkhurst said. Her team, Blue Moon Morris,dances a style of morris called Cotswold. Theeight-person group performs at two or threeevents a year, including the annual Festivalfor the Eno. They plan to dance at dawn onMay Day in conjunction with morris groupsaround the world. And, after the group’snamesake, it dances every blue moon.

Parkhurst hopes to someday explore herhobby’s native home on SILS’ annual Oxford

seminar. That area is “a hotbed for morris,”she said.

But Parkhurst’s enthusiasm for thetraditional arts extends beyond dancing. Shealso plays the fiddle and enjoys making quilts.“I picked up quilting in college because it’s agood way to use up all the scraps I couldn’tbear to throw out,” she said.

Her interest has evolved into a complexWeb site (www.ils.unc.edu/~parkn/quilt) thatcategorizes and cross-references hundreds ofquilt block patterns.

Parkhurst said she startedcreating graphics of quilt blocks inorder to arrange quilt layouts on thecomputer. “By the time I got up tohaving four or five hundred, Irealized that I needed to organizethem somehow,” she said. “And aslong as I was going to do thatanyway, I might as well put it up onthe Web.”

“What interests me is the cross-referencing,” Parkhurst said. The sitecategorizes quilt blocks alphabetically,thematically and visually, and links eachblock to its various categories. Parkhurst saidshe has begun enhancing the site with skillslike Java script that she learned in her SILSclasses. “I actually spend a lot more time onthe Web site these days than I do quilting,”she said.

The site has attracted quilters fromaround the world; Parkhurst has receivedfeedback from as far away as France andSouth America. She even heard from aquilting SILS alumna, and people are startingto link to the site, she said.

From finding morris dancers via e-mailto assisting quilters worldwide with her Website, Parkhurst has brought her love of thetraditional into the technological age. ❑

Face to FaceStudents, EmployersCome TogetherAt Annual Job Fair

On Wednesday, Feb. 14, studentsand employers had their annualopportunity to meet each other at theInformation and Library Science CareerFair, co-sponsored by SILS and UniversityCareer Services.

Almost 200 students and 25organizations attended the fair, held inthe Great Hall of the Student Union.According to Melanie Sinche, assistantdirector of University Career Services, theevent exceeded expectations.

“In terms of comparison to pastyears, I consider this year’s fair to havebeen one of our most successful,” shesaid. “Many of the employers in attendancecommented on the talent represented by theSILS students they met.”

Sinche said students also werepleased with the employers in attendance,and that there was a good balancebetween organizations interested ininformation and library science students.

Participating organizationsincluded academic libraries fromVirginia, Maryland and North Carolina;public libraries; private corporationsincluding IBM, Bloomberg and Dialog;and the Central Intelligence Agency.

Further evidence of the event’s successoccured a few days later, Sinche said, whenthe CIA notified her that the agency hadextended offers to seven SILS students.” ❑

“Librarian by day, casino dealer by night” – that’s the double life of master’s studentBecky Imamoto, who dealt blackjack in a Nevada casino before arriving at SILS in August.

Imamoto took a summer job at Harvey’s Resort and Casino in South Lake Tahoe aftergraduating from the University of California-Davis in June 1999. Her summer job, however,turned into a yearlong adventure when she stayed on at the casino until leaving to attendSILS.

Starting out with no dealing experience, Imamoto went through a two-week trainingcourse and then hit the blackjack table. “Atfirst I was extremely nervous. At most timesyou have at least $20,000 in front of you,” shesaid. “However, it is a really simple, basic job,so you don’t need much previous experience.”

Although experience isn’t necessary,Imamoto said patience and customer serviceskills come in handy. She encountered someunusual characters on her 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.shift, including a man who began to bang hishead against a wall when he lost to her.

“I also met many very, very superstitious people who would bring charms to the table oronly play if the first card showing was a four or something,” she said. Imamoto said shewasn’t allowed to deal at the high-stakes tables, so most of her patrons weren’t seriousgamblers but weekend leisure travelers.

Although she returned to Harvey’s to work over the holiday break, Imamoto doesn’t haveplans to make dealing a lifetime career. “I just wanted to have some life experiences andgreat stories before I went to graduate school,” she said.

None of her friends at the casino could believe that she was going to be a librarian,Imamoto said. But she thinks she can use some of the customer service skills she learneddealing blackjack in her library career. “Hopefully,” she said, “library patrons won’t be asirate about losing money and consuming large quantities of alcohol.” ❑

School�s Unique Partnership With EPA anhere are some things you can learn in aspecial library with more than 150,000documents that you just can’t learn in theT

classroom. That’s why SILS’ unique partnership with theEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides aninvaluable opportunity for the school’s students.

The more-than-25-year partnership between SILSand the EPA allows master’s students to intern at the EPAand National Institute of Environmental Health Science(NIEHS) libraries in Research Triangle Park. Theinterns play an important role in the agencies’functions, providing information services to approxi-mately 2,000 researchers.

“Whenever someone’s starting a new project andthey need information, they come to us,” notes second-year SILS student Katherine “K.T.” Vaughan. “You don’tget that training anywhere else.”

The SILS-EPA internship program began in May1975 when a hiring freeze required the EPA to look foralternative means of staffing its research library. FormerSILS Dean Edward Holley orchestrated the program afterbeing approached by local federal employees for help.The NIEHS, one of 25 institutes and centers of the National Institutes of Health,hires interns through the SILS-EPA partnership on an inter-agency agreementthat began in 1985. In 1999, SILS was awarded the contract to continueadministering the EPA/NIEHS programs for another five years.

The partnership gives students the opportunity to apply what they’relearning in class, to gain professional-level experience and to acquire a betterunderstanding of what they want to do in the future. The contract provides forbetween eight and 18 interns annually; this semester, eight SILS students intern atthe EPA library and three work at the NIEHS.

SILS student Endrina Tay is just one of the many interns who have been able tobenefit from SILS’ partnership with the EPA and NIEHS libraries.

rotating through as many as three different library departments. At the EPAlibrary, rotations include reference, interlibrary loan, cataloging, online searchingand branch library management.

“It’s nice to be able to perform all the functions and watch them interact,”says EPA intern Sambhavi Cheemalapati, current president of the SILS studentassociation (ILSSA). NIEHS interns rotate through the serials, cataloging andreference areas.

Over the years, more than 280 students have participated in the program. Inaddition to interns, SILS also contracts with the EPA to provide its library with afive-person permanent staff. Library director and SILSgraduate Deborah Balsamo (MSLS ’97) has workedthere since 1998.

The internship provides invaluable real-lifeexperience, she says. “It gives students a chance topractice what they learn about in the classroom. Itprovides a unique opportunity for our students,learning a whole new practical experience.”

The EPA library in RTP is the second largest of 24EPA libraries across the country, and the only onestaffed by a school of information and library science.Research at the EPA focuses on air pollution and theagency’s library collection includes a wide range ofscientific and government materials, as well as businessand computer information.

The NIEHS library provides support toinvestigators conducting research on the biologicaland medical roles of environmental factors inhuman disease.

and will be located directly across a lake from the NIEHScampus.

Each year, the EPA library receives more than 17,000requests for photocopies or loans and answers more than3,400 reference inquiries. “We get some of the strangestquestions,” notes EPA intern Endrina Tay, who works inthe reference rotation. Such questions can take anywherefrom two minutes to two days to answer, adds AssistantLibrary Director Claire Locke.

But when the answer finally is found, EPA andNIEHS employees are often impressed with the interns’abilities. “Researchers are always saying, ‘How did you dothat? How did you find that?’” says Tay.

While the libraries focus on scientific issues, theinterns stress that a background in science isn’t necessaryto succeed in the program. “I have a background inpainting and I haven’t taken science since 10th grade, soI was nervous,” says EPA intern Rebecca Lee, who worksindependently at the Office of Air Quality Planning andStandards branch library in Durham. “But it’s moreimportant how you use the tools, not what’s in them. Youlearn how to apply skills you learned in class.”

Corey Harper, an NIEHS intern, agrees: “You don’thave to know everything to start with, you just have to be

good at finding the answer.”The greatest benefit of the internship program, all the interns agree, is the

hands-on experience it provides. If not for the interns, “there would have to beprofessional librarians to do this work,” notes Balsamo.

“I think it’s impossible to really teach the complexities of real life,” addsHarper. “The practical experience of doing this in a live environment is immea-surably valuable.”

“They push you to do professional-level work,” says Vaughan. Tay agrees.“They train you to do the job and you do it,” she notes.“You learn how to tackle problems on your ownfirst.” But, she says, the libraries’ professionalstaffs also offer plenty of mentoring andencouragement.

Past interns have assumed majorresponsibilities in government agencies, businessand industrial libraries, research libraries andinformation technology corporations such asNortel, OVID, ISI and others. Many of theTriangle area’s special and corporate librariesemploy at least one former intern, as do thelibraries at Duke, N.C. State and UNC.

Dav Robertson, a member of the first classof EPA interns, has served as director of theNIEHS library since 1977. He got the job, herecalls, largely due to having had experienceworking at the EPA. “I was able to start off herealready knowing the basics of things likeinterlibrary loan and serials,” he says. “I was onmy feet when I came to work here.”

Robertson was responsible for incorporating the NIEHS library into the EPAinternship program in 1985, and he has hired three former interns onto thelibrary’s professional staff. Over 25 years, Robertson says, the program’s goal hasremained the same: “to give students the kind of experience they need to besuccessful in libraries.”

But the program doesn’t just benefit the students; the interns contributesomething to the libraries they work in as well. “The interns bring fresh ideasand new developments that are on the horizon in the field,” says Balsamo.“While it’s challenging to always have new people, you get a fresh perspective allthe time.” ❑

What’s Happening with Faculty, Staff

Associate Professor Diane H.Sonnenwald and Professor BarbaraWildemuth were recently presented a specialaward by the Association for Library andInformation Science Education (ALISE).

Sonnenwald and Wildemuth received theassociation’s Methodology Award for theirpaper, “Investigating Information SeekingBehavior Using the Concept of InformationHorizons.” This is the fifth year of the award and the first time a UNC faculty member haswon the award. An honorarium accompanied the award, created to recognize papers thataddress a research methodology issue and provide some examples of the use of that method-ology.

Sonnenwald described the new method at ALISE’s recent annual conference inWashington, D.C. Based on Sonnenwald’s earlier theoretical work on information horizons,the method asks study participants to draw a map of the people and resources that they accesswhen seeking information. These maps are then analyzed to discover patterns of use, andpotential needs for new information systems and collaboration among resources.

“This is a major contribution to library and information science theory,” noted SILSDean Joanne Gard Marshall. “And it is another example of members of our faculty beingrecognized for being at the forefront of developments in their fields.”

Wildemuth Adds to Honors Received in 2000

Barbara Wildemuth

Dr. Barbara M. Wildemuth, a professor at SILS since 1988, was named OutstandingInformation Science Teacher by the American Society for Information Science (ASIS). Shereceived her award in November at the society’s annual conference in Chicago.

Established in 1980, the Outstanding Information Science Teacher award is co-sponsored by ASIS and the Institute for Scientific Information. The award recognizesdemonstrated sustained excellence in teaching information science. While professionalactivities and research contributions may serve as support for a nominee, the awardspecifically recognizes the recipient as a distinguished teacher of information science.

Wildemuth, named SILS’ Teacher of the Year for 1999-2000, is the second facultymember at the school to receive the ASIS teaching award. Associate Professor Dr. StephanieHaas won the award in 1996.

“Barbara is an outstanding teacher and citizen of the school. We are very fortunate tohave her with us at SILS,” noted Dr. Joanne Gard Marshall, dean of the School of Informationand Library Science. “She is someone who is able to balance her commitments to research,teaching and service to the profession and who serves as a wonderful role model for bothjunior and senior faculty.”

Wildemuth received her bachelor’s degree in music education at North Central Collegein Illinois and her master of library science degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana. Shealso earned a master of education degree at Rutgers University and a Ph.D. in informationstudies at Drexel University. ❑

Jay Aikat stepped down as SILS’ directorof information technology in January. Aikat,who joined the SILS staff in January 1999, isstaying at Carolina to pursue her master’sdegree in computer science. AssociateProfessor Dr. David Carr is chairing thecommittee charged with selecting Aikat’sreplacement.

Aikat, who previously served as computersystems administrator for UNC’s School ofJournalism and Mass Communication, earnedher bachelor’s degree at the Birla Institute ofTechnology in India, and her master’s degreeat Ohio University.

SILS Director of Communications DavidMacDonald married Marlyse Hickman onMarch 10 at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill.MacDonald received his bachelor’s degree atthe College of William & Mary and hisgraduate degree in journalism/publicrelations at UNC-Chapel Hill. Hickman, areference librarian at the Duke UniversityMedical Center Library, earned her bachelor’sdegree at the University of Virginia and her

Assistant Professor Bert Dempsey begana one-year leave from SILS on Jan. 1 to pursuean opportunity with a startup softwarecompany in Research Triangle Park. Thecompany, RateIntegration(www.rateintegration.com), builds softwarecomponents to support the network manage-ment and billing challenges that next-generation bundles of Internet services willrequire. Dempsey will provide leadership inbuilding technical expertise and presence insome of the newest areas of the Internet space,such as wireless Internet and an XML-basedstandards effort (IPDR.org).

Dempsey’s article “Performance Analysis of aScaleable Design for Replicating File Collectionsin Wide-Area Networks” appeared in the July2000 issue of the Journal of Network andComputer Applications (Vol. 23, No. 3, p. 201).

Associate Professor Dr. Claudia Golloprecently attended three different conferences inWashington, D.C.: ■ “The Public Library and ConsumerHealth: Meeting Community Needs ThroughResource Identification and Collaboration,” aconference sponsored by the Public LibraryAssociation (PLA), the National Library ofMedicine (NLM) and the Medical LibraryAssociation (MLA), Jan. 10-11; ■ “Reconsidering Library and InformationScience Education,” annualconference of the Association for Library andInformation Science Education(ALISE), Jan. 9-12; and ■ The ALA Midwinter Meeting, Jan. 12-17.

In November, Assistant Professor Dr. JaneGreenberg was invited to present a paper atthe Library of Congress BicentennialConference on Bibliographic Control in theNew Millennium. Jane’s paper compared fiveWeb resource access experiments thatemployed bibliographic control methods. Jane and Larry Alford, deputylibrarian at UNC, shared their experiences ofthe LC Conference with professional librariansand members of the SILS community inDecember during a brown-bag lunch.

In December, Greenberg led a brown-bag

lunch on metadata for the ScholarlyCommunication Working Group Program,and in late November she gave a metadataworkshop at the Broward County PublicLibrary in Florida.

Greenberg has two forthcoming publica-tions in the Journal of the American Societyfor Information Science — one onautomatic query expansion via lexical-semantic relationships and the other onoptimal query expansion processing methodswith semantically encoded structured thesauriterminology.

It was recently announced at the SLA Mid-Winter Meeting that SILS Dean Dr. Joanne

SILS alumna and former director of instructional technology Kristin Chaffin (MSIS ’96)has rejoined the school as a fixed-term faculty member with a one-year appointment.

Chaffin said she’s happy to be back at SILS in yet another capacity. “I’ve worked herebefore, in addition to being a student, so I’ve got a lot of different perspectives,” she said.“One of the reasons I wanted to come back here is the school is areally special place.”

What makes SILS special are its people, Chaffin said. They sharegoals, “with respect to sharing information and learning andteaching, that fit in very well with my personal values. I’m verypleased to be here,” she said.

Chaffin left SILS in December 1998 for a systems and databaseadministration position with TManage, a company that implementsand manages telecommuting programs. Now she juggles theacademic and corporate environments, teaching Data Communications (INLS 80) and WebDatabases (INLS 259) while continuing to work part time for TManage.

It makes for a busy schedule, Chaffin said. “Things come up at TManage that I need totake care of, and students need questions answered at all hours of the day.”

But she doesn’t mind having the best of both worlds. “There were things that I wantedto do with teaching, but at the same time I wanted to maintain my ties with the corporateworld,” Chaffin said. “I really wanted to balance my interests.”

Chaffin resides in Durham. In her spare time she enjoys pursuing glass fusing, an art formthat works with warm glass. And, “Like everyone here, I really enjoy reading,” she said. ❑

Gard Marshall has been named a fellow ofthe Special Libraries Association. The honorcelebrates an individual who is “at or near themid-point of an active professional career ...in recognition of their leadership in the fieldof special librarianship and for theiroutstanding contributions and expected futureservice to the association.” This designationwill be formally conferred at the SLA’s AnnualConference in June in San Antonio.

Professor and Dean Emeritus Dr.Barbara Moran has an article in theJanuary 2001 (Vol. 57, No. 1, p. 100-114) issueof the Journal of Documentation. The title ofthe article is “Restructuring the UniversityLibrary: a North American Perspective.”

■ With Dr. Evelyn Daniel, Dr. Moran led agroup from SILS in securing a grant from theNorth Carolina-Israel Scientific ResearchProgram. “Sharing our Strengths: CooperativeInternational Distance Education in HealthSciences Knowledge Management.”

■ Dr. Moran was also part of panel in aprogram sponsored by the Academic AffairsLibrary’s Staff Development Committee. Thetopic of the program was mentoring.

■ She was selected as a Thomas P. JohnsonDistinguished Visiting Scholar at RollinsCollege, Winter Park, Fla., in November, whereshe delivered a symposium on “Continuityand Change: The Integration of the Universityof Oxford’s Libraries.”

Assistant Professor Dr. Brian Sturm hascompleted his book, The Storyteller’sSourcebook, 1983-1999: A Motif, Title,Subject and Geographic/Ethnic Index toFolklore Collections for Children(Farmington Hills, Mich.: Gale Group, 2001).The book, co-authored with Margaret ReadMacDonald, was published in late February.

Dr. Diane H. Sonnenwald, a facultymember at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School ofInformation and Library Science (SILS) since1995, has been promoted to associateprofessor with tenure.

Sonnenwald recently won the Associationfor Library and Information ScienceEducation’s (ALISE) 2001 Methodology PaperAward with SILS Professor Dr. BarbaraWildemuth (see page10). Sonnenwald hasalso received a UNCJunior FacultyResearch Award.

Before joiningSILS, Sonnenwaldworked at Bell Labsand Bell Communica-tions Research, andwas a National Science Foundation (NSF) andNATO postdoctoral fellow at Risø DanishNational Laboratories in Roskilde, Denmark.She earned her Ph.D. in communication,information and library studies at RutgersUniversity, received her master’s in computerscience from Montclair State University in NewJersey, and her bachelor’s degree in math-ematics and German from MuhlenbergCollege in Allentown, Pa.

“Diane’s research efforts, especially inthe area of collaboration, are exemplary,”noted SILS Dean Joanne Gard Marshall. “Shehas shown a great ability to forge partnershipsinside and outside the university. Herpromotion is indeed very well deserved.”

Sonnenwald is currently involved inprojects such as the NSF’s Science andTechnology Center for EnvironmentallyResponsible Solvents and Processes where sheis the coordinator of collaborative efforts. Sheis also collaborating with computer scientists,designing and evaluating a collaborativevirtual reality environment for thenanoManipulator, an improved, naturalinterface to scanned-probe microscopes. ❑

Betty McCain, UNC graduate andimmediate past secretary of North Carolina’sDepartment of Cultural Resources, will be thefeatured speaker at SILS’ spring commence-ment exercises on May 20.

McCain, recently replaced by Gov. MikeEasley appointee Lisbeth “Libba” Evans,graduated from UNC-CH with a music degree in1952. She was appointed to the secretary’sposition in 1993 by then-Gov. Jim Hunt.

The Office of the Secretary performsplanning/policy development activities for thedepartment and assures that departmentalprograms serve the people of North Carolina.It also oversees grants appropriated by the N.C.General Assembly. The department is home tosuch organizations as the N.C. Arts Council,the N.C. Museum of Art and the N.C.Symphony — where McCain has beencredited with being an active, creative andaggressive advocate for the arts.

A board member for the N.C. Institute ofMedicine and the N.C. Center for PublicTelevision, McCain is co-chair of the WilliamC. Friday Endowed Professorship Committee atthe UNC-CH School of Education. She servedfour terms on the UNC Board of Governors,which included stints as secretary of itsgovernance committee and chair of its budgetand finance committee.

Named one of the most powerful womenin the Triangle in 1996 by the TriangleBusiness Journal, McCain served aschairman of the N.C. Democratic Party from1976 to 1979, and helped direct Gov. James B.Hunt’s gubernatorial campaigns in 1976 and1980 and his U.S. Senate campaign in 1984.She received the Distinguished Service Medalfrom the UNC General Alumni Association in1993. She holds a master’s degree in musicfrom Columbia University. ❑

The students in Dr. Barbara Moran’sfall semester “Management of InformationAgencies” class thought their professorwould help them learn the ropes. They justdidn’t expect the literal meaning of thephrase.

But that’s exactly what they, andMoran, got in October when they acceptedthe challenge of the ropes course at theCarolina Adventures Outdoor EducationCenter.

The course, which features a series ofmental and physical challenges that thegroup must overcome, fit right in with herclass’s goals and objectives, Moran said.

“In INLS 131, as in many SILS classes,we do a great deal of work as teams. Theropes course gave us a wonderful chance tolearn to work better as a group. It allowedus to test our problem-solving, decision-making, communication and leadershipskills.”

Through fun games and trust-building activities, Moran and her studentsmoved through a progression of events thatpromoted continued bonding andrecognition of the group’s strengths andweaknesses. The course featured a numberof pole and tree elements, and what is

Let�s Go Tar Heels! ... Students, faculty and alumni root on the Lady Tar Heels at Carmichael Auditorium on Sunday, Feb. 18. After a pre-game brunchat Manning Hall, the SILS group watched Carolina lose a close one to the Seminoles of Florida State 80-78 in overtime. The outing, organized this year by theInformation and Library Science Student Association (ILSSA), has become an annual event at the school.

Most students agreed afterward that their“field trip” was well worth the effort.

“I found the ropes course to be helpful inseveral ways,” noted Stacey Yusko. “It forcedus to step out of our normal, comfortablepositions and play roles. It helped us learneach others names, personality quirks andbrought us closer together as a class.

“I think it aided subsequent in-classdiscussions because a barrier had beenremoved. It was not as difficult to join in whenyou had already spent time with these people

and they knew who you are.”Jenny Parsons agreed. “The group work

initiated later in the semester was positivelyaffected by the lessons learned andcamaraderie developed during our day atthe course.”

“The experience,” Parsons noted, “was agreat addition to the ‘traditional’ SILS

management curriculum.”Funding for this outdoor team-building

experience was provided by a grant from theOffice of Distinguished Scholarships andIntellectual Life at the Johnston Center forUndergraduate Excellence at UNC-CH.Moran said she’d like to see the ropescourse become a permanent part of hercourse syllabus.

“I think all of us thought it was not onlyvery useful but a great deal of fun,” Moransaid. “I hope to be able to find the funding sothat future management classes can have thesame experience.

AlumniNewsBenefits of Service Far Outweigh Any Negatives

As my term of office as president of the Alumni Associa-tion Executive Board winds down, I have mixed feelings.

I confess, crass as it may seem, that I will be sorry to giveup the many perks of the job. It is exciting to work with such awonderful board and such a fantastic SILS staff. I have lovedbeing included in development efforts (such as the SILS Boardof Visitors meetings and the GAA Board of Directors quarterlymeetings) and perhaps most importantly, I have reveled in theopportunity to spend time with students and faculty.

On the other hand, I will be glad to pass on the box ofAlumni Association files and reclaim that very full shelf on mybookcase. It will be nice to have someone else worrying aboutwhether Alumni Day will be successful and whether or not it will rain onour graduation reception. On the whole, however, the positives faroutweigh the negatives.

Of course, when I step down I won’t completely fade from view, as I

will serve in that grand capacity of “immediate past presi-dent.”

I want you to know how positively I feel about serving aspresident of the alumni board because we are about to electtwo new board members. We must elect a new vice president/president-elect for next year and a new secretary whose termwill continue into 2003. I encourage you to speak with yourfellow alumni to solicit names of those whom you think wouldenjoy serving on our board. I would be happy to talk to anyonewho wants to know about the responsibilities and the bonusesand I can assure you that the latter far outweigh the former.

The UNC-CH SILS Alumni Association believes that strong ties between alumniand the school contribute to a robust educational program. To that end, theassociation supports the work of SILS and encourages alumni involvement inthe school through a variety of programs and initiatives.
