BAR HARBOUR CAMPLocated at Buffalo Lake near Stettler, AB • Ph: 403-742-4887 • www.barharbourcamp.com
Located on beautiful Buffalo Lake, we’re a non-profit organization dedicated to providing quality summer camp experience in a caring Christian atmosphere. A week at Bar Harbour Camp will give you memories and friends to last a lifetime. We have been providing camp activities for our youth for over 75 years and take pride in a great history with all the potential of the future.
For someone who has never been to Bar Harbour Camp, it is tough to explain why we find it so amazing. At camp you get a chance to laugh, grow and find independence. You can find adventure in a plant-strewn path or a giraffe-shaped tree and at the end of the day, you sit around a campfire with woodsy scents all around to sing and reflect with those friends you connected with all day. Our camp isn’t just about the amazing food or the activities; it’s about the experience and the memories that sustain you from September until next June, when the magic repeats. “Friendships developed will last a lifetime.”
CAMP TEEPEE POLEWest of Sundre, AB • Ph: 403-932-1405 • Website: www.campteepeepole.org
Affiliated with Christian Service Brigade, our motto is “win and train BOYS for Christ.”We are also an OUTDOOR adventure camp, a place where boys can be boys while
learning about God, their Creator. Psalm 8:3-5Staff work with the year-round CSB ministries program providing a natural “follow-up”
program for the boys. We choose activities that boys like, methods of training that boys respond to, and leaders who can become friends and role models.
Camp is also a lot of fun! Our activities are outdoor oriented: shooting, hiking, white water rafting, and many others. We ensure activities are “age appropriate.”
Facilities: max 50 campers; 6 cabins; Washhouse with showers and toilets; Kitchen and dining area with qualified cooks who provide great food.

BATES BAR J RANCH Celebrating our 50th Camping Season!Cochrane, Alberta • Ph: (403) 637-2199 • Website: www.batesbarj.comNestled in a secluded valley in the foothills of the Rockies, Bates Bar J Ranch is
found at the fork of the Little Red Deer River and the Grease Creek, about 64km northwest of Calgary. Jack and Barbara Bates founded Bates Bar J Ranch and children’s camp in 1962. Randy and Kathy Bates and children, Russell and Kristina, now run the ranch. Boys and girls participate in real ranch life featuring horseback riding and care of horses.
It is not unusual to see Paints and Quarter horses grazing in the pastures and on the hills. Other activities include hikes, games, survival skills, crafts, dances, campfires and swimming. A full time cook and kitchen staff serves tasty, home-style meals. Counsellor staff ratio is approximately 1 to 5 campers. Our aims are to promote appreciation of the outdoors, wildlife, animals in general and develop new skills and friendships while having fun.

ACCA CO-OPERATIVE YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAMGoldeye Centre near Nordegg, AB • Ph: (780) 991-4620 • Website: www.acca.coop
Summer camp is a time for making new friends and is the place where youth discover their hidden talents. Those who have attended the ACCA Co-opera-tive Youth Leadership Program, (now going into their 53rd year) will tell you that it was one of their most memorable and life-changing experiences. Held at Goldeye Centre near Nordegg, the serene foothills location provides a beauti-ful view of the Rocky Mountains. We aim to develop leadership skills and self-confidence in youth so they can return to their communities and get involved. Every summer, youth learn how to work in committees, elect their own govern-ment and learn how to set up and run a co-operative business. They also devel-op communication and public speaking skills and expand their knowledge of the agriculture industry and the benefits of membership in co-operatives. DAY CAMPS
Day camps operate for periods of one to
eight weeks, providing opportunities for chil-
dren to enjoy a camping experience during
the day while sleeping at home. This type of
camp may be viewed as an introductory stage
to camping at a high comfort level.
RESIDENTIAL CAMPS
Residential Camps operate for periods of
one to eight weeks, offering many different
landscapes and experiences. The activities of-
fered, the style of accommodations, and the
camp’s philosophy vary with each camp.
RELIGIOUSLY AFFILIATED CAMPS
These camps operate programs as an ex-
tension of their community work. In some
cases, religious studies form a portion of the
program, while in other cases it may simply
represent the source of staff commitment
and the philosophy of the programs.
AGENCY SPONSORED CAMPS
A wide variety of social service and public-
ly funded organizations maintain a camping
program as an extension of the service they
offer the community.
SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPS
While most camps can accommodate cer-
tain special needs, parents of campers with
physical, mental, developmental, or emo-
tional needs are advised to investigate those
camps which are designated to serve those
particular needs.
MUNICIPALITY CAMPS
Many municipalities operate a camping
program within their recreational program.
Typically, these programs are of a day camp
nature on sites in the community.
PRIVATE CAMPS
The term ‘private’ refers to the ownership
of the camp rather than the clientele. The
philosophy, staffi ng, program decisions, and
the site development are often closely asso-
ciated with the owner/operator’s leadership
style.

CAMP MASKEPETOONPigeon Lake, Alberta • Ph: (780) 758-6915 • www.maskepetoon.ab.caCelebrating over 50 years of camping, Camp Maskepetoon was named after a
Cree Indian Chief who embraced Christianity and struggled to bring peace and for-giveness to the warring tribes, missionaries and settlers in the region. To this date, those values are what guide the summer camping program as described by our mission statement: “To nurture personal growth and promote respect for nature, others and self through an inclusive, Christian camping experience.”
Camp Maskepetoon has 11 heated, natural log cabins, main lodge and 250 acres on the Northwest shore of Pigeon Lake. Campers participate in many activities such as archery, canoeing, crafts, sports, devotions, waterfront, campfires and many sur-prises! Experiencing a night under the stars at the outback site, making new friends, playing in the mud pit, and making noise around the campfireare just a few of the life- long memories gained.

Gearing up for summer camp fun in 2012BY MARK WEBERRed Deer Express
Summer time offers youngsters
a host of fun-fi lled days packed
with recreation, and making the
season all the more complete is
time spent at summer camp.
No matter what kids are inter-
ested in, there is likely a local
camp that would suit them per-
fectly.
Central Alberta includes all
kinds of summer camps, geared
towards those with a passion for
dance, a penchant for horseback
riding or those who want to spend
time learning about the Bible
while still enjoying a host of rec-
reational opportunities.
There are also camps suited
to those with a range of sporting
sensibilities where swimming,
canoeing, wall-climbing and the
wonders of the outdoors are ex-
plored.
Camps can be found in all kinds
of attractive settings as well, from
locations near Sylvan Lake to the
foothills around Rocky Mountain
House and Nordegg.
Choosing a camp may seem
like an overwhelming venture
considering the multitude of
choices, but the Alberta Camp-
ing Association of Alberta (ACA)
provides tools to narrow down
the possibilities.
For those who would prefer to
go the day camp route, there are
also plenty of choices. This type
of camp may be viewed as an in-
troductory stage to camping at a
high comfort level.
According to the ACA, there
are several key steps to choosing
a perfect camp for your child. Ex-
plore the information available
through the Association’s web
site. The not-for-profi t organiza-
tion formed in 1949 and is made
up of nearly 200 members.
Folks can read about the or-
ganization which “has made its
mandate an assurance of quality
to the public through its program
of accreditation and guidelines
for operations.”
First off, take the time to read
about what each camp has to of-
fer. The ACA offers a Camper’s
Worksheet that is helpful in mak-
ing sure both parent and child are
satisfi ed with the camp selection
as well.
There is also an excellent tab
on the web site called ‘fi nd a
camp’ which lists areas of inter-
est ranging form baseball, biking
and kayaking to cycling, sailing,
backpacking and tennis.
Those searching for the best
camp can check off specifi c inter-
ests and the program fi nds camps
that specialize in those areas.
Once you’ve settled on a pos-
sible camp choice, it’s a good idea
to contact camp offi ces to ask
about session lengths, starting
dates and what is included in the
fee. Sample questions, according
to the ACA, run the gamut from
‘what is your camp’s philosophy’
and ‘what is your ratio of camp-
ers to staff’ to ‘what are the ages
of your counselors’ and ‘what
percentage of campers return ev-
ery year.’
The ACA recommends that
counselors be a minimum age of
17. Parents may also wish to ask
about training, rate of staff turn-
over, and the experience of senior
staff.
Another question might be
‘what provisions are made for
campers with special needs?’
Also, another suggestion gen-
erally speaking is to chat with
others who have previously at-
tended the camp in question.
According to the ACA, once
you register with the camp of
your choice you should have
regular contact from that point
on, receiving “a warm welcome
or confi rmation package, includ-
ing confi rmation of dates, prices,
equipment needed, cancellation
policies, and other necessary
camp information.”

all things related to the summer
camp experience, check out www.

Summer camps for kids aged 6-18
Tips for selecting the right camp for your childBY ELAINE SHAY
Commonly, almost all children
in most parts of the world experi-
ence going to summer camps dur-
ing their school break.
There are lots of available op-
tions so selecting a summer camp
could seem so tedious. Neverthe-
less, the fi rst and most important
thing to keep in mind and consider
is the preference of your camper
child. After all, he/she is the one
who’s going to the camp so it is
only logical that he/she would be
the one to choose.
However, before fi nally decid-
ing, the parents should give per-
mission and a go signal if the child
could go with the summer camp
activity that he/she had chosen.
Being the parents of the child
selecting a summer camp, they
should always bear in mind the
security and safety of their child.
It is important to know where the
camp would be held, for how many
days, and what the activities would
specifi cally be. Also, always con-
sider if the camp would fi t your
child’s personality and would not
get him/her into trouble. If you
are 100% approving of your child’s
choice, then he/she is now ready
to go! Now, what exactly are the
available choices for your child?
First of all, the academic camps
are the fi rst most accessible choice
for your children especially if the
school gives this as a requirement.
Science camps are a fun thing
to attend to because there are so
many interesting experiments and
things to learn. Technology and
computer camps are the most pop-
ular choice among students.
Next, if your child is selecting
a summer camp based on his/her
interests, it is essential to assess
what kind of activity he/she would
like to engage in to maximize his/
her time and effort. It is important
that the child would learn new
things and meet new people to
hone their personalities.
If your child is into music, there
are band camps which teach camp-
ers to play various instruments
and to develop their singing talent.
Furthermore, acting and danc-
ing workshops are also popular
among kids.
The arts and crafts summer
camp lessons are also one of the
children’s favourites because here
they are able to show their talents
in drawing, painting, and making
crafty things. They are also given
the opportunity to improve on
what they believe they are good at.
On the other hand, if your child
loves sports, a lot of camps offer
lessons in different kinds of sports
like football, basketball, swim-
ming, and tennis, among others.
Add to that, there are also ad-
venture camps that the kids would
surely enjoy as they would have
fun doing activities that they love.
It is like play time on over time,
and at the same time, the children
would learn something from their
experience.

SUMMER SCHOOL AT CHINOOK’S EDGEInnisfail, Sylvan Lake & Olds • Ph: 1-800-561-9229 • Website: www.chinooksedge.ab.ca
Chinook’s Edge School Division offers summer schools in three communities, making it convenient for students to take courses for credit. Summer school is available in Innisfail, Sylvan Lake and Olds. High School students, or those enter-ing grade 10 in September, 2012, are able to take courses to upgrade existing marks, complete a required course missing from their timetable, or for personal reasons. All core high school courses are offered and there is no charge for stu-dents currently in Chinook’s Edge. Students work at their own pace, but under the guidance and supervision of teachers who provide assistance when need-ed. Taking a summer course provides students the opportunity to upgrade their marks in a course they didn’t do well in, or it can help reduce their course load in September. Summer School runs Monday to Friday, July 2 - 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Begin next school year ahead of the game.

During breaks, it is common for
children and teenagers around
the world to attend a summer
camp to enrich their experience
and knowledge in various fi elds.
Depending on your child’s prefer-
ence, he/she could choose from
various activities to join.
There are camps which are re-
quired as part of the school cur-
riculum. Examples of these are
academic camps focusing on ad-
vanced or remedial mathematics
lessons or computer and technol-
ogy camps.
There are also camps which fo-
cus on music, teaching children
to play various instruments and
techniques in singing. Further-
more, to develop one’s personal-
ity, there are dance and acting
camps that your kid could join.
On the other hand, if your child
is more inclined to sports, there
are also lots of camps offering
this summer program on differ-
ent kinds of sports. Also, some
camps teach children basic and
advance martial arts.
Finally, there are special inter-
est camps which basically are for
children who would like to enjoy
their school break and meet other
kids. There are adventure camps
wherein coordinators prepare for
fun playful activities that the kids
could enjoy.
A summer camp could be a day
camp wherein the child could go
home after a spending a day of
activities. Alternatively, there
are lots of camps which require
the kids to go overnight or stay
for days away from home. Par-
ents are not allowed to go with
the children because this is the
time to train them to be inde-
pendent. However, parents could
bring their children to the meet-
ing place before departure and
they could also fetch them upon
arrival.
In situations such as these, par-
ents sometimes feel separation
anxiety from their children, es-
pecially in the case when it is the
fi rst time that they would expe-
rience this. Because parents are
very much used to their children
being at home during the breaks
and on school days, they tend to
become lonely as they don’t have
their children to have fun with.
However, parents must learn
how to cope with their separation
from the children as they should
let their kids have some fun in
summer camp.
Here, we will enumerate for
you the things that you could do
to combat the separation anxiety
that you feel while your child is
in summer camp. Take a look and
learn the ways you could do to
pass time.
• Enroll in a special interest
class. While your kid is away
learning something new during
the break, you too could see this
as an opportunity to also address
your personal interests. You
could try enrolling in cooking
classes or yoga courses. What-
ever your preference might be,
there is an available adult sum-
mer class for you.
• Go out with your other half.
Who says only kids could have
fun? While they are away, you
could plan on an intimate beach
trip or a short getaway for two.
Alternatively, if your spouse is
not available, you could always
ask your friends to go with you.
• Learn a hobby. You could
learn how to do cross-stitching,
baking, photography or other
things that interests you. This
is the perfect time because your
children won’t be around in a few
days so nobody could disturb you.
• Read on your piles of books
and fi nish watching your tons of
DVDs. Nothing beats days of la-
zily doing nothing in the house
and just being a couch potato. It
would feel like you are back to
being a teenager again because
there are no kids to tend to.
• Pamper yourself for a day in
the spa and a stroll in the mall to
shop. Surely, you won’t really be
depressed if you experience the
things you love, right?
Now, are you still suffering
from separation anxiety?

After all, there are a number of things
to keep in mind when fi guring out if your
child is okay with setting off for adventure
away from home for a week of fun and new
experiences.
Are they comfortable in unfamiliar set-
tings?
When asked about their interest in leav-
ing the City for summer camp, do they
light up or shy away from the subject?
Something else to consider is does your
son or daughter make new friends easily?
Do they have problems speaking up about
concerns that may arise?
If it turns out that some of these are
signifi cant issues, enjoying a camp experi-
ence near home may be the best option for
a slice of summer time fun.
There is much to explore in Red Deer in-
cluding a slate of day camps and other kid-
focused adventures and activities through
the City of Red Deer at the Collicutt Cen-

BY FERIAN RIASE
With the summer vaca-
tions approaching and the
kids becoming restless,
many parents start looking
for ways to keep their kids
busy. This is when a sum-
mer camp comes to their
rescue.
Summer camps allow
children to indulge in fun
activities like swimming,
hiking, horse riding, sail-
ing, etc., and therefore
prove to be an ideal solu-
tion for such parents. Sum-
mer camps are benefi cial
for both the kids as well as
the parents.
On the one hand, kids
have lots of fun while they
learn how to make their
own lunch, make their
beds, sweep the fl oor and
even do their own laundry.
And, on the other hand,
parents can relax at home,
enjoy their free time and do
things they generally can-
not do because they do not
have the time to do, such
as, for example, reading a
book, watch a movie, take
a nap or even visit a friend.
Nowadays, camps fo-
cus on a particular area
such as language, art, foot-
ball or science. Language
programs are becoming
increasingly popular be-
cause, apart from having
fun, kids can learn a new
language and enjoy a beau-
tiful landscape at the same
time.
You should consider a
few important things be-
fore sending your kid to a
camp. Kids generally do
not like to change their way
of living and have prob-
lems adjusting to the new
surroundings, particularly
when they are required to
stay away from home, even
if it is for a very short dura-
tion.
Though some kids take
to the idea of staying away
from home easily, but there
are some for whom chang-
ing their routine might be
problematic. In such a case,
you should try to send your
kid to a camp where some
of his/her friends are also
going. This will enable your
kid to easily settle in the
new surroundings, without
feeling lost and alone.
When picking a camp for
your child, there are a few
things to bear in mind. All
camps must have specifi c
rules regarding health. In
the majority of the cases,
camps have a doctor or
some kind of nurse to act if
something happens.
Of course, if your kid
suffers from some disease
or illness and requires a
special type of medicine,
you must let the camp’s
main staff know of it on the
very fi rst day. Make sure
that the camp has special-
ized personnel with lifesav-
ing techniques and CPR,
just in case an accident
takes place. Nevertheless,
you do not have to worry.
The majority of the camps
are very safe.
If you send your children
to a summer camp, you
will be sure that they are
going to have a very good
time, surrounded by many
children of their age. It is a
good opportunity for them
to make new friends and
learn to share with others.
You will not regret sending
your children to a summer
camp, and you will want to
send them again the next
year because it is for sure
they will ask to go to it
again.

Keeping kids safe in the sunThroughout the summer there is noth-
ing like getting to play outside in the warm
weather.
You have all day to play and have lots
of adventures, with no school or responsi-
bilities. But nothing can ruin your fun like
getting a nasty sunburn. Here are some
simple sun safety tips that will keep you
having fun in the sun.
Wear sunscreen - one of the easiest ways
to protect yourself from the sun is to use
sunscreen and know how to apply it cor-
rectly. You should remember to put on sun-
screen at least 15 minutes before going out-
side, it is better if you put it on 30 minutes
before going outside. Remember to put
sunscreen on any area that is exposed to
the sun, especially hands, ears, neck, feet,
nose, shoulders and lips.
You also need to remember to reapply
sunscreen at least every two hours. You
should also reapply sunscreen every time
after your have been swimming or get
sweaty. Waterproof sunscreen is a better
choice if you will be around the water, and
always use sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.
Cover up -- another simple way to protect
your skin from the sun is to cover up. Hats
and UV protected sunglasses are impor-
tant to protect your face and eyes from sun
damage. Also wearing protective clothing,
including clothing with UV protection will
also help prevent sun damage.
Limit time outside during peak sun
hours -- it is also fairly simple to plan not
to spend too much time outside during the
sunniest hours of the day. The sun is most
powerful from around 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
During these times it is a good idea to have
other fun activities arranged, so you can
be sure to get out of the sun for a while and
protect yourself from sun damage.
Be careful near water and sand -- when
you are playing at the beach in the water
and on the sand you should be extra care-
ful about sun safety. Both water and sand
refl ect the sunlight, which can cause more
sun damage. Be sure to cover up as much
as possible and be careful to reapply your
sunscreen often and after you have been in
the water.
