B.C. timber baron J.O. Trethewey and his brothers, owners of Abbotsford Lumber Company, built an incline railroad to bring logs down from the top of Sumas Mountain. The weight of the cars coming down pulled the empty cars back up to the logging site. The loaded cars were transported to the mill on Mill Lake for processing and timber was exported for projects such as the Wellend Canal in Ontario.

Coast-to-coast tour stops in Abbotsford

Canadian pop rockers Hedley are bringing their electro-infused anthems to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on April 12 as part of their coast-to-coast Wild Live Tour.

The band will be performing more than 30 shows across the country to promote their fifth studio album, Wild Life, and will be joined by special guests Classified and USS.

Lead vocalist Jacob Hoggard, origi-nally from Abbotsford, says it doesn’t matter if they are performing on the JUNO stage or at a small town venue, they approach it with the same sin-cerity.

“Performing for us is being who we are onstage and letting ourselves come out naturally, and I think that makes a big difference,” says Hoggard. “We can laugh, have fun and be really passionate about the music.”

Hedley’s ever-changing sounds con-tinue to be reciprocated by audiences, proven by their four consecutive multi-platinum albums Hedley (2005), Famous Last Words (2007), The Show

I made a record that sounded like the last one I made.”

Leading up to the release of each single, Hoggard finds himself in a state of “pure anxiety,” and often second guesses whether the fans will posi-tively receive the new music.

So far, Wild Life has been nothing short of a smashing success.

“The other night I had a really awe-some experience when I went back-stage to get a drink of water and the crowd was stomping on the ground so it sounded like thunder and they were cheering the bands’ name,” says Hoggard. “I was standing by myself in the dark and I shut my eyes, and it felt almost fake, like how a dream would feel … and I said to myself out loud, ‘You’re not dreaming.’”

Tickets for the Abbotsford show are on sale now. Hedley will also be offer-ing several VIP packages including a meet and greet, exclusive merchandise items, and an exciting “Golden Ticket” opportunity. Check www.hedleyvip.com for details.

Must Go (2009), and Storms (2011). Hoggard explains that the “musical evolution” of the band is more prom-inent than ever with the fifth album, which includes their fastest selling sin-gle “Anything.”

“For us that evolutionary process of learning involves a lot of experi-menting, trying new things, and that’s why it’s almost an imperative that our album sounds different as we progress through our journey as song writers,” says Hoggard. “I would be devastated if

Bun hairstyles are relatively easy to create but have an air of complexity that makes people think you spent hours perfecting your ’do. Here are the most popular hair buns of 2014.

MESSY BUNNo matter what type of hair you have, thick or thin, straight or curly, this look can work for you.

LOW BUNThe always chic low-knotted bun is perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a work meeting, wedding or cof-fee date with your friends.

FRENCH BRAID BUNThese are really stylish. Just gather your hair and french braid it, work-ing across the back of the head. Then twist the end of the braid around to form a bun. Magnifique!

SIDE BUNSide buns are super simple. Make a low side ponytail, then twist the tail until it wraps up into a bun and pin it in place.

Best tressedHOT BUNS1. Make a ponytail

2. Tease it until you get big messy hair

5. Secure the end of the teased hair with a small elastic

5. Roll your hair down gently, until the elastic meets the base of your ponytail

6. Thread the ponytail end through the front

7. Tease the ends and spray

8. Secure the bun`s edges with bobby pins

9. Spray again and use your fingers to shape it

Say goodbye to your false eyelash-es and lash extensions! Grow and thicken your own spectacular lash-es naturally.

Many things can hinder hair growth, harsh mascaras, dyes, excessive sun exposure, or simple genetics.

There are three distinct phases for lash growth, the anagen, catagen, and telogen phases. The anagen phase is where the lash and brow enhancers stimulate the growth potential. Most enhancers contain specific peptides, which are chains of amino acids that stimulate kera-tin production. By applying an en-hancer directly to the hair follicle, each hair strand receives causing it to grow stronger, thicker and longer.

Here are some great choices for lash and brow enhancers.

The My Health My Community Survey can further enhance this work by improving our understand-ing of the conditions in which fam-ilies live, including how safe resi-dents feel walking in their neigh-bourhood or if they can afford to put healthy food on the table. This information can also be used in other planning processes such as the upcoming Official Commu-nity Plan update. To get the best picture of health in Abbotsford, Fraser Health is hoping

According to the Canadian Med-ical Association, 75% of illness is related to lifestyle, community liv-ability and access to health care.  In Abbotsford, we are trying to improve our knowledge about life-styles and health care access, and how the community affects our health.  The Fraser Health Author-ity and Vancouver Coastal Health Authority are working to change that with the My Health My Com-munity survey (www.myhealthmy-community.org).

Fight back with your time.

Fighting cancer is a matter of time. Your time. When you donate as few as three hours to the Canadian Cancer Society’s campaign efforts, you help save lives and support those living with cancer. Volunteering is a small gesture that makes an enormous difference. We need your support to beat this disease. Get involved. Volunteer. Contact your local office.

Early in 2013, the Abbotsford Food Bank

requested that the Rotary Club of Abbotsford

fund a pilot project designed to bridge existing

in-school breakfast and lunch programs

with the absence of any food over weekends

for elementary students at risk. Each week

volunteers pack two breakfasts, two lunches,

two dinners, and healthy snacks into each

backpack with food to last the weekend. The

backpacks are then delivered by volunteers to

elementary schools. ‘Blessings in a Backpack’

has expanded from the original single school

project to nine schools serving 140 students and

their families.

Without the financial and volunteer support

of corporate partners, non-profit groups, faith

groups and individuals, this program would not

be possible.

us glad that we were able to help out. Volunteering can be a great experience and both teens and adults should try to make time

for at least a few hours here and there. Teens can learn valuable life lessons that will help them to become better adults. After

National Volunteer Week (April 6-12, 2014) is a time to recog-nize, celebrate and thank Cana-da’s 13.3 million volunteers. With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enor-mous to you, your family, and your community. Volunteer work is important not only to individ-ual volunteers but to Canadian society as a whole. Volunteers strengthen our communities and make our country vibrant be-cause these acts of kindness all over Canada boost our nation’s happiness.

Volunteering gives us a feeling of satisfaction at giving back to our community. For every good deed we do, our self-esteem and confidence grows. Just seeing the smile on someone’s face makes

all, a generation that loves to volunteer and be an active part of the community would benefit everyone.

One of the better-known bene-fits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Unpaid vol-unteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Vol-unteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. However, volun-teering is a two-way street, and it can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your social skills. Vol-unteering is a fundamental act of good citizenship and it’s also essential in our society.

Extra clothes, always, no exceptions (rain wear, fleece jacket, toque even in summer). Spring is in the air and thoughts turn to getting outside. We are surrounded with amazing hiking in the Fraser Valley. But how can we hike safely?

Here are a few tips to have fun and be safe!

1. KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING

Have a map and a compass or GPS. If you have a GPS, know how to use it and have extra batteries. Communications can be limited. Don’t rely on your cell phone but bring it with a full charge.

2. TAKE A FRIEND.

If you are new to hiking, go with others. Share your experiences with others and see what others see.

5. LET SOMEONE KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING AND WHEN YOU PLAN TO BE BACK

Leave a note in your vehicle stating the trail and when you plan to return (fold it up so you aren’t advertising how long you are leaving your vehicle unattended).

6. BE COMFORTABLE Good hiking shoes, socks

and comfortable clothes (non-cotton) are a must.

THEDISH

The reality is, much of the wine we find in our market place is ready to drink now or very soon. Yes, some wine can reap benefit from lying down for a while longer, and other wine will definitely get better with age, but, sadly, some wine will only get tired with age.

So, how do you know if a wine is ready to open and drink? My stock answer is, “Well, it depends.”

I am not trying to be evasive or guard some state secret; it really does depend. It depends on the region, sub-region, vintage, grape variety, producer, age of the vines, and so on.

That’s not to say there aren’t some general guidelines, because there are. A vintage chart is one of the tools that can help you with a broad overview.

But better yet, especially here in B.C., just contact the Okanagan or Fraser Valley winemakers about their products and ask them. They’ll tell you.

EXPLOREOUR FAMILY FAVOURITE RECIPES ONLINE

Rob, the Farmer, and I, the Foodie,

both love growing and producing

wholesome meats and produce,

cooking great food and believe that

sharing it with our community re-

wards us in infinitely greater ways

than the effort required to produce

it. I am looking forward to sharing

my musings about what is happen-

ing on our farm and in the Market,

season by season.

It’s that time of year when our farm

equipment motors are revving, as

impatient for the first sunny stretch

of warm weather as a wobbly-legged

young calf straining to be released

to the new spring pasture. We’ve

dreamt and debated over all the

vibrant possibilities pictured in our

seed catalogs long enough, it’s time

to start planting! We’re excited about

adding more Lepp Farms grown pro-

duce at the market, including field

strawberries, sweet carrots and candy

cane beets.  Before you know it, our

market bins will be overflowing with

BC’s best fruits and vegetables.

We created Lepp Farm Market to

connect our community with as many

locally sourced products as we can,

and to inspire you to prepare them in

simple and delicious ways. Because

after all, good food, good laughter

and bountiful crops

are always better

when shared!
