WHAT IS GEOCACHING?Geocaching is a modern version of a treasure hunt where people use their GPS-enabled smart phones to navigate their way to a set of coordinates. (Coordinates and a clue will be published in The Surrey-North Delta Leader newspaper). Once at the coordinates, participants search the area for the “cache.” In this case, the cache will be a simple container in which you will find a notepad, a trinket and, for the first person to find the cache, a prize token that can be claimed at The Leader office. This is a fantastic way to explore the city and have a great time with friends. So keep your eyes on The Leader and keep this guide handy, as the clues will be taken from the content in this guide.

Good luck!

As one of the fastest-growing major cities in Canada, there’s plenty to do and see in Surrey.

And with the mercury beginning to rise, there’s no perfect time like the present to explore some of the city’s best-kept secrets.

To help uncover these mysterious hot spots – destinations that are often overlooked by many, even long-time locals – we’ve turned to Rebecca Bollwitt.

The multi-award winning social media superstar has been highlighting life

in B.C. since 2004 on her little slice of cyberspace, Miss 604.com.

Bollwitt currently resides in Vancouver with her husband John; however, many of her blogging exploits bring her back over the bridge to her hometown of Surrey.

Born and raised in Whalley, Bollwitt  has many fond memories of her former stomping grounds (formerly dubbed “the City of Parks”) and the lush trails, green spaces and playgrounds are what fi rst come to mind when reminiscing about her childhood.

“The number-one thing

for me has always been the green spaces,” said Bollwitt, who resided in Surrey for 23 years with

her parents and two siblings.

“We’d ride our bikes in the forest, play soccer

in the fi elds – I was also a sucker for any type of playground.”

He loves to get the family down to Crescent Beach, or watch a show at Surrey Little Theatre.

Surrey RCMP Sgt. Dale Carr, the former face of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and now Surrey’s offi cer in charge of communications and special events, says he loves to wind down at Surrey’s beach.

“I love going to Crescent Beach and just going for a walk,” Carr says.

He likes to dine out with friends as well.

“We like The Keg.”Carr is also a fan of

live theatre, and will often take his family to see shows at Surrey Little Theatre.

“We’ve gone there several times,” Carr says. “We like going

to plays. They’re just fun. It’s not a big production, maybe 50 people in the audience.”

For a quiet afternoon, he likes to cycle Barnston Island.

“It’s nice and quiet, it’s a 10K loop, and there’s not a lot of traffi c,” Carr says.

As the new RCMP offi cer in charge of policing special events, Carr says he’s getting a whole new perspective on how much there is to do in Surrey.

Crescent Beach is located at 12160 Beecher St. Surrey Little Theatre is located at 7024 184 St. Barnston Island is situated in the Fraser

River between Surrey and Pitt Meadows. Catch a free fi ve-minute ferry at the eastern edge of 104 Avenue.

When Carr runs out of gas, he hits the theatreBeach walking and cycling are also favourite activities for Surrey RCMP sergeant

Nowadays, Bollwitt comes back to the ’burbs any chance she gets to spend time with family. She also enjoys attending festivals and returning

to the landmarks she frequented as a child.

Here are fi ve of Bollwitt’s favourite haunts. But sshh... don’t go telling everyone about these little gems.

 1. Jamaican Mi Juicy Cultural diversity and

cuisine are the hallmark of fairs, which present a unique opportunity to sample tasty treats from around the world.

Bollwitt has sampled her fair share of cuisine from food trucks over the years, but has a soft spot for Jamaican Mi Juicy – a popular dining destination that offers a variety of unique and ethnic eats, including traditional jerk chicken and fresh fruit smoothies sweetened with cane sugar.

“This Jamaican foodie truck is defi nitely a hidden gem that seems to be at every event in Surrey,” said Bollwitt.

“Surrey has some great food – most people don’t

know that. Yes, there’s the Boston Pizzas and Red Robbins, but there are also so many good ethnic eats.”

 2. Honey Bee CentreThe memory of

devouring an entire brick of beeswax while visiting the Honey Bee Centre still stings a little for Bollwitt. However, her unusual snack was all in the name of good fun... er, more like a necessary challenge in completing the Amazing Hunt – an interactive scavenger hunt that combines the fun of the amazing race with a three-hour sightseeing tour.

While Bollwitt doesn’t recommended going there to eat a brick of beeswax, she urges anyone who hasn’t been in to this buzzing little visitor attraction that consists of a commercial honey farm, country store and CFIA approved honey-packing facility to swing by the

location at 7480 176 St.“It smells amazing –

you can get honey for all occasions, candles and everything from honey-based energy supplements to fruit-infused honey,” she said. “There are also some great interactive displays for all ages.”

 3. Cloverdale Flea Market

Cloverdale has been home to the fl ea market for more than 36 years. Situated on the famous Cloverdale Fairgrounds, it is a well-known institution in the Fraser Valley that runs all year long.

It’s also a favourite Surrey hot spot for Bollwitt.

“It’s a pretty big attraction – there’s a good market and a lot of antiques to browse through.”

Every Sunday, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., the two buildings on site and outdoors are fi lled with tables that yield an eclectic mix of goods for sale, from electronics, household items, hand-made crafts and artwork, to jewelry, clothing and collectives. Visitors can also expect to fi nd fruits, vegetables, plants and fresh-cut fl owers.

 4. Redwood Park

The parks and green spaces continue to be draw for Bollwitt  – Redwood Park is no exception.

As a child, the former Surrey resident enjoyed exploring the steeply sloping wooded hill, which contains a major collection of exotic tree species, particularly evergreens.

“It’s a huge park with such a diversity of trees and plant life,” she said, also noting that the pioneer homestead that once belonged to a father and son is a must-see attraction.

“It’s a lot of fun to explore,” she said of the two-storey tree house.

Redwood Park is located at 17900 20 Ave. 5. Barnston IslandLocated in the Fraser River between Surrey

and Pitt Meadows, Barnston Island brings back plenty of fond memories for Bollwitt.

“We use to drive and park on the main side – my brother, sister and myself would pop on our bikes and circle the whole perimeter of the island... it’s a great cycle route, especially for kids,” she said of the picturesque property that is just a short fi ve-minute ferry route from Surrey on 104 Avenue across from Parson’s Channel.

Now that the word about these best-kept secret hot spots is out, it’s time to go and explore them for yourself. For more information on upcoming events and day-trips in Surrey and throughout Metro Vancouver, visit www.miss604.com

There is no better place to get outside than Surrey – especially if you’re tired of the same old outdoor recreational activities and want to shake things up and try something new.

Fortunately, one doesn’t have to venture far.

Here are some ideas to consider on land, in the air and at sea.

HORSEBACK RIDINGFor suburban city

slickers, Surrey truly is an equestrian lover’s paradise.

For those who don’t have a horse of their own, just trot on over to one of the stables or riding lessons nearby. Here are a handful of stables/equestrian centres in the Surrey area:

 • A & T Equestrian4615 190 St.Visit www.aandequestrian.com  or call 604-574-3211. • Unicorn Stables5095 125A St.Visit www.unicornstables.com or call 604-590-5172. • Semiahmoo Stables1528 172 St.Visit www.semiahmoostables.com or call 604-536-9440. • Willow Acres18590 20 Ave.Visit www.willoacres.com or call 604-531-5159. ULTRALIGHT FLYING

Have you ever dreamed of seeing Surrey at sunset from a bird’s-eye view? How about from the view of an ultralight aircraft?

King George Aviation at 4981 King George Blvd.

can help your aviation dreams take fl ight.

Participants have the choice of fl ying over White Rock beaches, tracking the curves of the Fraser River, orbiting the rush hour traffi c in downtown Vancouver, or simply taking in the beauty of the local mountains. Visit www.kingeorgeaviation.com for more info.

 AQUA ADVENTURES

There are many opportunities to discover the city’s many waterways

– one of the most popular of which is a paddler with a non-motorized boat, like a kayak or canoe.

The Blueways Master Plan encourages non-motorized recreational boating on waterways in a way that supports the fi sh, wildlife and agricultural communities.

Each of the following four routes boasts a distinct character and experience for paddlers:• Nicomekl River - The Surrey Floating Nature Trail provides a controlled

paddling experience on the lower Nicomekl River. • Serpentine River - The Serpentine Paddling Circuit provides a loop for novice and exercise-oriented paddlers in the central Serpentine Valley. • Fraser River - The Fraser River Challenge provides a route for experienced paddlers from Surrey Bend to Brownsville Bar.

For more information about paddling the blueways, email [email protected] or call 604-501-5050.

Nature is the key to relaxation for local environmentalist Deb Jack. She often takes time to just sit and look at the various green spaces around the city.

“I like to pack a lunch and sit in my car and look out at the trees’” says Jack. “Holland Park has a wonderful grove of trees near the parking lot beneath the SkyTrain line.”

When visiting South Surrey she’ll fi nd a high vantage point near Sunnyside Urban Forest along 148 Street and positions her car facing north to get a wonderful view of the tall evergreens and the North Shore mountains.

“If I sit and read my book I love to look up and see nature” she says.

For a breakfast treat, Jack enjoys the Knight and Day restaurant near

96 Avenue and King George Boulevard.

“I always order the bacon and eggs with yam fries and a side of broccoli.”

Holland Park is located at 13428 Old Yale Rd. Sunnyside Urban Forest is located at 2598 144 St. Knight and Day is located at 9677 King George Blvd.

Down time for Surrey Food Bank Executive Director Marilyn Herrmann is anything fl oral, be it a local park or gardening store, or the atmosphere at a local pub.

“My husband is 78 years old and though he is incredibly active, we no longer canoe or hike trails, beaches or mountains as we once did,” she says. “I do love to go with him after work during the sunny months or on the weekends to Brewsters in Newton where we sit on the patio and enjoy dinner or appetizers and a good glass of wine.”

Herrmann is trained as a

certifi ed fl oral designer and seeks natural beauty when she can.

“Their manager Denise personally grows amazingly beautiful fl owers and hanging baskets on the patio, which

she lovingly cares for all summer. It creates such a lovely surrounding while enjoying our dinner in the amazing warmth of the sunshine.

“After our dinner we often take a slow, leisurely walk around Bear Creek Park or visit 99 Nursery where I just wander through the greenhouses or

through the outside gardens and I revel in the natural smells and beauty of the fl owers and nature.

“By the time I come home, my work day and any problems are far behind me and I have a renewed outlook, ready for the next day ahead.”

Brewster’s Pub is located at #700-7380 King George Blvd. 99 Nursery is located at 9376 King George Blvd. Bear Creek Park is located at 13750 88 Ave.

For children’s entertainer Chris Hamilton, choosing only a handful of favourite places to go in Surrey is close to impossible.

“There’s so many wonderful spots to relax, play, eat, shop or explore in our own backyard Picking just a few is not easy,” he says.

When he needs a little relaxation mixed with people-watching, however, few places beat a beautiful walk along Crescent Beach to Blackie Spit, Hamilton says. The latter locale, he assures, is much nicer than its name might imply.

“Even when it’s a little crowded you can fi nd plenty of space to get off the path and enjoy the scenery and it’s the best place in Surrey to watch a sunset.”

He adds Green Timbers Urban Forest and Bear Creek Park to his list of favourites among the dozens of wonderful

spots to get away from city life – right in the heart of the city.

For indoor exploration, the Surrey Art Gallery and Surrey Museum are also hits for Hamilton and his family.

For an interesting, “something for everyone” outing, the Cloverdale Flea Market, with its hidden treasures, is always browse-worthy, he says.

Hamilton is a children’s musician and illustrator. His

“Walter & Jazzy” mascot characters can be seen in the children’s department of all Surrey Libraries.

As a longtime local resident, he also points to Surrey’s several world-class events, particularly the Fusion Festival each July and Surrey Children’s Festival in May.

Blackie Spit is located at 3136 McBride Ave. Green Timbers Urban Forest is located in the 14600-block 100 Ave,. Surrey Museum is located 17710 56A Ave. The Cloverdale Flea Market is open Sundays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 6050 176 St.

While many of his evenings are spent in gymnasiums coaching basketball or at parks coaching baseball, there is one specifi c area Steve Beauchamp can go to get away from it all.

“I love to go to Tynehead Park and walk the dogs,” he says. “It’s a great facility, you can take the dogs to the off-leash area, or go for a walk by the stream.”

The coach of the Holy Cross Crusaders girls’ high school basketball team, as well as a coach at the club level and in community softball in Fleetwood, has been going to Tynehead Regional Park for several years.

With 10 kilometres of walking trails, and fi ve kilometres of bike trails, there is no shortage of areas to walk alongside the Serpentine River, over the Hawthorne Trail to the dog

leash-optional area, or to the Tynehead Hatchery.

Beauchamp, the owner of three border collie crosses aged 12, 10 and two years, visits the park “three or four times a month” by himself or with his wife and daughters.

“If I’m really ambitious, I can jump on my bike and take one of the dogs, and it’s two kilometers away,” he said. “But if I’m taking my wife or the kids,

we all jump in the car.”Tynehead is the

preferred location, but sometimes after coaching his daughters at a softball game in Fleetwood, there isn’t time to get there. But there is a second option.

“Fleetwood Park is nice, too,” said Beauchamp. “We take the dogs to a game,

ICBC INJURY CLAIMSHELPING VICTIMS FOR OVER 25 YEARS

by Kristyl Clark

Even with the increasing number of big box stores and chain restaurants that have set up shop in Surrey over the years, the independent mom-and-pop establishments continue to be an important part of the local landscape.

Perhaps it’s the home-cooked meals and homey environment that keeps patrons coming back. Or maybe it’s the

familiarity that comes from frequenting the same small garage, bookstore or eatery for years.

One thing is certain – fi nding a gem off the beaten path is like being privy to one of Surrey’s best-kept secrets.

But of course, we’re going to spill the beans and let you in on some reputable hot spots worth checking out.

1. Mc Jac’s Roadhouse Grille

For those who enjoy

delicious, wholesome comfort food, mighty portions and an eclectic ambience, Mc Jac’s Roadhouse Grille in South Surrey is well-worth the trek.

In addition to an enticing menu, this popular eatery, located at 1781 King George Blvd., offers fi ve ambient spaces to dine in. Choose from the Retro Dining Room, the Deco

Dining Room, the Martini Lounge, the Garden Patio and the new Atrium. There’s even a Treasure Cave for younger diners.

2. Fresgo Inn Restaurant & Bakery

Established in 1963, Fresgo Inn Restaurant & Bakery, located at 10102 King George Blvd, has been a unique gathering place for the Surrey community for decades. Aside from the unique cafeteria-style dining experience, old-school ambience and hearty portions, there’s also a bakery.

3. Al & Jan’s Fish & ChipsThe “All You Can Eat” sign

may entice you to pop in, but it’s the homey atmosphere, friendly service and tasty fare that will keep you coming back again and again.

This little family-operated fi sh-and-chips joint, located at 9014 152 St. in Fleetwood (tucked in the PriceSmart Foods), used to be a C-Lover’s franchise. However, owners Al and Jan Wolkoski went the independent route in the ’90s and have continued to make a big splash with the locals ever since.

4. Aaron’s PizzaWhile this place may not look

like much from the outside, the restaurant, located at 17665 57

Ave., gets hopping busy with locals and foodies from all over the Fraser Valley and beyond.

For more than 40 years, the Cloverdale eatery has been serving up their signature Greek and Italian dishes using only the freshest, high-quality ingredients.

5. Round Up CafeGet ready to travel back in

time by taking a little trip to the Round Up Cafe. This retro greasy spoon diner, located in the heart of Whalley at 10449 King George Blvd., has been operating since 1949. The menu includes breakfast and a variety of home-style meals.

6. Bruce’s Edge Skate Sharpening

Bruce McGill never grows tired hearing the hum of his sharpening stone.

The South Surrey resident opened Bruce’s Edge Skate Sharpening in the basement of his South Surrey home at 15485 Poplar Dr., 14 years ago and has watched young children toting hockey sticks grow into adults carrying babies of their own. Although it’s a small shop (approximately 500 square feet),

7. Ray Ota Services LtdRay Ota Services Ltd. isn’t

lacking in business or praise from their long-time loyal customers. This little independently owned mechanic shop, located at 10670 135A St., opened in 2001 – back when it was a popular

area for automotive wholesalers to be situated. The automotive wholesalers have since packed up shop; however, Ray Ota Services Ltd. still has its roots planted fi rm.

GEO

Good luck!

There is certainly no shortage of things to do in a city as large and diverse as Surrey. Whether it’s a trip for the outdoor adventurer or a lesson in local heritage for the avid learner, a day in the city can become the experience of a lifetime.

Here are just six ways to shape a day in the community.

1.Hit the beachTake a trip to the

seashore, and visit the

quaint community of Crescent Beach, 3140 McBride Ave. Restored beach cottages, ice cream parlours and coffee shops help give this picturesque area its small-town charm.

Walk along the shoreline and marvel at stunning views of Boundary Bay, or take your vantage point above sea level by climbing the staircases of 101 Steps or 1,001 Steps. For some of the best bird watching in the country,

stroll over to the wildlife conservation area of Blackie Spit Park.

2. Shop till you drop

48 The Leader 2014 Surrey Insider/Outsider Community Guide

by Kristyl Clark

There’s a high-tech treasure hunt that’s happening right now in Surrey – one that relies on using GPS-enabled devices rather than a trusty old map.

But don’t worry matey, pirates aren’t taking over the community. This particular pursuit is called geocaching – a recreational pastime for many local residents and participants from all over the world.

Groups and individuals set out to navigate a specifi c set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to fi nd the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Each geocache contains a logbook and trinket to take and trade such as pins or small toys.

Currently, there are 2,382,628 active geocaches and more than six million geocachers worldwide, including a group in the Surrey area.

Nadia Chan, the natural areas coordinator for the City of Surrey, says geocachers must contact the city’s parks division prior to placing a geocache in a park. This is to protect both the green space and the safety of participants.

“We just found that geocaches were being placed in environmentally sensitive areas and areas that could potentially be dangerous,” she said in regards to the policy that was put into place back in 2009.

“We don’t want to encourage participants to go off the trail and down steep banks to fi nd the geocaches - that’s why we got involved to create a procedure we follow.”

Prior to placing a geocache, participants are required to either meet with city staff at the proposed park site to discuss the

location of their cache or provide maps and photos of preferred locations via email.

The geocaches range in size and can be pretty much any object under the sun.

Those who have hidden geocaches in Surrey parks have been pretty creative, notes Chan.

“Sometimes they’re hidden inside a hollowed-out rock, sometimes just a Tupperware container hidden behind a stump – there are even ‘nanocaches’ as small as a magnetic push pin,” she said.

“The geocachers are very ingenious in what they hide and how they hide them.”

While it’s still a relatively new phenomenon, geocaching is catching on with all ages.

There are 2,389,880 active geocaches and more than six million geocachers worldwide.

“There are lots of families who participate in this – it’s a great pastime to do together,” said Chan.

For the most part, geocaching is a solo or small group activity. However, there are various geocaching community events that bring participants together from all over Surrey and Metro Vancouver.

“It’s a great opportunity to get people out to parks they may not

have seen before or visited and it’s such a positive experience,” said Chan of the events that in the past have included Cache In, Trash Out– a chance for volunteers to hunt for geocaches while ridding the area of litter. There has also been an invasive species removal geocaching event.

“I think in getting people to explore nature, those events like the cash and trash are fabulous – it’s so nice to see the community out and taking ownership of the green spaces and parks.”

The Leader 2014 Surrey Insider/Outsider Community Guide 11

by Kristyl Clark

With world-famous beaches and museums, top-notch dining destinations and historical hot spots rich with history, Surrey’s urban scene is like no other. Discover the city with these top six attractions.

1. Historic Stewart Farm House

Get ready to blast back to the past with a

visit to the the Historic Stewart Farm House at 13723 Crescent Rd.

This charming restored Victorian farmhouse, built in 1984 by Surrey pioneer John Stewart, features a variety of events and activities for all ages led by costumed tour guides, including: heritage activities, crafts, woodstove baking and much more.

2. Bear Creek Park Train & Mini Golf

In addition to the scenic nature trails, an outdoor pool, a splash park and a track, Bear Creek Park is home to Eddie the Engine – an attraction for guests from all over the world. This little train, brought over from England, is a hit with all ages.

After your rail adventure ends, pop on over to the 18-hole mini golf course.

3. Urban Safari Rescue Society

Have you ever wanted to see the world’s largest and friendliest species of scorpion? How about feel like what shed snake skin is like? The Urban Safari Rescue Society, located at 1395 176 St., gives you the chance to get up close and personal with over 300 rescued exotic animals, covering more than 110 species. All money raised goes toward the care of the animals.

4. Honey Bee CentreThis Surrey gem,

located at 7480 176 St., may just be the sweetest spot in town. The primary goal at Honeybee Centre is to bring the amazing world of the honeybee to the general public. This includes interactive displays, tours of the facility. There’s also honey tasting over at the Country Store.

5. The Clova Theatre While the curtain will

soon close forever at the Clova Theatre, there’s

still time to enjoy this local landmark.

This retro gem on Mains Street Cloverdale opened in 1947, and, apart from a decade-plus where the silver screen was silent until a reboot as the Clova Cinema in 1992, has been thrilling movie fans for decades.

6. Crescent BeachSurrey’s famous

Crescent Beach, located at 12160 Beecher St., is the perfect place for sun, sand and frolic. This popular summer destination for families dates all the way back to 1912 – the same year that saw the development of Crescent Hotel and the pier. While the hotel is long-gone, the beach is still bustling with locals and tourist year-round. Beach volley ball is located at the end of Sullivan Street –this area is ideal for picnics.
