Welcome to this publication which will help make the most of your fishing journey through Northwestern British Columbia. Once again we’re pleased to show you some of the catches of the last while as provided by residents of the northwest and other places.

Northwestern B.C. is truly a fishing paradise, regardless of what your preferred method or target catch and you’ll notice that in the pic-tures contained here in. For those who like the serenity of trout fishing, there are plenty of easily accessible lakes in the region to try your luck at. For those who enjoy the thrill and the fight associated with going after the big one, the region’s rivers provide ample opportunities to go after a variety of Pacific salmon.

And for those who want to hit the open waters of the Pacific in search of salmon, halibut, lingcod,

prawns or crabs, Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert and Kitimat all offer some exciting ocean fishing opportunities and plenty of professional guides to help ensure your trip to the coast is a success.

Along with the exceptional fishing opportunities is exceptional scenery. With bald eagles, grizzly bears, deer, gray whales, and the rare Kermode bear among the wildlife that calls the Northwest home, the opportunities to take in a unique wilderness experience is always present.

With thanksThe Terrace Standard thanks those who pro-vided them and we hope you’ll share the thrill of the catch as much as did those who caught the fish in the first place.

Off the trackAs the summer approaches, it’s important to remind people of the danger of crossing, or walking on, the train tracks to get to a desired fishing spot on the Skeena River. It seems like the message is catching on.

Local CN enforcement officer Kelly Yendrys said that he’s issued tickets to fewer people than when he ar-rived here in 2006.

“CN is pleased to see that education and enforcement on the dangers of trespassing has resulted in a signifi-cant decrease in the number of fishermen trespassing on our right of way,” said CN public affairs official Kelli Svendsen in looking at statistics gathered the past several years.

“As summer is approaching, we would like to remind the community that when people trespass on railway property, they take risks that can result in serious injuries and fatalities. CN will continue our enforce-ment efforts as a matter of public safety.” Yendrys patrols the area from Endako to Prince Rupert.

When you’re barbecuing Salmon, marinade the salmon to keep the fish from drying out as it cooks.

INGREDIENTS – Serves 63 (12 inch) untreated cedar planks1/3 cup vegetable oil1 1/2 tablespoons rice vinegar1 teaspoon sesame oil1/3 cup soy sauce1/4 cup chopped green onions1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger root1 teaspoon minced garlic2 (2 pound) salmon fillets, skin removed

METHOD1. Soak the cedar planks for at least 1 hour in warm

water. Soak longer if you have time.

2. In a shallow dish, stir together the vegetable oil, rice vinegar, sesame oil, soy sauce, green onions, ginger, and garlic. Place the salmon fillets in the marinade and turn to coat. Cover and marinate for at least 15 minutes, or up to one hour.

3. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat. Place the planks on the grate. The boards are ready when they start to smoke and crackle just a little.

4. Place the salmon fillets onto the planks and discard the marinade. Cover, and grill for about 20 minutes. Fish is done when you can flake it with a fork. It will continue to cook after you remove it from the grill.

It’s no secret the Kitimat River offers some of the best fishing in the province. It’s also no secret we owe that to our hatchery. That’s particularly true when it comes to steelhead.

Three years ago the provincial government introduced a ban on retaining wild steelhead. However, you can catch and keep a hatchery fish - and the Kitimat is the only river in the Northwest that offers hatchery steelhead.

The Kitimat River Fish Hatchery was first start-ed in 1977 as a pilot project, located across from the Eurocan Pulp and Paper mill. It came into being to rebuild salmon stocks, particularly chinook, which had been hard hit by overfish-ing, habitat degradation and a couple of floods that had ravaged spawning beds.

At that time it consisted of an Atco trailer containing a few troughs and only released 50,000-150,000 fish a year. Six years later a new, $10 million facility was built and now the annual release is in the millions.

At the hatchery five different species of salmonids are raised: chum, chinook, coho, cutthroat, and steelhead. Steelhead and cut-

throat are actually trout, but they are sea-run trout, which means that they have the same life cycle as a salmon by going out to the ocean to mature and returning to the rivers to spawn. Each year adult fish of each species are caught by angling, tangle netting or seine netting to obtain eggs and sperm.

Once the raised fish are ready for release - the time varies from species to species - they are taken back to the streams from which their parents were taken except for a small percentage released through a pipe directly below the hatchery.

From there, they swim out to the ocean to ma-ture, eventually to return to the Kitimat system to start the cycle all over again.

Incidentally, while they may not be the most prized fish, the hatchery is top heavy on the production of chum salmon. That’s because they were historically the most numerous spe-cies in the Kitimat.

Call 250-639-9888 to see if the hatchery is offering tours again this year. You’ll find it a fascinating experience.

On April 1, 2012, a number of angling regulation changes were implemented in the Skeena Region to address issues of overcrowding and conflict among users during the steelhead fishery. Changes were developed in consultation with resident anglers, guides, tourism and business representatives, non-Canadian anglers and First Nations (for more informa-tion, see www.env.gov.bc.ca/skeena/qws/). They apply to the Bulkley, Babine, Morice, kispiox, Suskwa, kitseguecla, Kitwanga, Skeena (section 4), Zymoetz Class I section, Zymoetz Class II section, Lakelse and Kitsumkalum rivers. Depending on the river, the new regulations include:

Extensions to the time period when a Classified Waters • Licence and Steelhead Conservation Surcharge Stamp are required

Changes from Class II to Class I designation•

New times and zones where only Canadians are permitted • to angle and non-Canadians are restricted

New measures for the management of angling guides•

For an explanation of all changes, visit www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations/ to read the Skeena Steelhead Regula-tions Brochure and Question and Answers that have been prepared.

The ministry will be monitoring these new regulations to ensure they are working as intended. Information on angler effort and satisfaction will be gathered and used to inform management decisions in the future.
