THE BOARDING HOUSEOpened in 2012 by Proprietor and Master Sommelier Alpana Singh, The Boarding House is located in the heart of Chicago’s River North neighborhood in a historic, multi-level building dating back to 1872. The restaurant includes an intimate, subterranean Cellar, a bustling first floor bar, and a dining room showcasing with floor to ceiling windows, exposed brick and natural wood accents.

He applies a ‘less is more’ philosophy adding interesting and elegant elements along the way. Spread across five floors spanning 13,000 square feet, The Boarding House features five distinct areas for private and semi-private dining for business dinners, social luncheons and celebration receptions. Our team and facilities are at your service to ensure your event is successful and memorable. All rooms are wheelchair and elevator accessible except for the Mezzanine.

The Wine Cellar is located in The Boarding House’s chic subterranean lounge space. The room features amber resin flooring, dramatic arched ceilings meant to evoke a wine cave and luxurious tufted leather banquettes. With it’s full bar and ample reception and dining areas, the space is incredibly versatile. The Wine Cellar is literally also the wine cellar for the entire Boarding House property so your guests will be able to view our 500+ selections in the cellar itself—the centerpiece of the room. The Wine Cellar is partially accessible for wheelchairs.

Beneath our spectacular lighting installation of over 4,600 Riesling bottles, the Main Dining Room of The Boarding House is one of the most stunning and urbane dining rooms in Chicago. 25-foot ceilings and soaring arched windows provide an elegant backdrop for twinkling city views, graphic silk wallpaper and grey suede banquets. Enjoy the space as-is or work with one of our experts to tailor the décor to suit the specific needs of your event. The main level of the dining room is completely wheelchair accessible and offers 3 private bathrooms.

The Ward Room is located on the second floor of The Boarding House and is a dedicated private dining room with a private restroom. Named for the family of one of our owners, John Ward, the room is bathed in sunlight by day and features views of Chicago’s River North by night. The decor is a beautiful mix of golden patina, natural wood, and exposed natural brick. The neutral color palette serves as the perfect backdrop for all colors of flowers, table linens and other décor, while the golden champagne hues make the space quite celebratory on its own. The room is fully wheelchair accessible.

The Mezzanine floats above the Main Dining Room and is eye level with the light installation. Sweeping views and a hushed ambiance are the luxury of this space, which is semi-private and benefits from the humming energy below. Amber lighting, windows facing Superior Street and library style shelving for our extensive glassware collection complete the space. The Mezzanine is only accessible by stairs so is not wheelchair accessible. Bathrooms are located one flight down.

THE CHANDELIER BAR
Toast your incoming guests with a celebratory welcome cocktail in our shimmering main bar. Enjoy sophisticated libations beneath our famed chandelier composed of nearly 10,000 wine glasses. The Chandelier Bar is an ideal entry for a property wide buy-out, but can also be partially booked for energetic happy-hour events, casual business gatherings, bachelor/bachelorette parties and celebrations of various sizes. Velvet wallpaper, dramatic lighting and cosmopolitan hues of gun-metal grey offer a muted flair to compliment every occasion. The Chandelier Bar is fully wheelchair accessible though all seating is bar-height.

TASTINGSThe Boarding House offers complimentary tastings for weddings and property wide buyouts after a contract is signed. For smaller events, we invite you to come in with a reservation in The Dining Room or Chandelier Bar to sample what we offer, though the full scope of party offerings are not available on the Dining Room menu. Tastings are limited to 2 guests during week day (Monday through Thursday) services. DÉCOR & AMENITIES The Boarding House would be pleased to provide a choice of décor for your special occasion. For additional fees, we will coordinate details for florals, lighting, props, themed linens, specialty equipment. Furthermore we provide professional calligraphers, photographers, musicians, disc jockeys and entertainers. A member of our Special Events team will provide a quote on any décor needs.
PARKING Valet Parking is available at the front door of The Boarding House at current rates. You may elect to bill the valet parking expense to your master bill so your guests do not incur an out-of-pocket expense.
COAT CHECK The Boarding House provides coat check for all events.
LIABILITYThe Boarding House assumes no responsibility for personal property and equipment brought into the restaurant.
GRATUITY & TAXES A gratuity of 20% (of food and beverage expenditure) will be assessed to your special event. Applicable state and local taxes of 11.25% will also be added. Tax-exempt organizations must provide an official letter to document their status in advance of the event.
MISCELLANEOUS FEESWe request that guests obtain management approval before bringing in any outside food or beverage. There is a corkage fee of $50.00 per bottles for all wines brought into the restaurant. There is a $5.00 per person cake cutting fee for cakes brought into the restaurant. With 72 hours notice, our pastry department can execute specialty cake orders and requests.
ALLERGIES AND DIETARY RESTRICTIONSThe Boarding House will accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions within reason but can not guarantee an allergen-free environment. Within our facility we process nuts, shellfish, gluten, allium and dairy products. Kosher meals or other outsourced meals must be ordered 72 hours in advance of your event.

GUARANTEE A final confirmation of the number of guests is required by 12 pm, three business days prior to the function. The number given at this time will become the minimum guarantee. In the event that fewer guests are served on the day of your function, you will be charged based on this guaranteed number. In the event that more guests are served, the actual number of guests served will determine the amount you are charged. Staffing and food orders are predicated on the final confirmation, the Boarding House cannot guarantee and service for dramatic increases in count after confirmation.
CANCELLATIONSDeposits are fully refundable up to 30 days prior to the function. Cancellations within 30 days, may apply to the deposit to a future events to be scheduled within 6 months. Within 7 days of the event, the deposit will be forfeited.
ROOM MINIMUM The Boarding House does not automatically assess a room fee. Instead, we have established a minimum of food and beverage dollars that must be spent. Should these minimums not be met, the food and beverage minimum will be added to your final bill. Taxes and gratuities do not count towards the food and beverage minimum. Food and
beverage minimums cannot be reached by gift certificates, carryout food or bottles of wine and only pertain to food and beverage consumed during the time of the event.
OVERTIME FEESEvents scheduled four hours or less may extend by one hour for a one time $500 overtime fee. (All other services would apply). Extension of events will be at the sole discretion of The Boarding House management. Overtime is subject to termination at any time, at the discretion of The Boarding House management.
DEPOSITSIn order for a contract to be binding, a deposit is required prior to the contract signing. Deposits may be submitted in person or by filling out the credit card authorization form and returning it via email. The deposit amount is 25% of the stated food and beverage minimum for the specified room. Rooms will not be held or confirmed until a deposit is received. In the meantime, all inquiries are considered speculative. Credit card deposits can be received in person, email or postal mail. Deposits cannot be taken over telephone as a signature is required.
FINAL PAYMENT Final payment is dues at the conclusion of the event. Cash or major credit cards are accepted.
