Education System in Germany

Because of the independence in matters of education and culture in Germany, each federal state regulates its own education system independently.

• School promotion of disabled children and youths is first of all a duty for the public school, if the children and youths can follow the educational program in consideration of the local conditions. This means similar goals for all pupils in a class.

• Disabled children and youths, that don’t get an optimal education in a public school, have to get taught in special schools. They get there a special educational assistance depending on their type of disability.

• In the session 2007/ 2008 there were about 580 special schools with about 54.000 pupils. This are about 5% of all pupils in Baden-Württemberg

• The “education plan for the schools for the mentally disabled”, renewed in 2009, is the general basis for the educational mission:

“To promote young people in the developement and strengthening of their whole person“

• structure of the schools for the mentally disabled:

- elementary level (4 years - like the general elementary school)- secondary level (5 years - like the general secondary school) - vocational level (3 years)

- 127 pupils in 20 classes

- about 50 teachers

- about 10 assistants

• The catchment area is the whole district of calw a long access route for the pupils with about 20 bus route

• 29 pupils in 6 classes

• 3 classes in Bad Teinach-Zavelstein

• 2 integrative external classes (Zavelstein, Neubulach)

• 1 inclusive external class (Gechingen)

• 58 pupils in 8 classes

• 7 classes in Bad Teinach-Zavelstein
