INTRODUCTION
Village life is the happiest compromise between the natural
and the artificial. It is a merry game between man and
nature. Hence, village life is the most natural life for the
human beings. We know that village people have few wants
in life. They are content with what is endowed by nature
around them. So, they do not like to make any progress.
Consequently, the village life has gone rusty. Evils of
ignorance and blind faiths have crept in. Un-education and
epidemics are rampant. Mass education and public health are
the primary conditions for the improvement of the village
life.
Same is the case with SAMBHUVANIPALEM – A
VILLAGE FAR AWAY FROM THE CITY’S POLLUTION
– AN ABODE OF PEACE AND SELFLESS PEOPLE. No
one knows when and how this place came into life. But it is
believed to be bearing life from the last 60-70 years. With
217 people as a family, the village extends itself partly into
the forest. As a result, the village is deprived of its needs and
communication with the outer world, hence requiring the
services of N.S.S. We, the team of NSS, therefore laid a plan
as to how and what help the villagers need giving them a ray
of hope as to consider themselves, a part of the society which
they were far away from.
In a movement that is surely believed to trigger a sense of
social awareness among the people and lighten those hopes
of the villagers, N.S.S has commenced the seven day special
camp program at this Sambhuvanipalem village on 03-02-
2014. A total of 47 volunteers were deeply indulged in
attempts to making themselves available at the service of the
villagers from 03-02-2014 to 09-02-2014.

DAY 1 : 03 – 02 – 2014
The kick-off of the program took place with an inaugural
function held at the village community hall. The chief guests for
the function were
Ex-Panchayat member - Mr.Yellarao and
Dean of U.G academics GVPCOE (A) - Dr. Ramana Murthy.
The guests of honor were Primary School
Head Mistress - Mrs. Anuradha,
School teacher - Mrs. Padmaja and
N.S.S Program Officer Dr. C.V. Nageswara Rao.
They were felicitated with presents by the volunteers. Villagers,
N.S.S volunteers and Primary School students actively
participated in this initiation. The program began with a
welcome speech by the N.S.S Program Officer who obliged the
chief guests and the villagers for accepting the team render their
service to this village. He said the activities planned will surely
be promising and that the entire team is looking forward to the
villagers’ cooperation.
This was followed by a talk by the Ex- Panchayat member who
expressed his gratitude for having chosen their village. Later,
Dr. Ramana Murthy who has always been an element of
confidence, encouragement and strength for the N.S.S team
apprehended the cause congratulating all the volunteers for
having the program successfully flagged on. He motivated the
volunteers to take up more of such special camps at the same
time warning them from crossing their academic boundaries.
The entire scenario about the execution of the planned activities
turned upside down only after a colloquy by the School Head
Mistress Smt. Anuradha threw light over the problems dawning
upon the school children. The problems included the increase in
dropouts from school, means of transportation to the cities,
health and hygiene and last but not least the drinking habit by
the villagers.
This helped the volunteers realize the need to re-plan their
activities and connect strongly with the prevailing conditions of
the village. Smt. Padmaja also added few ideas making the pool
complete. The inaugural session closed with a vote of thanks by
the N.S.S Program Officer.

Soon after this all the volunteers paced up, for
they had to reschedule the entire plan of activities.
Though ambiguous about the prioritization of
activities, all volunteers along with their chief sat
down for long hours and finally came up with a
new plan of what is to be done in the forthcoming
days. The events planned were plantation,
surveying, awareness about health and hygiene,
interaction with school children, awareness on
drinking and organizing a medical camp.

DAY 2: 04-02-2014
On the second day of the camp, the activity
undertaken was plantation. The place around the
school was shabby with haphazardly grown bushes
and thorns everywhere disturbing the entire
ambience of the study atmosphere. The aim was to
clean up all this giving the land a new shape and a
new purpose. Tools and other necessary equipment
were gathered from the college as well as the
villagers who extended their hands in helping us
serve the purpose. The process of cleaning up the
land took too long as the shrubs had to be cut down
and the entire land watered for easy removal of dead
grass and rejuvenation of the soil. In the meantime,
few of the volunteers managed to find their way to a
nursery and select the plants whose growth suited to
the conditions of the village. They finally succeeded
in bringing a handful of 100 plants to the school. As
the water percolated through the soil it was easier to
remove the sand and grass. The day finally came to
an end with the purpose served.

Survey
An early bird catches the worm and hence a few
volunteers gathered a couple of hours prior to the
scheduled time for conducting a survey in the village
on the basis of their livelihood, age, gender, personal
identity proofs, health issues, education, hygiene,
income, safety, medicines, government schemes and
vaccination. The volunteers in groups of 4 continued
the same for 3 hours and paused as the villagers had to
leave for work.
After taking a short break, it was time to finish the
uncompleted task of planting. Markings were made on
the land and holes were dug, each at a distance of 2
meters. The Principal and Teacher of the school were
invited to initiate the event who were joined by the
children in a blink. Both of them felt overwhelming
and the teacher added that the change was like a
dream coming true to them. She thanked and
appreciated the efforts of entire team. Later, about 30
saplings were planted outside of the school and the
rest were planted across distributed areas of the entire
village.

DAY 4: 06-02-2014
BLOOD CAMP
One of the most important key components of blood is
haemoglobin. Haemoglobin deficiency can be caused either
by decreased amount of haemoglobin molecules or by
decreased ability of each molecule to bind oxygen at the
same partial pressure of oxygen. In any case, haemoglobin
deficiency decreases blood oxygen-carrying capacity. Other
common causes of low haemoglobin include loss of blood,
nutritional deficiency, bone marrow problems,
chemotherapy, kidney failure, or abnormal haemoglobin
(such as that of sickle-cell disease). High haemoglobin
levels may be caused by exposure to high altitudes,
smoking, dehydration, or tumours.
The villagers were made aware of the crucial points relating
to blood, haemoglobin with the help of posters and the need
to maintain good and healthy eating habits, after which their
blood samples were taken and tested for haemoglobin
levels. The villagers were educated of ANEAMIA and its preventive measures. The blood samples were taken to GAYATRI HOSPITAL for further tests and the reports were brought back on the following day. A special bus was arranged for the people who had to meet up the doctors for further treatment. The villagers were educated as to what type of food they are supposed to eat to be healthy. In the afternoon, an NGO known as the SAHAJEEVAN FOUNDATION has distributed steel plates and glasses to the school children so that they use them during their midday meals. The children and students were very grateful to the foundation.

DAY 5: 07-02-2012
On the fifth day of the camp Health and Water Surveys were carried out in the village after which the surveying team sat down and sorted out the data turning it into a statistical study report. Based on these reports activities to be emphasised on in the near future were decided. Later a few of the volunteers had a meet with Dr. J. Nageswara Rao, Mbps, D.Ph., and Faculty in community medicine at Gayathri Medical College, where issues regarding the improvement of sanitary conditions in the village were discussed. In the evening a list of medicines that were necessary to be made available for the Health camp being conducted on the following day was made and the medicines were obtained from Apollo and Care Hospitals, while a few of the volunteers stayed back at the village for creating awareness about drinking and its effects. This called off the day.

DAY 6: 08-02-2014 HEALTH CAMP
The sixth day witnessed two special medical camps simultaneously – one by a gynecologist and the other by a general physician. DR.AKHILESWARI, gynecologist inquired the women of their health issues. Almost 50 women attended the checkup. The women were not only checked up but were also given free medicines for their respective complaints. The doctor has also advised the women as to how to keep themselves healthy stating the importance of personal hygiene and what care they must take. Dr. Kishore, physician helped and provided free medicines for the general issues of the villagers like pains, burns, etc. He advised the villagers on the nutritional and hygiene necessities. In India rural children face challenges to achieve educational success, with over 50% of
students unable to complete schooling through High Schools.
Here when comes to Sambhuvanipalem, the main reason behind is the difficulty in commuting.
Here the parents complained that there is no High school in close proximity and sending
their wards to distant places is both unsafe and expensive. The problem seems more apparent for girls. Even the people of this village don’t have proper
awareness about all the Government Schemes though they are eligible.
