  • Dwn?nd)Te,It says in the Gospel accountJesus was taken up body andWhy would fesus need a body in heaven?

Jn the OId Testament, there was a great chasm between our bodies andIheaven. We were told that no one could see the face of God and live, let

alone live with God in heaven. ]esus came to bridge that gap through his bodyand blood.

    |esus' glorifled body is in heaven to show that we, too, will be glorifled likehim, showing that, as part of God's creation, our bodies are inherently goodand worthy of heavenly life. |esus' ascension will be followed by our ascensioninto heaven. Our bodies will become like Jesus'glorifled body. Our life with God will become Heaven won't containlike Jesus'Iife with God. We see in fesus our disembodied spiritualown future. Our lives and our loves will not be beings, butwill be full ofsnuffed out like a candle. Rather, we will carry glorified human bodiesthem in our spiritual and glorified self, leaving without the inadequaciesbehind pain, death, and human inadequacies. we suffer now.

Christianity is a flesh-and-blood religion. Wecan't bypass the physical to reach the spiritual.|esus ascended into heaven, body and soul. Wedo not reach higher spiritual truths by reiectingthe material world. Heavenwon't contain IIdisembodied spiritual beings, but will be full of g}ffiglorified human bodies without the inadequacies ffiffiwe suffer now. Saint Paul, in I Corinthians15;35-40, tries to explain this to the people of Corinth. He tells them that thesplendor of the heavenly body is of one kind and the splendor of the earthlybody is another.

Do I live as if I am Christ's presence on earth, awarethat I am his missionary?

If lesus were in my family, social, and professionalsituations, whatwould he do?

AU)ovdF@m,?opofrnrcw[God] asks us to be missionary disciples, men and women whoradiate the truth, beauty and life-changing power of the Gospel;men and women who are channels of God's grace, who enablehis mercy, kindness, and truth to become the building blocks of

    a house that stands firm.

Sent to be Missionarieshe beginning of the Book of Acts presentsa summary of the life of Christ and how he

called and taught the apostles in the Holy Spirit. After his resurrection, Christ kept the apostles inferusalem, where they prayed together withthe Virgin and awaited the coming of theHoly Spirit which would give them powerto witness to him beyond the city andinto the outlying countries and regions,

iust as the Gospel reading commands. This Spirit given to them by Christ

is a spirit of mission and witness. When |esus was finished speaking, when his revelation had finished,he was taken to heaven. And theapostles were left standing there, looking up after him.

That looking up can be interpretedas a longing for ]esus' presence thatwas no longer in human form. Thingshad radically changed. Jesus' mission hadflnished, and now theirs was beginning.Their situation is the same as ours. We aresent on a missionl

An essential element of being Christian isto understand that we are sent into the world tobuild Christ's kingdom. We are his missionaries, his representatives. He counts on us to go intothe world and bring his message to all his belovedchildren just as he did-with preaching, testimony, and love. Jesus doesn't send us to be comfortable, professionally successful, and wealthy. He sends us tobe missionariesl
